Pete Conte Sr.1925-2012 Ohio

MARION: Pete Conte Sr., of Marion, Ohio, fell asleep in death on Saturday, February 25, 2012.

Pete, born in 1925 in Akron, Ohio,(Summit County is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Toth Conte, who he was proud to tell everyone is "the most beautiful woman he ever met and the best cook ever."

He is also survived by his sister, Anna (Joe) Conte Madden; and six children, Patricia (Larry) Lynch of Marion, Ohio, Peter Jr. (Barb) Conte of Forest, John Michael (Cyndi) Conte of Marion, David (Lori) Conte of Delaware, Ohio, April (Gil) DeGregory of Battle Creek, Michigan, and Lisa (Richard) Timberlake of Greenup, Kentucky.
He has 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; in addition to nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rosa and Giacomo Conte; sister, Angela Conte Dufala; and brother, Joseph Conte.

Pete served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and a memorial marker will be placed for him at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.

Pete left a legacy in many aspects of his life that will not be forgotten. Pete was a tremendously generous man, and he was a good judge of character. No matter who you were, somehow, within a short time of meeting Pete, you felt like you were part of his family. He loved traveling, singing, watching the Indians and Buckeyes, and enjoyed good Italian food.

Pete was known throughout his community for his business, Conte Home Improvements, started in 1973, and he took seriously his commitment to his customers.

Pete was never afraid to cry with or for someone. He truly felt empathy for people, and he tried to help members of his congregation, even during the week prior to his death. He was baptized in 1975, and served as a ministerial servant in the Marion Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Pete was very proud of the family that he and Betty were blessed with. He had a special way of making each one of his six children feel like he or she was his favorite child. Without a doubt, some of Pete's happiest moments were when his large family gathered throughout the year. The food, usually pasta, was always "the best I ever ate." He often led off an evening of singing and music with an a capella "My Way" and "Hey Compadre," and his voice will never be forgotten. By his word and example, he taught us all to love life and live it to the fullest, to be thankful, to be generous with forgiveness. He taught us to never give up on someone we love.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, March 3rd from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Marion, Ohio, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m.

Memorial donations in Pete's name may be made to the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers if desired.

We loved him, but our love for him pales in comparison to how much he loved all of us.

Published in the The Marion Star from March 1 to March 3, 2012

Conte/Conti from Connellsville, Fayette, PA

Afternoon,

I'm attempting to research the Conte/Conti side of the family but that side of the family wasn't very close and have no records except some basic stuff for my grandfather.

My Grandfather was:

Michael Conte
Born : 07 Jan 1912 in Connellsville, Fayette Co., PA, US
Died : 10 JUN 1997 in Indian Head, Charles, Maryland, USA

My father, who was not very close to his father or fathers side, believes these were his fathers siblings as I found on a census report.

Lucy Conte
Anthony Conte
Louise Conte
Josephine Conte
Madaline Conte
Paul Conte

I believe his parents were a George Conti/Conte and Mary (?). If i'm looking at the right census data it says they lived in Connellsville, Fayette Co in 1930 and I think George died in 1960 in Connellsville.

I'm not sure if the last name is Conti or Conte. I found records for my grandfather (michael conte) where his last name was listed as Conti and then another where it was Conte and the census records are a little hard to determine if it's Conti or Conte.

I'm trying to get past this bearer and see if I can learn more about that side of the family and start tracing it back to Italy.

Does anyone have any information related to this people?
Thanks for looking!

Hi,

You had responded to my father's original post (Carlos Conte) and I just wanted to follow up because I don't know if he ever did. The Anna Conte you speak of I saw as the daughter of a Vicenzo Conte. My great-grandfather Giuseppe Conte had a brother named Vicenzo that came to the US in late 20's early 30's when Giuseppe went to Brazil. Do you have any info about Filomena Labarca? She was my great-grandmother and lived in Brazil with us but passed in the 80's.
Thanks in advance, carlos conte Jr.

We haven't been able to trace him further back because we aren't sure where he came from. Any relation? I am his direct descendant.
I AM REPLYING TO YOUR MESSAGE REGARDING YOUR GREAT GRANDMOTHER MARIA CONTE. MY MOTHER WAS NERINA (ONERINA) RUGGERIO (RODGERS) AND HER SISTERS AND BROTHERS ARRIVED IN 1915-16 IN BOSTION. ACTUALLY, UNCLE FRANK AND UNCLE JIM (ARESNIO) ARRIVED, I BELIEVE IN 1912. I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO TRACE THE EXACT DAY THEY ARRIVED BUT I DID FIND THE 1920 CENSUS AND GOT SOME INFO FROM THAT. THE YOUNGEST BROTHER, UNCLE JOE AND I STILL SEE EACH OTHER FREQUENTLY. HE IS 91 AND IN EXCELLENT HEALTH. I WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE TO HEAR FROM YOU.

I invite any of the direct male ancestors of Jimmy and Maria Conte to participate in genetic genealogy testing to find "genetic" cousins who are decended from the Conte's of Altomonte Italy.

The new science of genetic genealogy helps long separated members of the same family find each other through simple cheek swab Y-DNA tests. Family Tree DNA of Houston TX has a large data base of Y-DNA samples and also the experience to identify where to look for family members from a specific geographic area.

This process also will give the testee an idea of where his distant ancestors came from before they arrived in Italy. This process can start for as little as $99 for the first level test. Results take 4 to 6 weeks.

Please visit www.familytreedna.com for information. Also www.Calabriadna.com tells an beautiful story of one man's search for his southern Italian family using Y-DNA testing.

If you have questions, please contact me at dmfranco@hotmail.com

I am a distant cousin of Conte's.

Dennis Michael Franco
Saint Louis
