Re: John Condit/Cunditt etc.

Thanks for writing so quickly. I do own a copy of the Condit book, and various supplements, and have read the Norman Condit essay. My great-grandfather was Fillmore Condit, so I am a descendant from Peter's son Philip.

I've been sleuthing for quite a few years, much of it on the Internet, and have followed a lot of leads in Southern England, and in Wales. The query I put up seems tempting, because a change in the spelling of the name could have been one of the difficulties that has hidden John's identity so long. By the way, if you write out Cuncliffe in longhand, you can see how some of those letters might get "transformed."

If you find anything about the Charles City John Cuncliffe I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks,
Sharon Olson

Re: John Condit/Cunditt etc.

I am in support of your goal but have difficulty with the direction you seem to want to take. There is an excellent discussion of the original "Condit" name on Beth Fay's site ( http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/f/a/y/Elizabeth-F... ) titled "MUSINGS ON CONDITS" by Norman I. Condit, M.D. As you may know, Norman has all the original records put together in publishing the original Condit genealogy in 1885 and has made the study of the Condit family a life long work. He has never indicated, and my studies have never indicated, any connection of John Cundict (the ancestor) to Virginia or a Jane Mountain.

I have researched a little in early England/Wales and before 1678 there are multiple John Cundict/Condit/Condict/Cunditt listed in the records and Norman even suggests John could have been from Ireland. Which might be our John is problematic at this point. I have found no record in England/Wales indicating the birth of a Peter Cundict or a marriage that may fit, but I am still looking.

I would really like to examine the posts by Marge and any documentation she may have on John and his return to England. I am not sure how Cuncliffe would transform to Cundict but it is worth investigating and following up the Charles City marriage record.

Let me know if there is any research I can help with, since I do live in Virginia it may be possible to check the original records for the Cunliffe family. I am quite interested in John's origin.

David Condit

www.condit-family.com

John Condit/Cunditt etc.

I'd really like to solve the ancestry of the John Condit of England or Wales who came to Newark in 1678 with his son Peter. I have seen 2 interesting posts by "Marge," one in 2000, which said, "John Condit...had lived in America, married here and returned to England. They had one son, I believe his name was Peter...after his wife died, he and his son came back to America into New York or New Jersey. The first time he came to America, he came in at the Tidewater section of Virginia..."

Another post by "Marge," in 1999, in the Cunliffe message boards, said "The name started de Cuncliffe in England. In England it changed to Cuncliffe and yes it started from the location where they lived. When they came to America it was changed to Cundiff. John went back to England along with a wife. His first wife died and he and his son returned to America using the name Cundit, Cunditt, Condit, Conditt..."

Has anyone noticed and/or followed up the interesting marriage noted in American Marriage Records Before 1699 of Jane Mountain and John Cunliffe in Charles City County, Virginia on August 7, 1660?

I was just wondering if this might be worth pursuing to nail down the elusive John Condit/Cunditt.

As a tenth generation Condict (of Morristown, NJ), my line to the Byrams (and thus the Aldens), is via Peter Condict(second grandson of John the ancestor), who married Annie Byram, Ebenezer who married Huldah (my connection), and Silas who married Abigail Byram--the three granddaughters of John /Priscilla Alden. I joined Mayflower in 2000;Lines are also supposed to be good for the John Alden Society too in their eight generations project.

Seek info on Ella J. Condit (1851-1904) of Newark NJ, m. 1876 Herbert Cottrell. Believe her parents were Robert Smith CONDIT (1813-1857) 2nd wife Gertrude CARMEN (1819-?) and grandparents were Aaron CONDIT (1788-1838) Lydia HARRISON (1792-1871). Does your book cover this family group? I have no sources for this data. A cousin's husband found undocumented family group sheets. Thanks.

I am very interested in obtaining the ancestry of Robert S. CONDIT of NJ past his father Aaron. Just give me a title and author, and I can go from there.

Conduit and Robinson Connection in Caroline County VA
The Virginia Genealogist [Box 5860, Falmouth VA 22403] has just published the second and last segment of an article entitled, “Benjamin Robinson of Caroline County VA, But Not The Clerk!” [Vol 48, No.2] Using early county land tax records, the first part of the article sorts out two different Benjamin Robinson families in this burnt county. The article is well documented and can be used to prove lineage for most lineage societies.

The second part, published in Vol. 48, No.2, follows the children and grandchildren to Kentucky and Missouri. Anyone having additional facts about this family is asked to please contact me at the address below. We are most interested in learning the whereabouts of a son Benjamin Robinson who married a Fanny and was in Kentucky, any connections between the many George Robinsons and this family, and the children of Mary Ann Elizabeth Robinson who first married Silas Conduit and second James Chapman in Caroline County.

Norman Peters
P.O.
I don't have any information on your Condits, but I do have something that you may wish to take a look at.
The Ohio Genealogical Society published a quarterly publication called: Ohio: The Crossroads of our Nation: Records of Pioneer Families. This is a very nice resource for anyone doing research in Ohio. There are a number of Condits that migrated to Ohio, I believe. In Licking Co, there is a Jersey Cemetary because so many people buried there were from New Jersey.
Robert L. Condit of Condit, Ohio - 1928 - Scientist going to Planet Venus

While on a research trip to Tipton Co. Indiana, I was reading a newspaper dated 13 Feb 1928 and an interesting headline "Date Nears for trip to Planet Venus".
Miami, Fla - In nearly the same time that it would take an average airplane to fly from his home in Condit, Ohio to Miami Beach, where he now is, Robert Lee Condit, of the Ohio city, expects to be shot from Miami Beach to the planet Venus, more than 25,000,000 miles away, late this month. Condit, 30 years old, is an electrical and chemical engineer. The Ohio city in which he makes his home was named for a forbear. In a shed at Miami Beach he is assembling his projectile, which already has cost $110,000 and on which he has worked for years. It is nearly ready for the trip, which he says will be made after Feb. 24.

It is a long article and tho I am not related, I have wondered for years if he got to the point of "blasting off".

Interested to know if anyone knows of this fellow.
Marysue in Long Beach, CA

After death of Jotham's mother Abigail in Aug. 1881, I think they may have decided to move nearer their daughter Mary Adeline Condit Howell who lived in Burrton, Harvey Cnty, KS.
