Can anyone tell me if Thomas Copher (b: 1784; d: 1840) and wife Hester Patton Gay (B: 1787; d: 1852) had a son names Samuel A Cooper? Samuel was born 1837 in Indiana, died 1910 in Kentucky.

I'm looking to see if he is their son and why the last name is different. Thank you.

I think I can help clarify this a little. The listing you have below for the birth of Richard Edward Copher is my grandfather and his mother was indeed Helen Alvis Gear. I am not sure, on William J Copher, as to who his parents and family were. Helen did remarry later to a Kayle Watson and my grandfather was adopted and had his name changed to Watson.

Any other information you may have would be great.

My line is through Jesse Copher (Cofer; 1756-1822). Jesse and Jacob (1748-1834-39; your line) were brothers. Therefore, we have a common 5th great grandfather - Thomas Cofer 1745-1792. My family lines are from PA&VA&NC>KY>MO: Buchanan, Fields, Hays, Copher, Boone, Bryan, McQuitty, Wilhite, Elliott, Crump, Means, Shoush, etc.

I have much Copher (Cofer) family history, especially for Jesse, if you would like to exchange, please contact me off the Board at chetbuchanan@charter.net.

I live in Reno, NV, but make frequent trips back east.

There wasn't a question about Jesse's burial location until I discovered an 1830 deed transaction by Elizabeth and her son, David, that states that Jesse was buried [originally] in west-central Boone County. His body was likely moved to the Copher Family Cemetery sometime after 1836.

I would be happy to exchange information but I suspect we may have similar data. I checked the "Copher Family Web Site" and found that you are also a member. Thank you for the lead to the "Boone Society Inc" website but unfortunately I wasn't able to locate your article about Elizabeth Boone. I haven't actually visited Jesse Copher's grave and hadn't heard there is a question about it actually being his grave site.

Jesse's brother, Reuben, is my focus because I am descended through his daughter Jane who married Francis McGinnis. There is very little information about Reuben so I decided that through a process of eliminination I might find a Copher that didn't already belong to another Copher brother - no such luck. Jesse might be buried in the Old Copher Homestead Cemetery, but there is question. Please note my article, Where is Jesse Copher Buried in Boone County, MO in the Reporter for the Genealogical Society of Central Missouri, Vol 25, No. 1, Jan/Feb 2006. As for Elizabeth, please note my article, Elizabeth, Daughter of George and Nancy Boone in the Compass, Vol 8, Issue 2 -- Newsletter of the Boone Society, Inc.-- the Society has a website.

Your Mother and Bud I'm quite sure are the children of Cecil Copher of Webb City. The only name I knew for your Mother was Tootsie. I came in the family in 1950 and their Mother was already dead.

I have forgotten her name. She died before I came into the family in 1950. Cecil and his two children, girl and boy lived in Webb City. Unless he has died in the last year or two, there is another brother, the last one, of Cecil. His name is Robert Copher (BOB). If he's still living he is probably in his 80's or 90's. He also has a son Robert. Who would be about 60 years old or so. For more information on Cecil and his family you could contact a neice Carolyn Carder 417-624-6152 . If her husband George has not retired they own Medlin's tire market in Joplin.

Need help confirming that Helen A is Helen Adell Gear, born 1903 who married a Copher and had two sons. I find Helen A. Copher in the 1930 census with Allen and Wayne as two sons, and she is married to a William J. Copher (assume tis is Jefferson for J).

Looking for parents of Drusilla Coffer born ca. 1829 Kentucky, lived in Parke County, Indiana and married John O. Butler probably ca. 1848 and had Margaret (Maggie), William, Polly, John H., Albert, Henry, James, Morgan and Clark. They were in St. Clair, Missouri in 1880.

Suspect that Druscilla is daughter of Anderson Copher of Kentucky and Indiana or daughter of one of his brothers. Can any one help me out?

Can anyone tell me who the James Copher is that is listed in the 1860 Bath co ky census under the household of William Smothers? Also, can anyone tell me what happened to James Copher born to Reuben and Melvina 19 Nov 1859? He is not listed in their household in 1860, but is listed in their household in 1870, and 1880. After that, I cannot find him. In the 1900 census, I find a James Adkins family listed next to the Reuben Copher family. Does anyone know if James Adkins was raised or adopted by Reuben and Melvina?

After the death of Reuben Cofer on 12 Aug. 1853. F. Rand writes from Owingsville, Kentucky
that Jane Coffer, widow of Reuben Coffer, requests a copy of her
husband's pension declaration.
12 Sept. 1853. Bath Co., Kentucky. Gincey (X) Coffer of
said county, aged 72, declares she is widow of Reuben Coffer. She
was married 24 Feb. 1826 and her husband died 28 Oct. 1840, and
she is still his widow.
10 Oct. 1853. Bath Co., Kentucky. James Suddeth
declares Gincy Coffer is widow of Reuben Coffer.

Does anyone know who Jane was? Did he have two wives or was Jane a first wife? If he divorced her she might have thought she still deserved his pension. I have been led to believe that my Mary Cofer who married Reuben P. Moore was the daughter of Reuben and Jane Cofer. Mary was born about 1804 in Bath Co., KY. Gincy didn't marry Reuben until 1826. Reuben would have been around 66 years old by then.

I think your grandfather and my grandfather were brothers. My grandfather was Miles Copher and he was from I think Galena...I can't remember.

Anyway I know my grandfather had a brother named Cecil, and he was born August 28, 1909. If this sounds like we could be realated I would love to here from you.

I just happened to be going over the Copher line and saw your message. They are buried to the Copher Homestead Cemetery, Harrisburg (Boone County) Missouri. There is a picture of the tombstone and information on a web site - Findagrave. The info there was posted by Jerry Slick, a cousin of mine. We are both decended from Reuben Copher, one of Thomas Copher's sons. Hope this helps.

Does anyone have any idea who Matilda is? Louis was about 24 when they married, so she was probably b. before 1810. Possible parents in the 1830 census are Merritt Gwaltney, with a daughter 10 under 15; Elizabeth Gwaltney [who was her husband?] with 3 daughters between 10 and 19; and James Gwaltney, with two daughters 10 under 19.

Looking for any inforamtion on this individual. If this is the person I'm looking for, he was married to an Elizabeth who was killed in the Ashtabula Bridge disaster in Ohio. They had at least probably two son's: Charles Augustus Copfer and Henry Copfer. John is listed along with Henry as in the same town, so I'm assuming that Copfer is from Copher. Charles was reported to be out of home and living in Ohio from 1860-1890.
