William S. Constantine of Manchester, Lancs, & Victoria, B.C.

I am looking for the family of William S. Contantine, born c. 1805 or 1806 at Manchester, Lancashire, England. I believe he was married to Elizabeth Sharples at Manchester Cathedral 6 Jan 1832, and they had at least 4 children, Emanuel, James William, Mary Anna, and Emily, all christened at Manchester Cathedral on 20 Sep 1840. I know at some point William and son Emanuel arrived on the West Coast of North America. William, a carpenter, remarried to my ggreat grandmother, Harriet, widow of John Foster, both originally from Manchester, sometime between 1853 and 1871, becoming step-father to Abraham, Isaac, Martha J., Mary, Jacob and John Foster. The marriage record does not exist in the CofE archives. He is listed in the Victoria census, tax records and directories from 1870 forward. They lived the rest of their lives at Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and are buried together at the Ross Bay Cemetery. His death certificate from Feb 1890 at the age of 84 has very few details, with nothing indicating any family connections.

Manuel Constantine's name is handwritten on the back of one business card belonging to the postcard collection of Martha Foster Lee Speck of San Francisco, which spans 1893 to 1944. The card is for La Tosca Concert Hall at Astoria, Oregon. I believe it dates before 1921, and most likely to 1904, when I know Martha Lee visited her Foster cousins there. Emanuel may have married Jane Allred at Mancester in 1867. There is a homestead record for Manuel Constantine at Humboldt Co., California on 12 August 1901. There are also listings at Seattle and Tacoma for a later Emanuel Constantine. If any of these are familiar, I would be grateful for any light you can shed on our family connections.

Mysterious CONSTANTINE Gravesite

I live in Albertville, Alabama - Marshall Co. and I found this in the local newspaper and thought it might help someone.

CARRIE JOSEPH (possibly josephine)
CONSTANTINE
DAUGHTER OF
H. H. & C. J.
CONSTANTINE
OCT. 4, 1882
AUG. 20, 1884

This tombstone was found on property located at 1118 Henderson Road in front of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. The owner of the property was clearing the field for a garden when he discovered the headstone. He had bought the property from a neighbor, who told him he thought there were graves on the property, but he didn't know where. When the neighbor passed away, the owner bought the land and discovered only the one headstone. Anyone with information about this tombstone or possible other tombstones located on the property is encouraged to contact THE SAND MOUNTAIN REPORTER at 840-3000, ext. 113.

Constantine

My maternal grandmother was Emma Dilima Constantine, from St Albans,VT. She had an aunt named Malvina. Unfortunately, she was an orphan at St.Joseph Orphanage, maybe had a brother Steven (or Etienne) and married Frank X Collette (sometimes went by Carpenter or Carpentier because his mother was Phoebe Collette married to a Carpenter, who made him change his name to hers) If this is confusing, there might also be a link to a Suppliant Constantine. I have very little to go on. I wish I knew more.

County Clare Constantines

The Irish Constantines are descendants of one Constantine O'Brien who lived around 1100 AD. His descendants Gaelicized his name to O'Consaidin or Anglicized it to Considine. The most famous living member of this clan is Thomas A. Constantine, born in Buffalo, NY in 1938. Tom retired last year after a 40-year career in law enforcement, including 7 years as head of the NY State Police and 5 years as head of the DEA. He's on the faculty of the State University of New York. Read about him at www.constantinescircusinc.com.

On May 25, the London Times reported that Thomas A. Constantine, late of the New York State Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration, is nearing appointment as head of the new provincial police force that is being organized as part of the peace process in Northern Ireland. This man is the world's greatest cop. If anyone can do this job, it is he.

Charles Constantine, NWMP

The Yukon Gold Rush began in the early 1890s. Gold fever brought people from all over the world to what quickly became wild and lawless mining camps. The citizenry petitioned the government in Ottawa to send a sizeable detatchment of the Northwest Mounted Police. In 1894, one Mountie showed up, one Inspector Charles Constantine, whose forebears were from Yorkshire, England. He established Fort Constantine and brought law and order to the Yukon Territory where he stayed and worked devotedly until his health failed.
