P. Leighton Conkling 1927-2011

MILLFIELD — P. Leighton Conkling, Ohio University professor emeritus of music, age 83, of Millfield, Ohio passed away Friday morning, Feb. 25, 2011, at his home.

Born July 29, 1927, in Marion, Indiana, he was the son of the late Roscoe B. and Olive Cleo Green Conkling.

Professor Conkling developed a love for music and the cello at a young age, even as a child he accompanied, on the cello, his older brother who played the violin. He was a graduate of Marion (Indiana) High School and after high school enlisted in the U.S. Navy. At the end of World War II, he worked with radio repair at RCA before attending Northwestern University. He graduated from Northwestern with both a Bachelor and Master’s Degrees of Music.
During graduate school, he taught cello at Lawrence University, Wisconsin.
He began his long tenure at Ohio University in 1952, retiring in 1992. He taught cello, bass, and chamber music at Ohio University.
He also taught part-time at Denison University and summers in the string programs at Put-In-Bay
Ethel Eastman Johnson Conkling and William H. Holden

I am looking for information about Ethel E. J. Conkling (Ethel Eastman Johnson Conkling), daughter of the American artist and portrait painter Eastman Johnson. She was married to Alfred Ronald(s) Conkling, nephew of Roscoe Conkling, NY lawyer and politician who served in both the U.S. Senate and House and son of Frederick A. Conkling.

But more specifically, I'm looking for information on William H. Holden, whom Ethel E. J. Conkling (secretly) married in 1922 after the death of Alfred Conkling from whom she had been legally separated for many years. After they were married, they lived in France near/with Ethel's daughter Muriel van Reigersberg Versluys.

This William H. Holden was born in New York City in 1886, may have been a member of the Seventh Regiment in NYC and was involved in the Mexican Border War. He was briefly married to Dorothy Foster, and they had one daughter in 1917. He cleaned out their bank account and disappeared before the child was born. She was adopted by Dorothy's second husband when she was 2 years old. I don't believe this William H. Holden had any other children, and I have no idea if he had brothers or sisters because I can't locate his family in the census records. His mother's name may have been Marie Stevens and his father's name was also William H. Holden who died in 1908. Certainly, Ethel E. J. Conkling knew nothing about his past when she married him.

Much was written about Alfred and Ethel Conkling and their daughters in the NY Times---a lot of dirty laundry regarding marriage, money, estates and mismanagement of funds. I was hoping that perhaps a descendant relative (an Eastman, a Conkling, a Versluys or a Holden) may have heard something about Ethel's marriage to William H. Holden.
Hello,
My wife's aunt was Pauline Roselius (from Oaklahoma), married to Russel Conkling. My wifes fater was Niel Roselius. My wife dosn't know much about the Conklings, it seems Russel died when she was still young. I think all of the immediate Roselius family is now gone.
We would love to know more.
Thanks and good luck.

Trying to find info on Mary A. OR Addie M. CONKLING (b abt 1856 or 1860 in NY & m George Henry BARTON (b 1856, NY)

I believe I've found a discrepancy or at least a nickname for my Great Great Grandmother and I am hoping that there is someone out there who is familiar with the Conkling family that can help me.

My Great Great Grandfather was George Henry Barton. My family tree says that he married Addie M. Conkling in 1877 in New York. When I looked up census information for 1900 and 1910, what I found was the same marriage date, but to "Mary A.".

The children listed are indeed my Great Grandfather and Great Aunts and Uncles, so this tells me that there really was a "Marry A." that lived with, married, and had children with George Henry Barton. The only thing I can figure is that "Mary A." is another name (either nickname or birth name) for Addie M, since their initials are reversed.

Does anyone have any information on either a Marry A. Conkling or an Addie M. Conkling born about 1856 or 1860 in New York?

the census information is from:
1900 United States Federal Census: District 72, Apolacon, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania
1910 United States Federal Census: District 8, Binghamton Ward 2, Broome, New York
