Hi Vicky

Marcellus Cook was born in Martha's Vineyard 1866 ( not 1867 as other have said. ) - he is registered inaccurately under the Martha's vineyard Chilmark Census of 1880 as Marcellus ( Poole ? illegible ) aged 14 - farm labourer - Indian. He came to New Zealand on the Barque Swallow in 1882 aged 16 - so the dates tally. Finding his father and mother is proving difficult.. Have information on him if you want it still. He is my grandaughters great great grandfather too on her Maori side.

You may already have what you need however

Hi Maggie
Full name Marcellus Horatio Cook
Marcellus first wife - Hilda Strongman ( two children Alphonso and Christina) Second wife Mary Mahonga Otene/ ( eight children - I think theres a Paddy in there but the whakapapa is not with me at present so will get let you know when I get it back) He had a third wife also but I dont have full details on that.

He identifies his father as Sadius (Thaddeus) Cook ( Nova Scotian ) his mother as Christina Cook ( half caste American Indian) But the Nova Scotian bit may not be correct. Marcellus may have claimed colonial parentage to gain citizenship to NZ. Have some leads but very woolly at this stage although am pretty certain he was illegitimate and that his father was Wampanoag Indian from Martha's vineyard. His mother possibly Christina Johnson - a mullato servant from Martha's Vineyard But there' s no clear connection yet for that one either.

Will forward you the other info when I get it back

And thanks for the info

Since posting my original messages I have done an intensive search for documentation.

From my Son in Law - Rangi Cook ( Marcellus G Grandson) and his Uncle Gilbert ( Gilly) Cook of Kerikeri ( since deceased ) I have a full family tree and copies of marriage and birth certificates pertaining to the Mary Mahanga Otene - Marcellus Cook marriage. I also have Copies of Marcellus signed declaration and application for NZ Citizenship in which he cites his parents, wives and children - He was aged 71 at the time.

The information I have, Ngapuhi historical records and Marcellus own signed declarations are a little different from the information you have but it is probable that the names have been abbreviated or anglicised and that they are in fact the same people - or that he did, indeed have several de facto wives undeclared ! It is highly likely that Marcellus had a de facto wife before Hilda Strongman - as he was taken into hiding after he jumped ship and family rumour says that he had a couple of children before he married her. Hilda was the wife of his best friend who died at an early age asking Marcellus to marry Hilda and look after her.

In his signed declaration for citizenship Marcellus cites his first wife as Hilda Strongman by whom he had two children - Alphonso and Christina. He cites his second wife as Mary Mahanga Otene from whom he says he had eight children living. He cites those eight children as Ellen Thompson - Lineas John, Thomas, Louis, William Otene, Maud, LeRoy, Mary. My son in law is the grandson of Mary Cook.

Hope this helps. Will be interested to know if the names you have are indeed the same people.

Paula

Kia ora C.

I ran your info past the family who agree that the Maori names are the same people as those cited by Marcellus.

I also went back through my notes and found evidence sent to me by Maggie that Marcellus first son was Patrick (Paddy ) to an ' Unknown Maori girl". Maggie is also whanau and a gg grandaughter of Paddy. Hilda was his first wife in ' common law' only.

Thank you for all this info. It has helped clarify the whakapapa which I am putting together for Rangi and my mokopuna.

If you would like any further information that I might have I am happy to help

Kia Kaha

Paula
