Re: Homer Conard

I want to keep this thread alive so..

I know some of you who've responded but to those who I don't know.. Roy Conard was my Grandfather, William "Arthur" Conard my Great Grandfather, George W. Conard my Great Great Grandfather, and John Aaron my GGG Grandfather. And it is believed that John's father was James.

My grandfather Roy was the brother of Homer. And I've posted a picture of Homer in my family tree here on Ancestry. I would love to hear from someone in Homer's family. It seems the Conards in Haywood Co. have lost touch with Homers side of the family.

Has anyone noticed how many censuses of John Aaron Conard and George Conard have them listed as "Conrad" or "Coonrod" or "Coonrad". Maybe we should consider the possibility that the family name was actually "Conrad" instead of "Conard" and later changed. Or maybe it was just a mispelling. I'd like to find more on this.. maybe it's the link we're missing. Darlene said something about this.

Of course she does not live there now, but when you go up Conleys Creek you will may a slight turn left - few hundred yards you will see a sign on right Tara Hills very small bridge to cross- now there is a very steep paved drive going up to a house you cannot see frm road- back then it was cabin or small house up here. we never went up to where they lived.
It is a private drive then and now.
I see what you mean- in the book, it states Nancy's sisters died. As well we have been learning alot more of our own family history.

I live in Hickory NC. Went to Conleys Creek yesterday with my brother. How awesome I got to go in side the house I lived in when I was born and the house on the same property when my mom left with me. We sold the house in 1987, and the nice people who bought it let us look inside. Hard to believe the bedrooms were so small. So awesome I got a chance to do this!!!

My mother was born in 1936 lived on Conleys Creek. I asked her today about the Kerleys. Nancy Kerley delivered my mom and her siblings at birth. Nancy Kerley is on my mother's birth certificate. She never knew Nancy Kerley but knew her son William Kerley. I used to sit on my grandmothers porch and would see William Kerley walking down Conleys Creek to town and back up the creek. I know exactly where they lived. I also know who Will married.

First of all, you have to know that a large part of this book is fiction, the author says this at the end. I know the Conards lived in Little Cataloochee on Conard Land then moved to Jonathan Creek. After Nancy was released from prison she moved to Swain county with her son and daughter in law. She is buried in Bumgardner cemetery in Swain county, NC. Yes i was sad what a lot of family's had to endure during these hard times. I really feel that Nancy was "railroaded" and took the blame for someone else. I have some information from her file from the NC archives that shows me, myself who did it, but it was with held. Thanks for replying. Liz

My family and I lived on Conleys Creek. Do you know where the cabin was located she lived in and the place she was buried. I just finished reading the book. I know it was all about survival in those times. It is devastating about the hunger families faced and other issues. It was hard emotionally to finish the book.
Definitely Uncle Frank was part of the family. I am having a bit of a problem e-mailing photos but will send some out along with some to the Beems. Our line was John Smoots Conard and the photos are mainly from the batch he took to Colorado. This particular batch, I think, was from the Stiles (he married Paulina Stiles.) Give me an address. rconard@blarg.net

I don't have a message from him to pass on or know why it was important.
Yes. In particular, I am interested in verifying who his parents were. In 1880 Census, Thomas' father is listed as John Connard. Think he may have actually been Jesse Conard, who served in the Civil War under the alias of John Davis. Jesse Conard's application for pension puts him at the same address in Brooklyn that John Connard is at in the 1880 Census.
