The Caleb Connell & John Connell Mystery!

Headstone found for Caleb & John Connell

I have a Caleb Connell, born October 21, 1835, died September 14, 1896 who is buried in Mount Zion Cemetery near Macomb, Pottawatomie Co. OK. Since the birth date is the same as your Caleb Connell, do you think he is your Caleb Connell?

Caleb Connell is buried in a section of this very remote cemetery that is enclosed by a fence. Included within the fenced area are 8 graves. Four of them are unmarked except by sandstone rocks. The other three graves in the fenced section are John Connell, born June 26, 1875, died July 24, 1909; Alice Johnson, born Oct 27, 1890, d. March 23, 1893; and Florence Johnson, born March 20, 1896, d. Dec 26, 1896.

Someone has visited these graves during the past few years because they are marked by some orange ribbons.

Mount Zion Cemetery is located in the middle of a 640 acre section of land and there is no road that leads to the cemetery. To get to the cemetery you have to climb over a fence and trek 1/2 mile through dense woods. I have a lot of family buried in this cemetery including my great-great grandparents, my great-grandfather, and my mother's baby brother, plus about a dozen other families. We hadn't been to the cemetery in many years until about 5 years ago. When we started walking through the woods toward the cemetery we noticed some orange ribbons hanging from tree limbs - they marked a trail to the cemetery. When we got to the cemetery, the orange ribbons were also marking the fenced section of the cemetery where the Connell graves are located.

Mount Zion Cemetery is almost like a "family cemetery" as more than half of the burials there are my family.

Lawrence County Probate, 1845-1870, Box 5, File 135:
Connell, William, deceased; John Connell, Adm. Letters, Mar. 21, 1857, names as one of his heirs, Joshua Connell of Lawrence County, Missouri. A copy of this record can be obtained by writing the Clerk of the Probate Court at the Courthouse in Mount Vernon.

No mention of Joshua’s twin Caleb

Caleb & Lena & 4 children on the 1870 Census, no other Census for this family until 1910 for Lena Connell saying she’s a widow.
