Re: Conveys in Ireland and Liverpool

Hi Mr Convey :),

You have a few names to work with so thats a start!! If you know their rough ages as well, that will help also.

You can look up names and approximate ages via The Irish census for 1901 amd 1911. You can get them both by the following link: www.census.nationalarchives.ie
Names such as John, James, Peter, William, Michael, seem to be very common around that period for Conveys!!

Alot of Irish couldnt read or write back then, you'll find some may have spelt Convy or Convey and will change between census's!! So look up both.

The majority of Conveys came from the West of Ireland (Connaght) , some in the North(Ulster), Very very few in (Leinster).

Let me know how you get on!
Regards
Fergal Convey

I know this is a very old reply, but I believe this branch of the Irish Conveys are related to my wife's branch. My wife's branch were also from Ballina. James Convey and Sarah Cairns had 7 children born from 1897 - 1909. Michael, Mary, Annie Katie, James, Patrick Joseph (wife's line), Bridget and Joseph. James' father was Eugene. I'm sure Eugene and your branch are somehow related. Also, Michael Convey was in the 2nd Bn of the Connaught Rangers and died in WWI at the first battle of ypres.

I am looking for information on James. He immigrated to Canada in 1928 and then to the US in 1931 to New York city. The trail stops there.

Conveys from Co. Sligo: Bridget Convey - Anthony Dunn

Dear Convey Cousins,

I'm looking for information on exactly where my Convey ancestors were from in Co. Sligo. I understand the vast majority of the Conveys originated in Mayo, but we know my family came from Sligo.

My great-great-great grandfather was Thomas Convey, a tailor. His two sons, Michael and Patrick (born in the 1830s) went to America. Their sister, Bridget, b 1841, went first to work in Bradford, England, where she married an Anthony Dunn in 1862/3 and then moved back to Ireland, probably Sligo, with her family. She had at least one daughter, possibly 2, Margaret and/or Mary.

This is when Patrick and Michael in America lost track of her. I would greatly appreciate any information you have on an Anthony and Briget (Convey) Dunn residing in Ireland in the late 1800s.

Kind regards,

Martin Convey

Hi,

That's great to hear that she remembers me. The funny thing is, my dad isn't really social, which is just like me. We talk to very few of his family members. For example, his mother, Pat and stepfather Frank Kokoska, and once in a blue moon we'll talk to Pat's sister, Jennifer. He hasn't seen Glenn or Lee in years.

Most of our old pictures at my house consist of my mother's grandparents. We only have one picture of Nana and Grandpa Roy together. We have a few pictures of me as a little baby in Nana's lap. The picture of nana and Grandpa Roy is on Pat's laptop, too. It is basically Grandpa Roy sitting down on the couch looking at the camera with Nana bending down on the floor. If I can dig it out, I'll show you.

My email is peachfreak90(at)hotmai(dot)com (I did that just so the spamming bots wouldn't have a field day with my email address). I would be more than happy to see these pictures. If I have the time, I'll get a picture of me, my dad, and the picture of Nana and Grandpa Roy to you.

Hope to hear from you soon.

--Timmy

Hi,

My sister Anne, says she remembers you. She said you were born right before she left to come home to KY. My daughter was born in 1991. You both are the same age.
I can't tell you much about Aunt Patty. Growing up we were around them in summers and sometimes Christmas. Very private family. Gramps (Grandpa Roy) died in 1969. I think. I never knew him. I was just a year old when he died. Nana would spend a lot of summers with us. She was so short. I was at one time really close to her.
I have a lot of info on the Mullaney's and Brastow's if you want any. I'm still trying to do research on Gramps's Mom and Dad. For some reason I found Gramps's dad in FL. Send me your e-mail and I can send it direct.

Can't wait to hear from you again.
Paula

Hi Paula,

I was born in 1991, so Nana Brastow was only alive for a few years after I was born. I do have a few pictures of me as a baby sleeping in her lap. Also, we have one picture of Roy and Catherine from the 60s. Grandpa John died when I was about 8, and I really miss him. All of the Brastow traits really do carry on. Me and my dad aren't exactly social, so up until about now, I never knew a whole lot outside of the immediate Brastow family.

My dad married Melissa Gonsalves. I don't know if you remember her or if you were in MA when they were together. I'm also trying to track down some of my mother's distant relatives. I've had more luck finding Brastow relatives than my mother. Her father is William "Bill" Joseph Gonsalves and her mother is Gail Elizabeth O'Connell (all alive). I know a lot about the Gonsalves, but the O'Connells are a little bit harder to track.

When I was born, I had six out of my eight great grandparents alive. All four of my mother's grandparents were alive. Three of them died in the late 90s, while one of her grandparents is still alive. I believe both of Scott, my father's grandmother's were still alive. Roy obviously passed long before I was born, and so was Patty's father.

Maybe you know more about your aunt Patty. I do not know her maiden name. She has a brother, Jay, and a sister, Jennifer, so Jay would still have the original last name. Would you happen to know about her parents or anything? If so, that would be great.

Thanks a lot ad I hope to hear from now.

Well Hello Timothy!! I am your cousin. I know Lee, Scott, and Glenn. Haven't seen them in years. But when growing up we spent many summers in MA with our Nana. Yes I called her Nana. Named my daughter, Iris Catherine-Anne. She is named after my mother, nana and sister. Your Uncles know my sister Anne. Mom, Iris, died in 91. After she died my sister Anne took over care of Nana. But then she had two small children and had to move back home after Nana died. I called your grandfather Uncle Johnny. Remember him VERY well. And Aunt Pat. I must say this Brastow family is very hard to trace. I have relied on other people to help me because I don't have access to records in MA. I live in KY.
I have alot of records on the Mullaney's, Brastow's, and others. Looking forward to hearing from you again.

Cousin Paula

Hello Paula,

Catherine Mullaney, or better known to me as "Nana Brastow", was my great-grandmother. She apparently died of a stroke.

My name is Timothy Brastow. Where am I on your family tree? Well, John Brastow, the brother to your mother Iris, is my grandfather. John Brastow married Patricia ----- (I do not know her maiden name - she went from her maiden name to Brastow to Kokoska) and had 3 kids - Scott, Lee, and Glenn Brastow. If you know any of these three, this is great. I am the son of Scott Brastow, who was born in May of 1967.

Up until I found your post, I never knew my grandfather, John, had a sister. Is my greataunt, Iris deceased? If not, then, wow, this is amazing....

I hope you reply to this and I am looking forward to hearing from you.

I'm a g gd of Michael Cooney with a brother John. They arrived in Quebec or NY about 1846 or 1847. Cannot find more "family" and have considered a "coffin ship". Battling problem with transcription errors Convey and Cooney do look the same in old handwriting. My last name is Cooney so I can spot misspellings pretty quickly...it is just getting others to believe me and correct information. You might try your search around Lake Ontario. I've seen the pattern where Irish settled in Canada and headed to the US when babies were due to be born. Good luck!
Sandy Cooney

CONVEY from Westmeath?

I'm looking for any information on John and Mary CONVEY reportedly from Westmeath, Ireland but I'm not convinced on that. John was born about 1810 and Mary around 1812. They came to the US sometime between 1836 and 1839, probably landing in New York. They had one son, Lawrence, born in Ireland, one son, John, born in NY and 5 more children born in Iowa. I've seen their names spelled different ways in different censuses. May be Convey, Convy or Convee. Their daughter, Jane, married Thomas Newton Wright in Iowa in 1875. Any help is appreciated!

Stephanie Wright

Hi Brenda,

Thanks for your email, I can trace my family back to my great grandfather James Convey buried in Ballinaglera, Leitrim,on the border of Cavan. He married an O'Gorman. They had 16 Children, they were all raised in a village in Cavan called Dowra, some Conveys still live there today. Some died of TB, one died outside Carnaross in a motor accident around 1920, his name was Bernie Convey. Before James Settled in Cavan, his family came from Sligo/Mayo area. But as far as I'm aware the name first originated in Derry.
My grandmother remembers your mother, Annie and your father Mick, if our calculations are correct. She would like to call you, perhaps tomorrow?
Regards, Clodagh O'Gorman

My Grandmother was Catherine Elizabeth Mullaney. Her parents were Michael and Annie Agnes Convey Mullaney. Annies parents were Michael and Bridget Ford Convey. I do not have any info on this Convey family. For some reason my Grandmother never talked about her family. All I ever knew was that they were Irish. She passed in '94'. Wish I had asked more questions but I never did. Now I am totally losted with this Mullaney and Convey family.

Any info you can give me on this Convey family would be greatly appricated. Dates, names, anything you can give me. All I have is the above names.

Thank you for answering my post. I have traced this family for more than 10 years now. And have not gotten far.... I was really excited to hear from someone who knew this family.

Paula

Hi Virginia,

This is very strange replying to your email of 2003. I am also looking for information about Thomas Convey of Ballina, who left Ireland approximately 1920 after serving in the British Army in three different regiments (Connaught Rangers, Scottish Rifles and Canadian Expeditionery Forces).

My father, Michael Keady, is his nephew. Convey is my great uncle, so I am told. I have ordered a search of his records through a professional military researcher in England. I'm in Redondo Beach, California.

Are you related to Tommy Convey? Where do you reside and why are you looking? You can reply to me directly at kkeady@qantasvacations.com or call 1-310-999-4884

Cheers,
Kieron Keady

Convey-search

Hi, I'm the great granddaughter of Bridget and John Convey from Ireland. Their daughter Annie (b.2 Feb 1868-Ireland) came to the US around 1885 and married Martin Welch (b.1865-Co. Mayo) who I think also came to the US around 1885. They lived in Pawtucket, RI after they married in 1890. They had 7 children; Nellie (Helen), John (Joseph), Anna, Martin (Dewey), Catherine, Elizabeth (Besse), and finally James, who was born 3 months after his father died of pneumonia.
I'm trying to find out the maiden name of Bridget Convey and also, the names of Bridget and John's other children besides Annie. I'd love to know exactly when their daughter Annie came to the US. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone out there? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, so much. Lynn.
I have a Patrick Convey who came to the U.S. about 1887. He had a son Thomas. He was married to an Ellen Peyton from Co. Mayo. Does any of this sound familiar? Debbie
