This is what I have so far on Kentucky Cooleys, most of whom descend from VA or SC. Trying to connect the dots frizzles the brain. There is a good Cooley genealogical page online at http://www.ancestraldata.com/ahnentafel/256/. Additionally, there are these southern Cooley clans on record but I'm not sure are connected to our line (sent to me email, my guess = chart attributed to Otis Barnes Cooley) =

While the fire was burning, friends came to call and discovered the body of Mrs. Cooley which was removed from the smokehouse. The negro woman was hanged. During the Civil war while returning with his livestock through the Shenandoah Valley, hiding along the way from Yankee soldiers, he met Martha J. Rhodes, a daughter of Syrus Rhodes and Elizabeth Armentrout. On the 16 of August 1866, they were married at the home of Syrus Rhodes, with a large number of friends in attendance. After the wedding they returned via Valley Pike to Belle Grove. A reception was held that night with three hundred persons present. p.272, FHL #31383, a deed dated 5 Jan 1807 where Peter Cooley

to a Richard Halliday. Perhaps this Peter and Joseph were brothers.
(Frederick County, Virginia land deeds, Book 62, Page 214, FHL #31399)

Greenup County, KY Deeds 1811-1908, FHL #343999 Boyd County (including Catlettsburg) was created from Greenup County in 1860.

In the above Greenup County deeds, there was a Charles and John Cooley who seem to have arrived in the county in 1840. They appear together on at least two deeds that I saw in the index. Checking the census, I found Charles in Greenup in 1840, but he seems to have died before 1850. I found John there in 1850 & 1860, and then in Lawrence Co. Ohio in 1870, working as an ore miner. He is the father of Edmund and Isham (also reported as Edward and Isaac), and he was born in Virginia. In 1860, there are two John Cooleys in Boyd County, both the same age, both in Catlettsburg, both born in Virginia. One is this father of Edmund and Isham, and the other is the husband of Elizabeth, father of Norman and Charles (who was mistaken for Peter). There must be a connection here between these two families! Was John visiting Elizabeth at census time? Consider also the name Charles.

There is a Cooley I don't know where to place but I believe belongs in our family tree (possiby a sister of Peter P. Cooley who married Elizabeth Steele) =

Dorcas Cooley b abt 1815 VA who married 20 May 1832 John Criner b abt 1815, son of Elizabeth Griffey.
Frederick County Marriage Bonds, by Joan D. Hackett & Rebecca D. Good, FHL #975.5992 V2h, p.208
"19 May 1832 John Criner, son of Elizabeth Griffy, & Darcus Cooley. Bondsman, Elizabeth Griffy."

Frederick County, Virginia land deeds, Book 62, Page 214, FHL #31399
"This indenture made the 10th day of January in the year 1834. Between John Criner and Dorcas his wife of Frederick County, Virginia of the one part, and Abraham Miller of the same county and state of the other part. Witnesseth: That the said John Criner and dorcas his wife for and in consideration of the sum of fifty dollars...in hand paid by the said Abraham Miller...confirm unto the said Abraham Miller...certain real estates of which Peter Cooley father of the said Dorcas dec'd siezed, lying in the village of Slab Town (?) in the County of Frederick..."

Frederick County, Virginia land deeds, Book 64, Page 92, FHL #31400
"This indenture made this 4th day of May in the year 1835. Between John Criner and Dorcas his wife of the one part and Abraham Miller of the other part. Witnesseth that the said John Criner and Dorcas his wife for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred dollars...in hand paid by the said Abraham Miller...confirm unto the said Abraham Miller...a certain piece or parcel of land lying in Frederick County containing half an acre more or less being property inherited by the said Dorcus from her father Peter Cooley lying near the town of Winchester..."

Frederick County, Virginia land deeds, Book 65, Page 452, FHL #31401
"This indenture made this 27th day of Dec. 1836. Between John Criner and Dorchus his wife of the one part, I & W.G. Russell of the other part. Witnesseth, That John Criner for and in consideration of five dollars...in hand paid by the said I & W.G. Russell...confirm unto the said I & W.G. Russell...a certain lot of land lying...in the town or village of Slab Town (?)...property of which Peter Cooly dec'd seized..."

Note: There is a Slabtown over on the James River.
(Since Dorcas inherited the land, does that mean she was an only child?)

This letter was in Rhoda's possession, presumably amongst her father Harry's things which came to her upon his death. Harry must have had it from his mother (Elizabeth = Lizzy?) or his father Peter.

Curiously, in Winchester, Frederick co VA
the 1840 census lists John's household with girl between ages of 5 and 10, and a woman between 40 and 50.
the 1850 census lists Dorcas age 51 (b 1799) with John age 35 (b 1815), no children living wth them.
the 1860 census lists Dorcus age 45 (b 1815) with John age 45, no children living with them.
the 1870 census lists Kriner, Dorcas age 72 (b 1798), John age 56 (b 1814), Longmarsh, Clark co VA
the 1880 census lists Dorcas age 85 (b 1797) with John age 75.
Apparently Lizey (Elizabeth?) was an only child and lived away from her parents at age 15.

NOTE: Chrutley Cooley, age 16 (= b 1834), in the 68th district Wythe County, VA 1850 census, son of Frances (sic) & Sarah Cooley. Francis age 48 (= b 1802), Sarah age 47, dtrs Wanda age 21 (= b 1829), Mary age 18 (= b 1832). All born in NC.

p. 444 Peter Cooley, 1778-8 April 1832

Coincidence of this Peter dying in 1832 and Dorcas selling the land of her deceased father Peter Cooley in 1834, but there is no provable connection.
