Owen was my g.g.grandfather on my dads side, I know they came from Clontibret County Monaghan I have just had contact from Theresa Bristow who is also descended fron Margaret Coogan, Which is my maiden name.I will look through my research i remember reading a death certificate about a railway accident, I will look it out and get back to you. Hope to hear from you soon.
Cheers Mags

Ms. Morse,
I just read this post. This is my father, William C. Coogan. Are you a family member? There are several errors that I thought I would clear up. One of the daughters, Jane Clark is actually Jana Clark, and Diane Terpatra is Diane Terpstra. Do you have any family history?
Thanks
Kathleen

Hi I've recently started tracing my family history and believe I am a descendant of Owen Coogan. I think he is my great, great, great, great grandfather on my paternal grandmother's side.
Michael Coogan and Margaret Leer (or McAleer) had a daughter Margaret and it is through her that I am descended. My father left Coatbridge as a boy, and thereby ended six generations of our line in the area.
I wonder if you have any information on the lives of the Coogan's before they left Ireland?
Also, I have found out that Michael Coogan died after being run over on the Sheepford branch railway line. Do you know any details regarding the accident that led to his death?
Best regards,
Angie

Edward Coogan and his Brother John from Cavan

My great grandfathers name was Edward Coogan, he was born around 1888 or so in Cavan or Monahan...and he and his brother John moved to Brooklyn in or around 1911 or so. Edward married Bridget Smith and they had 3 sons, Edward (my grandfather), James, and Bernard. My Grandfather only stayed married to my grandmother a few years, so my dad (edward the III) didn't really know his dad. Therefor, I didn't ever know any of the family that came from James or Bernard...my cousins...and I don't know any of the people that came before my great grandfather...if anyone has any information that would be so cool. I heard lately that family of James moved to Florida, and my dad has recently found a half brother since Ed coogan the II remarried and had a son named Bernard..who I am in touch with. Please write me at shaktey@aol.com if you know anything about this family. Also...there were cousins named Reilley that were from Monahan that I have no idea about...and a cousin named Bridget supposedly was living with Ed coogan the

Hello there, great to hear from a Meath Coogan!
I got on very well really. I have found 3 groups or areas of concentration for Coogan in Meath from the late 1700's. I don't know if the families are related back beyond this date but its quite possible as the family christian names are the same in all 3 groups. I am in Meath are you? Which area or family group are you descended from I wonder? Martry, Johnstown Navan, or Waterunder?

I have 4 Owen Coogan's in my family but - my great grandmother, Mary Agnes Coogan married Bartholomew J. Castello - and no one can figure this one.
COOGAN / KEARNEY - Co Kilkenny?
My Grandfather's name was 'Coogan'and was born in Cuffsgrange, which is the diocese of Ossory. Born, about:-
1888 - 1892
He married my Grandmother - Ellen KEARNEY. born July 1902, I believe in a place called 'Coolagh?' - Kilkenny. She was a Farmers daughter, her brother inherited the farm, but later sold it. He (name?), became the Court House Keeper in Kilkenny, but died just before he moved into a lovely Cottage he had just bought for his retirement, which was in the same street as Kilkenny Castle.

Mr and Mrs Coogan (my grandparents), had 9 children, I only recall the names Elizabeth (Betty), Bridgette (Brida), Eileen (my mother), Kevin, James and I believe Patrick (who died at a young age?). Living in Kilkenny, Ireland.

They all migrated to England (1940s?) my grandparents, have since passed away - so lack vital information. Anybody with any infomation or knowledge of this family would be really happy to hear from you. Thanks - Nadia

Hello there, it's Angela here from Australia.

In the last couple of years I've found out that my Esther married Charles Quinn in 1819 in Newry, County Down, Ireland. He was in the British Army at the time. They came to Australia in 1825. So unless the Coogan family moved to Scotland I don't think there is a connection.

Thanks and good luck with your research.

Angela

i read with great interest the research published by the forum on decdendants of Owen Coogan.

Owens son, michael who married margaret Leer had a daughter catherine who married John McLaughlin (sometimes McLachlin) One of their family was Bridget McLaughlin who was my great grandmother. She married Thomas Martin. Both lived in Coatbridge all their lives. Dont know much in the way of info as I never met anyone from that side of my dads family but the coogan connection had already cropped up in my own research. thanks for posting it and if anyone has info on bridget, would be interested to hear about it

In reply to bettyws questions, I regret that I am unable to add any more on the Coogans of Uskerty. My research interest is limited to the Butler side of the Michael Coogan - Eleen Butler family.
Attached is an image of the Coon church graveyard memorial
However, when visiting the locality in 1998, I stayed at Andorra Guest house in Kilkenny St Castlecomer. It was run by Lil Coogan (also nee Coogan) wife of Willy Coogan. Lil recalled 'growing up in Uskerty just a few fields away from her cousin Patsy Coogan, who became a nun. Patsy was a GGdaughter of Michael Coogan and Ellen Butler.
Brian Gleeson

Don't know if I passed this info before, but twice better than not at all.

Nov 24, 1853 John Coogan m Judith Paterson
Present Michael Coogan & Mary Paterson.

Jun 15, 1854 John Paterson m Judy Coogan
Present Thomas Paterson & Bridget Coogan, Uskerty
These are the names of my g grandparents. Would like to confirm this connection. I do have a list of my g grandparents children:
Honora b 1861, Robert b 1864, Mary b 1859, Michael b 1866, John b 1868, James b 1857. These children were baptized in St Brendan's Church in Muckalee, the same parish of the church in Coon, so I feel Judith Coogan is part of Michael Coogan's family, but can't find the connection - possibly 1st cousin to Michael. There are many Coogans from Uskerty buried in the cemetery at St Brendan's.

Do you know the siblings of Michael Coogan and/or his parents? I think a brother may have been the parents of my Judith Coogan. The info I have for Michael's wife is:
Ellen Butler b c 1814, d ?1848. Birth years for their childrn may disprove this death date. Or, would you know anyone researching the line of Michael and Ellen Coogan?

Betty Smith

As the author of the writing, Martin Gleeson from Gowran, Kilkenny', may I add that Martin Gleeson's wife, Margaret, had an older sister named Ellen. Ellen married Michael Coogan of Uskerty on 10 December 1837 and remained there until her death at age 44. Michael and Ellen Coogan had children named Richard, Patrick, Thomas, Michael, James and Catherine.
There is a Coogan memorial stone in the church graveyard at Coon.
Well Betty, wish I could help you, but I don't see any connection - doesn't mean there isn't one. My Judith Coogan, I believe was born in County Kilkenny, possibly Uskerty about 1834/1840. She married John Patterson. Their first child, James, was born 1857. They lived their married life in Coolcullen, Co. Kilkenny. One of their children was my grandmother whom I never met because I was born in the US and she never left Ireland.

Do you have the address (URL) for the Coogan internet site? If not, I will send it to you.

Good luck. Betty S

I am very intereste in your entry of John Paterson and Judy Coogan. My great grandparents, whose children were baptized in St Brendan's in Muckalee Parish, were John Patterson and Judith Coogan. Sure sounds like the same couple. I havent been able to find out anything about her. I'm at a brick wall. I would sure like to find out who her parents were. If your entry is for my gr grandparents, this gives me their marriage date at least. (I do have Robert Patterson for his father. A Robert Patterson of Coolcullen showed up in Griffith's Valuation 1849-1850.) This couple reared their children in Coolcullen, Co Kilkenny.

In the church yard next to St Brendan's were several Coogan headstones that said from Uskerty.

This cpuole's first child was born June 1857. I am attaching a page from the parish records on the Pattersons of that parish and time period. This couple's first child was born Jun 1857.

Betty

I will keep an eye out for any names you might be interested in. It will take some time to get it all in chronological order.

My great grandmother, Judith COOGAN, may be related to him. Her first child was born 1857, so she was born about 1837 give or take a few years.
A Donna Archer decends from Wm COOGAN b 1850 of James Coogan and Mary Byrne/Byrnes/Burns. Got that from some message board and have lost the contact. Betty

Yes. I have already seen all the Mahers on the Census. Jeremiah and John are mine (from Uskerty)

Jeremiah being the brother of my great-grandfather (Patrick) and John being my grandfather. I know of no other Mahers that are related but should pursue some of that.

Any luck with your Judith Coogan? Sounds as though you should follow up further with the other poster (greenwaysdog!!) as she seems to have living relatives. I was hopeful that her family were the ones living closest to the Maher family farm at Uskerty.

Hello Greewaysdog?

I initially posted a reply in response to the dialogue you were in with Betty Smith. I think I was hoping to connect with you as it seems as though your mother and her grandfather are all of old Coogan stock living in Uskerty for years. Would any of your family have any historical knowledge of the Maher family of Uskerty? I think they may well live adjacent to the old Maher farm that was last owned by Mick and Peg Maher who would have been my uncle and aunt. My grandfather was John Maher married to Catherine Healy and my great-grandfather was Patrick Maher married to Catherine Lacey. I can't get back further than that but would still appreciate any fill in info you might have. I would love to find out about the early days of the existing farm.

Her name was Martha Healy/Martha Gibbons, born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada 1834. I don't know where the Gibbons name comes from except her husband's sister in Bermuda married a Richard Gibbons.
Hello Betty,

Thanks for this. Who knows about kinship? I do recall my father (John Maher son of John, grandson of Patrick and grand nephew of Jeremiah in this Census all of Uskerty) saying that there were no other Maher relations around. I am most interested in the "widow Maher" and the six or seven children that left on assisted emigration in 1847 probably to Canada. This group have to be related to my Uskerty family but it is not easy to track without a name and destination.

Keep on digging, and thanks!

Kathy (also looking at Healy family and Lacey)

Think Moate St is in the townland of Ballyragget. This was one of seven streets in this townland part of the census.
Betty

Hello Betty. Thanks for the picture. She is not related to us as far as I can tell. The Jeremiah in the 1901 Census is my grand uncle (brother to my g-grandfather Patrick Maher of Uskerty). Jeremiah was living with his sister Mary at the time and she died in 1904.

I have no real info about searches in Halifax. My search has been strictly in Ireland apart from some dabbling in the Emigrations from Castlecomer in 1847. I have had NO success with that but hear that there may be some work released soon such as the Wandesforde records. No real knowledge though. Keep you posted.

Kathy

Hello Kathy,

I have a cousin in Coolcullen, Co Kilkenny. Another cousin took us to the cousin in Coolcullen. On the way we stopped at this bar, ran by Mrs Maher. There was one other person there. His name was Mick. Didn't get his last name. This was about 1977, and he was maybe middleage. Think they said his wife died. I don't know if he was related to Mrs Maher. We left the bar and continued on to Coolcullen, nearby. Later on Mick showed up to visit. Coolcullen, Uskerty and Knocknaguppoge are all close to each other. I don't know the exact name of the village the bar is in. All I can say is it is near Coolcullen. Hope you have a map of Kilkenny. There are several available on the Kilkenny internet site.

In the Kilkwnny census for Muckalee 1901 in Uskerty there is a Jeremiah Maher.

I'll respond again. Betty

I visited the Catholic church in Muckalee, also nearby. It, St Brendans, is the Parish of Muckalee Church, and serves the little towns/villages nearby. In the graveyard next to the church I saw several headstones that said Coogan of Uskerty.

Hello Betty,
Thanks for the reply. I thought I was responding to another posting but must be getting confused. You do not say where you came upon this Mrs Maher in a pub but there is no-one of that description in this family that I am aware of. The Maher farm in in Uskerty adjacent to a family of Coogan. The last owners that I am aware of were Mick and Peg Maher (nee Whelan). I am not sure if the Coogan family now have possession of this farm. I know it was falling into disrepair. The Condren family in Uskerty are related cousins.

You can e-mail me at kathyclare@shaw.ca. I am in Vancouver Canada. Where are you?

I don't know of any connection yet, but have heard that name, Maher. Late 1970s, I was at a small bar with a cousin that was run by Mrs Maher. She may have been in her late 80s. The bar was in one room at the end of her house, had a fireplace in it and about two old wooden chairs. She said she remembered my mother who grew up in Knocknaguppoge which is nearby (Kilkenny County). I have a picture of her in front of this bar. If you'd like me to scan it to you, if I can find it, send me your email address. Betty

Hello. It appears that you are directly related to the Coogans of Uskerty and I was wondering if you had any knowledge of the Maher family nearby.

Thanks for your reply. Do you have any information on siblings for your James Coogan. He may be a brother of my Judith Coogan. Betty

William Coogan was born about 1850 to James Coogan and Mary Byrne/Byrnes/Burns. His death certificate states he was born in Isrothy which we have interpreted as Uskerty. He died in Australia in 1898. He had an older brother, Patrick who also died in Australia in 1914.

Not sure my reply to your question was clear. My reply June 16 outlines my Coogan connection. Hope it answers the question. We sure have Coogan ancestors in the same area. Just, how do we connect. I bet we do somewhere. Betty
