Yss, they are Wilkerson's parents, which is one of the reasons that I believe there is a strong possibility Parthena is one of Enoch and Delilah's children. I have not been able to find Parthena's name on any other records besides the census records that she is on with Wilkerson and family. In my personal opinion, all of the circumstantial evidence would seem to point at Parthena being the daughter of Enoch and Delilah; I just don't want to jump to a conclusion based on circumstantial evidence.

I have not been able to locate a death certificate for either her or Wilkerson, which has further impeded my search since I don't have an estimated death date. I have searched for possible burial locations on a findagrave.com, but can't find anything there either. I'm not certain if they may have been buried in a personal burial plot; there is no record of them in the same cemetery with their children.

Maybe I'll have time someday to go home to Meade County and search through local recorda and to visit the Parr-Frans Cemetery to see if they are buried there but just not recorded on findagrave.com (even though that cemetery appears to be very well documented).

If you should ever happen to come across any evidence that would support my theory, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I don't have a name for the female child born about 1825 to Enoch L. Coomes and Delilah Roby. Here is my note attached to her circa 1825 birth entry: "Will of grandfather Enoch T. Coomes mentions his two grandchildren, children of son Enoch, deceased. The 1830 census entry for widow Delilah also shows two children in her household, although the age category for the male (10-15 years old) appears to be incorrect. The other child was female, under age 5."
Delilah and Joseph Coomes married in 1832 and were in Meade County, KY for the 1850 census. I wonder if any records for their children Robert, George or Benedick Joseph may refer to siblings who were Enoch L's children? Before sending this I looked at the 1850 Meade County census for Joseph and Delilah again. They were living at household 733, while a George King and wife Nancy lived at household 734. Any relationship to your Wilkerson Montgomery King?

Do you have any information that would prove / disprove if Enoch Coomes and Delilah Roby had a daughter named Parthena Coomes (born around 1825)? She married Wilkerson Montgomery King of Meade County. I am trying to locate Parthena's parents, and all of the circumstantial evidence points to Delilah and Enoch as possibly being her parents, but I haven't found anything concrete. I was hoping you might have run across Parthena in your research, as she almost definitely appears to have been born in Nelson County. Thanks.

I am looking for information on Parthena Coomes, who was born in Nelson County around 1825. She married by 3rd great grandfather, Wilkerson Montgomery King, and later lived in Meade County. Through my scouring of available online records, I believe there is a possibility that she may have been the daughter of Delilah Roby and Enoch Coomes. However, I have not been able to find any information that would definitively establish this link.

From the 1840 census, there is a Mrs. D. Coomes (who I believe to be the Delilah Roby, the widow of Enoch Coomes), with two young children including a daughter who would be about the right age. Since there were no names on the 1830 census records, I can't be certain this daughter was Parthena. Delilah shows up again in Meade County on the 1850 census remarried to Joseph Coomes, by who she had 3 children. There do not appear to be any children from her first marriage still living with her at that time, as the ages of all the children at home were born after she remarried Joseph Coomes (for which I have located the marriage record).

The reason that I believe Delilah could be the mother of Parthena is due to the fact that Delilah and Joseph, and their children, appear directly next to the parents of Wilkerson Montgomery King (Parthena's husband) on the 1850 census. It could simply be coincidence, but all of the pieces seem to fit. I'm just looking for that one elusive piece of data that will prove or disprove that Delilah and Enoch were Parthena's parents.

If you have any information that might help me figure this out, I would greatly appreciate it.

I am decended from Richard Coomes b. 1653 in Stratford, Warrickshire, England and Ann Shircliffe, through their son Richard Thomas Coomes. My great-great-great grandmother was Parthena Coomes (I have seen several different spellings). She was born in Nelson County in 1825, married Wilkerson Montgomery King, and moved to Meade County. I have not been able to locate Parthena's parents. I believe that the Owensboro Coomes originated in Nelson County, based on what I have been able to determine during my efforts to locate Parthena's parents, so I was wondering if you might have any information on a Parthena Coomes in your information. Thomas Coombs is the father of Francis Ignatius Coomes. Thoimas Coombs married Elizabeth Warton and they had 10 children. Thomas Coombs father was Richard Coombs, b.1653 in Stratford, Warrickshire, England. He married Ann Shircliffe. Hope this helps. Sandra

Thomas J. Coomes died Sunday, June 27, 2010, at his home in North Canton, Ohio surrounded by his family. He was 80.

Tom was married to his wife, Helen, for 56 years, and their family has grown to include children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was proud of how much love his family shares.

Tom was born April 24, 1930, in Louisville, Kentucky. He was one of 18 children of William and Mary Coomes.

As a child, Tom moved with his family to Alabama and later to Ohio. He was introduced to his future wife at a dance at the Slovak Club in Canton, Ohio. He married Helen in 1953 at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Canton.
He was drafted to the Army in 1955 and was stationed at Fort Polk in Louisiana and Fort Benning in Georgia, where he trained as a medic. After his military service, Tom and Helen moved to their home in North Canton, where they raised four children, Karen, Michael, Mary Ellen, and Patricia.
In 1959, he opened his own fiberglass fabricating business, U.S. Fiberglass Products Inc., in Middlebranch.
During fishing season, Tom spent weekends with his family and friends on his boat in Lake Erie, catching walleye and perch.
Tom had a larger-than-life personality. At the end of a conversation, he would often say, ``Behave yourself. And if you don't, call me, and I'll come help.'
He was generous and hospitable to his large family and to his friends and neighbors, and he loved good food. He was always busy in his kitchen, roasting a prime rib or simmering homemade soup. He and Helen hosted a fish fry each year and served the fish caught on his boat. During growing season, the back of his truck was full of baskets of vegetables that he tended carefully in his expansive garden, and he shared tomatoes, peppers, corn, squash, and beans with everyone he came across.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; his children and their spouses, Karen Luster of Canton, Ohio; Michael and Andrea Coomes of North Canton, Mary Ellen and Tom Fetrow of Canton, Patricia and Ricky Loudin of Ona, West Virginia; grandchildren Benjamin (Gina) Luster, Adam (Janet) Luster, Joshua (Erika) Luster, Jennifer (Christopher) Rohrer, Jessica (Anthony) Coomes, Stephanie Coomes, Bradley Fetrow, Douglas (Sarah) Fetrow, Kathryn Fetrow, Thomas Loudin, and Anna Loudin; great-grandchildren Trystan, Xavier, Adam Jr., Paige, Mason, Preston, Max, Juliana, Tori, and Courtney; brothers, Joseph ``Buddy' (Judy) and Ted (Beverly); sister, Joan (Tom) Akins; sisters-in-law, MinnieRee, Mary Ann, Edna, Ellen, and Pam; and many loved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary (Shircliff); brothers, William C., Richard, Joseph E., William W., Leonard, James, Robert, Edward, and Kenneth; and sisters, Mary (Herman) Kline, Frances (Paul) Adolph, Martha (Edward) Karg, E. Bernadette Coomes, and Angela Ernst.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 noon Thursday, July 1, at Saint Paul Catholic Church in North Canton, Ohio. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Memory Gardens.
Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 30, at Reed Funeral Home North Canton, 801 Pittsburg Ave. N.W. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Stark County, Ohio

My gggrandfather was James Tucker Coomes b. 1817 Maryland, shows up in Virginia in 1843 to Mary Elizabeth Dunford. Don't know where he was between his birth and 1843. His father was suposedly a sailor and was shipwrecked. James first son was named william. Do you have any similar stories in your family history?

Ok I'm getting some place.
As of right now I'm just working on Male line of Coomes.

From me there is my father Marvin Coomes.
His dad Walter Samuel Coomes DOB: 21 Nov 1918
then William Samuel Coomes DOB: 13 Jan 1887
then I find Wiliam Coomes DOB: DOB: NOV 1834

From there I get lost again, I find Wiliam Coomes at age 40 in a cenus with his partents I think but I'm not sure.

My Father is Marvin Coomes, mother is Joyce Ann Coomes (maiden of Bovard) I know my mothers line goes back to the Midwest. My father is from a large family but I have very little information on his siblings or parents. Any help would be helpful. Currently we have lived in Washington State and my mother’s dad and mom lived in Oregon.

Concerns about DNA testing for genealogy

Regarding genealogical DNA testing, here's a little more information to help calm fears about insurance companies using DNA information against us:

May 21, 2008

"President George W. Bush signed into law today the the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA). GINA - the first and only federal legislation that will provide protections against discrimination based on an individual's genetic information in health insurance coverage and employment settings.

"Today marks the beginning of a new era in health care," said Representative Louise Slaughter (D-NY). "Americans can finally take advantage of the tremendous potential of genetic research without the fear that their own genetic information will be used against them."

Just a few weeks ago, GINA received overwhelming support in both the Senate, with a unanimous vote of approval, and the House of Representatives, where the legislation was passed by a landslide vote of 414-1.

The health insurance protections offered by GINA are expected to roll out 12 months after the bill is signed, whereas the employment protections will be fully realized in 18 months.

Specifically, the legislation protects against genetic discrimination by health insurers or employers by:
Prohibiting group health plans and issuers offering coverage on the group or individual market from basing eligibility determinations or adjusting premiums or contributions on the basis of genetic information. They cannot request, require or purchase the results of genetic tests, or disclose genetic information.

Prohibiting issuers of Medigap policies from adjusting pricing or conditioning eligibility on the basis of genetic information. They cannot request, require or purchase the results of genetic tests, or disclose genetic information.

Prohibiting employers from firing, refusing to hire, or otherwise discriminating with respect to compensation, terms, conditions or privileges of employment. Employers may not request, require or purchase genetic information, and may not disclose genetic information. Similar provisions apply to employment agencies and labor organizations."

Everyone of us loses millions of skin cells every day, sheds hair (or get it cut), clip our nails, lick envelopes, and otherwise leave our DNA all over the landscape. We've been doing it all of our lives. If insurance companies wanted your DNA, they would have had it long ago.

Further, your name does not need to be associated with the test results in any way, if that's the way you want it done. You can collect the sample and then use only the surname to identify the sample. (FTDNA would like to keep the surname associated with the sample for research, but other information such as first and middle name, etc., can be left blank.)

Julian/Julia Ann Dirickson was the name of Richard R. Coomes wife. She was the daughter of Isaiah Dirickson and Hester Cropper. Julia and Richard married 16 May 1834, Green Co., KY. Julia's brother, Isaiah, married Harriet Lively 1829 also in Green Co.

Do you know if Claude was ever married to Lilly Gaffney and had a son named Raymond?
In the 1910 census Claude is living with his parents and shows to be married 1 time for 3 years.
Lilly Gaffney Coomes is living with her mother, Sarah Gaffney, with a son named Raymond. Lilly shows to be married 1 time for 3 years. It is my thought that Claude and Lilly may have been seperated at the time.

Two of my ROBY/ROBEY kin married sons of Enoch T. and Teresia STUART COOMES. Enoch T. was born 5 July 1765 in Charles Co., MD and migrated with his Kentucky pioneer father William COOMES. Enoch T. died in 1828. Among his children were three sons, Enoch, Ignatius and Joseph who married ROBY/ROBEY sisters.

Ignatius married Elizabeth C. ROBY in Feb 1819. Enoch married her sister Delilah ROBY in 1823, however Enoch died in 1825 or 1826. Delilah ROBY COOMES married Joseph COOMES in 1832.

I'd like to compare what I've learned about these families with what other COOMES researchers have found.

I have a Raymond Sylvester in my genealogy who married first, Jennie Davis then Ida Head in 1880 Jan. 7. He is listed as the son of Richard Raymond Coomes and Jullia Dickerson. I show him born in 1862 in West Louisville,Daviess Co. Ky. That is all I have on him. Would love the names of his children if you think it is the same Raymond Sylvester.

Melissa, My sister and I have been talking to H.Rumage who wrote the book"in the shadow of three lions". He has absolutely confirmed the fact that William Peter , son of William and Rachel is NOT the William Peter buried in St. Benedict cemetery at Beech Grove. He told us the story of how William Peter's father was a bonded servant and apparently bonded to a real tyrant, so William Peter ran away. From that point on, he seems to have been everywhere.I told him that I was the granddaughter of Noah Francis Coomes and he said that William Peter buried at Beech Grove is my Great Great Grandfather. He told me some interesting stories about William's son and an interesting story about his death year. Much to my regret, it seems you are right about William & Rachel. Mr. Rumage has been researching the Coomes family since he was 18 yrs old. Carolyn

We now know that Silva Coombs was born as per Mells Parish Registers as follows:- "Silvy, daughter of John &
Elizabeth COOMBS, baptised 3rd August 1780". This also fits in with her death certificate and the 1851 and 1861 Census for Southgate which stated that she came from Mells in Somerset. We are looking for the marriage of Joseph Auty who moved down from Huddersfield in Yorkshire to Southgate Middlesex to Silva Coombs. Sometime between 1802 and 1805 as their first child was born in 1805. Can you help?.

Any help would be appreciated.

We have now found Silva Coomes did not come from Yorkshire, but from Mells in Somerset. We are still looking for the marriage of Joseph Auty to Silva Coomes marriage around 1802. They settled in Southgate, Middlesex and brought up their children. They were living at theChase Gate Public House until they died in 1861 and Joseph the son took over until he died in 1890- If anyone has information on the marriage of Joseph and Silva, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Beverley, Jessie was my step-grandmother, married to my grandfather, Charles Clayton Lenfers, Sr. who was the son of George and Mary Lenfers, that is as far as I can take this line. My grandfather's first wife, my mom's mom was Anna Marie Rapp. I have that lineage but not my grandfather's. My understanding was that my great grandmother Mary A. (don't have maiden name) was Irish but I can't confirm this. I would love to have any Lenfers information that might be available as I have none past my grandfather's and he died in 1980. I can fill in the descendents and siblings of my grandfather as far a names and some dates, just getting started with this after finding my maternal grandmother's geneology records. My grandfather, Charles Clayton was and engineer for the CE & I Railroad and was the engineer of the first diesel engine that entered Evansville. He retired from the railroad in 1961.
