James~
I have been ignoring the COONEY queries which had a subject line "Sugar Notch" because my branch has no connection.
To answer your question, to the best of my knowledge there is no Martin COONEY in our line. My g grandmother Margaret (COONEY) FRIEL and her siblings who came out, were from Shraheen Achill Island County Mayo Ireland. They arrived in USA in 1864 - 1866. They were not of the "Dan" COONEY clan which came to Achill from Galway per the story I was told. My g g grandparents were Owen & Margaret (MCINTRYE)COONEY. The ones who came out to Cleveland, OH were Margaret (Peggy), Julia, Edward, John, Patrick.

Mary Ellen Chambers

Any help or guidance would be Greatly appreciated, Thank-you for your kindnesses & help. Peace, jim delaney.

Hi...I think you're doing a GREAT Service for us "Cooney" searchers...loooking for Cooney Family, because its hard sometimes...But I have a Great Grandfather by the name of "Martin Cooney"was a bricklayer or mason...born in Ireland anywhere between 1834-1843, his father was Peter COONEY and Mother was Margaret Dunn. I do not know what County he was from-Martin COONEY. I do not know what year he immigrated to America...BUT I have a "Feeling" he might have spent some time in the "Lancashire Region" of England because his future wife was born there...They both got married 07 Jan 1866 in Chicopee Falls, Hampden County, Massachusetts, USA. BTW my Great Grandmother was named "Martha a. Harrop" the both of them had 14 Children from 1867-1893. Martin Cooney died in 1894 and Martha died in 1917. THANK-YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP & KINDNESSES. Peace, jim delaney

Anyone out there know of the Cooney's from Carrickacrumin in County Cavan. I'm trying to look back to the early 1800's. My ggg-grandmother was Anna Cooney and she married James McCabe. They in turn had three children in the mid to late 1840's Anna, James and Peter McCabe. I believe Anna McCabe (nee Cooney) had at least one brother, Thomas, and one sister Bridget. Thomas married Anna Lynch and had at least nine children and Bridget would have married Bernard/Barney Lynch and they had five children.

If anyone can share any information on the Cooney's from Carrickacrumin I would greatly appreciate it.

Best Regards,

Tim Stewart

I am trying to find a great aunt, born Lydia Cooney, father John Cooney, mother, Ellen Donnelly Cooney from Arboe, and Coagh, and Upper Drumad, Tyrone.

Lydia emmigrated in 1902 at age 17 to Allegheny, PA to join her brother, Joseph. She married a King and at her brother John's funeral in 1935 in Cleveland OH, she is listed in the guest book along with a child, also Lydia King, and a Michael King who may have been her husband or son. 20 years later she is mentioned in her brother Edward's obit. in Albuquerque as his sister, "Lydia Rodgers, from Pittsburgh," so she must have remarried.

Anyone know of Lydia or other members of that family? I have info on 3 brothers,John, Peter, Edward and my grandfather, James, but not Joseph.

Hi,

Ancestry has the naturalization record database, so I don't think you need to pay the state of MA for records if you haven't already. Biggest problem is figuring out which person is the right one as so many have the same names in the same cities. I have 5 generations of John Cooneys and even girls are named after their mother or grandmother or aunt so it really gets time-consuming to match them.

My grandfather was James Cooney and his brothers were John, Joseph, Peter, and Edward. Some folks from Scotland contacted me on ancestry and said we were cousins. After 2 months of going back and forth, sharing info, I decided we couldn't be related because the b.dates didn't match and some of the kids had different names. But the Scots persisted and scanned a Memorial book from John Cooney III's funeral and there were his siblings in the cities I knew they had lived. It turns out that I was checking John III's family against John IV's.

John IV went back to Scotland where they had lived for awhile to marry his sweetheart and stayed. That is how I now have Scots cousins. 4 generations by now. They have sent me 3 generations of family wedding photos, John IV and V being in them. I've sent them parish birth records from Tyrone and my mother's wedding photo. It has been great fun getting to know them.

Through ancestry, I have also found my great uncle's family. His son is still alive, age 90, and I hope to visit him before he passes on. As it turns out, I had been to his sister's house when my mother was visiting,in 1966 and met his granddaughter as well, but had forgotten how they were related. They live about an hour from me so we are going to try to have a Cooney reunion in December when my cousin comes from RI to visit her daughter in San Diego and another Cooney who lives in Orange County. All 3 have daughters and 2 have babies less than a year old so it will be a 3 generation event. I hope it works out.

Thanks Kathy,

I agree and will let you know what I learn. The similarities are interesting between the names and places they chose to live. My GGGrandfather Michael Cooney was born in 1836 in Ireland (father Thomas Cooney and mother Annie Kelly) and came over to Pottsville in 1848 - with a Patrick Cooney (brother/cousin?). Michael married Catharine Kennedy from NY and had my GGrandfather Thomas in PA but had other children in Baltimore before returning to Pottsville. He was a miner for a short time and is documented as a member of the secret irish society - the Molly Maguires. My GGrandfather Thomas was a saloon keeper in both Pottsville, PA and Philadelphia. His brothers and sisters seemed to stay mostly in Pottsville. My Grandmother told me about a connection (by marriage maybe) to John O'Hara - an author from Pottsville. My Grandmother had told me about the Molly Maguires and she also said to never forget that we were related to Cooney the Fox. I have read books and articles about Cooney the Fox - a Patrick Cooney who was involved in a murder in Chicago (within another secret society - the Clan na Gael)but escaped from jail and was never heard from again. I wonder if the slightly older Patrick Cooney who applied for Naturalization in Pottsville with Michael Cooney is that Cooney the Fox? I very much want to find out where my Cooneys came from in Ireland. The books on Cooney the Fox suggest Western and North/western areas like Donegal since that seems to be where the majority of the Irish that were in the Mollies and the Clan na Gael came from.

I post this story in the hope that some of it will be familiar to other Cooneys out there. Good luck with your research.

Hi Nell:
We have a lot of similarities. My grandfather John is said to have had a brother Thomas and possibly 5? other brothers and at least one sister. From what my family has said over the years is that Thomas moved to the San Francisco area and worked for a railroad. Some of the brothers in Maryland ran a coal and ice company in the early 1900s. I'm not sure how many were in the family. I've had trouble locating any of them in Maryland or Pennsylvania censuses before 1910. I'm pretty sure my grandfather was in Philadelphia in 1900 as my grandparents were married in 1898 and I think if they lived elsewhere it might have been mentioned throughout the years. I know very little about my grandfather as he died in the Spring of 1918 and my mother was not quite three years old and 2nd youngest so she didn't know too much about the family. My ggrandparents names were William and Catherine Cooney. Perhaps we are cousins somewhere along the line. I'll keep your info in case I come across a connection.
Kathy

Other siblings of Thomas were William, Mary, Ann, Michael, Margaret, Kate, and Florence. Their parents were Michael and Catherine.
Hi, James -- Sorry for the delay in responding to you as I just realized you posted a response to my post of so long ago. Since I posting my information, I've found out that Mary Ann COONEY O'BRIEN was born in Oldham, Lancashire, England about 1858 to Martin COONEY & Harriet MURTHUR (aka "Murtaugh" & "Murphy). Mary Ann COONEY married Thomas O'BRIEN, who was born in Claremorris, County Mayo, Ireland about 1856 to Michael O'BRIEN & Bridget Rathigan (or Radigan or Ratigan). Thomas & Mary Ann were married in England aroung 1871.

During the 1880s, all of this family, with the exception of Michael O'BRIEN (who died in the 1870s), made their way from Oldham, England to Fall River, MA. Also ending up in Fall River were the siblings of both Thomas & Mary Ann Cooney O'Brien.

Again, I apologize for not responding to you sooner.

Do you have a Dennis & Mary Cooney in your family? My gggrandmother Louisa Bridgitta Cooney remarried William Boddy in Toronto after her first husband Robert Byrens died in Grimsby Ontario. She listed her parents as being Denis and Mary Cooney. I have no idea where she was from in Ireland or whether any of her immediate family accompanied her here. There is a Mary Cooney as a witness at her first son's baptism in Hamilton Ontario in 1851. I can't find any other record of this Mary. This is my brick wall. Basically, after years of searching my family tree, I know zero about my Cooney family. This Dennis & Mary from Cobourg could be Louisa's parents, but I can't prove it, and they live so far away from each other it doesn't seem likely.
From marriage records-Martin was born in Ireland about 1843...his father was Peter Cooney & his mother was Margaret Dunn. Have no immigration data of year, arrival port or where Martin was born-County? Only data was the fact his wife went to Ireland after Martin died on 10 Jan 1894 in Chicopee, MA. USA.
Obit of Edward A. Cooney 1937

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

EDWARD A. COONEY
JUNE 24, 1937

Edward A. Cooney died at 4:45 Friday morning, June 18, in St. Joseph's hospital, Bloomington, at the age of 47 years, 3 months and one day. The cause of his death was that form of heart ailment termed coronary thrombosis.
Mr. Cooney was taken to the hospital when he became alarmingly ill June first. His wife remained with him from the beginning. While it was understood that his condition was grave, a marked improvement the last two days gave encouragement to the hope that he would soon be able to return home. His death came as a surprise and a shock to his friends.
The funeral was held in Saints Peter and Paul's church in Chatsworth at 9:30 Monday morning. Solemn Requiem high mass being sung by Rev. D.F. Kelly, of Chicago, assisted in the sanctuary by the Pastor, Rev. Phillip Markey, and Rev. C.J. Williams of Piper City.
Interment was made in St. Patrick's cemetery. In addition to the religious rites the Modern Woodman address was give at the grave by Past Consul Pliney Dancey.
The active casket bearers were T.J. Baldwin, Thos. G. Ford, Martin F. Brown, Leslie Ribordy, James O'Malley, Lou Fraher, F.M. Trunk and Leo Sneyd. The list of honorary pall bearers included eight members of the Kights of Columbus and eight Modern Woodmen.
The attendence at the funeral was large, there being relatives and friends from many places, representative groups of present and past associates and the people of Chatsworth paying their tribute of friendship for the deceased and sympathy for his family.
Edward Ambrose, son of Edward and Catherine (Laughlin) Cooney, was born at Tremont on March 17, 1890. He obtained his schooling in Tremont and in Brown's business college in Peoria. He began working at the barber's trade when a young man; at the age of 20 he came to Chatsworth February 14, 1910, and found employment with Phil Sampson. He bought the Walker shop in 1914. His skill and the good will he enjoyed in the community brought him a comfortable livelihood.
He married Miss Bessie Walsh in Chatsworth February 28, 1916. Four children born to this union, Joe, Jim, John and Joy survive to share with their mother the grievous loss of a devoted husband and father.
He is also survived by a brother, James, of Tremont. A sister and his parents preceded him in death.
He had been secretary of the Chatsworth Modern Woodman camp about 15 years and was also a Kinght of Columbus. He served the village one year as clerk and was for a time justice of the peace. Since a year ago last February he held an appointment as an inspector in the state department of registration, a political appointment which claimed considerable of his time and attention.
"Eddy", as he was generally called, was in enthusiastic participant in athletics in young manhood and always maintained a great interest in athletic activities, especially baseball. When he first came to Chatsworth he was one of the outstanding ball players of the local team, and at times he managed local baseball clubs. In the line of high school athletics he was an ardent supporter of all of their activities and the youth of the community could always count on him as one of their loyal backers.
Mr. Cooney will be greatly missed along the business street on which he was a factor for over a quarter of a century. With his intimate friends and with the youth and children he displayed a cordial manner of friendly familiarity which they expected and enjoyed - a way that won and held for him a little world of friendships and ties which now are sadly severed.

Re: What County are the "Cooney" Family from in Ireland?

All my Cooneys came from Tyrone; specifically Ardboe area.I haven't seen a Martin yet. There don't seem to be many left in that community. Be advised that the Cooneys there now spell it coney, and have for some time.

I have seen Cooney's in Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh,Londonderry, as well as Tyrone. In the south I saw them in Sligo, but I wasn't looking for them. I was searching for Martin Brennan; hids dadughter, Mary Agnes, married James Henry Cooney from Tyrone. They are my maternal grandparents.

Hi Barbara:
Thought I sent a reply yesterday but your message popped up as unread. Thanks very much for looking up the Cooney Tree.
The tree was posted by my cousin. We both have the same info but neither one of us can find anything on John Cooney's family.
