Hi Tamera,

I cannot get the article to scan. Will need to send snail mail. The article is a description of the wedding. Looks like a lot of the folks who attended were prominent in the town. It is a short and sweet article. Will be happy to send on to you.
Contact me at trikings@earthlink.net. You might get a message from spaminator but I will watch for your reply.
Jayne

That would be much appreciated. I am at a total loss here for relatives. My mom had me convinced that my Dad was a terrible man and I never questioned her. Now it appears there is much more to the story and I want to find relative for any info on who I really am.

Again, Thank you.

Tamera Congdon Pagett

Rev. Lafayette Congdon (1845-1927)

I am always looking for more information. THe following is from my blog at: http://congdonfamilies.blogspot.com/2009/03/rev-lafayette-co...

***********

LaFayette5 Congdon (Phineas4 - Thomas3 - John2 - Joseph1)

Father: Congdon, Phineas Spring
Mother: Thatcher, Julia Ette

I have not even scratched the surface on LaFayette so far. I have over a hundred source-citations for him that will take me awhile to fully vet. The short of it is described well in this obituary from the Batavia Daily (2/23/1927 p.1):

FORMER SEMINARY PRESIDENT IS DEAD AT THE AGE Of 81

The Rev. La Fayette Congdon, D.D., Ph. D., Suffered Uremic Poisoning

CLERGYMAN MANY YEARS.

Served Eleven Methodist Episcopal Pastorates Between 1867 and 1903.

The Rev. La Fayette Congdon, D.D., Ph.D., formerly president of Genesee Wesleyan Seminary at Lima, died at 7 o’clock last evening at the hoe of his daughter, Mrs. Charles B. Peck, No. 31 Ellicott avenue, with whom he had made his home for the past two years. He had been in failing health for several years and was confined to his bed for the past three weeks. Death was due to uremic poisoning.
Dr. Congdon was well known throughout Western New York and had served in 11 pastorates in the Genesee Conference of the Methodist Episcopal church. He retired from active life in 1914 and had resided in Batavia since that time.
Dr. Congdon was born at Ellington, Chautauqua county, on October 21, 1845, being the only child of the late Phineas T. and Julia Thatcher Congdon. He prepared for college at the East avenue, collegiate institute in Rochester and at the age of 14 years passed his entrance examinations for the University of Rochester. Because of his age he was not permitted to enter the university for two years, during which he taught district schools.

Served in the Civil War.
At the end of his sophomore year in the University of Rochester, Dr. Congdon enlisted in the Union army. He served through the last year of the Civil war, being sent for a few weeks to a clerkship at an Elmira prison camp where 2,000 Confederate prisoners were held. He was then transferred to Sheridan’s troopers, 21st New York cavalry.
At the close of the war Dr. Congdon went to Cincinnati, O., where he taught for a year in a public school. The next year he attended Genesee Wesleyan college, which later became Syracuse university and was moved to that city. He was graduated with the class of 1867 and received his Ph.D. degree. He later received an honorary D.D. degree from Syracuse university. He joined the Genesee conference immediately after his graduation and was called to his first pastorate at Pittsford.
On September 20, 1871, Dr. Congdon married Miss Frances Kingsley, daughter of the late Daniel Kingsley
of Pittsford. He went to the Pittsford church in the fall of 1867. In the following years he served at Walworth, Geneseo, Lima, Newark, Geneseo, Wolcott, Towanda, Pa., University avenue in Syracuse, Penn Yan, the First church of Bradford, Pa., and in Batavia. He came to Batavia in 1900 and was pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church here until 1903, when he was elected to the presidency of the Lima seminary. He held that position for 11 years and retired in 1914. He had done little active work since his retirement. Three times he was a delegate to the general conference, in 1900, 1904 and 1908. he was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa honor society, the Grand Army of the Republic and the Sons of the American Revolution.

Two sons in the Orient.
Besides his wife and his daughter, Mrs. Peck, Dr. Congdon leaves four sons, Fayette K. Congdon of Northampton, Mass., Dr. Randolph T. Congdon of Potsdam, Dr. Edgar D. Congdon of Bangkok, Siam, and Wray H. Congdon of Tientsin, China, and eight grandchildren, four in this country and four in the Orient.
Funeral services for Dr. Congdon will be held from No. 81 Ellicott avenue Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock with the Rev. J.H. Olmsted of Niagara Falls officiating, assisted by the Rev. E.P. Hubbell, D.D., of Rochester and the Rev. Ernest W. Collings of Batavia. The bearers will be men who were closely associated with Dr. Congdon at Lima seminary. The body will be placed in the Elmwood cemetery vault and burial will be made later at Pittsford. Flowers are gratefully declined.

Individual Facts:

Name: Congdon, LaFayette [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9]
Title: Rev.
Sex: Male
Birth: 21 Oct 1845 in Ellington, Chautauqua, New York, USA [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11]
Census: 1850 in Marion, Wayne, New York, USA [4]
Occupation: 1859 in Rochester, Monroe, New York, USA; taught in district schools [10]
Education: 1860 in Rochester, Monroe, New York, USA; Univ. of Rochester (interupted, civil war) [10]
Census: 1860 in Springwater, Livingston, New York, USA [3]
Military Service: 31 Aug 1864; Entered Service (21st NY Cavalry, Sheridan's Command) [10]
Military Service: 31 May 1865; Mustered out
Occupation: 1866 in Cincinnati, Madison, Ohio, USA; Taught at the city schools for one year [10]
Graduation: 1867 in Genesee, New York, USA; Genesee Wesleyan College, A.B.(became Syracuse University) [10]
Census: 1870 in Pittsford, Monroe, New York, USA; first pastorship [1, 10]
Occupation: 1871 in Walworth, Wayne, New York, USA; Reverend [12, 13]
Census: 1880 in Newark, Wayne, New York, USA [5]
Graduation: 1883 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York, USA; Syracuse University, PHD
Graduation: 1885 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York, USA; Syracuse University, Honorary DD
Fact 1: 06 Dec 1886 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York, USA; Gave lecture on Rome and the Vatican at the Brown Memorial church [18]
Residence: Aug 1890 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York, USA; term of pastorshipending within a few weeks [19]
Census: 1900 in Hornellsville, Steuben, New York, USA [6]
Destination: 1900 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA; Member of the General Conference ME in Chicago
Occupation: Bet. 1902–1903 in Niagara, New York, USA; Presiding Elder of the Niagara District Methodist Episcopal Church
Destination: 1904 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, USA; Member of the General Conference ME in Los Angeles
Occupation: Bet. 1904–1914 in Lima, Livingston, New York, USA; President of Genesee Wesleyan Seminary [10, 14, 15, 16, 17]
Property: 12 Jul 1912 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York, USA; Transfered (sold?)
I realize your posts have been in answer to others questions, however, I would like to know if you have pictures of James Lyman Congdon and wife, Mary Ann Bodwell.
I lost track of James and wife after the 1880 census. Did they have other children besides Clara?

I am specifically interested in their dau., Clara b. 1867 who married Ira KIRK. Would you happen to have pictures of Clara and Ira?

Thanks for your help,

Revae

I've been reading the posts on this site. I, too, am interested in the Congdens.

Mary had following siblings:
1. James Lyman married Mary Ann BODWELL. He lived in Elkhart co. 1850s, 1860s, 1870s. In 1880 he was living in Riverside, Cook Co., IL.
2. George G. married Mary A. BICKEL. George died 17 Nov. 1927, Bristol, Elkhart, IN.
3. John L. b. ca 1848 IN. Lost him in IN after the 1870 census.
4. Loren A. b. Sept. 15, 1850 IN, d. 22 Aug. 1928 Elkhart Co., IN. He married a Myra J. b. 1860 OH
5. Ira F. b. 1853 IN mar. Sarah A. CRUNBAKER (sp). He died Jan. 10, 1936 Elkart Co.
6. Minerva b. ca 1863 IN mar. Datus A. WILBUR (this came from IN marriage records.) Never could find them in any census.

You may have all this data, but if not, hope this helps to fill in your genealogy. I also have names of children of Mary's siblings.

Revae

I am seeking information regarding Cora B. CONGDON born July 1867 IN, died aft. 1930. Parents of Cora were James Lyman CONGDON, son of James & Clarissa, and Mary Ann BODWELL, dau. of Zadack BODWELL.

Cora married Ira L. KIRK ca 1891, he born Nov. 5, 1855 OH, died Jun. 24, 1931 Bath, Summit, OH.

Now my reason for seeking more information. Ira's parents were George KIRK and Eliza SHESLER. George KIRK's parents were William KIRK and Maria (Mary) MILLER. This is my direct line.

I realize this is a rather convoluted message, but hope you can wend your way through it and you might just have some information for me.

Many thanks,

Revae

Hi Deb,
Just now found your posting. The dates on your Mary Irene Congdon match the dates that I have on my grandmother - b. 1/26/1840 d. 12/20/1910. I really hope that this is the same one. Does your info state where she died? My grandmother died in Pawnee County Kansas. In searching, I have also found an Ira Congdon on the 1880 Iuka, Pratt County, Kansas census. States that he was 27 years old, born in Indiana, with wife Sarah A. age 26, and children Minna, Maud, Julia and Grace. Pratt County is directly south of Pawnee County in Kansas. Suppose that this is the same one?
Sorry for my delay in replying. I have changed my email to rlblevins9255@att.net.
I'm really looking forward to hearing from you.

Lynette Blevins

Hi again, Deb!
A million thanks! I have been trying for 10 years to find out if this was my family. I thought that it was, but just couldn't find any proof. And yes, Mary Congdon did marry William T. Keller, my g-g-grandparents. I did try to find a Loren Congdon in the Kansas census - 1870-1910 - but didn't have any luck. I'll almost bet that the Ira Congdon is Mary's brother, with the counties being so close to each other. If I might ask, did you run into anything about the Keller family in the history book? Can't find anything about this family either. I take it that you live in Elkhart County.

Thanks again!
Lynette Blevins

Found one in the 1900 Ohio census. Info as follows: Minerva Wilbur, b. October, 1822, age 78, Cuyahoga County, Location, 37-WD, Cleveland. The age works out with your Minerva's birthdate.
Hello again,
I would love to have any and all info, including pictures, regarding the Congdon family. I have a bunch of old pictures, but have no idea who they might be. I do believe that they are related somehow to the Keller family. Perhaps some Congdons, don't know. My mother is 83 years old and is really enjoying finding out about her family history. I did some more census searching and found a Datus A. Wilbur, age 47, in the 1910 St. Joseph County, Sturgis, Michigan with wife Minerva b. Indiana, also age 47. Children Hazel and Grace. Then in the 1920 census, same location, I found a Datus A. Wilber, age 57, (last named spelled different) living with a Charles Walton and his wife, Bessie. Relationship to Charles Walton was listed as father-in-law. As always, hope that this helps someone, somehow. Please keep in touch.
Lynette Blevins

James Congdon's (John 2, Benjamin 1)will of January 9, 1794 gives his residence as the Town of Montville in the County of New London in the State of Connecticut. He refers to his wife Mary and lists the 10 children named below. The will was probated in 1797.
CAN ANYONE PROVIDE ANY INFORMATION ABOUT HIS CHILDREN? I'M PARTICULARILY INTERESTED IN WILLIAM AND HAVE SOME IDEAS BUT NO FACTS ABOUT HIM AND SOME OF HIS SIBLINGS.
1 Sarah (In father's will "loving daughters" Sarah and Fanny got the farm, house and all else minus 5 shillings for each of the others.)
2 Fanny October 19, 1819 Fanny "Quit Claims" her land in Montville to son Sanford Congdon saying it is the same land given to her by her father James Congdon.
3 William (Maybe the William who married Martha Chapel)
4 Jonathan; married Mary Sanford
5 Daniel; perhaps married Hannah Grene
6 James
7 Anna; (Actual will says Anne followed by Congdon which has then been crossed out which could mean she had married by then.)
8 Mary;
9 Amy
10 Rebecca
Any help most appreciated. One son, Samuel(b 1824) enlisted 1842 and was eventually posted to Dunbar Scotland. He had 15 children: Eleanor,Elizabeth,Harriet, Sara, Samuel,Fredrick, Alice, Robert, Henry, Isabella, Agnes, Charles, Emma, Daniel&Frank.
I am from the Henry line. He was killed in action in France in 1918. One of his daughters (my grandmother)was born in St Lucia West Indies 1900 when he was stationed out there. Any connections anyone?

Any help would be appreciated......

Hi again,

No, I don't live in Elkhart. I do live only about an hour away. It is a nice side trip place to spend a day looking
around. Bristol is near-by also.

I also found a listing from the health departments records
re marriages and births. As follows;

J.R. Congdon to Carrie E.Curtis 10/02/1866 (Bk2,pg18)
Bessie L. to Byron B. Ganger 05/31/1917 (Bk26-448)
Carrie to Harry Coe 02/10/1883 (6-202)
Cora E. to O.F. Hubbell 03/03/1886 (7-38)
Ira to Sarah Crunbaker 08/13/1874 (4-215)
Mary J. to William Keller 12/14/1865 (2-402)
Minerva H. to Datus A Wilbur 09/01/1881 (5-569)

some of it is iffy re sp. problems with handwriting but I
wrote the page listings also if needed.

Did not find any specific Keller references except for the
earlier one and above. Doesn't mean I won't find something
the next time I go searching.
P.S.
Sarah and Ira came back to Elkhart. They are in the
local cemetery listings.
Plus
I have in my collection a picture of "Uncle Ira and Sarah
Congdon" and "Bessie, Hazel and Grace Wilber-children of
Date and Minerva Wilber."

I'll keep trying,
Deb H.

I went to the Elkhart County Library today and found an interesting book on the History of Elkhart County. p.1160
reads:
James L. Congdon, a retired farmeer, was born in Vermont
Aug 9, 1816 and was brought up on a farm in Mew York State.
He came to Indiana and located on the Wabash, where he farmed for a few years; then retuning to New York he took a wife in 1839, whose maiden name was Clarissa Mather. She was born in 1818 and died Aug 6, 1876. They moved back to Indiana and located in Elkhart county, and there began farming, which occupation he followed up to late years, when he retired from labor. Their family consists of 2 girls and 5 boys, all living: Mary I., now Mrs. Wm T. Keller; James L,. George G., John L., Loran A., Ira F. and Minerva. He owns 200 acres of land, worth $10,000, besides his property in Bristol. Mr. and Mrs. C. are members of the Episcopal Church at Bristol and Mr. C. is a Republican.

I believe your Mary Irene's heritage is with the family that
started the Congdon Drug Company in Bristol,Elkhart,IN.

No, I did not find anything on her death. But, I did find
where her brother Loren Amerett Congdon (our branch) had returned in the early 1880's from Kansas, where he had been a school teacher and decided instead to found the Congdon
Drug Company. Maybe that was part of the Kansas connection
they were the family he went to be with???????

Will let you know if I find anymore,
Deb H.
