My Grandfather, Ross Glasgow Copper, worked much of his life as a lineman and engineer for various power companies. One of the companies contracted with the U.S. Government to install the power grid for our military bases in Canada, Iceland, and Greenland, and Grandpa Copper worked in all those places. When I was quite young, early fifties, he would write to me and send photos of the places he worked. His last place of employment was Stephenville, NFLD. Grandma Copper went up to Newfoundland to live with him, I think, in 1962 or 63. The letters were more frequent while she was there. She was not happy in Newfoundland, very lonely, she said. Grandpa left her alone a lot for Masonic business and work, and he drank and smoked quite a bit to which I can attest, having visited him there several times. You probably know that she had very little regard for either activity. She returned to La Crosse, Wi. and he stayed there. When we visited he took us to view many of the projects he worked on while there. They were quite spectacular: Radar units installed atop mountains, entire mountains moved into fjords so our B52's had a place to land, and antennae stretching across miles and miles of swamp and bog that point directly at Omaha, Nebraska so that they could communicate with the Strategic Air Command. He also introduced us to many of his Newfie friends who were fishermen, shipwrights, miners, and his Masonic friends. He was a very unique complicated man.
