My great great grandfather was Michael Conlon and his daughter's name was Margaret Conlon, born in Ireland Oct. 4, 1856. She married James Mulroy, born in Ireland Jan. 1856. This is probably a longshot but it may lead me somewhere. Pat Murphy Zezelic e-mail erin8464@gmail,com

Re: Burns/Conlon in Sligo, Ireland

Subsequent to my earlier post I have finally discovered the birth certificate of my grandfather, John Burns. It was a bit of a stab in the dark when I sent off for it. I knew that a John Burns had been born in Sligo Town in the second quarter of 1892 and this was one posibility among many. On the Request Form I put the mother as Beesy Burns and the father as probably 'Unknown', possibly 'Conlon'.
I was stunned when I received the certificate. It said that the father was a John Conlon, which was an absolute bonus. Also Beesy Burns, who registered the birth, had put her name as 'Beesy Conlon formerly Burns'.
Undoubtedly to be married to John Conlon had been a heartfelt wish on the part of Beesy, although this never happened, and it seems certain that she named the child, John, after the father.
So I am unbelievably pleased as you can imagine.
The birth took place in Holborn Hill in Sligo town, and this is the same address as the father.
Obviously, the search continues: I am now looking for the birth certificate of my great grandfather, John Conlon.
Beesy Burns was 23 years old when she gave birth.
There is a John Conlon, aged 27, in the 1901 Census lodging in Water Street who is a possible candidate. If this is my GGF then he would have only been 18 years and 13 days when he became a Dad. Needing permission to get married at that age could be the reason why it did not happen: his family may have thought he was too young and Beesy Burns should have known better. I would love to know.
As ever, any assistance would be greatly received.
Thanks John Burns, Lancashire England.
Hello Bruce, I think that the Farrell Conlon above is my GGG Grandfather. I was wondering if you could help me prove it either way. My name is John Burns. My father was John Burns (b 1921). And perhaps not surprisingly my grandfather was John Burns (b.1892). However if my Great, Grandfather had married my Great, Grandmother my name would be Conlon, and not Burns. I hope all that makes sense.
My Great, Grandfather was a John Conlon of Holborn Hill in Sligo. I believe this John Conlon is a grandson (born 1 April 1874) of the Farrell Conlon (1820) Calry, Sligo above. You have said that you have a database of over 720 Conlon individuals and I was wondering if you could help me to confirm my belief, or not, as the case may be.
As I have more information to impart, I have tried to email you on both bimcmull@shaw.ca and bimcmull@telusplanet.net but these email addresses are now defunct.
My email address is bfburnsey@yahoo.com
I would be very glad to hear from you, or anyone else, regarding this.
Thanks
John Burns
Lancashire England.
Hi Lisa, had been in contact with Angela Smith but we couldn't really make a connection. I do not know too much about Bernard as he died when he was 39/40 in NYC and his eldest son (also Bernard; and my grandfather) died when he was 35. We know the elder Bernard was born in June or July 1862. His father was Thomas and we believe his mother was Margaret McGinn(or a variation). It could also be he was from Rathkenny and not Slane. He married Elizabeth Mathews (her father was also a Bernard) on 1/7/1883 in Slane. They came to the US in either 1884 or 1885. She was born in Slane in August or September 1855. Bernard Sr. was a bartender and died in NYC in 1901 or 1902. My mother told me my grandather had an uncle who got him a job at a department store in Brooklyn. When we saw the connection that Patrick Conlon had a job as a dry clerk and that for his 2nd marriage, he mother's name was recorded as McGinn, we just wondered if there was a connection. But I think Patrick died well before my grandfather went to work Loesher's (sp?). He also had an uncle who may have worked for the railroad.

Don't know if we can make a connection or not, but I would be very interested in hearing back. Thanks for contacting me Lisa.

S. Ryan

Liam -

Thank you again for added information.

Michael and Margaret had 9 children, some of them died before I was born:

William, born 12/14/1873
Edward, born 2/26/1876
Anna, born 6/20/1877
Mary, born Dec. 1879
Margaret, born 7/18/1882
James (my father), born 12/11/1884, died 10/15/1954
Michael, born 12/3/1887
Helena, born 7/6/1890
Emma, born 8/9/1892

I believe that Edward must have died young because I never heard my father mention his name. I only found out about him when I sent for the records from the Archdiocese.

Michael Conlon lived in New London, WI and that was where their children were raised. They are buried there in Most Precious Blood Catholic Cemetary.

If you want to send a message to me directly, my e-mail address is: sieber623@hotmail.com

Please keep in touch. I always said I wanted to find out where my grandfather came from in Ireland before I die and I think you have answered that. I hope that is far in the future but I am in my 70's so..... You most likely are a generation apart from me.

Kathleen

Thank you for getting back to me.

What I have been told from my late father William Conlon and my late aunt Brigid Conlon is that Ann and William (known as Billy) lived in the village of Curraun near Ballyvary, Co. Mayo, which is where I was born. They had three sons.
Michael was the only one to emmigrate.
William joined the Royal Irish Constabulary, which was the police force at the time, and moved to Galway and had a family.
John stayed in Curraun and married in 1870 to Brigid O'Donnell, they had 6 children, 1 of which was my grandfather William.
Ann Mulroy and William (Billy) are buried in a Catholic Graveyard in Straide Co. Mayo, which is the local graveyard. Their son John and his wife Brigid are buried with them. At the time their graves were not engraved but were marked out on a map. We have since engraved their names on a stone and placed it over their resting place.

My late Aunt Brigid was also married to a Mulroy, which is a common surname in the area of Straide and could also possibly be a link to Ann Mulroy. My father told me that Ann was always known locally as "Aine Mor" (meaning big Ann) I think this was in reference to her height.
I would be interested to know what your father's name was as we found out through www.familysearch.org that according to the US census of 1900, Michael and Margaret had 9 children, 1 of which died, though not all children are listed (6 out of the 8 are there).

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Kind Regards
Liam

Liam, thank you so much. I believe you are filling in the information that I need to continue and hopefully I can be of some help to you as well. My grandfather, Michael, was indeed a child of William Conlon and Ann Mulroy and, according to his death certificate, he was born on Oct. 23, 1839 and died on June 23, 1914. He is buried in a Catholic cematery in New London, WI. I belong to a group of people researching the Mulroy family and so far we hadn't been able to find out where William and Ann came from in Ireland, or if they emigrated to the US. Michael emigrated in around 1864. I have been unable to figure which date from the US census. It could be a 1864 or 1869. I never knew if Michael had siblings so I am excited to learn that he did. I will be anxious to hear further from you and relay whatever information I have that will help you.

Thank you so much.

Kathleen

Hello Kathleen.

My name is Liam Conlon and I am tracing my ancestry also. My great great grandparents William and Ann (nee Mulroy) Conlon from Co. Mayo, had three sons, John, William and Michael. From what i know, John was born in 1839 and William was born in 1847 according to the 1901 Irish census. I presume Michael was born between 1840 and 1846 so 1842 seems about right. He was not in the 1901 census as he had emmigrated at this point. I know he emmigrated to the US but there seems to have been no communication with him after this. My daughter and I have been tracing Michael Conlon, married to Margaret Cooney, family history simply because of the childrens' names' connection (Ann & William). We have been trying to find documentation to see whether Michael's parents were in fact Ann Mulroy and William Conlon from Curraun, Ballyvary, Co. Mayo but have not came across this as of yet. In fact this is how we discovered your thread. The names and locations seem to match with your information and I would be very interested to hear if you have discovered anything else as I have been tracing this for years. I am a decendant of John's, and still reside in Co. Mayo, Michael would have been his brother.

I would be very grateful of a response regarding this and looking forward to hearing from you...

Kind Regards,

Liam Conlon

Hello-- can anyone help? I'm searching for info on my great great grandmother: Catharine A Conlon b 1856 in Canada, m Isaac Griffith in Saint Lawrence County, New York, d 1918- buried St Mary's Cemetary, Ogdensburg, NY.

I do not know her parents' names but i have found a Canadian census of 1871 from Grenville South- Ontario with the name Catharine Conlon. The area would be very close to the region of NY that she lived after marriage. This census shows a father Thomas Conlon (b abt 1827 Ontario) and mother, Catharine (b abt 1834 Ireland). (other siblings were Esther, Mary, Bridget, Isabella, Elizabeth, James & John.)
Can anyone help me with more information so that I can learn if this is the same person I'm searching for?
Both parents born in Ireland but all children in either Rainhill or St Helens. Eldest 3 children were old enough to be on 1891 census with parents but I cannot find any of the family before 1901. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm interested in finding out where my gggrandfather came from in Ireland. I only know that he was born somewhere in Ireland in 1829, emigrated to New York & was married to Eliza Flannigan before 1859. They had 5 children, 3 girls who died very young & 2 boys - one of whom is my ggrandfather William Francis Conlon b. 1859 in NYC, died 1900 in Englewood, NJ.

Thanks,
Marita

Burns/Conlon in Sligo, Ireland

My name is John Francis Burns and I was born in
Sligo Town on 14th August 1951.

My father was also John Burns, born 24/7/21 in Rope Walk, Sligo. When I was born my parents were living at
36 Garavogue Villas in Sligo.

My grandfather was also a John Burns, born about 1897 in Sligo? On 19/8/1920, he married my grandmother Catherine (Kate) Moran, in Sligo Cathedral. Her father was Thomas (Tom) Moran and he was married to a Mary Jane McCarrick. They also lived in Rope Walk, Sligo and had a parcel of children.

My great grandmother was Bridget (Beezy?) Burns. She had my grandfather, (the John Burns above) out of wedlock. My great grandfather - who probably wasn't that great because he didn't marry her - was called CONLON. So, as you can see, I get my name Burns through the female line.

I would dearly love to find out anything about Beezy Burns and your man CONLON. I shall be grateful for any help.
Thanks
