Hello Peter
As you see I am a Conolly. The family originally was from Ireland and my ggg grandfather was Daniel, purportedly related to Thomas Conolly, of Castletown, Celbridge, County Kildare although I'm having problems going further back due to the problem with Irish records and the Troubles. My husband and I have seen the house, typically Georgian and grand and currently being restored by the Guiness family. If you have an gen at all prior to 1852, I would be really interested.
G-day

I have got Connolly's in my family tree. Her name Emma Mary Connolly and her parents are Matthew Connolly and Eliza. I found in my Grandfathers Family tree book that his mother was related to the Barnado Home so maybe we could be related.

Cheers

Hi,

Thank you so much for replying I really appreciate it.

My George Conolly was possibly from the Dublin area. he immigrated to Philadelphia about 1830. He was born about 1813. I believe he was a protestant. Around 1930 my grandfather inherited an Irish castle or at least he was among the list of people who inherited. Unfortunately the name is long forgotten. My father thought it was in the Dublin area but was not sure.

My George married in PA and also lived in VA and Ohio and finally settled in MI. There seem to have been several Conolly families in Michigan at the time but I have not been able to connect them.

I don't think my family fits w/ yours but would it be alright if I forward it to Jim Conolly who lives in NY? I think he has bookbinders in his family.

Most sincerely,
Jenny Maguire

Re: Conolly - Dublin and Galway George

Sean O'Neil of Dublin research finds that George
>Conolly (2.) [thought to be ours] was likely the son of
>George Conolly (birthdate unknown) and mother Esther, who was baptised
>July 12, 1747 a Catholic in the St. Andrews Church in Dublin. George 1.
>died
>in 1764. Each of these ancestors were cordwainers, the makers of fine
>leather shoes, and shoemakers. Their work with leather evolved into book
>binding and then printing. Perhaps there was some blood relation to the
>family of Speaker Conolly futher back but not found on this research.
>
>By 1775 the second (our) George had died or gone away as he disappears from
>the records. George's son, Caleb Conolly was born in 1774 with
>a
>first name that is virtually unknown to Catholics which indicates that his
>father had become a protestant. Caleb lived in Dublin at 30 Anne Street
>with
>latter records indicating his relocation to Galway by 1816. Caleb had a
>brother, George, who also lived in Dublin through 1797, and then removed to
>Galway.
>
>As you will see, there are some holes in his research which you may be able
>to fill from yours, as Sean was not provided with much other than Caleb
>Henry's brief notes on 1747 George and his protestant religion and his
>sketch of descendents.
>
>The two sons of George 2. were of different religions by the time of the
>1798 uprisings, each serving with an opposing faction, each being captured
>or briefly interned. [On my first trip to Ireland this summer I was told by
>John Bourke of Galway that it was extremely common for families to have a
>member choose a different religion in order to survive, and that not to
>think ill of the same in the first instance].
>
>It appears that the family then ultimately removed to Galway, where the
>protestant George became the printer of a newpaper in Galway[ referred to
>by
>Sean as a "Royalist" rag]. At his death in 1837 his son Thomas publish an
>obituary which Sean excerpted:
>
>He was the OWNER of the GALWAY WEEKLY ADVERTISER and died at his house at
>CROSS STREET at 4 o'clock pm on Tuesday. He was born in Dublin 1767 ( but
>this is contradicted by his burial record). He adopted the trade of
>Bookbinder and it states without proof that he "was resolved to live
>independently of his parents who were of an ANCIENT and RESPECTABLE
>family".
>It appears he worked his away around the main towns and cities of Europe
>and
>settled 45 years ago at Galway town. "His hostility to the Church of Rome
>was unbending". At the outbreak of the 1798 rebellion while he was in
>GALWAY
>he joined the Yeomanry under General Le Poer Trench and " left his
>booksellers shop to encounter the horrors of war". He was taken prisoner by
>the French who then marched on Castlebar with prisoners and he was later
>liberated by General Humbert. He suffered a paralytic stroke in 1834. His
>eldest son was given as Thomas. In the same newspaper Vol.xx.No.28 13th
>July
>1839 THOMAS CONOLLY announces in an advert. that he is now the proprieter
>of
>the newspaper and asks that all outstanding bills be paid.He also
>advertises
>for an apprentice "who shall be treated like one of the family".
>
>Sean also notes: GEORGE CONOLLY of CROSS street is named in the burial
>records of St.Nicholas Church of Ireland GALWAY town (P. 519 RCBL) and was
>interred 20th June 1839 aged 65 years. This means he was born c.1774 which
>would mean he was born 1773-1775 around the same time as CALEB CONOLLY b.c.
>1774.
>
>The Caleb Conolly--Catholic side of the family can be traced in Dublin
>through a series of recorded instruments (seven in total copied by Sean and
>the copies are now in the possession of my father). In 1814 Caleb Conolly
>was addressed in the preface of one insturment of conveyance in Dublin as
>Caleb "Connolly", but he signed the same as Caleb Conolly. Sean repeated to
>me that the Irish were notoriously casual about their spelling of the
>surname and that one can be seriously mislead if not willing to accept that
>the surname spelling is changed from time to time.
>
>In another instrument Caleb's move to Galway is confirmed: Dated 10th Feb.
>1819
>OWEN to JACKSON.CALEB CONOLLY (1) of GALWAY named as a bookseller and
>also
>of Camden street, DUBLIN CITY. Referred to thus in regard to premises in
>Camden street :
>
>"and are generally tenanted by said CALEB CONOLLY, BARRETT FERRIS and
>CHARLES JAS. McDONNELL".CALEB (1) is just mentioned in passing in this
>memorial but it does prove that CALEB CONOLLY (1) of Camden street,
>DUBLIN
>ended up in GALWAY town sometime 1816-1819. His son THOMAS ZACHARIAH
>CONOLLY
>(3) may have been born in GALWAY area in 1811 but the RC register of Galway
>town only starts in c.1814. Thomas is not found in the Church of Ireland
>St.Nicholas register Galway.
>
>In yet another instrument the connection to our family is made:
>
>6.
>738/510/503245
>Dated : 22nd March 1819.
>
>This involves GEORGE CONOLLY (3) of the town of GALWAY, a stationer, and
>refers to a memorial of 1802 involving Patrick Darcy and George Conolly
>(land just outside Galway town). This memorial also involved a JOHN GALWAY
>of Summerhill in DUBLIN CITY.
>
>This GEORGE CONOLLY (3) is no doubt the brother of CALEB CONOLLY (1) who
>probably ended up in GALWAY town to assist him during the 1816-1819 period.
>This GEORGE CONOLLY has a WILL extract recorded in National Archives of
>Ireland, Bishop street, Dublin, Grant of Probates Folia 166A. He died the
>18th June 1839 and the WILL was registered 7th August 1839.
>
>He is named as a BOOKBINDER and BOOKSELLER in this WILL extract and his
>natural and lawful son is named as THOMAS CONOLLY (2). This THOMAS CONOLLY
>(2) would be a cousin I presume of THOMAS ZACHARIAH CONOLLY (3) who was
>son
>of CALEB CONOLLY (1). This WILL extract cannot be photocopied because its
>part of a large volume of WILL extracts and not yet on film or fiche. He
>left £1,384 sterling which was a lot of money in 1839. This GEORGE CONOLLY
>(3) is named in PIGOTS DIRECTORY of 1820 as been a bookseller and a printer
>at HIGH STREET, GALWAY TOWN.
>
>Strangely in the Roman catholic register of Sligo town pos. 4603 we see
>that
>when Thomas CONOLLY married Mary McGowan 12th Feb. 1861 he gave an address
>of HIGH STREET and his parents address was given as 12 Capel street. There
>is a High street in Dublin and Galway but Capel street is definitely in
>Dublin city.
>
>Your research may be able to discern from which family Thomas, who married
>in Sligo, is from.
>
>Finally, in his last bit of research, Sean provided the following which
>suggests that George (1) could be the son of John Counly likely born prior
>to 1686:
>
>SAINT NICHOLAS WITHOUT
>Dublin city
>Church of Ireland
>Printed 1912.
>Dates:1694 to 1739.
>
>The "parish clerks idea of spelling of names was often strange" so says the
>preface to this printed volume. For example they spelt CALEB as KEAYLUP and
>GEORGE as JORGE and other variants. O'Neill was spelt as Neale, Nale, Neal,
>Neil, Oneal and O'Neale. So it could be that the name COUNLY is a
>misspelling of the name CONOLLY but it hard to know. He has Connelly and
>Connily for Conolly as well. Since I cannot be certain all I can do is give
>the following and suggest that they may be of your family if they are
>indeed
>CONOLLYS. It seems the baptisms in this register would be mostly
>established
>church but the burials are a mixture of everybody.
>
>There seems to be three brothers called WILLIAM, JOHN and GEORGE COUNLY.
>
>JON (John) COUNLY (Conolly or Cownley ?) married 29th July 1707 to ANN
>BOYDON
>I presume JOHN COUNLY was born pre. 1686.
>Three known children :
>1.
>GEORGE bapt, 1st May 1712
>Lived at PATRICK STREET
>
>[Is this our George?]
>
>
>
>
>I would very much like to have your reaction to Sean's information. What a
>project it would be to try to take this back beyond George Caleb and Jon
>Counly if they are ours.

I have quite a bit of information regarding 3 generations of George Conolly's from Dublin starting in mid 1700's -- they were shoemakers and bookbinders -- later moving to Galway and then returning to Dublin. They resided in Cutpurse Row. Thomas the emigrant came to the US in 1871 and his decendents settled in Rochester NY as printers.

I would be grateful for any information on the ancestry or descendants of Robert William Conolly, son of John Conolly, who married Ellen in the 1860s, and then, after her death married Anna Murphy in 1884. All three were born in Ireland (probably Dublin) but their married lives were lived in London. Ellen gave birth to a son Francis (Frank) abt 1869 in Middlesex. Anna bore 4 children: Mary Ellen (Nelly) abt 1886; Evangeline Margaret (Eva) abt 1888; Gertrude (abt 1889) and Robert (abt 1889).

I shall of course be happy to share the information that I have on this family.

Peter Clarke

Hi Rhonda,

I'm on the Conolly hunt too, I noticed you lived in Kill Devil Hills, I live in Poquoson VA not too far away.

Have you checked out the Castleton Conolly's? I'm trying to connect my George Conolly to that family. My grandfather inherited an irish Castle about 1930 and there was also an aunt who was a lady-in-waiting to the queen of england. Ring any bells? With a name like Louisa your Conolly seems like a likely family member. I'm looking for the father of George Conolly b. 1814 Dublin Ireland he is also George Conolly married to Margrite Cook Conolly. Let me know if we have any matches.

Jenny Maguire

Hi,

I am looking for the family of George Conolly married to Margrite Cook Conolly, they had at least one child George b. 1814 Dublin Ireland. I am trying to find out which Conolly family in Ireland we are related to. In about 1930 my grandfather inherited an Irish castle, he could not accept it and the name has been lost to history. My Uncle Gene Conolly remembers some sort of an aunt who was a lady-in-waiting to the Queen of England. My great grandfather was William Conolly, the family lived (to my knowledge) in Cadiz, Ohio and Hartford MI.

If you have any avenues to travel down to look for this family I would appreciate knowing them. I have just about exhausted the internet. Thanks for any help!

Most sincerely,
Jenny Maguire

Hi,

I'm on the Conolly hunt too. My 3 times great grandfather was George Conolly. He immigrated here in 1832, possibly with other family members. The census lists him as a painter. As far as we know he was most likely a protestant and was born in Dublin in 1814 to George and Margrite Cook Conolly. My grandfather inherited a castle in about 1930 (nobody remembers the name) so it is possible they might have been a land holding family.

If this jives with any of your information could you let me know? Thanks so very much.

Kindest regards,
Jenny Maguire

Hi Peggy,

I haven't touched this genealogy stuff since last winter so I'm kind of rusty.

I am looking for relations for George Conolly (definitely spelled with one "N") This George was born approx. 1814-1820 possibly in Dublin Ireland. He immigrated to the US about 1832. Married someone named "Mary" (no maiden name)and had six children.

If I told you earlier his parents were George and Margrite Conolly, I now know this not to be true. It was a reference in a family bible to George himself.

I think George may have immigrated with other family members from Ireland but have no idea whom they might be.

My grandfather inherited an Irish castle about 1930 so we think it possible that the family may possibly have been landed Irish gentry but certainly don't know that for sure. All info on the castle has been lost to time. George was listed in a MI census in 1870 as a painter, one older cousin thinks he may have been a church steeple painter in Ireland.

I have just acquired a xerox copy of a picture of George. I would be happy to send you a copy of this but don't know how to do it over the internet, could I snail mail it to you?

Thank you so much for responding.

Jenny Maguire

Hi I am desperately searching to find information on the family of William & Annie (England) Connolly, London England in late 1890's.
They had 6 children that I know of: William born 1890,
Archibald born 1893, Elizabeth born 1895, Charles born 1897 and the twins born in 1900 John and Ethel.
I know that William Sr worked in the military and was injured and came home and died from infection. His wife Annie could not support all the children and gave I believe all the boys to the Barnardo Home. William I know was sent to Canada in 1904. I am searching for any of his siblings or information on his parents.

Hi Kelly
I have just posted my search onto the message board. I don't think our families are connected, but you did ask for any Conolly history, and as you know it is the more unusual spelling.

My aunt has traced our Conolly roots back to before 1700, originally from John Conolly of Portarlington, his son was John Conolly of the 18th Hussars, his son Thomas Conolly who was in the 1851 Census living in Barracks with his son Thomas William John Conolly who has written a book which you can search for on the web called "History of the Royal Sappers and Miners" he was born in 1815, then his son Thomas William Collins Connolly who added an 'n' for a short time, then his son Leopold Maurice Stanley Napier Conolly who was born in 1875 who was my great grandfather. Happy hunting!!!!!!!!

I am interested in corresponding with anyone from Margaret Connolly’s family, to learn about Joseph Hughes’ wife’s family. Margaret Connelly, born c1845, daughter of John Connelly and Margaret Murray, married Joseph Hughes in Stockport, England, on July 2, 1865. In 1865, Margaret’s father, who had been a hawker, was deceased. Joseph and Margaret left England and settled in Fall River, Massachusetts, where they raised their family. Joseph died young, and Margaret married Henry Donahue in Fall River in 1898. He died a year later. I have not been able to find a death record for Margaret. The spelling Conolly was on her civil marriage record, but her name has also been spelled as Connolly and as Connelly.

Conolly of Co. Kildare

Turtle Bunbury’s debut book, “The Landed Gentry & Aristocracy of Kildare”, offers a unique and lively historical insight into eighteen of Co. Kildare’s most influential “big house” families. The book features fifty illustrations and covers more than a thousand years of Irish history. The families profiled are those of Aylmer, Barton, de Burgh, Clements, Conolly, Guinness, Henry, Fennell, FitzGerald, Latten, La Touche, Mansfield, Maunsell, Medlicott, More O’Ferrall, Moore, de Robeck, and Wolfe. The story of these often eccentric dynasties is set against the backdrop of the past – the violent religious wars of the 17th century, the rise of the British Empire in the 18th and the run up to Irish independence in 1921.

Please contact me on turtski@iolfree.ie if you are interested in a copy of this book.

Read of
· the Celbridge connection to the Salem Witch Trials
· French Tom Barton and the vineyards of France
· the remarkable terrier who journeyed from Forenaghts to Bristol
· the Admiral from Naas who led the Dardanelles campaign
· the medieval ape who saved the Earl of Kildare’s life
· the assassination of Lord Killwarden
· the bizarre death of Viscount Drogheda
· the Kildare man who attempted to win the US Civil War single handed
· the rise of the Irish Quakers
· the ill-fated rebellion of Silken Thomas
· the innkeepers son who became the richest man in Ireland
· the Moyvalley man who gave Malta its first taste of independence
· the gentleman who served with the IRA

Re: CONOLLY, THOMAS (CONNOLLY, CONNELLY) Buried in Bradford, MA 3/1/1873

Jenny...I noticed your E-mail to Peggy Karol on the internet today. I am the cousin Peg refers to in her E-mail to you. Peg and I have traded information on our branches of the family.
As is usually the case in Irish genealogy, a key issue is the religion of the family in the 1700's and early 1800's. Our earliest known ancestor, George Conolly, was born in 1748 in Castletown, Celbridge, KIldare (about 12 miles out of Dublin) and was buried in Dublin's St. Stephen's Churchyard, a Protestant cemetery. His son was probably also Protestant, as well as his grandson, who appears to have later become Catholic. This grandson, Thomas Zachariah Conolly, was born in Dublin in 1811, and was buried in the Catholic section of Phillips Park Cemetery in Manchester, England (colloquially known as Bradford Cemetery).
The birth of your George Conolly fits nicely with the birth of our Thomas, although this means very little. I would say that if your George was Protestant there is a chance that we are related. However, if he was Catholic I would seriously doubt it...the disadvantages of becoming a Catholic in 1811 were too great.
If you are interested in following the matter further, please send me your snail mail address at JFC660@frontiernet.net.
Jim Conolly

Hi Jenny,

I have just seen your response to my query regarding
Connolly/Connelly.

I think we may be talking about the same line. I don't have much "independant" research from George Connolly to Thomas Zachariah. I posted a query a couple of years ago trying to find the actual burial place for Thomas. Jim F. Connolly responded to me and we were able to confirm that we had a common ancestor in Thomas. My line is through his son, James Dominic and Jim's line is through another of Thomas' sons.

If you think we have a match I would be very happy to work with you on this line. I can provide you with a great deal of informaiton on James Dominic's descendants. I also have pictures of James and his wife Theresa.

I look forward to hearing from you. I am sorry it took me so long to notice yor response!
Peggy Karol

According to his obituary, John HOGG (1825-1888) and his wife Helen SUTHERLAND (1826-1888) had five children, including a "Mrs CONOLLY." In my search for this elusive relative, I would appreciate any information, leads, or advice. Alec Sutherland

Patrick Conoly?

I have a Patrick Conoly about 50 years old in the 1860 census in Elizaville District of Fleming County KY. He is shown next to the Hefflin/Heffernan family. He is listed as born in Ireland (abt. 1810 according to his age) and working as farm labor. I can't tell if he is in a household or a part of the Hefflin family household. No other Conoly family is shown near there.
Does this connect to anyone? Any ideas who he is?
The 1870 and on census record show the name changing to Connelly and Conley in Fleming County KY. I am trying to find a connection........
Sorry folks, I'm going to hang a whole new family of Conolly into this most interesting "Family Tree" I am doing this on my wife's side, her father was Dennis, one of twins, her grandfather was Thomas Berrisford Parker Mills Conolly (Captain Indian Army Ordnance Corps) died in action on the 31st Dec 1941 aged 49 (1892) his wife was Elizabeth Emily Conolly, he was the son of Thomas Conolly, sorry I can't tell you more, the only other snippit of info on T B P M, is that he was an advisor to Chang Hi Chek not sure of the spelling, and fled to Formosa when the Japs arrived on his doorstep, if anyone knows anything of this set of Conolly's, deeply interested.
CONOLLY, THOMAS (CONNOLLY, CONNELLY) Buried in Bradford, MA 3/1/1873

I am looking for information about Thomas Conolly, who was my 3rd great grandfather. I think he was born abt. 1811 in Ireland. I don't know the name of his wife and can't find any record of her in America. Thomas died March 1, 1873 in Bradford, MA. I have a copy of his burial certificate which says he was buried in Bradford Cemetery, Bradford, MA. I don't think that cemetery exists now or at least I can't find it. His son, James Dominic Connolly, was born in Ireland abt 1842. He died in 1879 in Lincoln, Lancaster, NE. He was buried March 6, 1879 in Calgary Cemetery in Lincoln, Lancaster, NE. He married Teresa Hanlon in Ireland , on Jan. 25, 1864. She was born in 1845 in Ireland; died 8/3/1910 Lincoln, Lancaster, NE. and is buried in Calgary Cemetery, Lincoln, Lancaster, NE. One of their children was my grandfather, Thomas Edward Connelly, who was b. March 8, 1868 in either Liverpool England or Dublin, Ireland.

James and his family came to America abt 1870 or 1871. I don't know if Thomas Conolly, James' father, was already here or if he came with James and his family. I know James and Teresa had a least two other children, Peter and Annie, who also came with them to America.

The "family story" is that the name spelling changes were due to various clerks filling out the forms incorrectly. But my Grandfather, Thomas Edward, settled on "CONNELLY" because on his citizenship papers (citizenship granted March 15, 1892 in Lincoln, Lancaster, NE) he used the spelling "CONNELLY".

I have quite a bit of information on my grandfather, Thomas Edward, and his descendants. I would appreciate any information on his father, James Dominic Connolly, and grandfather, Thomas Conolly. I would be very willing to share the information I have with anyone researching this same family. Thanks in advance for any help.
Peggy Karol
