Re: Samuel Connick b. 1818 d. 1895 in Red Oak Iowa

Well, I don't really have any information on Samuel yet. I think he is somehow connected to my Frederick Connick, but I'm not sure how. I did just find a cemetery listing for Mary and Samuel. Samuel died 19 June 1896 @ age 77 and Mary died Mar 1891. They are buried in Hewitt Cemetery in Red Oak. I got that off the IA Genweb.
Frederick Connick married Sarah Warren in about 1876. At least two of their children were born in Red Oak. The children I know about are Oscar, Winnie (my great grandmother), Rolly, and Ransome. Does any of this connect with you? I believe that Samuel and Frederick are somehow related, because on the 1885 Iowa State Census Samuel and Mary Connick as well as Charles and Della (not sure) Connick are listed on the same page as Daniel and Fidelia Horn. I know that Fidelia Horn is the sister of my Frederick Connick. I know that's pretty confusing so write me if you want clarification.

My ggg grandfather was Elijah (Eliza) Connick. He was born abt 1803. He married Dorcas Susanna Gibbons 11/20/1827 in Baden Md.

I cannot find who Elijah's parents were. If you have any info to share, please do!!

Also, I'd like info on Clement R. Connick. He was born abt. 1799 in the same area. I'd love to find out if Elijah and Clement were related (maybe brothers?). From what I can find on census records, Clement was a very wealthy man!

I can give you more information about Charles LeBourdais. He was born on July 19, 1850 in L'Islet, Quebec, child #7 of 14 children of parents Jean-Baptiste Augustin (b. 1814) and Appoline Bernier (b. 1823). Charles did go to Michigan and you may be right about the date being 1874. There doesn't seem to be much information around about Sarah Ballor, spellings of both of her names also differ. Charles and Sarah had 7 children. Are you related to one of them?

Eleanor LeBourdais
Am still searching for connections to my 1851 emigrant ancestor (see my other postings.) Interesting that your James worked on the Erie canal. My Connick settled in Lima, NY, which is not too far from that canal. Good hunting! John

Thanks for the info!! I had David's info but not Orrilla's. While I have suspected that Orrilla Lidell was David's wife, I haven't seen anything that substantiated this (only that David's son was Dwight Liddell McConick and Dwight named his daughter Orrilla!).

If you want to correspond re: John & Abigail, I have some information (sometimes contradictory) on John's lineage. Abigail's is fairly well documented. John's father James Conick (or McConick) was captured after the battle of Bunker Hill. It APPEARS that he was married to a Betsey as well as an Elizabeth - in some places, they assume these are the same women. Also, I have copies of John's Revolutionary War pension file. Please contact me if you want any of this information. My e-mail is janet.samuels at asu.edu (I didn't use the @ sign in the hopes of people not being able to harvest my e-mail address!)

Janet,

I noted that your post was a few years old, but I just saw it for the first time. In case you are stilling looking for information I thought I would pass this on.
John and Abigail are in my line through their daughter Polly (aka Mary). A few years ago I stopped at the Schuyler Lake Cemetery in Exeter to view the headstones of John & Abigail. I did make some notes of other related headstones near theirs. There was a row of nine of them together. Three that might be of interest to you are:

"David McConnick [he appeared to use the Mc], Died April 29, 1845, AE 51 y'rs. We feel no mourn, though he is gone To join the holy happy throng We hope in Christ to meet again. Beyond all earthly care and pain."

To his left is:

"Ordilla Lidell, wife of Benjamin Morehouse, formerly wife of David McConick, Died Dec 27, 1858, aged 55 y'rs 4 mo. & 8 da's."

To his right is:

"In memory of Mrs. Sally, wife of David Conick [no Mc here] who died June 28, 1825 aged 30 years 6 months & 17 days. Go where to love and enjoy are one, and till I share your joy forgive my grief of love sincere oh this last pledge receive a s.....[the rest is buried and unreadable].

I found a name I wondered if you knew anything about: Thomas DeHaven Connick. His mother's maiden name was listed as Hine. He was born between 1945-1950 (to not disclose too much), in Humboldt County. I can't help but think he is a descedent of Sarah's. Do any of these names sound familiar? Please respond either to this posting or my email. Thanks in advance. Jules

My interest is in Connicks who are
descendants of William and Agnes (called Nancy) Wilson
Connick of Charlotte County who went to Eureka in about
1860. You will find much in Eureka records as there were
many Connicks who settled there.

Hi Bill, Thanks for the respnose and info. I had tried them as well some years ago. It took them close to a year to respond and came up dry -- but I suspect they were still getting organized back then, and will do better now. I would really appreciate knowing how it goes with their search for you - perhaps I'll resubmit mine if your ecperience is good. Best wishes, John

John, I commissioned a search for my Connick ancestors by the Yola Farmstead Folk Park, a Wexford Genealogy Centre, Tagoat-Rosslare Harbor, Ireland (http://homepage.eircom.net/~yolawexford/yolapeople.html). You may already be aware of this site, but it seems to offer much help for reasonable fees. Connick is one of the names associated with the "Yola People" of Co. Wexford. Bill

My great great grandfather, William Connick, had a son, James, who was born in about 1835 in Co. Wexford, Ireland. He emigrated to the U.S. and resided in Mobile, AL in the 1850's. His mother may have been Mary Barry Connick, but I have not been able to verify that. The family was Catholic. I do not know about any siblings, except there is a possibility that he came to Mobile to live with a married sister who emigrated before he did. I am anxious to find out more about James' family in Ireland.

I was always told that Connick was an Irish name. I have found one location that gives the name James Connick as his father and Lucinda Shaw as his mother. Does anyone know more information about this Connick line.

Ernie Our Hendricks may well be related but I have not yet been able to trace sibs, parents or town of my Wexford Hendrick ancestors who emigrated to States about 1851 after having 5 children. Once I have done that I hope to connect with others realted. Good luck, and please keep me posted of any developments (when time permits I hope to search parish records from Wexford, which can be obtained on microfilm from local Latter Day Saints libraries).
William, sorry to say that I have not been able to make any connection between our Connick ancestors - but that is because I have as yet been unable to learn any more about the sibs, parents, town, etc of my Connick (see original posting), othar than that she emigrated to upstate NY from Co Wexford about 1851 after m. a Hendrick and having 5 children in Wexford. I also came across an alternative spelling "Cunnick" for her, and found the same spelling in some Irish records. May or may not be any significance. Best wishes, and please let me know if you make any connections. John

Dear Roseanne,
I have logged onto so many of these Family History search programs I had forgotten about this one. Just stumbled accross it and saw your message. Please send me whatever you have about Patrick Connick from New Jersey. He was my GGrandfather on my dad's side. What little information I have been able to find is that Patrick was born approximately September 1849 in Dublin, Ireland. He married Annie or Anna Griffith(s) in 1889.
My Grandmother was Honora or Nora Connick, born 29 Jan 1882 in Hoboken, died 15 July 1961 in Passaic, also in N.J. I would be most grateful for anything you might have that would help me. Thank you, Dennis J. Maher
p.s. I am L.D.S., and have found most of this in the Family History Library through census records.

Dear Roseann,
I have a copy of a 1900 Census from Hoboken, New Jersey. It lists my GGFather as Head of house. D.O.B. is 1849, September. Wife Anna D.O.B. is 1853, July. Children, Anna March 1879,
Nora (my Grandmother) Jan. 1881, Sarah, Feb. 1883, Lizzie, Nov. 1884, Kate, May 1887, Joseph, August 1890, John, January 1893. Patrick wife Anna were both born in Ireland, while all children were born in New Jersey. Patrick immigrated in 1874, and Anna in 1875. Patrick's occupation is listed as Truckman. Both could read and write English. They married in 1877, as they indicated they had been married for 23 years. There you have it. I am ordering the 1920 census records at the Family History Center, and hopr to gather additional information. I will keep you posted as to what I discover. Thanks for answering. Where abouts in Florida are you? We have taken a family vacation the last two years from Kansas to Panama CIty Beach, where we meet my brother and his family from Georgia. Florida sounds awfully good right now as we have about 6 inches of fresh snow on the ground. Talk to you soon, Denny

Dear Roseann,
Thanks so much for the phone call and the information you sent me. Some of it I already had. As a matter of fact some was information I had submitted to the LDS files. I'm not sure why it indicated "name of person submitting unknown or unavailable". I certainly want to communicate with anyone else working on the Connick line. I am sending you what information I have. Some is quite old, (81), and some more recent. Hope it helps in your search. By the way, I was wondering if you were LDS. I happen to be LDS, and am always facinated to discover if my contacts are as well. Anyway, good luck, and happy hunting. Should I run onto anything else, I will forwaard it to you. Thanks again, Denny

Dear Jim,
Just checking my genealogy message boards, and found your reply to Roseann. She has been corresponding with me for about a year. My Connick connection begins with my paternal Grandmother, Honora (Nora) Connick Maher. She was a daughter of Patrick COnnick born in Ireland September of 1849, and Annie (Anna) Griffith(s). They were married in 1877.
The 1900 census from Jersey City listed Grandma as being born in January 1881 in Hoboken, Hudson County, New Jersey. She was one of seven: Anna, dob March 1879, then grandma, Nora, dob Jan. 1881, Sarah, dob Feb 1883, Elizabeth(Lizzie), dob Nov. 1884, Catherine (Kate), dob May 1887, Joseph, dob Aug. 1890, John, dob Jan. 1893.

This has been a real mystery to try and solve. My father only remembered his Grandpa Patrick speaking with an Irish brogue, and saying that he thought he arrived in the USA through Boston, MA. I have been unable to verify that. Any information you can share would be greatly appreciated. My e-mail address is denny@par1.net
My mailing address is 203 North Washington Ave. Chanute, KS 66720
Thanks, Denny

I am very excited to share information I received from my Great Uncle Harry DeHaven, who resides in Middleton, Idaho.

I received a scanned copy of two pages of a nine-page letter written by Sarah DeHaven Connick to her brother, Harvey James DeHaven (my line).

The letter is fairly clear except for one area; I interjected my own opinion in [].

So, enjoy and I am so excited to learn of this information to confirm suspicions!!! I know it will help out people on my line immensely. If this does tie into anyone lines, please let me know. I would love to add your information into my database. Thanks, Jules Summers-Leighton

"Page 8. but there is a prospect of Eureka being the terminus of a trans continental railroad. If she is, wont she
b _ _ _ n?
[I believe Sarah meant to write, "Where was she born?" It is unclear if my Great Uncle possesses the previous pages of this letter... If so I will continue to share the information.]

"I tell John C. that is the only thing that will keep us out of the pour house."

"I expect the reading of this letter will wear out your patience, but I am going to come to a stop pretty soon. I do not know much of our family history. We crossed the plains from Missouri to Cal. in 1849. I do not know where father was born but think in Penn,
Jacob DeHaven born Sept. 26th 1812
Elizabeth Wells " " Aug 22, 1822
Frances Mary " " Aug 7th, 1841"

(top of last page-9)
"Abram DeHaven born Feb 22,d 1843
John Jefferson " " March 12th 1845
Sarah Ellen " " March 6th 1847
Elizabeth " " July 9th, 1851
Harvey James " " June 18th , 1854
Elizabeth " " May 5th 1856

"Elizabeth Wells our mother was born in Ohio and raised in Illinois, Died in Eureka, Calif. I think that Abram died in Tulare Co. early in 1876.

"Good bye for this time.
Your aff. Sister
Sarah DeHaven Connick"
I don't know if I have previously replied to your posting but I am also looking for a Eugene (or Owen) Connick born in Wexford, married to ? O'Neill and whose son Owen Thomas or Thomas Owen left Ireland for Canada in the 1830s or 40s and settled on the Gaspé Coast.
Do you have anything that might tie us to the same ancestor?
