My name is Virgil F. Compain I reside in the United States.
I have been working on the Compain family tree for many years and I have abundant information regarding my ancestor that probably are yours too.
My ancestor were French. They come from the areas of Limoges, Orleans, Blois, Chartres & Poitou.

I am also interested in all info relating to this Family. So far we have established that our furthest ancestor was a drape merchant at the siege of Orleans, and was knighted subsequently by the King for gallantry against the English. This title was transferable to his lineage "utriusque sexus" meaning via women as well as men, a departure from the norm. (c.1439)
Do you have any info on your branch? The name is not very common and it is said that these different spellings are usually clerical errors or phonetic spellings. Compaing meant "companion" in old medieval French, as you surely know...
