Is the George Coppell possibly the George Coppell who lived in Louisiana, NY and Tenafly, NJ? He married Helen Gillingham Coppell, they had 9 children. George Coppell died in 1901 at age 64.

I am researching the Coppell family of Tenafly.

pjstef@yahoo.com

Regards,
Paul

Hello Shirley, I did see your message a while ago, but for some reason had trouble logging in to reply...and time passes. :)
Yes I think the Annie Brownhill who married Edward Coppell is the oldest daughter of Stephen Brownhill and Sarah (Heaton), and the dates match census data. My gr grandfather Edward Brownhill b. 1882 was the youngest child and only boy in that family. He said he had ten sisters so I suppose they lost some along the way and between census.
It also looks as though Edward Coppell b.1859 is the son of James b. 1822 and Hannah Middleton b. 1824.
It is possible also that Edward and Annie Coppell's daughter Ethel married Albert Gregory and their son Ernest Edward Coppell married Mabel B Malpas, both in 1916 and at St Luke's Salford. Salford is sort of in Greater Manchester now, although it used to be more separate before urban sprawl.
It would be great to find descendants of the Stephen and Sarah Brownhill family, and this Coppell family are part of it.

Hi.C
I haven't read the Coppell message board in ages.
Have you solved your mystery??
The IGI has James Coppell married Hannah Middleton
5 Jan 1845 Cathedral Manchester Lanchashire.
I don't know how far Manchester is from Salford?
Also listed in the IGI is the christening of Emily Coppell
6 Sep 1846 at same place.
The IGI record Hannah Middleton christened at the same Cathedral 26 Mar 1826, dau of Mark Middleton and Hannah.?
There are also 2 brothers and a sister listed.
Annie Brownhill listed in the 1881 UK Census as the eldest dau (of 7 ) of Stephen Brownhill (46) and Sarah (42).
Hope this helps!! if you haven't already found it.
Cheers
Shirley, a 7th generation descendant of Josiah & Mary Coppell.

Hi Roz,
I've been following the Capt thread and thought I'd let you know I'm researching my husband's Coppell line in Deptford, South London. These Coppells pronounced it the same way as you describe. So far I've got back to a Thomas Henry Coppell who married a Frances. No other info as yet. Their son James John Coppell (Toddy, nickname) was baptised 15.6.1851 at St Paul's, Deptford. He married Emma Gidley in 1884 in Battersea and died c1913. James & Emma are my husband's GGGrandparents. I'm trying to find a connection to all the other Coppells in London. Please could you let me know if you come across our Thomas Henry etc. I've been in contact with Red and Eric, and a cousin of my husband's in Canada.
Best wishes
Anne

Hi there John.
Another Coppell genealogist here. I'm researching my husband's Coppell family and have got as far back as James Coppell (nickname Toddy) bpt 1851 at St. Paul's in Deptford, Kent (now part of London). I can't find James's birth anywhere but I know his father was Thomas Henry Coppell who married Frances (unknown). It would be great to make a connection to Liverpool.
Keep us posted :0))
Best wishes,
Anne (Suffolk, UK)

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm very interested in the Coppells! James had a timberyard on the Thames at Deptford and his only son was a lighterman/waterman on the Thames. Due to the boating/maritime theme and James being nicknamed 'Toddy' I'm sure there's a connection somewhere!!
Look forward to hearing from you.
Anne (Suffolk UK)
I was sent this info from a member of the Texas Genealogy Soc.:-
There is a City called Coppell in Dallas County, Texas. so named after a George Alfred Coppell who was instumental in bringing the Railroad into Texas in 1890s. There is also several places named Coppell in Ontario Canada and it has been suggested that they were so called after an Engineer or Surveyor connected to the Railroad. Could this be the same Coppell? I have in my records a George Alfred Watkin Coppell, c.14th May 1854 in Liverpool, could this be the same one? Also a village called Coppell in France. (these Coppells get everywhere!!) Any info on that one?

Alice CLOW & John TODD had a son James, christened in Penicuik, Scotland. Does anyone know why this was. Was James born there?.
They also had a daughter Agnes christened in Roxburgh, Scotland.
Has anyone found the record of John's birth in Edrom ? The film I read was missing the front page of the register, being the place I think it would have been, seeing it was the correct year.-1763.

If you look at the LDS records for Coppells in the Lancashire area, they seem to be getting married and christened in the Church of England religion from 1730.

Unfortunately I don't know the Coppells in our family, so I don't know what, if any, religion they follow.

Sorry I can't shed light on Mr Wolfman's statement.

C

Hi Mark, sorry I havent replied sooner. How are your family connected to the Liverpool Coppells? There was a branch of Coppells in London in the 1800s but they originated from Liverpool. My cousin Red Coppell, has done a lot of work on the Family Genealogy. If you can give me your Family line - Father - Grandfather- Christian names, dates of birth etc. I will try and help you to trace your ancestry from Liverpool.
My Great Grandfather was a John Coppell and his Father was Edward James Coppell. I can trace my Family back to 1733 for definate and possibly back to 1646, so as you can imagine - there are lots of names and dates to connect with!
If you try a site called Myfamily.com it might also help you.
Look forward to hearing from you,
Regards, Roz.
October Tuesday
Mr. Henry Julius Leppoc, J.P., died at his residence, Kersal Crag, Higher Broughton. October 30. He was born at Brunswick on September 9, 1807, and in 1834 came to Manchester to manage a branch of the firm of Messrs. Michaelis & Samson, of Leipsic. The style of the firm in Manchester was that of Samson and Leppoc, and he directed its affairs until 1870, when he retired. For some years he was a director of the Chamber of Commerce. Money and time he gave liberally to nearly every charity in the neighbourhood. The Eye Hospital, the Barnes Charity, and the Deaf and Dumb Institution were under weighty obligations to him; as were the Athenæum, the Mechanics' Institution, and the Model Secular School founded in Manchester in 1854. As a magistrate and as, for many years, chairman of the Board of Guardians, he rendered great services to the public. His family name was originally Coppell.

C

Hi Anne,
Glad to make contact.I will go through all my info and see what I can come up with for you. I got a lot from the I.G.I.
From what I can make out, the London Coppells orginated from the Capt.who came from Liverpool, -the earliest -James C.1646. but there is no record of any Coppells in any other county in UK other than London before 1800s. I may be wrong and have to revise that statement, but it seems to me that they were Seafarers and landed in Liverpool. A lot of them were shipwrights, many seemed to be well educated for the time, and there is quite a few "Freemen of the City".
Regards,
Roz.

Hi Maggie,
By your "description" of the pronunciation I think we both say it the same.My G.Mother was so insistant that it was said correctly, that she had my Father christened -Edward Coppelle- with a silent "e" on the end, so that "there would be no mistake!". Subsequently, I inherited the same spelling!
There seems to be a trend with our G.Grandfathers - mine also had a second family. The youngest of which is still alive aged about 81.
As I dont have a scanner yet, shall I send you a copy of the Log? You could E-mail your address to me at;-
rozbradshaw@pictureframing.freeserve.co.uk
it might take a couple of weeks to get to you.Its quite interesting reading, I think the Capt. was well thought of as the Masters of most of the ships in the harbour at the time attended his funeral.
Regards, Roz

Hi Roz,
My grandmother Helen always said Coppell as a short
Co with the accent on the pell.
Difficult to do this by email. The South Island Family who came out here first, a few years earlier, say Coppell as in
Topple or apple, and it is quite funny talking to them, as our Coppell with the accent on the pell, sounds rather "posh'.One old lady we visited in the South, said she would not leave her money to anyone who said Coppell, the way I said it.I had to explain that I had never heard it any other way!My grand-mother never spoke of her father and I have been told that William left his wife and several children and set up family with another. My grandmother often spoke of her grandfather Edward, The Captain and had a few treasures from his collection, that she would show me when I visited her.She would not have met Edward of course, but her father or perhaps her grandmother Maggie, obviously told her of him.
'The Captain' was her hero I think.
