Bantry Bay, Cork , Elizabeth Carey and Cornelius Connolly & children: Patrick, James, Maria, Eliza, Eugene, Honora, and Michael

Hi,

Trying to locate info on Cornelious Connolly & Eliza Carey & children, from Bantry, Cork & Ross. On Irish Genealogy, I was able to find that, Cornelius & Elizabeth were married in the Roman Catholic Church, Parish Schull East, Cork on April 24,1853. Witnesses: Michael Shanahane & Jerh (Jeremiah?) Connelly/Connolly. Additionally, found the following children baptized in Bantry:

Patrick Connolly, Baptized on March 12, 1854 sponsors: Pat Donovan & Kate Cronen.

James Connolly, Baptized on January 12, 1856 sponsors: John Sullivan & Eliza Connolly.

Eliza Connolly, Baptized on October 15, 1859 sponsors: Jeremiah (Connolly?) & Honora Connolly.

----- Connolly, Baptized March 1862 sponsors: Eugene Connolly & Mary Mahony.

Honora Connolly, Born March 31, 1864, Baptized on April 2, 1864 sponsors: Jeremiah Connolly & Haron Sullivan.

Eugene Joseph Connolly, Baptized on February 1, 1866 sponsors: Cornelius Cronin & Mary Connolly.

Michael Connolly, Baptized on November 14, 1869 sponsors: Joannes Shanahan & Margarita Casey. Not 100% sure if Michael is ours, as the register states his mother's name as being Eliza Casey, but the actual ledger entry looks like it could as easily, be transcribed as Carey.

Maria/ Mariah Connolly, D.O.B. unknown. Can't find Maria Connolly, in the Church records, & the only definitive US record, is the 1920 Brooklyn, NY Census, listed as being 62 years of age, born in 1858, married to Patrick Murphy age 48. There are a number of errors in that record for the Poole/Connolly/Grossmann/Murphy household so am not sure who the informant was. According to my Mom, Maria Connolly came from Ireland to NY, to care for her sister, Elizabeth Anne Connolly's children, after Elizabeth Anne died in 1910; but I have a book presented to "Auntie" in January 1891 in Boise City, Idaho, so assume that, she was either living in, or visiting the US as early as 1891, rather then arriving for the first time in 1910, or went back to Ireland, & then returned following Elizabeth Anne's death to help her recently widowed brother-in-law, Bartholomew J. Poole raise the children. She was possibly employed as a cook/ house keeper in Boise. Her own husband, Patrick Murphy disappeared & was believed to have been murdered. Have looked, but been unable to find a newspaper clipping regarding his disappearance/murder, or an obit for Maria. She would likely have been buried from Our Lady of Lourds Church in Brooklyn & interned in Calvary Cemetery, & living at 87 Eldert Street, Brooklyn at the time of her death.

One of Cornelius, and Eliza's children was supposed to have been killed while working up at Croton Dam in upstate NY, when he kicked a box of dynamite in anger, on a frigidly cold day, and it discharged.I don't have his first name, or a D.O.D. but piecing together family recollections, the death likely occurred sometime between 1891 to 1901. He may have left two children behind: Eugene, age 11 & Mary, age 10 listed on the 1910 NY census, living w/ Eugene Connolly & wife Susan McCabe. The children mysteriously appear listed as son and daughter in the 1910 NY Census, but Eugene and Susan were only married in 1905. So perhaps Eugene Connolly Jr and Mary Connolly are the children of the sibling who died at Croton, or are Susan's children from an earlier marriage, or were adopted after their marriage. They disappear after Eugene Sr's death, and Susan appears to be living with only her daughter, Lillian Connolly.

Cornelius & Eliza Carey may have had other children in addition to the ones I've located. There is a another Cornelius Connolly who fathers a significant tribe of Connollys, and a Cors Connolly, equally prolific also living in the parish. Not sure if Cors might be an abbreviation of my GG Grandfather's name, or if there were any later marriages for Cornelious or Eliza.

The only immigrations/naturalizations that I am aware of are: Elizabeth Anne, Eugene, Maria/Mariah, and the son who died at Croton Dam.

The family supposedly worked at the Earl of White's estate, Bantry Bay House. The Bantry House estate registers are now located in the archives at Cork University, so have not been able to pursue that lead any further. One of my Great Grandmother sisters, was purportedly to be a talented seamstress according to my aunt. I have some lovely hand work of Elizabeth Anne's, so she may even have been the seamstress mentioned, or the reference might be to her Sister-in-law, Elizabeth Poole who was a seamstress.

Wondering about the worth of locating copies of the Irish Civil Registrations, if they exist, of the above births and marriage. Would I gain further info on the family, such as addresses, professions and burial info?

Recently stumbled across an online Irish Historic Newspaper Archive, but subscriptions are astronomical. Is there a low cost means of accessing historic Irish newspaper collections, online or through a US Family History Center? Am sure it might be fruitful to run an obit search on the above family members.

Thanks so much, Annie

No worries, problem with names that came out of Ireland, that I have noticed, is that most people have the same name, being first and last names, which makes it very hard when chasing our family histories. good luck in your research.

Jodie

I am also assuming that Owen never had any family (I could be wrong thought) I assume this as he is burried with his sister and her family, and he doesn't appear to have any family of his own from what I am able to find at this stage.

It does sound very samiliar the names, I'm not too sure of the living in Sydney part, but I do know for certain that they are all burried in the Bathurst cemetary, so I am assuming that they all lived there for a while.

Hello Jos, my name is John Hegarty and one of the surnames I am researching is Smyth. WE have Ellen, Patrick and Owen Smyth all coming from Faltagh, Monaghan to Australia between 1850 and 1860.The remittance money for Ellen and Patrick was paid by Owen Smyth. From what you have posted an Owen Smyth paid for the remittance of your Connolly family. Is there a chance that these Owens are one and the same?. Our Owen lived in Waverley, Sydney and Ellen and Patrick were from Kempsey in the Macleay shire. We have tracked a big family of Smyths.Do we have any connections?.

Irish Genealogy is a wonderful free site where you can search church baptism, marriage and burial records, and see scans of the actual registries. As baptism and marriage witnesses are listed as well, you can gain a sense of who might also be related to your ancestor.

Have you tried searching for information on the family in the Brooklyn Eagle, and the Old Fulton NY Newspaper Archives? Both are free and wonderful sources. Additionally, there's the NY Times Newspaper Archive. Find the family in the NY census, and then run any addresses where they lived in the paper archives, or the last name and key words/professions etc., or just Connolly and Bronx.

Good Luck, Annie

My Connolly's are from Bantry Bay, Cork, Ireland, and possibly worked on Lord White's Estate, Bantry House in Cork. The only info I have on our family is that my great Grandmother Elizabeth Anne Connolly was born in 1861-1863 in Ireland,(year of immigration 1882) and had a brother named Eugene Connolly who was killed in an explosion at Croton Dam, and that either she, or her sister was a seamstress. She lived in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and married Bartholomew J. Poole and was the mother to Joseph W, Eugene Joe, George Grover Georgie, Francis, Mary Elizabeth Mae, Veronica Geneave Vera, Martha Irene, and Lillian Margaret Poole and that they lived at 87 Elderth Street Brooklyn NY.

We have been trying to trace my Husband’s Connolly family who arrived in England between 1864 and 1867 from Cork and would like to hear from anyone connected to the family or if anyone can be of further assistance-----

The information we do know is that Catherine Connolly(born in Cork) married John McCarthy( born in Cork-Father Daniel McCarthy deceased) in Dartford Kent in 1867.
On the marriage Certificate her age was given 16 but then crossed out&given as 17 years old.Born approx. 1850.
The witnesses names were Michael Murphy and Mary Connolly.
Catherine’s Father was Cornelius Connolly.
Also we do know that some of Catherine’s siblings were with her in Stepney re 1871 Census.Unfortunately we have not been able to trace Catherine’s siblings after this.Verbally informed that two went to America but no time scale.
1871 Census Stepney London
MCCARTHY, John
Head
M
28

MCCARTHY, Catherine
Wife
F
20

MCCARTHY, John
Son
M
1

CONNOLLY, Hannah
Sister-in-law
F
12

CONNOLLY, John
Brother-in-law
M
11

CONNOLLY, Bridget
Sister-in-law
F
7

Recently we have found the following entries which maybe the correct family.

http://www.irishgenealogy.ie

ROSSALETTIRI & KILKERAUNMOR (ROSCARBERY & LISSEVARD)
Baptism of JOHANNA CONNOLLY of THE ?- on 31 July 1856- Parents-CURLY CONOLLY and JOHANAH SULLIVAN-Sponsors -JOHN HEGARTY and JOHA COLLINS

ROSSALETTIRI & KILKERAUNMOR (ROSCARBERY & LISSEVARD
Baptism of JOHN CONOLLY of CURRAGH on 18 June 1858-Parents-CURLY CONOLLY and JOHANAH SULLIVAN-Sponsors-MICK MINIHANE and CATH BOHANE
Recorded Parochial Area DUNMANWAY

Baptism of BRIDGET CONOLLY of GARRYBAUN on N/R April 1863-Parents-CURLY CONOLLY and JOHANAH SULLIVAN-Sponsors -TIMY CONOLLY and ANNE HOURIHAN

ARDFIELD & RATHBARRY

Baptism of CATE CONELLY of N/R on 12 April 1849-parents -CON CONELLY and JOAN SULLIVAN –sponsors--THOS SULLIVAN and MARY DRISCOLL- on the orginal entry from Bane/Bare Hill????

We do not know at present if the Mother- Johanna and Joan Sullivan are the same person as we have not been able to find any marriage/s between Cornelius Connolly and Johanna Sullivan/Joan Sullivan.

Hello Amanda, nice to see you replied to this message.
Connolly and Joyce are indeed common surnames for Galway and if I were to guess, most likely at least 70 percent of those with that name came from Galway. Annie Joyce was my grandmother's maiden name and Michael Connolly my grandfather. Galway is the county as you may know, and within the county are parishes/areas that narrow down where your people may have come from. If you can get your hand on your father's birth certificate it may not just say Galway for his mother or father but may list, something akin to what we might call city and state, like in my case Lettermore, County Galway. Once you can narrow down the particular section, the easier it will be. I am lucky enough to still have cousins that were born there and go back and forth, so I am sure if you can narrow down the lineage to something close to my area, they would be more than happy to help. Please feel free to contact me anytime as you look it up, my email is pegwagner09@gmail.com.
Best of luck and it would be wonderful if we were related, if not, still would like to hear from you.
Peg
Hi, i'm researching my family genealogy and came across your post. My great grandmother was Anne Connolly (born about 1894), her parents were Mary Joyce and John Connolly, all from Galway. I'm wondering if we are related in some way.

Amanda

Hello,

My 3g-grandmother was Ellen Connolly, who married Daniel McCarthy of Garryglass 6-Mar-1821. Connolly baptism sponsors for the McCarthy children are Derby (likely Jeremiah - he is listed a few times); Norry, Patt (Batt?) and Donal. Ellen Connolly McCarthy was alive at least until Nov-1860, at which time she was a baptism sponsor of my g-grandmother Margaret McCarthy.

I am assuming Daniel McCarthy my 3g-grandfather married a girl from a local family.

If any of those Connolly names sound like your family, please drop a line.

I have a family tree chart of McCarthy Knock with my Ellen Connolly here:
http://www.sjbar.com/irishGenealogy/McCarthys_from_Drinagh.j...

Unfortunately I am not a member of ancestry.com so I can't view your trees.

What source exactly is "irish genealogy?"

My 3g-grandmother was apparently from near Garryglass, Drinagh, Co Cork, Ireland and married in 1821 so any baptism record for her would fall out of the range of available records for the RC parish of Drimoleague & Drinagh. So I am doubtful that you would have records for her.

Thanks anyway.

"Rookie" researcher here having a need to pinpointing geographic locations in Co Fermanagh and Co Louth. TOPIC: Hugh Connolly marries Anne Leonard and later has a daughter Jane Connolly b. abt. 1833 Fermanagh, Ireland. This daughter later marries 23 Sept. 1853 in Worcester, Massachusetts USA to James McEvoy b. 1 Aug. 1830 Co Louth.

(1)--Fermanagh experts, was it possible Hugh was catholic and anne was French Hugonot and, if so, where would the marriage record be located ie. catholic or protestant?

(2)--Our McEvoys are catholic; however, my grandfather spelled it McAvoy---reasons?

(3)--Jane (Co Fermanagh) and James (Co Louth) met somewhere, so geographically where would be the best odds to start searching?---perhaps they met in Massachusetts??

(4)--for the experts in Fermanagh, where in present-day Co Fermanagh would the stats. be high for Connollys and Leonards living close by? Same for McEvoys in Co Louth??

****I hope there is someone who'll lift this brickwall, thanks.

I am trying to trace the descendants of my grandmother’s brother James Joseph Connolly born 26 May 1874 in Tempo, co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland and who emigrated to Glasgow. He married Julia McGill and he died on 23 April 1946 at 9 Melbourne Street, Glasgow aged 71. His father was Thomas Connolly a farmer and his mother was Catherine Connolly nee Breen.

He had a son T Connolly who was present when he died. I do not know his son’s first name, but I am guessing that the T may stand for Terence (the name of his uncle) or Thomas (the name of his grandfather).
CONNOLLY
I am looking for info on Robert Henry Connolly who married Elizabeth Robinson d/o. Joseph Robinson and Ann Reid/ Robinson of Drumherriff North (near Castleblayney) Co Monaghan. They married in 1876 in Castleblayney and went to NZ the same year. They did not return to Ireland. Oral history says Robert had siblings who went to the US, Canada, and Australia.

Robert Henry Connolly was b. 1850 in Co Donegal. His father’s Christian name was John and he was believed to have been b. c. 1830. His mother’s maiden surname may have been Quigley.

Do you have any knowledge of these people?

Co-incidentally, Robert and Elizabeth had a daughter Sarah Jane Connolly b. in New Zealand.

I have no knowledge of the surname Sherry. I look forward to your reply. Thanks and regards. Fleasil.

I am trying to find more information about Betty Anne Cregan. Most of the pin-up girls were either starlets or models and were or became relatively well known and there is abundant information about them. But Betty Anne Cregan is a mystery -- there is nothing.

Hello Greg - Your message on Rootsweb landed in my inbox today.

There are 2 areas which your Connolly/Dempsey family are reflected in mine:

Robert Henry Connolly b. in Co Donegal Ireland (on his kids birth certs) 1850.
Married in 1876 in Castleblayney Co Monaghan to an Elizabeth Robinson d. of Joseph and Ann (Reid) Robinson. Robinsons of Co Monaghan. In 1876 Robert and Elizabeth left Ireland for New Zealand and did not return.
Oral history: Robert’s father was named John - his mother’s name is unknown. Robert had a sister named Lucy. There were other siblings who went to America, Canada and Australia. I have no knowledge of their names. This is my paternal side.

Dempsey - on my maternal side. G.g.grandmother Mary Dempsey married to a John Woods (b. 1815). They were married in Kilrea Co. Derry in 1836. I have not yet researched them but believe both to have been b. in Co Derry. The Woods were established in the Kilrea area and I am told Irish weddings are always in the brides parish so Mary. As far as I can establish the Connolly’s and Woods/Dempsey families were not aware of each other at the time my g.grandfather Connolly married and left Ireland. The connection between the two families occurred in New Zealand.

Does this ring any bells for you? Regards - fleasil.
My 2g grandmother was Margaret Connolly from around Skibbereen, not far from Drinagh. She was born around around 1810 and lived until 1904. We don't know where she was from, or anything about her family.

She married Jeremiah Walsh of Skeagh, Skibbereen in 1838, and lived on his farm until her death in 1904. We know of three children: Mary, born 1839; Jeremiah, born 1845, and Daniel, born 1850.

Probably the only way we'll find our Connolly family is if someone knows about an old relative that married into a Walsh family around Skibbereen.

Barbara in St. Louis, Missouri USA

Sarah connolly or Connelly

My great grandmother Sarah Connolly came from Galway or Cork at the age of 11 or 12 years old, so the story goes. Sarah was born from 1869 to 1871. Her mother was Mary Kerr and her father was Mark Connolly or Connelly. She came through New York or Boston. I am really at a loss. If anyone could help me please.
Barb

Hi Anne, I don't think our James had a sister Kate, but I'm not 100% sure. He was married to a Katherine (Kitty Kavanagh) and his brother George married a Katherine. I do have pictures and a lot more information now about him and his family. He also had a brother Patrick (wife Sophia). Feel free to private message me here if you'd like to see what I have. He had an extensive, very public criminal history if that helps in identifying him. Soooo many James J Connollys at that time in that region. It took me a while to find the one I was searching for. Good luck!

Hi,

My grandfather was Patrick Declan Connelly born June 1888 in Tipperary. I know he came from a big family and I am pretty sure that his parents were John & Mary but that's about it. Sound like any possible family member? Let me know. Thanks.

Hi Suzann

What a coincidence..I had not looked at this site for years and had forgotten my original posting. In an idle moment yesterday, I happened to google Redmond Joyce Connolly and up came your message, posted an hour earlier!

Thanks for the info about John Francis Connolly and Olive, who were 2 of the 10 children of Redmond Joyce Connolly. I had managed to get his baptismal cert off RootsIreland, but it's great to get confirmation of the Joyce connection.
I have cousins called Elizabeth and Redmond, so it seems the names may have passed down through my branch of the Connollys as well.

I'd be grateful if you were able to give me birth and death dates for Redmond Joyce and his wife, whose name I don't know.If you want any details from me, let me know
