There were lots of Bartholomew Coombes in Hatherleigh which is a small village in N. Devon. One of the Coombe females married Philip Gidley King who was an early Governor of Australia. If you can send a message to me at my user name rather than the message board, giving dates etc. It will be easier to help you. I suggest that your Matherleigh is most likely a mistake in a Census, try looking at the original page.

Hi,
I have sent you an invite to my tree. I have been in contact with Cyril Coombe in the past, who I believe is your father's brother. I know he was very old, is he still well and doing the family tree? I sent him a CD of scanned family photo's, have you seen it?

Hi, I have come across Simon and Grace but am not sure where they fit in my tree. Is it possible for me to view your tree, or is the information not on line. I have built a tree which contains Hatherleigh Coombe's but as there are so many Bartholomews and Williams a lot of it is guess work based on parish records and until I have time to re-visit the records office in Devon to look for Wills etc., that may give me the needed information I am unable to link this part to my ggg grandfather Bartholomew who moved from Hatherleigh to Exeter at about the turn of the Century (1800). Any help would be great. Thanks

Have sent an invite to both trees, you will need to search for John Coombe born Exeter 1812 and work back for the Stephens/Coombe tree. The other one as I said is not completely reliable as yet, just made up from Parish Records at the Devon Records Office and on line records and educated guesses.

Hi Leonie
Yes, I really would appreciate access to the info. I must have incorrect information as, like you, I have ancestors who used the same names, but for me are a century or so apart. Very, very confusing.

Hi,
I have lots of information, but, I have been unable to tie it with my own tree. The overuse of certain names and the fact that many are registered in the parish records of the ordinary church and again in the dissenting church records, often with close dates of christening, so they could be two individuals from closely related families or one person, is very confusing. As a result I have two trees: Coombe Family tree link (guessed relationships) and Stephens/Coombe nearly all verified, if not, a note is attached. If you would like to access these trees please send a request and I'll open them for you.

Leonie - gidday
I am researching William Coombe of Hatherleigh, born 1665, son of Bartholemew. My relationship comes through Bartholemew's gggg grand daughter Mary Coombe, born 1826 who married John Kelly in Auckland, NZ - her family emigrated to NZ around 1840. I have listed the family line below. From William Coombe (1695) I have no other information, apart from the year of birth and possibly the first name of their wives. I have no information re Bartholemew apart from a possible year of birth. I am hoping I can pad up my information. Cheers/Mihi
I live in Conifer Grove, Papakura, Auckland, NZ. I am on the Genes Reunited website as well.
Bartholemew C1635
William 1665
William 1695
William 1742
Thomas 1768
William 1795
Mary Kelly (nee Coombe)1826

Hi Will, I am the great grandaughter of Charles and Catherine.
My Grandmother was Ethel Bridget Coombe born 1909.

I have seen the registration of Herbert & Bridget's marriage with Bridget's surname as Bower, but as you said other info within the family has stated that her surname was Power, including her death certificate. So, I thought that with accents, interpretations & illeteracy maybe the marriage certificate was wrong. As I do not have any info on her parents except that her father was Thomas, I had no way of knowing (for sure) which was correct.
Thank you for the clarification. Do you have any other info on Thomas & ? Bower ?

From your name, can I assume that you are the son of Uncle "Mick" ?

My e-mail address is juliespascoe@hotmail.com
if you would prefer direct contact.

Hi Julie.

I am a grandson of Charles Coombe and Catherine Mary Ablett. My records show that Charles Coombe was born 1867 - according to me fathers information and Charles' headstone at Broken Hill Cemetary.

Also Herbert Coombe married Bridget Bower, her father Thomas 1797-1863 used the spelling Bowyer. It is unusal that within family records I have seen Bridget is referred to as Power and not bower - but their marriage certificate shows Bower.

I would be interested in any further information you have about the children, grandchildren etc of Herbert and Bridget.

regards

Will

Sorry I have taken so long to re-contact you. Did you live in Mulwala with your family. I have a feeling we may have met when my parents visited - which they did a on numerous times.

I can provide you with a few generations of Coombe family information. To get you started here is a simple outline:

Vernon Francis was the son of Charles Coombe 1867-1932 and Catherine Mary Ablett 1871-1934.He was one of 12 children - 11 boys and one girl - all now dead.

If you want to give me your email I can give you more information, and give you access to my Family Tree. I am the youngest son of Harold Coombe, Vernon's youngest brother.

From what I know of this family the father is John Henry Coombe and mother is Frances Agnes Midlane. John Henry is listed as a Reverend. I cannot find him on Birth records. The census says Russell was born in Wilton, Wilshire, England. If this sounds like a possible match, email at klmoore1959@comcast.net

I do not have any information about Mary Coombe, but am wondering about John Gaffney. My great grandfather was Patrick Gaffney--he had a brother John. They were both in CA after living in MA for a time. Patrick married Bridget Gaffney (said to be no relation) and they moved to Idaho. Patrick and John had a sister Mary, and a brother, Frank. I do not know Patrick, John, Mary or Frank's parents. They were from Sligo, Ireland. (Parents and children) Patrick was born in 1825 in Sligo.
Thanks. Virginia

Concerns about DNA testing for genealogy

Regarding genealogical DNA testing, here's a little more information to help calm fears about insurance companies using DNA information against us:

May 21, 2008

President George W. Bush signed into law today the the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA). GINA - the first and only federal legislation that will provide protections against discrimination based on an individual's genetic information in health insurance coverage and employment settings.

"Today marks the beginning of a new era in health care," said Representative Louise Slaughter (D-NY). "Americans can finally take advantage of the tremendous potential of genetic research without the fear that their own genetic information will be used against them."

Just a few weeks ago, GINA received overwhelming support in both the Senate, with a unanimous vote of approval, and the House of Representatives, where the legislation was passed by a landslide vote of 414-1.

The health insurance protections offered by GINA are expected to roll out 12 months after the bill is signed, whereas the employment protections will be fully realized in 18 months.

Specifically, the legislation protects against genetic discrimination by health insurers or employers by:
Prohibiting group health plans and issuers offering coverage on the group or individual market from basing eligibility determinations or adjusting premiums or contributions on the basis of genetic information. They cannot request, require or purchase the results of genetic tests, or disclose genetic information.

Prohibiting issuers of Medigap policies from adjusting pricing or conditioning eligibility on the basis of genetic information. They cannot request, require or purchase the results of genetic tests, or disclose genetic information.

Prohibiting employers from firing, refusing to hire, or otherwise discriminating with respect to compensation, terms, conditions or privileges of employment. Employers may not request, require or purchase genetic information, and may not disclose genetic information. Similar provisions apply to employment agencies and labor organizations.

Everyone of us loses millions of skin cells every day, sheds hair (or get it cut), clip our nails, lick envelopes, and otherwise leave our DNA all over the landscape. We've been doing it all of our lives. If insurance companies wanted your DNA, they would have had it long ago.

Further, your name does not need to be associated with the test results in any way, if that's the way you want it done. You can collect the sample and then use only the surname to identify the sample. (FTDNA would like to keep the surname associated with the sample for research, but other information such as first and middle name, etc., can be left blank.)

The Coon/Coons/Coombs/etc., DNA research group is at FamilyTreeDNA.com There are 59 members and 30 have found a connection with another member. www.familytreedna.com/public/Coon
