Thanks for the information!

I do have Mary Kerr down as a second wife to John Allen Conger, but didn't have a marriage date for that.

I should have been able to find this myself, I guess, since everything you put down is just a matter of looking up the surname, and I'm not that much of a newbie at this. Thanks for taking the time to send it to me!

I'm tryhing to track down information on Gladys Cynthia Conger, b.1897, Dau of John Allen Conger and Graced Hostetter. John Allen was b. 1873 and was the s/o Theron Seymour, b.1847.

I want to know if she had any other siblings and where the family came from. She was my grandmother, and married Claude H. Godman. Family stories say she remembered coming to Missouri in a wagon, possibly covered. She ended up in Kansas City.

Any information about her relatives and siblings would be appreciated.

I am searching for info on Mahala Cooper who was born in New York, possibly Wayne county area, about 1817. She married William Conger also of that area and had two children, Allen and Elsie. Elsie married Edward Robinson. They moved to La Salle County Illinois in 1847 where William died. Mahala later married Henry Ward. Among their children were Emma, Thomas and Frank Ward. Census records found several Conger families in Cato New York along with an Abraham Cooper family and an Abel Cooper in Brookfield Madison New York. Mahala lived in Brookfield after William died. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm all mixed up about the children of these 2 wives. Can you help? Parents of Elias D. were David and Mary Darby Conger; Parents of David were Jonathan and Ann Enyard Conger; Parents of Jonathan were John and Mary Tuttle Conger. Here's another gap: Children of John and Mary Tuttle Conger. Also, info about John Conger's parents - John and Mary Kelly Conger. Thanks for any help you can give me. Do you have photos of any of the Congers?

Phoebe Conger? Seeley? Michigan? 1830s - 1900?

I'm looking for any and all info on a Phoebe (Phebe?) Conger, in Michigan in the 1800s. Here is what I know so far, which is not enough yet to satisfy me I've found who I'm looking for.

My ggggrandfather Judson I. Seeley married twice; the second was to a Phoebe Unknown. They were married some time after 1860 but before 1862, since their first son, Harrison G. Seeley, was born 4-7-1862 in Genesee County, MI. He died in October 1896 in Genesee County, MI. She survived at least to the 1900 Census and then I lose track of her.

I'm trying to confirm her maiden name. Her son Lewis Truman Seeley, b. 8-21-1868; d. 9-23-1945 in Los Angeles, states on his death cert that his mother's maiden name was Conger.

But I have not been able to find any Phoebe Conger born around the right time, late 1830s or early 1840s, anywhere. So I can't be satisfied yet that I've closed this loop.

However, there are a lot of coincidences:

1. A Harrison G. Conger married one of Judson Seeley's sisters, Deniza Ann Seeley.

2. Judson and Phoebe named their first son Harrison G. Seeley.

3. Harrison Conger's mother's name was Phoebe (but she's the wrong generation to be the one I'm looking for).

4. Harrison and Deniza Conger had a daughter they named Phoebe, but she was only 9 in the 1850 census, and Harrison and Deniza only married in Dec. 1839, so I doubt seriously this could be the Phoebe Conger I seek.

Any clues?

I can give a fairly complete genealogy of Almon Conger on his mother's side back to about 1800. His father was Lorenzo Dwight Conger, born in New York State. His mother was Julia Ellen Way, born in Connecticut. She was the daughter of Nancy Cornelia Tuller and John S. Way. Nancy Cornelia Tuller was the daughter of Julia Cadwell, second wife of Nelson Tuller. Gravestones of Nelson and Julia can be seen in the Middlebury CT cemetery. Nelson Tuller was my ggg grandfather.

Re: Clinton County Ohio Congers...Lydia, Daughter of Bradley and Sarah Kirk???

I think I'm more confused than ever!

I'm still not willing to pin Lydia to Bradley- I think he was just a great stepfater, so she used his name. I can't figure out why she would revert to "Kirk" if it wasn't her father's name, or her mother's name, only her step mother's maiden name. She only had one child, Nora, and Nora's death certificate said her mother was Lydia Kirk and her father was Noah Lake, and she always claimed to be born in Indiana. Yet her mother, Lydia, never seemed to have gone by Lake, only Kirk or Conger. And Nora never went by anything but Kirk until she was married.

I've looked to every published genealogy on the Conger name that I can find, and they all say the same kids you do for Bradley and Sarah. I've probably seen 10 of 'em. And not a one mentions Bradley being married twice. It is possible that Sarah was married twice- maybe her maiden name was St. John and she married a Kirk and then Bradley Conger.

It's neat that the Burden name does tie into the Congers, as it shows that Lydia Conger is indeed the same person as Lydia Kirk. The evidence seems pretty overwhelming, but there is definately doubt in my mind.

I'll explore a few other avenues I have in mind and get back with you... Thanks for the help!
Hello, Sorry I haven't responded sooner, I must have missed the email alert. I really believe that Lydia must have been illegitamate. Maybe Bradley posed as her father. Do you have a marriage date for Bradley and Sarah? Lydia was apparently born January 9, 1830. The plot thickens somewhat when we see that her daughter, Nora Kirk Surface, who also seems to have been illegitamate, has a daughter by the name of Georgia Ann who marries a Charles Conger. Do you have a Charles in your file? Is it possible that Bradley was married twice; first toa Sarah St. John and then to a Sarah Kirk? But that wouldn't be right, because why would Lydia use her step-mother's maiden name? It is also possible that the informant on the death certificate that lists mother as Sarah St. John was mistaken (It was her son-in-law) or just trying to cover. Her obituary only says "the eldest daughter of Bradley and Sarah Conger, was born near Wilmington, Clinton County, Ohio, January 9, 1830..." It does not mention siblings. It does mention pallbearers, none of whom ring bells with me,maybe you will recognize the names: Edward Hensel, George Brown, Clyde Mount, Horace Graham, Elmore Graham, and George Graham. I see your Morris and other children in the 1850 and 1860 census with Bradley and Sarah and Lydia, aswellas other children. Lydia was counted twice on the 1850, once in the home of Bradley/ Clinton County, andoncein the home of Jos. Kirk/Clinton County.I'm just plain Confused! Thanks for any details you can provide!

John Conger and bigamy!

I heard from an aunt of mine a tale about a John Conger in Missouri who was sent to prison on charges of bigamy. She said it made a big splash in the papers at the time, which she figured was in the early 1900s. She also figured it all happened in Kansas City, Missouri since that's where her family was. John Conger had a daugher, Gladys Conger, who married a Godman. John finally ran off and started another family once he got out of prison, without divorcing his first wife. He moved to Illinois and never told his second wife about the first. His second family had children named the same as his first!

I'm just beginning to get into this story and so far have found nothing about him on the internet, so if someone could help with this I'd appreciate it!

John E. Conger and Matilda Cass

Hi, I am seeking information about John E. CONGER, who was born about 1832-5. He married Matilda CASS in Hancock County IN, and they lived in Grant County Indiana in the 1860 census. I THINK John might be a son of Gershom Conger and Hannah PIATT. (There is a family of Gershom Conger from Vermont, I think that is a different line... John was a doctor of some sort, he is listed in the tax inventory lists of Grant County IN as a physician with taxable property in Indiana but living in Nevada. The family story is he was going to move his family out west, but died on the trail, before they even got out of Indiana and they had to turn around and come back, but who knows. He falls off the face of the earth between 1860-1870. His wife Matilda remarried Joseph Lakin and lived in Madison County IN subsequently. Another John Conger pops up in Iowa married to a different woman, but he has different parents seemingly is a different John, middle initial B......appreciate anything about him, Gershom and Hannah to sort out.

So as far as Lydia,Bradley must have been married before Sarah Kirk, even with the info I have birth about 1837, it is still before his marriage to Sarah.
The Conger,Price,Burden name's from Clinton/Warren Co's intertwine more than once.
Hi. I've been looking into other sources,I did come up
with this. Would this be Lydia? {Born-Jan-09-1830-d-Feb
06-1912-Clearcreek Twp-Warren Co,Oh.-Burial-Feb-08-1912
Springboro-Oh.Green-Co.81yr's-11mo's-3-day's.} I did find
her death cert.and you are exactly right on the info as
far as parent's listed on it.The more I think about it I
believe you are correct as far as Bradley being her step
father,I cannot find any other marriage for him other than
the one to Sarah Kirk. But again??.I did find this info for
Warren Co-1850-censes-{Ezekiel and Elmira Kirk with a
child by the name Lydia-13-yr's-b-1837 Oh.match's my info
for Bradley and Sarah {Lydia Ann} age is right but b-off
by two yr's.If I'm not mistaken,Sarah has a brother named
Ezekiel Kirk. So Lydia could be her niece and they took
her in for some reason and raised her as their own. As far
as the St.John name go's for Sarah she may have been mar.
before Bradley and Lydia is her daughter. There is mention
of Jesse Kirk coming to Clinton Oh,from Pa 1812 and some
of his children went to Indiana and one being a Sarah.but
Bradley's Sarah is listed born-12-20-1815-Pa.So I don't
think it would be her. {History of Clinton} Union Twp.I
will keep on looking also, after all I have a bit of Conger
blood in me to.
Linda,

My connection to the Conger family is very distant. One of my grandmother's great grandmothers had a sister named Hannah who married Uzziah Conger. She was a very interesting lady, born 1870 in IL, died when she was 89 in Des Moines, and trained as a dentist.

There was a family story about how she and possibly her husband were somehow part of the Boxer Rebellion in China, but I have never been able to sort that out, and I have lost all contact with her granddaughters so I am unable to verify it.

I'm happy to help with any lookups. You can email me directly at pam@lampinc.com.

Patricia Max

I am a decendent of David as well and the dates that you gave for him are the same as mine, but I have a Benjamin Conger and his father but am not sure if it is correct. I would love to have the correct information if they are one in the same.

I wondered if anyone knows Margaret's maiden name? William H. and Marget A. Conger are listed in the Harrison, Clay, Indiana 1880 census. I am trying to track down a sister of my gr. gr. grandfather, John T. Bradbury, and wondered if this might be his sister Margaret, b. about 1838, IN

Patricia, thank you so much for this information! It sure looks like a fit. Especially since my gr. gr. grandfather, John T. Bradbury, was also married in Grant Co. (in 1859). Unfortunately, they didn't record parents of the bride or groom like they do now. So have to be careful jumping to conclusions. There were a lot of Bradbury's in Indiana during the mid to late 1800's. But this looks like a piece of the puzzle!

Are you by any chance related?
Linda

I am looking for a William Conger, perhaps of Seneca County,N.Y. who died before June 1865. He was married to my 3d g aunt named Zerue or Jerusha ( a.k.a. "Ruby")Bates. Two known children were produced of this marriage: Persis Conger,b. about 1846-7, and Christopher,b. 1849. Jerusha Conger, his widow, is listed in the Homer,Cortland Co.,N.Y. census of June 1865 as being widowed with a prior marriage with 4 additional children, deceased as of June 1865. Any knowledge of this family would be appreciated. Ted Bates
