Dr. William D. Conyers moved with his wife from NC to Covington, Ga. where he was a practicing physician and a large land owner. Several progressive citizens met to promote the building of a railroad. Dr. Conyers was interested in the project and was instrumental in procuring the right-of-way. The City of Conyers took its name about 1843 from Doctor Conyers of Covington, GA who kindly and generously deeded to the Georgia Railroad the right-of-way through his property in Rockdale County and the land required for railroad purposes at the station. His sister, Patsy Conyers, married John Washington Ray and moved to Mt. Meigs, AL. They brought her younger brother, James R. Conyers, with them. This is our line. John E. Conyers was
two years older than James Ross. There were twelve children.

I only have one son named Edward as of now. Do you think you could give me the other four children? Anna's mother was Recepty Knight, a sister to my GGrandfather and I have a tree on them that goes back to the 1300's. They were Quaker's and happen to come from a man that is famous in Quaker history. His name was Giles Knight and he came over on the ship "Welcome" with William Penn. Another relative however and really nothing to brag about was a cousin named George Armstrong Custer. I was really trying to find Recepty's decendents to make sure they all had this. I even have a photo of her and her sisters together.

Thank you very much,

Linda Morris

I am also interested in this Dennis Conyers. His son William married Elizabeth Jarvis (dob ~1791 in Maryland) and moved to Ripley County Indiana where their daughter Margaret Thompson Conyers married my great-great grand father William Gilliland. Dennis lived near the William Jarvis in Pendleton County KY. He appears to have been in KY as early as 1780.

I am looking for definitive death dates for Dennis and his wife (burial site?) and William Jarvis death and burial. Both seem to have died shortly after 1820. William's wife Margaret Thompson is buried in Ripley County Indiana.

I'm a direct descendant of Azariah Dunn and Hannah Conyers and I just started looking back into Azariah’s origins recently. He and Hannah settled in Robertson Co., TN after their marriage in 1781 and we have most of the information from that point in TN on, but have been unsuccessful over the years in tying anything solid before that time. There’s a record of an Azariah Dunn serving in the 4th battalion of the Washington Co. Militia from 1781-1782 (serving with William below) which would place him in the area at the time of their marriage if he is the same Azariah Dunn. I’ve attempted to tie him back to the Dunns of Piscataway, New Jersey, but have only theory at present due to a couple of Azariah’s that existed within the families the Dunn’s were marrying into during the same time period (Azariah Dunham and Azariah Martin).

Do you possibly have any information on Azariah and Hannah’s wedding or details of their location prior to arriving in TN in the 1790’s?

Thank you,
Marc Dunn
Hi , yes I would like to know about the reference about Azariah. I have hit a dead end with Azariah. I will find what I have about John H. and his decendents. About 25 years ago My mother, aunt, and I drove to Richmond Mo. from Orrick MO where my parents are from. We went to the county court house and was able photocopy several documents relating to our Family. I think they lived in Camden which is in between Orrick and Richmond Mo.. If you will give me you address I will see what I can find and send copies to you. Currently I dont have any geneology programs on any of my computers so I cannot send any digital files.
Hi Terri, I am the same person that you emailed several years ago. I'm afraid I have not done much on the Conyers line for awhile. I have hit an absolute dead end with Azariah. I had always hoped to connect him to Benjamin but have never found any documentation to support them being related. They both lived in Kentucky about three counties apart, Nicholas and Shelby but I don't if in the same time frame. What are you looking for specficly? I will look for the will of John H. Azariah's son and send you a copy. I would like to see your file on Benjamin, I don't think it attached. James

Hi, Thanks for your reply. I have hit a dead end with Azariah Conyers. All of my geneology paperwork is packed up right now, but I will try to find it. I agree with you about Azariah being born in Kentucky in 1781 and marring elizabeth in 1811. Going by the 1830 or 1840 Nicholas Co. Kentucky census and the 1850 Ray Co. Missouri census, It looks like Azariah, Elizabeth , Darius and John migrated to ray co. Mo. Fielding stayed in Kentucky. Elizabeth died at some point and Azariah apparently married a women named Malinda. I was in contact with one of his decendants back about the time of this original post. He also could not find anything past Azariah. I also was in contact with a Conyers out in California who had traveled to England and Ireland researching the name and he thought he had read somewhere that Azariah was a tailor by trade. I don't know if I would put much stock in that. I have been hoping to tie him to Benjamin Conyers but no such luck so far. I have a photocopy of John H Conyers Will. James Conyers

Hi

I just posted another message re Benjamin. I am starting to work on my Conyers genealogy again. As I mentioned in my previous email most of my stuff is in storage and I won't be able to access it for awhile. Would it be possible to get a copy of the will you have for John H? I would really appreciate it.

My biggest focus now is still trying to positively connect Dennis, but Benjamin as always bothered me so I was going to begin searching for more info for him. I would also be happy to check around for Azariah. I know I have seen that name quite a bit and I am hoping I have copies of some of those documents.

Thanks
Terri
ConyersFamily@msn.com

James
I don't know if you are the James I've emailed in the past. If not, here is what I have on Benjamin. I go back two more generations (Dennis > Samuel > Benjamin.) I actually go back further but have not been able to prove it yet. I published a book a few years ago with all this information. I haven't done anything on the Conyers for a couple years now because I have been working on mine which is all Sweden and Sicily so it has been time consuming. I am starting to look into the Conyers again.

As for Azariah I do not have anything on my chart (7000+ names). I MIGHT have some info, but unfortunately I rent a storage facility and it will be quite some time before I can get to it. My stepson has all his woodworking equipment there and I cannot get to any of my boxes until he can move it.

My FTW genealogy report is about 63 pages for Benjamin's line. I do not have the last generation (or two because these people are still alive.) I am trying to attach the file to this. If it does not attach please let me know and I will email it (ConyersFamily@msn.com). You may already have it. I only have a few notes, below. I was not able to get much personal info. I don't recall if it was Benjamin or Bartlet, but I have a photo of the home one of them built. I'm afraid that is also in my storage facility.

In Benjamin's pension application he said he lived in Fauquier County at time of his first enlistment (1777), on the Monogahela at his second enlistment, and after the war lived in Stafford Co., VA. Stafford Co. tax lists shows John and Benjamin Conyers. Supposedly John and were close. In 1800, Benjamin appears in Scott Co., KY. His pension records mention that his enlistment papers were burned in his brothers house. He also stated in the pension records that he lived in Shelby Co., KY for the last 30 years.

Kentucky pension roll of 1835: Shelby County, Private, Virginia Militia - $40 annual allowance; $120 received. Pension started May 23, 1834 at 74 years of age.

I have not found any mention of the name of his wife or even a reference to his wife. In his pension records, he mentions 'his father' and 'his brother', yet never gives a name.[Conyers 01-04-03.FTW]

In Benjamin's pension application he said he lived in Fauquier County at time of his first enlistment (1777), on the Monogahela at his second enlistment, and after the war lived in Stafford Co., VA.

I believe that Azariah was the son of Dennis Conyers (d. 1822 in Pendleton County, Kentucky. I think he was probably named for Dennis's presumed brother-in-law Azariah Dunn, who married Hannah Conyers in 1781.

Azariah is undoubtedly the same person who appears as "Hezekiah Conyers (lame), born 1757" and called *brother* of this same Dennis, in the pedigree of the family of Enoch W. Conyers (b. 1829), the microfilm (1,597,807, item 49) of which is at the Family History Library. This says that Dennis (b. 1755), Hezekiah, and Jesse (b. 1759) were the sons of the brother of the grandfather of Enoch Conyers. The information was written down long after these people lived, however, and it was garbled. There is no contemporary record of a "Hezekiah" Conyers, and the Jesse Conyers also lived later.

John Conyers (bp. 6 June 1725 St. Paul's Parish, Stafford Co., VA, d. before 26 Nov. 1770 Fauquier Co., VA) m. Alice. A deed from 1770 shows that they had sons William and John (who then were of legal age, others being underage). It appears that the family then moved to southwestern Pennsylvania. Here is a sketch:
William, b. before 1749; d. after 1812, when in Robertson Co., TN; m., by 1770, Peggy ----. Served in Washington Co., PA, militia, 1781-2; in 1794, officer in Ford's Regiment of militia, Tennessee.
John, b. before 1749; d. 1795; had a grant of land in Mt. Pleasant Twp., Washington Co., PA, in 1774; Washington Co. Orphan's Court records, 1795, shows that he was survived by four minor children: John, Thomas, Sarah, Samuel
? Henry, living in 1781 in Cecil Twp., Washington Co., PA, prob. m. Mary ----, living 1783, prob. d. 1840.
Dennis, d. 1822 Pendleton Co., KY; served in Washington Co. militia, 1781; son b. in TN, 1782; in Fayette Co., KY, 1787; m. ?(2) Mary ----.
Thomas, b. c.1757, d. 1 Jan. 1847 Crockett Co., TN; 10 Sept. 1787, in Sumner Co., TN, Jane Wills. He served in the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment; moved from Pennsylvania to Wilson Co., TN, in 1784.
James, d. after 1811, when in Missouri; m. Mary Perry
In Tennessee, 1791, 1794; Christian Co.,KY, 1799; first settler of Pulaski/Alexander Co., IL, 1805
Hannah, b. 12 Nov. 1763, d. 11 May 1833 Robertson Co., TN; m. 28 Feb. 1781 Azariah Dunn, b. 15 Apr. or Oct. 1757, d. 22 Apr. 1831 Robertson Co., TN (dates from Bible record).

There may have been more daughters than the one listed above. Evidently, it appears that John's widow Alice and her family all moved to southwestern Pennsylvania after 1770(perhaps she remarried). Then about 1784, all but John moved to Tennessee. Records show that William, James, and Hannah all lived in Robertson County. Dennis's son John, born about 1786, reported his birthplace as Tennessee.

John (d. 1770) was the son of Dennis and Margaret Conyers of Fauquier Co., VA.

Paul Gifford

Hannah Conyers

The likelihood is that Hannah was the daughter of John Conyers (1725-1770) of Fauquier Co., VA, by his wife Alice. They had proven children William (m. Peggy) and John, both adults in 1770. Then they probably also had Dennis (d. Pendleton Co., KY); Thomas (d. in TN); and James (d. Alexander Co., IL). William, Thomas, and most of the others moved from Washington Co., PA, to middle Tennessee about 1784. Presumably Hannah married Dunn in Pennsylvania. Have you looked for the family there, in the published *Pennsylvania Archives*? There was an Azariah Conyers, b. c.1781, who was in Nicholas Co., KY, in 1830, later settling in Missouri, who was probably a son of William or another brother.

Paul Gifford

Just of couple of comments. Samuel Conyers had to have been dead by 1793, when Keziah Conyers first appears on the Bourbon County (KY) tax lists (a woman could only be listed if a widow or single). Samuel was definitely in Washington Twp., Fayette Co., Pa., in 1786, and in neighboring Westmoreland Co., PA (tax lists; see "Pennsylvania Archives"). I don't find him in the 1790 census. I think he probably died between 1787 and 1790, probably in Fayette or Westmoreland Counties, PA. Various members of the family then went to Kentucky (Bath County, where the son Isaac settled, was formed much later, from Bourbon County).

Dennis's first wife was named Margaret, but "Thornhill" is somebody's miscopying of "Thornbury." Her first husband was Richard Thornbury, who died in 1716. She had a son Richard (d. 1742). She then married Dennis Conyers, and had Samuel (said to be born in 1719) and John (baptized in 1725 in Overwharton Parish).

Paul Gifford
No, they were of different generations.
Samuel had children born between about 1755
and 1775, while Thomas was born around 1757.
Samuel didn't live in Cecil Township, but
moved from Fauquier Co., Va., in 1778 to Fayette
County, PA, east of Cecil Township. Thomas must
have been a nephew of Samuel. Samuel's sons
Dennis and Ishmael, however, lived in Cecil Township,
from around the 1790s.

Paul Gifford

I don't have all my notes with me, but there are a couple of comments to make.

The source for most of this information is contained in some pages filmed by the LDS. It was based on family records that Enoch W. Conyers, of Oregon, grandson of Isaac N. Conyers (1765-1844), had. It contained exact birthdates for John (1757) and Ann (1762). It also named David and Nancy, but without exact birth dates. I would suggest that Nancy was actually Ann, and that she married Samuel Paddock (two apparent children lived in Bath Co., KY). Benjamin went to Scott Co., KY; Ishmael to Washington Co., KY; Dennis died in Holmes Co., OH; and Enoch went to Lewis County, WV. Samuel died in the 1780s in Fayette Co., PA, or neighboring Westmoreland Co., PA. The widow Keziah was in Bath Co., KY, by 1793, when named in tax lists. Samuel was the son of Dennis Conyers.

Paul Gifford

Oops, forgot...Isaac Newton Conyers was born in 1765, not 1763. As far as I'm aware, there is no evidence for a Martha Conyers. Some descendants also are misidentifying John Conyers (d. 1832 Stafford Co., VA) as his first cousin, John Conyers, son of John Conyers (1725-1770). However, it is clear that the one who died in 1832 was Samuel's son, because Benjamin was associated with him in Stafford County, and also because it appears that all or most of John Conyers, Sr.'s children went to Washington Co., PA, and then Tennessee and Kentucky.

Paul Gifford

Glad to make contact. In the '90s, I compiled a pretty complete Faulkner/Falconar/Falconer genealogy, but wasn't able to locate you. This was published by Heritage Books in 1997 (_Falconer of Halkerton_), but unfortunately now is out of print. Alexander (my ancestor, incidentally, through his son John, grandson Alexander, and great-grandson Richard Wilson) and Samuel were probably the sons of David Falconar, born 22 Apr. 1726 Prince Georges Co., MD, living in 1787 in Fayette Co., PA, but who was said by his brother Samuel's granddaughter to have moved to Kentucky. David was the son of Alexander Falconar (c.1693-1758+) and his wife Susannah (Duvall) Falconar. Alexander was the youngest son of David Falconar (c.1632-1713), Quaker merchant of Edinburgh, by his wife Margaret (Molleson) Falconar (1653-1697); David was the eldest son of Sir John Falconar (c.1600-1670), Master of the Scottish Mint, by Sibilla Ogilvy; Sir John was the third son of Sir Alexander Falconer of Halkerton (d. 1645/6) and Agnes Carnegie. The line goes much further back. As to the Conyers, I'll tag onto Stan Thornton's message.

Paul Gifford

See my comments above. Samuel Conyers did not die in 1815 (this date appears in Enoch W. Conyers's papers, microfilmed by the LDS). He had to have died prior to 1793, when Keziah Conyers is listed in the 1793 tax list of Bath Co., KY (she would not have been listed unless she was single or widowed). Most likely he died between 1786 and 1790 in Fayette or Westmoreland Counties, PA. Margaret "Thornhill" was actually Margaret, widow of Richard Thornbury, who died in 1716, which can be proved by Fauquier County deeds and the Overwharton parish register. A lot of this information gets copied from one person to another, without reference to the original records.

Paul Gifford

Re: Azariah Conyers

Hello James, As I told you previously, my information on Azariah is really limited. His son John H. was my GGgrandfather. The reference to him being a tailor and being lame is in the "Bourbon, Harrison, Nicholas and Scott Counties, Kentucky History" on pages 358 & 411. Once the family moved to Missouri they stayed in the Camden area until my grandfather Monroe moved to Colorado sometime in the 1940's (?). I would appreciate any/all information you can send me regarding Azariah, his siblings etc. I can provide additional info on John's family tree. I have been in contact with the Richmond newspaper and wrote an open letter to the editor requesting anyone with information or knowledge of Azariah or his family to please contact me. I will let you know if I hear from anyone. I have also been in contact with a lady who's Conyers family is through the branch that left Kentucky and went to Arkansas about the same time my branch went to Missouri. I will pass on whatever info she provides me if you would like. You can find some info on the website www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/usgenweb/mo/ray/books/1881ray.html My name is Cheryl Worster and my mailing address is 6154 S. Country Road - Mayer, AZ 86333 and my email address is crworster@msn.com if you would like to email me directly. I look forward to receiving whatever information you (or anyone else) can share with me. Thank you

Hello again James, I was thankful for your timely response. I looked through what little Conyers family history I have and have not located a Benjamin yet. I will definitely contact you if I do. I am related to Azariah by way of my father Cecil LeRoy Conyers, son of Monroe Wilson Conyers, son of Nathaniel L. Conyers, son of John H. Conyers who is obviously a son of Azariah. I would appreciate any information you may have on this branch of the Conyers family tree. I located a mention of Azariah in a Kentucky history reference book that lists him as a tailor, but also lists that he was 'lame' having one leg shorter than the other. If you would want the name, etc. of that reference book I will send it to you. As I said previously, if I come across any references to a Benjamin Conyers I will be happy to forward you the information, and I respectively request any information you may have that could assist me in the search for more information on my fathers' line.
Thank you so much

I know that your original posting was several years ago but just came across it. The info I have for Azariah Conyers shows that he had children named: Darius, John H., Fielding and Lucinda. There is no Frances but I would not swear that I have all of them. He is my ggggrandfather through John H. Conyers. If you have learned that you are related to him I would love to hear from you and maybe compare information.
