Her married name is Coombes, not sure of her maiden name, I do believe her husband died in the '50's, his first name I believe was Reg, not sure of the year he was born. Have no idea when she was born, my dad did not talk very much of her.It took us a while to find out where abouts my dad was born, as he does not talk about his past, all we know is that he was born in a place just outside of London,I also think his dad was a captain on some sort of boat. The details are very far and few between!!! Thanks for any and all help!!!!

From the Delaware County Library's site you can search the Historic 1876-1977 issues of the Delaware County Daily Times. You don't need a library card to search the Daily Times but you do need a Delaware Co. Library card to search the other newspaper listed. Hope this helps.

http://www.delcolibraries.org

Hello Ivan,

Thank you for your speedy response to my request for help in tracing William Coombes.

Yes, I also noticed that in the 1911 cencus, but I disregarded that entry of Armstrong, as I decided that maybe that was his place of work, as he is down as macine opreator at an enginerring works and here in this part of Gateshead/Newcastle that was an engineering firm called Armstrong so I have put 1 and 1 together, but you have turned the light onto something more positive for me, ever since I started tracing William, the question that I always asked myself was"Why was he in Ireland?" and you seem to have answered that question for me, as I never knew that the army had barracks there, plus you also think that he may have been in the Northumberland Fusiliers, so thank you very much for that and I think that you are right that this is the William that I am looking for.

I have looked for him in the "Poplar" area for London, but I have always drawn a blank, I then tried looking in "Middlesex" for him and again I drew a blank, but at least you have now given me other roots that I can now look up. Sorry to say that I do not have a copy of his marriage, but I am trying to contact a relative of mine who I know, knows more about William, but he is being very elusive to say the least, but I will keep on trying.

Once again Ivan thank you very, very much for the infor that you have sent me, it means alot to me thank you.

John Coombes
Re: William Coombes

Hello John

In 1911 William, Jane and family were still in Gateshead and he gives his place of birth as Armstrong, London. I have not heard of such a place in London but the reference to London could suggest that his place of birth is more likely to be Poplar rather than Kingston. Also there are no likely birth records for a William Coombes in Kingston registration district 1855-65.

I notice that his son Henry was born in Mullingar Ireland. This suggests that William could have been in the Army as there was a British Army Barracks at Mullingar.

There is this 1881 census record:

1881
RG11 Piece 1151 Folio 40 Page 18
1st Battalion 5th Fusiliers, Cambridge Barracks, Portsmouth
COOMBES, William, Soldier, Single, 23, Private born London, Middlesex

This could be “your” William because the 1st Battalion 5th Fusiliers (at that time, I believe, known as the 1st Battalion, The Northumberland Fusiliers) were in Ireland in 1882.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a service record for William.

Do you have a marriage certificate for William? A possible marriage is William Coombs to Jane Robinson at Portsea Registration district in the 3rd quarter of 1881. The certificate should give you William’s father’s name which will help you to trace William’s birth. There are quite a few possibilities for his birth in London but without a father’s name it will be difficult to find him.

Regards

Ivan
He was my great great grandfather and was married to an Elizabeth Wright and had several children, one of which is Joseph A Coombes who was my great grandfather. I do notice on the census' that it looks like John Coombes was in the Taunton, MA mental ward from approx 1870 til his death. Any information at all would be helpfull!!!

William Coombes

I am trying to trace my family tree, all I know is that William Coombes (poplar or Kingston upon Thames)married a Jane Robinson (Gilling, Richmond, Yorshire, some how or other they ended up in Mulligar in Ireland where their first child was Henry J, they then left Ireland and moved to Seaham Harbour in County Durham before they finally settled in Gateshead. All my attempts to find any of his family or to find anything have ended in a blank, he did gave Poplar as his place of birth in the 1891 cencus, but in the 1901 cencus he somehow changed it to Kingston upon Thames, I estimate the year of his birth around the 1859/60 mark and I also think that his father's name was Henry James but like I say all my efforts to find this out have drawn a blank, can anyone please help me, any help no matter how small will be gratefully received and acted on!

Hi - I think we just contacted each other on the genes connected site.

We are both descended from George Coombes (c 1730) and Anne Edmeades (1729), who lived in Swanscombe in Kent, and also in Stone-next-Dartford.. Your Robert was his grandson, son of Thomas Coombes b 1769 in Stone - next Dartford, and wife Ann. My Thomas Couchman Coombes(1804) was son of George and Anne's son George(1769) and Judith Ralph, so they were cousins!

There is a very good resource for the Medway region of Kent called CityArk, and all the parish records have been scanned and are free to view online.

I have been researching my great great grandfather, Robert(William, I think)Coombes born 1803 in Swanscombe, Kent, died in Milton, near Gravesend, in 1858. I have come across the name, Thomas, born 1804, and I had wondered if they could be brothers. However, there are so many with the surname Coombes in that area of Kent. Son of Robert, George (Robert) , born 1839; his son, Alfred William, born February 1871; his son Geroge Alfred, born 1895. Both Alfred and George Alfred were born in South London, to where the family had moved from Kent, Peckham initially and then Camberwell. Are we related? I have looked at the existing list for Alfred`s children and cannot see, my uncle Frank. Would love to hear from you.
