There is a COON(S) in my GREER family that we know nothing about except the following: John COON(S) and Elizabeth GREER were married 24 August 1809 in Nelson County, KY. Both were deceased by 1820. They had two children: George Jackson and Caroline who were raised by Samuel GREER until 1820 and then by either James or Samuel, Jr. after 1820.

I would appreciate any information anyone might have on this GREER - COON(S) family.

Thanks...agd

Thank you, Sandy. By 1853 Newton and Serepta were married and part of the Restoration Church. Newton's father was Elizah (Elijah Coons) married to Mary B Coons. Their children were Newton, Joseph, Andrew, Sarah, Permelia, and Nancy.
I wonder if this is your line also. I have photos of Newton ans Serepta moving into a victorian house on the family farm. They moved out of a small cabin which also still exists.

My husband and I are renovating the Victorian and interested in the history of the farm/family who lived here.

Thanks for your help.
Kay

Kay,
According to the biography of Peter Hon at http://www.therestorationmovement.com/hon.htm, by 1815 he was "moving away" from the doctrinal stands of the "Dunkards" (Church of the Brethren), and was soon labeled as a heretic and "expelled from the group." He became a minister in 1824, teaching "restoration" principles, aligning with the movement led by Barton W. Stone and Alexander Campbell, known as "Christians only," to become Churches of Christ/Christian Churches.

My ancestor, Jacob Coons (1800-1869, b. Montgomery County, KY, d. Missouri), was a preacher in the Restoration Movement, as I believe was his brother John. Other Coons family members went this direction too.

I did some sleuthing via the internet, and found that this was sourced to the Mt Sterling-Montgomery County Library, KY. I called them.

This is not a book. Mr. Mills wrote newspaper columns regarding genealogy, and this is a folder containing clippings of those columns, compiled by Hazel Boyd. The (very nice) librarian I spoke to, told me the folder was around 200 pages, arranged alphabetically (but not indexed) and she did find one column of 2 early pioneers, Jacob & John Coons. I hope to have a fax of this column, soon.

I did warn her that I'm posting this on the internet, and they would probably get calls on this for the next 10 years or more. Hope this helps!

If this is the same Cornelia that was married to a Harmon/Herman/Herbert Coons living in Hudson, NY, then we are cousins!! She was my 2x great grandmother too! (Maybe 3x) there were so many Herberts!! I would love to share any info you might have and I will dig out mine too. (I just moved)
I have a picture of Herbert Coons (one of Cornelia's son's). He used to work and live in Boston, Mass. This Herbert married a Mabel Sargent. I have lots more, but the Coons line is sketchy. This would be great if it the same line!
Please email me at:shamrockdznr@aol.com

Ancestors of George Washington Coons 1817-1870

I'm looking for any and all ancestors of George W. Coons, born 28 Jan. 1817 in Kentucky and died 14 Sep 1870 in Elk Grove, CA. He was married 29 Jan. 1839 to Sempronia Lanham in St. Louis. Missouri. I have a small amount of data on his father David and grandfather George, but definitely need much more. My research indicates that David (1794-1840) had three wives, Angeline Claypoole, an unknown McDonald, and Mary Eleanor Herring. Originally I thought that George Washington Coons was the son of Angeline, but further research seems to indicate that he was the son of Ms. McDonald. David appears to have had four siblings and I have considerable data on them, but not on their father George. Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks, Linda

As nearly as I can tell, my line of Coons went from Kentucky to Virginia (some) to Missouri to California, but I may be missing information on some of the earlier Coons. The farthest back I can go is to George Coons (bef. 1766) who married Sarah Allnutt Price, then died about 1820 in Harrison County, KY. Do you have anyone who looks like they might fit in there somewhere? Thanks

Did you have the Coons family reunion in Elk Grove as planned a few years ago?
My interest is that Harry Lanham Coons was married To Flossie Rich (who died in 1920). Harry was said to have traveled to So. American after than and apparently died there as he did not return.

Marilyn,
Thank you for the great bio on John M Coons and link to his father Frederick. From the looks of Frederick's family, John M. and Mary Coons were bother and sister. I agree, the birth dates are off a little, but everything else fits.

The notes on my family passed down showed Reuben Grady's wife as Mary Ann Mathis Coons. Since Fredericks wife's maiden name was Matthews, it seems more like this was a generational transcription over the years. Mary Ann Matthews Coons makes a lot of sense.

I've read a number of bios from the Fayette County Coons, but it is hard to trackdown the migration patterns once these families break up.

Again, thanks.
Jim

I have found a tombstone in the Mount Zion Cemetery, Eureka, IL (Woodford County) for John M Coons 1800-1874 and wife Sarah D 1798-1865. Does anyone recognize this line of Coons? From the census files, it looks like he was born in Kentucky and she in Virginia.

I am trying to make a connection with Mary Ann Coons Grady, who married Reuben R Grady and are also buried in the same cemetery. She was born in KY in 1819 and died in Weston, McLean County, IL 1907.

Thank you.

Grace (May 1890-?) was the adopted daughter of Cora M. Coons & Jacob Gill Gaudaur & granddaughter of Rebecca Elisabeth Fitzgerald & Frederick Coons. Upon her mother's premature death Grace was sent from Canada to live with Jake's sister in Buffalo. I can find no trace of her after 1900 at the age of 10. Her cousin John R. Coons, son of John Mason Coons & Alvina Carolina Bill told my father that she had left Buffalo to visit Creve Coeur and then 'went out west with someone.' My father (who was of a subsequent marriage) searched for his lost sister for many years. Grace also had a brother according to family notes, but that is all I know of him. Any information would be truly appreciated.

Jacob Coons of Catawba County, NC - Died in Civil War

I am looking for information about Jacob Coons, son of Adam Coons of Catawba County, North Carolina. Jacob married Mary Ann Bowman. They had one child named Camilla. Camilla married Gerard Lail. Jacob served during the Civil War as a Confederate, and is said to have died at the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse. However, the date of this battle is later than the date his will was filed. This would place his date of death around late 1862 or early 1863. His wife died shortly after that, leaving their daughter orphaned. Troop rosters are incomplete and I have found no official military record of his service. I do not doubt he served, but have no idea where he may be buried. If any one has information, please let me know. Thank you!

George Edward Coons 1864-1933
I am looking for more information on George E. Coons, most specifically his parents. According to his obituary (posted 15 Mar 1933 in the Minneapolis Tribune page 9) and his death certificate he was born 14 Feb 1864 in Ontario, Canada to a "Sam Coons" who was also born in Canada. His mother and place of birth are unknown.

George married Hattie E. Adele around 1886 and from their marriage had the following children: Maude F. 1886, H.B 1888, Delia M. 1891, Walter H. 1893-1977, Eva M. 1897, Georgia Fern 1900, Lorraine 1906, and Clayton Tracy 1908-1966. (With the exception of Walter H. and Clayton Tracy all birth years are estimated based on census records).

According to the Minnesota Death Index Hattie died 11 Jan 1912 in Hennepin Co., Minnesota.

George remarried to Bertha N. King between abt. 1926 in Minnesota. Before she married him Bertha had a daughter of her own named Dorothy H. King who dissapears after the 1920 census but who would have been born abt 1918. Other children of this marriage are: Florence Jane 1926, Hester, and Marion R. 1929.

Again according to his obituary George Coons had three sisters who survived him and he was buried in Crystal Lake Cemetery (confirmed, though he has no headstone). According to his son Walter he came to Minneapolis when he was 13 (1877) and according to census records he came to the US around 1876.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to research him back to Canada and find the name of his mother or knowns of George Coons and has any information on him then please let me know. My grandmother did not have close ties with her family and so much of their history remains a mystery.

Many Thanks,
Angela
I HAVE READ THE WELL SEARCHED FAYETTE COUNTY COONS BACK TO GERMANY. MY G GRANDFATHER, WILLIAM B. COONS, LISTED IN A 1860 US CENSUS AS AN ENGINEER BORN IN KY IN 1815. HE MARRIED MY G GRANDMOTHER EMMALINE ELIZABETH STEELE IN 1861. MY G GRANDMOTHER WENT TO LOUISVILLE AND DELIVERED MY GRANDFATHER, JOHN T. COONS IN 1862 AT THE HOME OF WILLIAM'S SISTER (ELIZABETH REBECCA GREY OR REBECCA ELISABETH). WILLIAM NEVER CAME BACK WITH HER AND SHE REMARRIED. SHE SAID WILLIAM DIED OF TYPHOID. SHE WAS VERY GARDED ABOUT ANY MENTION OF HIS NAME.
THERE IS A WILLIAM B. COONS (YOUR LINE) BORN IN FAYETTE COUNTY, KY IN 1818. HE WAS MARRIED TO LUCY M. FERGUSON WHO DIED OF T B IN A SANARTORIUM IN LOUISVILLE 1870. FIVE CHILDREN WENT TO LIVE WITH MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY. IF HE REMARRIED (TO MY GRANDMOTHER) THE DATES OF HIS FIRST WIFE AND THE MARRIAGE LICENSE OF MY GRANDMOTHER DON'T FIT UNLESS HE WAS MARRIED FOR A FEW YEARS TO BOTH. MY QUESTION IS COULD THEY BE THE SAME WILLIAM B, COONS?

Robert Coon m Mae Etta Pickens Clearman in Catahoula LA c 1860.

The marriage record online states "Robert Coon" but the children always went by Coons.

Robert (might have middle name of John, or a brother named John) was born in either LA, MS, or AL. Different daughters listed different info on census records.

I do not have a birthdate for him since I cannot find him on a census record. His wife was b 1847, but that isn't always an indicator. He died either 1879 or 1880 before the census in Mills Co., TX. His family moved to Bell Co. TX at that point.

The only clues I have to go on are the 4 children who made it to adulthood were born in different states.
1864 AR
1869 LA
1873 IL
1880 TX

I have no info on the children who died in infancy.

There were Coons cousins in the Central Texas area in the 1930s but my aunt doesn't remember the names. Possible counties are Falls, Mills, Bell.

His wife went by many names but I believe her to be the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Clearman.

Any help finding the right Coon/Coons family is appreciated.

Thanks,
Pam Cain

Re: Are COONS German?

Mine are German too. It appears they came over much later than the 1700's though. It looks like mine came over sometime in the mid 1800's according to census records. Anthony and Ann Coons seems to be their names. I am not sure what the German spelling was but some European friends have suggested Kuntz. If Anyone else can futher this along it would help me alot too.

Concerns about DNA testing for genealogy

Regarding genealogical DNA testing, here's a little more information to help calm fears about insurance companies using DNA information against us:

May 21, 2008

"President George W. Bush signed into law today the the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA). GINA - the first and only federal legislation that will provide protections against discrimination based on an individual's genetic information in health insurance coverage and employment settings.

"Today marks the beginning of a new era in health care," said Representative Louise Slaughter (D-NY). "Americans can finally take advantage of the tremendous potential of genetic research without the fear that their own genetic information will be used against them."

Just a few weeks ago, GINA received overwhelming support in both the Senate, with a unanimous vote of approval, and the House of Representatives, where the legislation was passed by a landslide vote of 414-1.

The health insurance protections offered by GINA are expected to roll out 12 months after the bill is signed, whereas the employment protections will be fully realized in 18 months.

Specifically, the legislation protects against genetic discrimination by health insurers or employers by:
Prohibiting group health plans and issuers offering coverage on the group or individual market from basing eligibility determinations or adjusting premiums or contributions on the basis of genetic information. They cannot request, require or purchase the results of genetic tests, or disclose genetic information.

Prohibiting issuers of Medigap policies from adjusting pricing or conditioning eligibility on the basis of genetic information. They cannot request, require or purchase the results of genetic tests, or disclose genetic information.

Prohibiting employers from firing, refusing to hire, or otherwise discriminating with respect to compensation, terms, conditions or privileges of employment. Employers may not request, require or purchase genetic information, and may not disclose genetic information. Similar provisions apply to employment agencies and labor organizations."

Everyone of us loses millions of skin cells every day, sheds hair (or get it cut), clip our nails, lick envelopes, and otherwise leave our DNA all over the landscape. We've been doing it all of our lives. If insurance companies wanted your DNA, they would have had it long ago.

Further, your name does not need to be associated with the test results in any way, if that's the way you want it done. You can collect the sample and then use only the surname to identify the sample. (FTDNA would like to keep the surname associated with the sample for research, but other information such as first and middle name, etc., can be left blank.)

The Coon/Coons/Coombs/Koontz, etc., etc., DNA research group is at FamilyTreeDNA.com There are 59 members and 30 have found a connection with another member. www.familytreedna.com/public/Coon

Re: John M. Coons - Woodford County IL

This sure sounds like your guy. If so, coming from a Culpeper County, VA, Coons family, he is likely descended from one of the Germanna Colonies Coons:

From http://morgan.ilgenweb.net/1894/c_001.htm:

"John M. Coons - This gentleman was born in the county of Fayette, state of Kentucky, on the 14th day of February, 1800. His boyhood days were passed in this county, and in conversation with the old pioneer we note that his mind often reverts to the scenes of his early life. Working on the farm was the main occupation of most of the youth of that period, as schools were rare, and the facilities for obtaining an education were deficient in every respect. Mr. Coons' entire attendance at school would not amount to over forty days. Most of his knowledge was obtained by reading by the light of the hickory blazing on the fire place. When the remainder of the family were asleep, often, he would study till the "wee small hours" of the morning. Mr. Coons was the youngest of the children, and, as was the custom in those days, he learned the trade of his father, viz: saddle and harness making. He also perfected himself as a carpenter and wagon maker, besides being able to work as a millwright. At the age of eighteen he was married to Miss Sarah D. Shay, daughter of Dennis Shay, a revolutionary soldier and an old citizen of Fredericksburg, Virginia. Mrs. Coons was born in Fredericksburg, on the 7th of January, 1798. Mr. Coons emigrated to Illinois, and finally located in this state in November, 1838. As they passed through Springfield the contractors were laying the foundation of the old state house. The land which they purchased at that early date now bears an altogether different appearance from the raw, uncultivated prairie. As to Mr. C's family we would state that two children were born, who still live and enjoy good health. Mrs. C. died on the 28th of January, 1865. After a long and lingering illness, she passed away to that other world where sickness and distress are unknown. Mr. C. is over seventy-two years of age, and is hale and hearty. He preserves to a remarkable degree the elasticity of his youth. In this connection it would not be out of place to state that his father, Frederick, was a revolutionary soldier, and enlisted in the colonial army in 1776, in Culpepper county, Virginia. He was one of the forlorn hope at Stony Point, being under the direct command of Gen. Wayne, often called "Mad Anthony." The captain of the company in which he served was John Gilisson. He was ill with the putrid sore throat at the time of the surrender of Lord Cornwallis. He moved, in 1794, into Kentucky. He raised seven boys and six girls, all of whom lived to be grown and married. The subject of this sketch was the youngest. In conclusion, we would say that the nem of John M. Coons is a household word among all the early settlers. He has won the confidence of all as an honest, faithful, and enterprising pioneer and citizen."

Take a look at this genealogy, address below, posted on WorldConnect. It has Frederick as husband of a Mary Ann, the son of Johann Jost (Joseph) Coons, brother of my ancestor Jacob, and father of John M. Coons. John M's birthdate doesn't quite fit though, but a lot of other things do. My Coons ancestors went to Fayette County, KY.

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
