Re: Louis P. Cooke, 1811-1849

From Texas Handbook Online

COOKE, LOUIS P. (1811-1849). Louis P. Cooke, early Texas legislator, son of George W. and Jemina W. Cooke of Sharpsburgh, Bath County, Kentucky, was born in Tennessee in 1811. The was the oldest of three sons. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point but did not graduate. In 1835 he joined a New York volunteer battalion under command of Edwin Morehouse.qv The battalion did not arrive in time for the battle of San Jacinto,qv but Cooke was elected lieutenant colonel in the Texas army in 1836. As a member of the Third Congress from Brazoria, he was an adherent of Mirabeau B. Lamar.qv He served as secretary of the navy under Lamar from May 1839 until December 1841 and was elected to the Sixth Congress from Travis County. Cooke introduced the Homestead Exemption Law and was a member of the committee that chose Austin for the capital. In company with John Nolan and George Barrett, Cooke was involved in a shooting scrape in downtown Austin with Capt. Mark B. Lewis.qv Nolan was killed, and a friend of Nolan accidentally shot and killed Alex Peyton, who tried to stop the affray. Lewis fled, but was killed later by Cooke and Barrett. Judge R. E. B. Baylorqv issued a warrant for Cooke and Barrett, charging them with Lewis's murder. Cooke retained James S. Mayfieldqv to defend him, and the trial moved to Bastrop. The jury was deadlocked with all but one of twelve finding Cooke guilty. Cooke escaped in December 1843 before a second trial could be held and went to Corpus Christi, where he obtained employment as a brickmaker with John A. F. Gravis, a friend and fellow Lamar partisan. During the Comanche raid on Corpus Christi 1844, Cooke was wounded with an arrow in the side of his head and lost an eye. When the Mexican Warqv broke out he accompanied the United States Army under Gen. Zachary Taylorqv to the Rio Grande. He later built a house in Brownsville. He and his wife, Mary, died of cholera during the 1849 epidemic there, leaving four children.

BIBLIOGRAPHY: William S. Speer and John H.
Arthur Langford Cooke 1764-1834 London, Ireland and India

Hi Folks,

I'm in search of any information about this Arthur Langford Cooke who is proving to be a fascinating but elusive fellow.

I can find that he was born around 1764, probably in Ireland, and most likely part of one of the two main Cooke families there which included a number of leading politicians. Two of his nephews are known to have been born in Ireland which helps confirm this.

He entered the British East India Company service in 1780 however did not stay there for very long. His two nephews, however also joined that army and their sign-up documents give me some information about him.

I have him living at 55 Welbeck Street, London in 1813 and at Baker Street, London, in 1814. He later lived at 22 Dorset St, Portman Square, London… these addresses being quite close.

According to wills and some correspondence he had a number of fascinating friends, including leading politicians and barristers. Notable among these were:

Sir Theophilus Metcalfe, Governor-General of Bengal
Thomas Reynolds, an early British spy
Rev Edward Arthur Litton (his godson) a leading church reformer
The Marquis de Falaiseau, a French nobleman in exile and counter-revolutionary
William Franklin, the last Colonial Governor of New Jersey and son of Benjamin Franklin.

Arthur Langford Cooke died in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, in 1835 leaving his estate to his nephew, also named Arthur Langford Cooke (my ancestor) who was a Brigadier in the East India Company in India.

If anyone has any possible information about him or possible family.

Thanks,

Stuart Anderson

Hi -
I wonder if we have a connection. My grandfather, John Moses Eastham, was named after his maternal grandfather, Moses Cook(e), a shoemaker born in Penwortham who moved to Preston, married Ellen Duxbury, and had a number of children, among whom was my great-grandmother, Margaret Ann Cook(e). I noticed that your family used the Hebrew names of Zacharia, Abraham and Miriam, and wondered if my Moses was somehow connected to your family....

Moses Cook(e), b. 1821 in Penwortham, d. Apr 1887 in Preston. Son of Thomas Cooke (b. 1786 in Hutton or Ashton, Lancashire) and his wife Margaret (b. abt 1791 in Lancashire). Moses is said to have been a Quaker. He married Ellen Duxbury (b. 1819 in Ribchester, dau of Thomas and Ann [Merryman] Duxbury).

The birth date may be correct for James A. COOKE, but he was 28 in 1850, 37 in 1860, and 46 in 1870. Obituary said he was 56 at death in Aug. 1881, but the cemetery says 57. Take your pick! He was most likely born in Kentucky. His first wife was Susannah HAY.

The FamilySearch pilot site has Texas death records. John Bunyan COOKE (9 Je. 1855, WI - 13 Dec. 1934, Nederland, Jefferson Co., TX, son of James COOKE & S. HAY) was survived by wife Louise {sic, Lucinda}. He died of apoplexy & arteriosclerosis, was bu. Magnolia Cem., Beaumont, TX. Informant was J. B. COOKE, Jr.

Lucinda's death certificate lists her as Louie J. COOKE (15 July 1861, OH - 8 Apr. 1948, Nederland, TX). She died of cardiac failure & essential hypertension. Her parents are listed as Sylvester GRAVES, b. Ohio, & Elizabeth EVANS, b. Ohio. Informant Mrs. Lawrence KOELEMAY, Shreveport, LA. The father should have been listed as Henry Sylvester "Wes" GROVES.

James A. COOKE was son of James COOK[E] (1798, TN - 17 May 1853, bu. Horse Creek Cem., Cotton Hill T., Sangamon Co., IL. James m2. 26 Feb. 1837, Clay Co., IL, Rebecca _ ELLIOTT, b. ca. 1800, NC. They were of Sangamon Co., 6 Nov. 1852, when they sold land in Section 13, the west half of the northeast quarter, Twp. 2 N, R. 6 E., Clay Co., IL, to David PETTYJOHN.

Ms. Hopkins--I just came across this posting on Charles Brewer with your offer to send a photocopy of the three-page bio to anyone interested. Does the offer still stand? I'm doing research on the Brewer family of Annapolis, Maryland, of which Charles was a member, and this piece would be an enormous help.

My email address is mparker@usna.edu.

Thanks for your help,
