I'm curious how you linked the PEI James Conquest to the Conquests in the 1841 census in St Bees, Cumberland, England. Have you gone any further back with ancesters for the family?

I visited Houghton Conquest in 2005. When I read this posting, I could not recall the banner, so I had a look throught my photos.

What a shame to miss the banners and not get better photos. Attached is a photo of the church. The banners can be seen hanging in the Santuary. I have loaded a high-res version of the photo so that you can zoom in. The banner described seems to be the middle one on the right.

Ralph
Brisbane, Australia

Hi Allen,
I've looked at the Conquest family tree - very interesting! I'm decscended from William Conquest, 1841 to 1908. He was married to Louisa Crowsley,(I see the tree gives her name as Louisa King) my great grandmother, and her daughter Louise Maude Mary Conquest, born 1872, died 1938 was my grandmother.
I don't have much information about Josiah junior, only
that he sailed to America with his parents.
Regards, Ann

Re: Calling all Conquests

Here is an excerpt from a message posted by Kevin Conquest, the fund raising organiser:

The Church of All Saints in Houghton Conquest, Bedfordshire, contacted me about the failing condition of an embroidered banner that has been on display there for over four hundred years. This banner was commissioned upon the death of Sir Richard Conquest, a knight, in 1607. As you may know, Houghton Conquest is the ancestral home of our family name, with earliest documentation placing us there in 1219.

The banner is made from embellished silk and features quartered silver and black with a red label of three points, the arms descended through the Conquest family since 1306. Surmounting our arms on the banner is a sword and wreath. Within the wreath is a parting message –

Bonum certamen certavi (I have fought the good fight)

Cursum consummavi (I have finished the race)

Fidem servavi (I have kept the faith)

In reliquo repositum est mihi (From now on there is reserved for me)

Corona iustitiae (The Crown of Righteousness)

A decade later, on January 19, 1618, Lewis Conquest, a younger son of Sir Richard was fined ten pounds by the College of Arms in London for not seeking permission from the College before placing this banner of arms in the church.[1] Ten pounds today seems trivial but in that era, it would have set someone up well for years!

The banner needs professional restoration and preservation. Roger White, one of the churchwardens, wrote me recently with the following:

“After hundreds of years you can imagine that it requires a great deal of skilled work to restore it to its former beauty. All of the light coloured silk background needs replacing, but in order to do that the applique has to be removed. The sword shaft and handle needs recovering. The red bar across the top needs to be completely replaced as well. The family motto too needs to be removed and replaced onto a new damask/silk background. The best estimate we have is £1800 ( approx $ 2900) give or take a bit. To that will need to be added a sum for a glass fronted wooden cabinet to house the banner in an upright position protecting it from dust and insects. "

I'm happy to add anyone who has information to add to the Conquest family tree. We also have a group on Facebook for all Conquest relatives around the world here: http://www.facebook.com/groups/conquestfamily.

We are also raising funds to renovate some historical banners in Houghton-Conquest, England.
Thank you for your reply.
Do you still have CONQUESTS living in Lancashire? Would any of them be willing to share their CONQUEST genealogy? This may be a good time for you to also learn about your CONQUEST line.
I know some of my CONQUESTS were from Manchester and Salford. Joseph CONQUEST was born in Salford 8 December 1828. He died 29 June 1908 in Gloucester. He worked for the railway and became wealthy. Never married. His parents names were William and Elizabeth. William was a hatter.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.

My CONQUEST family lived in London, Manchester, Whitehaven, and Gloucester. They moved around a great deal because they were in the Hat business. This was during the 1800s. The parents are William & Elizabeth (MUNRO) CONQUEST., married in 1814.
Their children are: James (my 2nd gg), Elizabeth, William, John, Richard, Hugh, and Joseph.
James immigrated to Prince Edward Island.
John married Dinah DOULEY, and they had a son William.
Joseph worked for the railway and became wealthy.
I have done a lot of research on this family. I even have photos. If anyone can assist me with any information, leave a post.
Thank you,
--Susan
Hi, I understand where you are coming from, I found the
infromation on familysearch.org When I found it I
also was concerned if this infromation was right.

Morning Conquest b. 1780 and d. 1830 in FAYETTE kY
HE married Milley Aldridge in 1821 also in Kentucky.
they had 2 sons; William Ashley Conquest b. 1825 in
Lexington Ky. d. Jan 1, 1880 in Greenwood, Jackson Mo
and the other son is Richard Conquest b 1822 in
Fayette Ky. William married, Mary Isabelle Church
they had 9 children, one of which is my g-grandmother

Richard married a women named Rebecca in 1843 in
Indiana, she was born in Tennessee. They had four
children.

All this infromation came from family search, I have
been trying to find more infromation on Morning
Conquest, with no luck yet. I would be happy to work wit
you on this maybe between the two of us we can
come up with more infromation on him. I would like
to know if he was born in the US or in England
I would love to share all of my infromation on the
Conquest family, and hope that you would be willing
to share your infromation on them.

Looking forward to hearing from you again

Frances

Thank you very much Frances for the information on Richard...I've found it quite challenging to get information on the Conquests before the 1800's and with your info I might be able to continue my quest :) So thanks again...I'm not doubting you but just curious where you received your information on Richard's parent being Morning Conquest? This certainly is a great breakthrough :) Thanks again!

-Michael

Hi Kevin, I'm not really sure at this point that your
Conquest and my Conquest are related. My Conquest
lived in Kentucky and Illinois, . How ever Richard
Conquest married Rebecca ? in Indiana, Rebecca was
born in Tennessee. The only James Riley Conquest b. 1844
Indiana died 1915 Kansas. James parents are Richard &
Rebecca. They had 4 children.

I do not know when our Conquest came across from
England, would love to see what you have enregards
Conquest in England.

Frances

Re: Origins of the Conquest Family (and my visit to Houghton Conquest)

Hi all,

Here is an update to this thread. I have found documentation of the variation on the Conquest arms mentioned in Ralph's document. The book "The General armory of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales" by Bernard Burke lists the following arms, all for members in our Conquest family:

Quarterly argent and sable, a label gules. Crest of a holly tree on argent and sable wreath, fructed gules. <-- known to be in use by Sir John Conquest

Quarterly sable and argent, a label of three points counterchanged <-- note the reversing of the quarters

Quarterly argent and sable, a bend gules <-- seen used heavily in Houghton Conquest

The book can be read here: http://books.google.com/books?id=WmpmAAAAMAAJ&printsec=f...

I visited Houghton Conquest this August, spending the night at the Knife & Cleaver and visiting the All Saints Church for at least an hour, taking photos and documenting what I found. The first arms mentioned above are hanging on banners in the church. Four members of the Conquest family were rectors of the parish and that can be seen in the church and in pamphlets they make available.

Variations of the arms (with and without the label) can be seen on a plaque in the garden at the Knife & Cleaver. The main room in the pub has a handwritten history of the Conquest family.

The two brasses at All Saints (one of John Conquest, wife Isabel Gamage, and son Richard) and the other featuring the same Richard with wife Elizabeth Jellybronde do show them in prayer position.

I tend to believe that the document in Ralph's possession was written by either John Thimelby Conquest who was Mary Christina Markham's (nee Conquest) brother (both children of Benedict) or Benedict's brother, also named John Thimelby Conquest. All we need to determine to find out is who the arms with the bend was granted to.

As for William I bestowing the fief on his natural child Gaultier de Conquest before 1100, there really isn't anything out there that proves this. It should be noted that Houghton Conquest came from a section of land granted in the Domesday Book to Countess Judith, a niece to William I (the Conqueror). This could be a clue and direction to look into?

Fun stuff!

Kevin

I have posted on here before but had no luck in finding any information, so I decided to try again.
My Great Great Grandfather was James Conquest born about 1841,he married Martha don't know her surname. They had a son Charles born about 1871. He married Rosannah Hadley. They were my Great grandparents. They all came from London. They had a daughter called Rosina born 1896 she married Ernest Stratford. They were my grandparents. I would love to hear from anyone that has any information about any of my relations as I have not been able to find any connection to any of the other Conquest's that have posted.
George Conquest and Amy West

George Conquest (b.1790s) and Amy West (d. 1830s) are my great-great grandparents.

In addition to my great grandfather, William Henry Augustus CONQUEST, they also had a daughter Amy Augusta CONQUEST (b. 1828), who later married George FREEMAN.

I was looking at records for Amy, as I have a brand new granddaughter, who has been named Aimee (French spelling of Amy) Hana AUGUSTIN. What a coincidence?!

In looking at the records, I discovered that there are several Public Family Trees on Ancestry.com who include George and Amy. As my information about them and their ancestors is incomplete, I would like to contact anyone who has more information. The trees that I have identified on Ancestry.com are:

matty and nikkis family history
Lambert Public Member Tree
Oxley/Paulson Family Tree
Mitchell family tree
Cattell family tree

As I don't have a current Ancestry.com subscription, I can't see these family trees. I would like to get in touch.
Robyn,

I appreciate that your post is over 8 years old but I have not used the message boards before. Mary Drewitt was my Grandfathers sister. My Aunt Delice who now lives near to Brisbane told me that she recalls Mary and Alfred (Conquest) emigrating to NZ along with 2 boys and 2 girls, although her memory may be a little vague on the exact number of children. My tree is open to view if you would care to take a look. If you can provide me with dates and names of winnifred and Joan and of course their families in NZ I will be more than happy to add them to my tree, photographs and any documentation would be a real bonus. Do you have a site on Ancestry that I can look at or will you have to invite me to view it? If you would like to email direct, my address is markdrewitt@fsmail.net. I have added a lot of information to my tree regarding the Conquest and Drewitt family and hope that you enjoy looking at it.

Regards
Mark Drewitt

Re: Origins of the Conquest Family

It's important to remember that granting of arms went to individuals, not a family. Most often an heir would acquire their own arms based off their father and/or mother's but modified.

If you do a search through Google books of Houghton Conquest, you will see several mentionings of arms for Conquest -- some also depicted in the brasses at All Saints in Houghton Conquest. For example, the brass of John, Richard and Isabel Conquest depicted Richard's arms inheriting the quarterly sections but "impaling 1 and 4, three lozenges bendwise and in chief three scallops; 2 and 3, checky a fesse for his wife, who was a Malet".

http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=42433

You can see a rubbing of the brass and depiction of the arms here! http://books.google.com/books?id=cnHW7TjQ8b4C&pg=PA102&a...

The arms that are most prevalently mentioned about the Conquest family is the one you describe David -- quarterly argent and sable, a label of three points gules. The label suggests birth order.

So in all fairness, the arms for the J. Conquest mentioned in the notes do seem feasible but I personally have not found an official record of it yet.

Mary Christina Conquest was the daughter of Mary Markham and Benedict Conquest, grandson of John Thimelby Conquest. Benedict had three sons, one of which also named John Thimelby Conquest. This could be the J. Conquest mentioned in this note as he would be the sister of Lady Arundell (Mary Christina) and would give credit to the branches of the family mentioned in the note.

http://books.google.com/books?id=B7FJAAAAMAAJ&pg=RA3-PA2...

It's also good to point out that Benedict sold the lands of Houghton Conquest to Earl Ossery before he died, ending the tenure of the family in Houghton Conquest.

I hope this isn't overkill!! It's simply that I've spent a few years since Ralph's posting digging through books and resources looking for weight on this topic.

In all, there is at least 50% of the note Ralph found that has historical backing.

Thanks all,
Kevin Michael Conquest MacHeffner

Another entry in the book is "To Harriet Jones in rememberance of Mr. Clarkson January 1st 1879, Harrow".
I believe my maternal Grandmother was related to the Conquest family through her mother who married a Mr. Price.
Is there any one who can shed some light on this connection?

Wife of William Henry Augustus CONQUEST, Australia

I am interested in tracing a Mary Ann FUSSELL, second wife of William Henry Augustus CONQUEST. Some of this information is not confirmed.

Mary Ann was born around 1834 in NSW, Australia (Regn V1834612 18/1834) to Henry and Mary FUSSELL.

In 1852, she married James BURGESS in Sydney (Regn V1852131 85/1852). James died in Paterson, just north of Newcastle, NSW 1869.

Using the name Mary Ann BURGESS (widow), she married my Great Grandfather, William Henry Augustus CONQUEST (widower) on 6 February 1871 in Braidwood, NSW. They had one child, Emma, born in about 1872

I can find no further records of Mary Ann or her daughter Emma.

On 2 December 1872, William Henry Augustus CONQUEST married again, this time to Eliza MARTIN (my Great Grandmother), but this time, declaring himself as a bachelor!

What happenned to Mary Ann FUSSELL / BURGESS / CONQUEST and her daughter Emma CONQUEST? There are no death records that match in NSW.

Ralph
I can't take him back any further, but I believe he was in Daviess Co IN in the 1850 census. He and Rebecca were members of the Indian Creek Baptist Church in Lawrence Co IN in the 1840's.

Karen

Re: Origins of the Conquest Family

William 1st had nine children, none of which were named "Gaultier". William II never married or had children so I doubt this document is genuine.

I have seen weak reference to a "Gaultier de Conquest" somewhere once but can't seem to place it now.

The reference to the coat of arms also appears to be incorrect. The coat of Arms is actually a checkered shield (two white and two black checks) with a simple symbol of a battlement in the top right hand check.)

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM I
Robert Curthose (1054–1134), Duke of Normandy, married Sybil of Conversano, daughter of Geoffrey of Conversano.
Richard (c. 1055 – c. 1081), Duke of Bernay, killed by a stag in New Forest.
Adeliza (or Alice) (c. 1055 – c. 1065), reportedly betrothed to Harold II of England.
Cecilia (or Cecily) (c. 1056 – 1126), Abbess of Holy Trinity, Caen.
William "Rufus" (c. 1056 – 1100), King of England.
Agatha (c. 1064 – 1079), betrothed to Alfonso VI of Castile.
Constance (c. 1066 – 1090), married Alan IV Fergent, Duke of Brittany; poisoned, possibly by her own servants.
Adela (c. 1067 – 1137), married Stephen, Count of Blois.
Henry "Beauclerc" (1068–1135), King of England, married Edith of Scotland, daughter of Malcolm III, King of the Scots. His second wife was Adeliza of Louvain.

David Conquest
My husband's gt.gt.gt grandmother was an Ann Conquest - on the record we have it states "Ann Arthur (nee Conquest)" which in itself is strange! She married Simon Peake in abt 1825.
Area of Horsefair, Wisbech. Their children were all called "Arthur" as far as we can trace.
