It was put together by A Winifred Constable i think back in the 80s but not sure. It has a lot of photos with names so should be of interest to the right part of the family if I can locate them. It is for sale at £150 including postage and would be happy to suply further information . Regards Leslie George.

Hi Anne, I am in the Hills district in Sydney, Australia. I would love any info that you could provide re the connection with John Constable (the painter). I had heard the same story, but had not been able to locate this connection anywhere, even when I visited the Moruya Historical Society several years ago. Where are you located? Thanks and regards, Lyle

Dear Lyle,
I too am a descendant of John Oldfield Constable , I believe throught their eldest son John (if memory serves me). I went to a couple of Constable family reunions in the late 80' early 90's the second one was held in Moruya. Unfortunately, I don't have teh contact details of teh person who compiled the family history but I do remember that the had made a link with John Constable the painter. I will contact my Uncle who may have more details and pass them on to you if I have any luck. Where are you located?

Cheers,
Anne

This is a bit of a long shot but I would be interested to hear from anyone (in America?) who may be descended from James Constable who was born in 1770 in Cupar, Fife, Scotland. He was the son of John Constable a Burgess in Cupar and his wife Ann/Anne Thomson.

I have an old handwritten family tree which has the note "went to America left family" beside his name. I am hoping this means he married and had children in America.

Regards
ianehume

Ulster Co., NY Constable family mid 1800 +

In 1900, a Constable family is listed in Marbletown. in 1910 the same family is listed in Kingston. The father's name in 1910 is not legible, the mother was Emily who remarried a Snedeker in 1909 in Olive. Her children were: Annie E who married Farrel O'Day in 1914 and remarried William Poucher in 1921; William who married Anne; Martha who married Richard W Bruck in 1907; Maude who married Robert Rice in 1914; Estelle who married Jamaes Ryan in 1913, Ella who married Fred Fischang in 1912; Blanche who married Bernard Schultz in 1930, Beulah who married Isaac Trowbridge in 1919 as well as Asa and Ralph. There is no census record found for Martha Constable Bruck after the 1900 census. Hoping someone in the extended Constable family would know what became of her. According to her son John's death record, she was still living in 1967 in NYC.

Constable origins

"The Battle Abbey Roll"
pgs. 245-247
CONESTABLE: a title of office, borne by several different families, of whom two, at least, ranked among the most ancient and honourable of Yorkshire. The Constable of Flamborough and their branches derived from the Barons of alton, Constables of Chester, who, in right of this office. were Premier Barons in Hugh Lupus' Palatine Earldom. "William Constabular" witnesses his charter to St. Werburgh's Abbey; but, according to Wotton, the surname of Constable was first assumed nearly two hundred years afterwards, by the posterity of Robert de Lacy, the second son of a Baron of Halton who died in 1190, and fromwhom he received a grant of Flamborough. It cannot therefore be this family (now represented in the female line by Lord erries) that is here designated. They bore Quarterly Gules and Vert, over all a bend Or. The Constables that gave their name to Burton-Constable and were created Viscounts of Dunbar by James I, have a more hazy genealogy. They claim desent from "lbert, son of the 'Constable' who fought on the Conqueror's side at Hastings," and a Saxon heiress neamed Erneburg; but of this "Constable" no mention is made by Wace in his account of the battle, nor can he be found entered in Domesday. The author of 'The Norman People' conjectures them to have been a junior branch of the house of De Gand or De Alost, deriving their name from an ancestor who was Constable of De Gand's great barony of Folkingham. He shows that the arms of these Constables were the same as those of the De Gands (Barry of 6, Or and Azure, a ben Gules) minus the bend. But this coat was in reality that of Fulk d'Oyry, a great Lincolnshire baron, assumed from his co-heiress late in the thirteenth century, before which date the Constables bore Or, a fesse componee Argent and Azure, in chief a lion passant Gules.v.Poulson's Holderness.
It is however, clear, from the same authority, that there was a close connection between the families; for Poulson asserts that Erneburga, the great Saxon heiress who gave hew name to Ernebrg-Burton in olderness, was twice marries, first to Gilbert de Alost, and secondly to Ulbert le Constable. Burton passed to the descendents of Ulbert, "the name of Erenburg-Burton gradually yielding to that of Burton-Constable, and was held for many centuries as well in part of the Seigniory of Holderness, as of the Archbishop of York." Yet she must have ahd children by her first husband, for several De Alosts, holding a share in the property, are mentioned in Yorkshire during the thirteenth century.
Robert le Constable, the eldest son of Ulbert and Erneburga, lived in the reigns of King Stephen and Henry II, and was styled De Halsham. is son perished on Coeur de Lion's crusade; and his grandson, who married a kinswoman, Julian de Alost, was the father of another Robert, the husband of Adela [or Ela] de Oyry. She was on of three sisters, of whom Emma de Gousell became Lady of Gedney; but must herself have been a considerable heiress, for her grandson Sir Simon adopted her arms in lieu of his paternal bearing. Part of her possessions were, it would seem, included in the present park of Burton Constable; for the solitary instance of a charter of free warren in Holderness before the time of Edward I [Edward I first diswarrened Holderness, and granted license to his knights and tenants to kill game, enclose their woods, and make parks] was granted to Fulco d'Oyry by Hawise, Countess of Albermarle and Lady of the Seigniory. The Constables were of high rank in Yorkshire, and intermarried with the first houses in the North of England; among thair alliances were to be found co-heiresses of Lascelles, Umfraville, Eure, and Nevill; and they still "flourished in great splendour" in Camden's time. Sir enry Constable, "a man of parts and learning," was in favour with James I, and received from him in 1620 a SCottish peerage as Viscount of Dunbar. It was successively held by his sons and two of his grandsons; but of these latter there was only a single descent, Mary, the daughter of the third Viscount, who married Simon Scrope of Danby, but left no children. The last of them, William, succeeded to the title in 1714, not long before his death; and with him was extinguished the male line of the great old house of Burton Constable. The estates devolved by special entail on the second son of his sister Cecily, Cuthbert Tunstall, who duly assumed the name and bearing of the family. But within less than half a dozen generations they had twice again passed to female heirs; first to the Sheldons, and then to the Cliffords, who now bear the name and fill the place of the Constables. The house - a very fine one - principally dates from the Tudor period; but one part is said to have been built in King Stephen's time, and is called Stephen's Tower.
Poulson enumerates three younger branches; the Constables of St. Sepulchre's Garth; the Constables of Kilnsea, Bentley, and Essington; and the Constables of Kirby Knoll and Upsall. The Constables of Freshmarsh and Catfoss in the same county were not of the same family, but derived from Roaldus, Constable of Richmond. Melton-Constable in orfolk was the residence of a third and entirely distinct family, derived from "Anchitel, whose descendents were sometimes styled De Melton, and sometimes De Constable, from the office or place they held under the Bishop of Norwich, by whom they had been enfeoffied of it." This was in the time of Bishop William de Beaufoe, under whom Anchitel held Melton jointly with Roger de Lions. The last heir of this house, Sir Robert Constable, died in the fourteenth century, and his sister and heiress, Editha, conveyed Malton Constble to the Astleys. One of her descendents, Sir Jacob Astley, "was summoned by writ to the House of Lords in 1841, being a coheir of Sir John de Hastings, summoned to parliament as Baron Hastings."

Hi,
I am tracing my Constable family who are from Surrey I believe. I am trying to find details of my great great grandparents in England. My great grandparents came to Australia on a ship called the 'Grand Trianon' in 1858. They were George and Mary Constable. She was Mary Boughen, born in 1837 in Markham, Norfolk. George was born in 1837 in Peckham, Rye, Surrey. They were married at St Giles Church, Camberwell, Surrey on 4/4/1858. They had 10 children, all born in Australia. Henry, Alfred, Elizabeth, James, George, Charlotte, Mary, Charles, Martha, and Robert (my Grandfather) They were born in Maitland, Patricks Plain, Murrurundi and Tamworth. Alfred married Mary Slack-Smith and they took the name Smith Constable, George died 20/07/1879 aged 42 and Mary died 19/05/1923 aged 86. Both are buried in Colly Blue cemetry. All information greafuly accepted.

Arthur/Naomi Constable, DC,FL,WV,?

My husband's aunt, Naomi (Mrs. Arthur) Constable moved from New Port Richey, FL to Dunbar, WV after 2000 and disappeared from the radar. She was born in 1891. Arthur died in 1989 in FL and we lost Naomi when she left FL without a forwarding address. A kind soul from another list found her for me in WV, but there is no record of her now. Her maiden name is Rampey. If anyone has any information on her we would be very appreciative to receive it.
