I don't know if I am related to you or not. I am from the branch of Congos that are from Canada. We live in Alberta. I know of some of the congo branches that go back as far as europe, england and ireland. not sure if this helps. I have heard of some congos who went into the states from Canads if memory serves. I think I remember certain threads from Conneticut or somewhere like that. I don't know if this helps at all, that is what I found out from research though it has been so long ago that I honestly cannot remember where I got the information from. Feel free to respond if you so desire though. It is always interesting to find other Congos. My grandfather, George Congo, is the last of his brothers. They grew up in cental Alberta. His mother was Edna Congo. Hope this helps.

Hi there! I believe we are related! Your mother, Irene, I believe is my great Aunt. My father, James McCune was the son of Velma Congo, who I believe is your mother's sister. Is this correct? Even though I was quite young, I vividly remember a small organ in their house and a HD Indian (turquoise color, I believe) that was dearly loved! In fact, we lived in the house up the hill from the pharmacy that Aunt Irene owned!

Okay. I'm soooo confused!
I believe that I had a family tree going back to the 1700's until I read this thread. My father, James McCune, was the son of Velma Congo. According to the 1930 US Census, she is the daughter of Fred W (Winfield?) Congo and Sara E. On this Census report are also listed Harley, Robert, Irene, Dorathy, Freddie and Seab (who is 73?). I remember Aunt Irene. I believe she was my great Aunt. She lived in Salineville, Ohio. Also, my mother (Marge) remembers Harley, Fred and Freddie. I also remember a Linda Congo from Wellsville, who I believe is my father's cousin.
It's been said that we were Cherokee/Choctaw and that it comes from the Congo side of our family. I've also found information that lists Fred W. Congo as being "Negro" on the census reports, but in writing it says caucasion. I never knew about the Congrove's. But that's an interesting fact. I had the "Sara Clem" side listed in my family tree, but I'm beginning to think that is now the correct Winfield, because I remember Aunt Irene.
I'm so lost!
An easy way to get past this might be through my mother, even though this is my father's side of the family.
If anyone reading this remembers a Marge McCune from Salinevile with 10 kids, Tom, Margaret (Sissy), Charlie, Mike, Tina (all Oates) and Jamie, Velma, Jimmy, Myrtle and David (deceased - 18 months), please message me, this is my family.
Any information would be greatly appreciate!
Thanks,
Myrtle

My great grandfathers death certificate was filled out by my grandfater and his name is shown ans Scott Congo. We thought it was Scott Winfield Congo, it could have been Winfield Scott. His wife's maident name was Jennie Smith. They were from Meigs County, Olive Township. Scott's birthplace was Bellsville, WV, and he is burried off of Route 39 out of Wellsville, Ohio in the Oakridge Presbyterian Church Cemetery. He died 11/5/1933 or 35? he was born 5/15/1850.

Send e-mail to Dent@core.com

Hi Kenneth,

May name is Linda Dent, and my mother was Irene Congo, father Fred Winfield Congo, Mother Sarah Ellizabeth Shepherd/Sheppard of Wellsville, Ohio.

Fred W. was from Meigs County, Olive Twnshp, OH. He lived in Longbottom and Reedsville. He married a Jenny Adams, father, Perry Adams and had two children. When they were 2 and 3, Jenny died. After WWI, he married my grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Shepherd/Sheppard.

We've also had alot of confusion of the Congo/Congrove name. My g-grandfather, Winfield Scott Congo, said the name was changed because someone got "uppety." He always said "I was born Winfield Scott Congo, and I'll die Winfield Scott Congo.' Maybe, at the time in history, there was a bad connotation because of the Negroes coming from the Congo. I just really don't know!

In Wellsville, there were Congo's and Congrove's. Grandad said that Woody Congrove was his cousin, but never explained how.

There's a family tree by he name of Pierson, Samuel and allied families (awt.ancestry.com) Mary Anne Pierson fsengnr@worldnet.att.net. They have both a Winfield Scott Congo and Congrove. My Winfield Scott was married to a Jinny Smith, not a Sarah Clem, so I'm still looking for my great grandfather's family.

Keep in touch, and if I can help you, I would be happy to. Maybe we can sort this out together.

Hi Ken,

I beleive I am a relative of yours. My grandfater was Fred Winfield Congo, born in Meigs County on 8/22/1892. On his death certificate they have his father as Scott Winfield Congo and his mother as Eliza Smith (or Jennie).

I know he had brothers, I beleive they were Charles, Dudley. There was an estrangement betwen the brothers and grandad never talked to them again after they reportedly after they took his farm and sent Scott Winfield up the river to Wellsville to live with Grandad and Nana until his death on 11/5/1935. He is burried outside of Wellsville, on Route 39, in the Oakridge Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Grandad Congo always said we had indian blood in us, but I never heard of negro. Anything is possible.

I know he came from Olive Township in Meiggs County, because I found his two children to his first wife (who died, her name was Jennie Adams). He left his two children there until after the war. They lived with Perry Adams and his family as they were Harley and Velma Congo's grandparents.
When Grandad married Nana (Sara Elizibeth Shepherd), they raised those two and had five more children. One is my mother, Irene Congo Jewell.

We have cousins named Congo and Congrove. S. W. Congo said "he was born a Congo and He'd die a Congo",. He said the name was changed from Congo to Congrove because Congo wasn't high-falutten enough for some. Don'd as me, I just am telling you what was said in our family.

contact me at dent@core.com if you wish.

I am seeking information on the origins of the Congo family in Delaware. There are a lot of Congos in the area, and I am specifically seeking info on the Congos who lived in the Iron Hill, Newark DE area. I found census information stating that in the early 1900's there was a Martha Congo who was head of a household of 5 or 6 daughters. They formerly owned a farm in this area. Many of the Congos also attended the Iron Hill School #112C (segregaged one-room school house).Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Isaac Congo and dau Sally Congo Lawrence in Logan Co, KY

Dear John, My mothers name was Congo. I have reached a wall when it comes to research. I do remember seing the name Isaac Congo on the West Virginia USgenweb, Wirt county, Logan County. There was a Henry Congo who chaned back and forth between Congo and Congrove. My great grandfather, Scott Winfield Congo, use to tell my mother there were certain parts of the family who beleived Congo was not a good enough name who changed it to "Congrove". Can't find any proof of where Scott came from, mother, father, etc. He was born in Bellsville, WVA, and lived in Longbottom, Ohio, Meig County. You might look there also. I'll be happy to send you what I have if you would like.

Good luck,

Linda
Hi, there is a Tribe that is Congaree in North Carolina (If this spelling is incorrect I will come back and correct it), Conoy in Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia. There should be other names close to Congo so keep searching! Migration to Conn. or anywhere else was always open due to the situations of those times. Hope this is helpful
