The Congleton yDNA project is specifically looking for direct male line descendants of William Congleton of Guernsey County, Ohio, to be tested. William raised his family in Guernsey County, but after his death, his remaining sons moved to Libertyville, Washington County, Ohio, where descendants of this family still live today. The oldest son, John Congleton, has no know male descendants alive today. William’s sons, James Congleton, David Congleton and William Congleton have descendants in the direct male line, still living in Washington County. It would be very helpful to this project if a member of this family joined the project.

The project has one member who is believed to descend from William Congleton of Beaufort County, North Carolina. We need a second member of this family to confirm the genetic pedigree of this line. We would also like to have a descendant of Moses Congleton of Brooke County, West Virginia, in the project. A descendant of the Congleton family of Salem and Sussex Counties in New Jersey, would also be a valuable addition to the project. Lastly there is the Congleton family of New York State and Michigan. Descendants of all these families are needed to determine if they all descend from one man, or if they are separate families.
This summer sale is a perfect opportunity to fill out the genetic pedigree chart for this family. The sale price is valid from 9 June to 24 June. The test kits must be paid for by 30 June 2009.

What I have is the recorded copy of William Congleton's will, so it will not provide any information on John Everton's actual signature.

I want to make sure you understand this William Congleton was NOT the brother of Moses Congleton. Moses's brother, William Congleton died in Jackson County, Indiana prior to April 1826. At that time a deed was recorded in settlement of his estate that names all of his children, in Jackson County. A transcription of this deed can be found on the Congleton message board, if you go back to the early years, probably before 2000.

Many Congleton researchers have confused these two men. Both men owned property in Guernsey County between 1815 and 1821, and they had the same name. The William of this will was married to Jane [Unknown] who like her husband was born in New Jersey. Jane died in Washington County, Ohio after 1850. Moses's brother, William, was married to a lady named Nancy. I do not know what happened to Nancy, but I believe she lived out her days in Jackson County, Indiana.

This William Congleton was the brother of Moses Congleton of Brooke County, West Virginia, the Revolutionary War soldier. In 1833, when Moses applied for his war pension, he was asked if there was a documentary record of his birth.

The implication of this statement is that Moses’s brother was deacesed by 1833, and that someone in William’s family had posession of the Bible.

Moses Congleton married Martha Grimes / Graham, the daughter of Thomas Graham of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, Who died about 1806. In his will, Thomas Graham left money to Thomas Graham Congleton, the son of Moses Congleton and to Thomas Graham Congleton, the son of William Congleton.

This William Congleton was married twice, and possibly three times. His first wife, may have been the daughter of a Basil Wells, by who he had the son, Basil Wells Congleton. His second wife was the daughter of Thomas Graham, her given name is unknown, and by her he had a son, Thomas Graham Congleton.

The mother of his remaining children are believed to Nancy, who he married about 1806 in Belmont County, Ohio. They were Susan Congleton McCormack, Eliza J. Congleton, Mary Congleton and Serena Congleton Murphy.

William Congleton purchased land in Brooke County, West Virginia beginning in 1797, then in Belmont County, Ohio and lastly in Guernsey County Ohio. About 1815, he moved with his family to Jackson County, Indiana. After moving to Indiana, he sold land in Guernsey County. That deed shows he was living in Jackson County, Indiana at the time of the sale.

William Congleton’s Will

I William Conkleton of the County of Guernsey and State of Ohio do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following viz that is to say.

First. It is my will that my funeral expenses and all my just debts be fully paid.

Second. I Give devise and bequeath to beloved wife Jane Conkleton in lieu of her dower all the live stock, Horses Cattle, Sheep Hogg and by me now owned and kept on the farm on which I now reside and also all the house hold furniture and other Items of property not particulary named and other wise disposed of in this will during her natural life and at the death of my said wife all the property hereby devised or bequeathed to her as aforesaid or so much there of as may then remain unexpended shall be at her my said wifes disposal to do with as she may see proper.

Third. I Give and devise to my eldest son David Congleton the one half of the farm on which I now reside situate in Madison Township Guernsey County and State of Ohio containing about one hundred and twenty five acres to be divided equal through the center of said tract and my son David as aforesaid is to have the North East side of said farm containing about Sixty two and one half acres, and to his heirs and assigns forever by him my said son David to be at the one half of all the necessary expense of keeping my beloved wife as aforesaid during her natural life. Such as is necessary for her to have for a comfortable living.

Fourth. I Give and bequeath to my second son James Conkleton five Dollars to be paid at or soon after my death by my son David and my third son William Conkleton Equally.

Forth. I Give and bequeath to my third son William Conkleton the one half of the farm I now live on described as aforesaid and after dividing as aforesaid he is to have the South West side of said farm east of my two sons. David & William is to be equal in all expenses dividing said farm. William’s half is to him and to his heirs and assigns forever as aforesaid & him William is to be at one half of keeping my said wife as aforesaid in my third bequest.

Fifth. I do Give and bequeath to my four grand children Martha & Eliza Conkleton & William & Leonidas Conkleton sons & daughters of my son John Conkleton who is now deceased in hand every one of them five dollars to be paid in two years after my decease and to be paid by my sons David & William each share alike.

And lastly, I do give give and bequeath to my two daughters, Elizabeth Day and and Margaret Walker One Dollar Each to be paid at any time after my death to be paid by my son David and William Conkleton.

Lastly of all I hereby constitute and appoint my two sons David & William Conkleton to be the executors of this my last will and testiment revoking and annulling all former wills by me made & rattify and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testiment. This William Congleton was married twice, both marriages taking place in New Jersey. His first wife was probably named Elizabeth, or Eliza, last names unknown. His second wife was Jane, last name unknown.

William and Elizabeth has one son, John Congleton, born in New Jersey in 1787. John died 19 January 1838 in Alleghany Township, Armstorng County, Pennsylvania. John and his wife Jane Derby had four children, Eliza, Martha, William and Leonidas.

William married secondly, Jane, about 1796. Their three oldest children, Elizabeth, James, and David were born in New Jersey in 1798 and 1802. Please note William’s will names David Congleton as the oldest son. The census records imply David and James were either twins, or James was older. If these brothers were twins, both were born in New Jersey before the family moved to Ohio. Their children, Margaret and William were born in Ohio, in 1806 and 1809, respectively. The census records show all of these children either born in New Jersey or Ohio. The census records of Margaret Congleton Walker for 1880 shows both her parents born in New Jersey. James Congleton and Elizabeth Congleton Day were listed as being born in New Jersey in 1850, as was his mother, Jane.

The 1880 census receords of John Congleton’s two daughters, Elizabeth Congleton Ulum and Martha Leonard show their father born in New Jersey.

There is possibly one other daughter, a Mary Congleton, who died before William’s will was written.

The land mentioned in the will was purchased by William Congleton on 13 September 1821 and 13 January 1831. The first deed is recorded in Guernsey County Deed Book D, page 149, and the second in Guernsey County Deed Book S, page 218. There is no evidence he ever owned any other land in Guernsey County.

This William Congleton died in Guernsey County, Ohio in March 1843.

The Congleton yDNA Project has been established at Family Tree DNA. In 1800, there were 5 families with the Congleton surname, in the United States, in 1850, there were 100 and in 1900 a 200. The goal of this project is to identify the genetic pedigrees of the various Congleton families, and hopefully to connect them to families in their countries of origin.

To participate in the project for yDNA testing, you MUST be a male with the CONGLETON surname, and there MUST be an unbroken line of male descent from your most distant known male Congleton ancestor. If your line of descent has been interrupted by an adoption or a female ancestor, you will not have the yDNA of your most distant documented CONGLETON ancestor.

CONGLETON yDNA Project

The Congleton yDNA Project has been established at Family Tree DNA.

In 1790, there were families with the Congleton surname living in Delaware, New Jersey, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. In the early years of the 19th century, descendants of these families moved into Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Ohio and West Virginia. It is the goal of this project to identify how many genetically different families they represent, establish the genetic pedigree of each family and to try to determine where these families originated in the Old World.

yDNA test subjects MUST be MEN with the CONGLETON surname, who were not adoped, nor whose male ancestors were not adopted into the Congleton family. Tests are available for 12, 25, 37 and 67 markers. I recommend being tested for at least 37 markers, and prefer project members to be tested for 67 markers. Before beginning my first project, I realized men who had been tested at 12 or 25 markers did not find the results to be definitive. They would then upgrade to 37 or 67 markers. Every time you upgrade, in addition to the lab fees, there is an administrative charge. In the long run, it is cheaper to do the 67 marker test and get all the information at once.

The test is easy to do, it requires taking several scrapings from the inside of the mouth, depositing the scrapers in the vials provided and mailing them to the laboratory. It usually takes about 8-12 weeks to receive the test results.

I'm seeking information on the descendents of John F. and Martha J. Congleton of Dover, Tuscarawus County, OH. John was born Feb. 1862 and Martha was born Dec. 1865. They were married about 1884 and had two children: John E. Congleton, July 1885, and Carrie M. Congleton, March 1888. Carrie married Frank L. English in 1909 and later married Fred Fey.

Actually the Congleton name in that region goes back further. The first Congletons that I have ran acrossed were a group of orphaned Congleton children in the Brandwine Hundred (New Castle County, Delaware)in the 1740's. A branch I suspect moved into Northhampton Co. PA and Moses Congleton (Revolutionary Drummer Boy)is from this ilke.
This DNA thing is interesting but what exactly is to be achieved?

In the 1900 census for Dallas, I found Julia’s DOB as May 1890 and Wilhelmina’s DOB as Jan 1892. Photo was taken in Dallas (Dallas Co.) TX in about 1895-1900, and they look to be about in the range of ages 7-10. In the 1930 census for Potter Co., TX, I found Julia, age 37, as the wife of Edwin N. Congleton, age 39.

Joseph Gorley was an ancestor of my Grandfather Charles Franklin Mills. I know that he was born in Louden Co. Virginia abt 1767; married Grace Morgan is 1792. He died in Louden Co. in 1817. Grace died in 1834. I am trying to find information on their respective parents and siblings.

Just found your posting from 2003 -- not even sure if this will reach you but... I'm a direct descendant of (your) Florence Congleton's sister -- Gertrude May. Gertrude was my great, great grand mom. I've just begun researching this side of the family; I've spent several years on my paternal and my husband's paternal lines (am back to pre-revolutionary war times). Time to start rounding out the family "bush" as I like to call it. Can I answer any questions for you? Care to share any info. regarding Florence and Gertrudes parents?

If so...when did he marry Emma? He and Ida died in 1934 and 1931did he and Ida divorce?
