Joseph Coppock 1800s

I'm seeking information about my great-great-grandfather Joseph Coppock, who lived in the midwest region. (I have no birth or death dates.) He was a member of the Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. According to the 1880 census, he had a daughter Mary (age 20), a son Joseph (age 8) and a son William (age 1, my great-grandfather). My research points to him living in the Ohio-Illinois-Indiana area, but I have no definite addresses. I think I've discovered who his wife was, but that's also murky at this point. If you can help with this search or think I can help you, please contact me.

although there is no record, I'm pretty sure John Coppock (1736-1801)and Joseph Coppock (1742-1799)are buried in the Bush River MM cemetery...many other Coppock's travelled on to Ohio, TN, and in my case GA.

I have found records where some Coppock's are buried in other non-quaker cemeteries in Newberry.

So far I have found 92 people purported to be buried in that cemetery. Many of them do not have headstones. Thanks for all the fine information on the Meeting.

I suspect there are other Coppocks buried there, in unmarked graves. Quakers graves in the 18th and early 19th century were often unmarked, or marked only with field stones. Genealogical extracts from early South Carolina Quaker meetings that were available at the time were published in volume 1 of William Wade Hinshaw's /Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy/. More information on the location of Bush River records is here: https://www.quakermeetings.com/Plone/meeting_view?anID=2035

I recently became the webmaster for the Bush River Quaker Cemetery. While checking my database I found there were a lot of COPPOCKs in the Bush River/Newberry area. The only Coppock in the cemetery is Ester D. named Hester in the cemetery records) married to William O'Connor.

Does anybody have any information about either of them? Does anybody know anything about the other Coppock families in the area?

Hi,
Thomas Coppock (1709-1746). B.A. Born Manchester & son of a taylor. Educated Manchester Grammar School & Brasenose College, Oxford. Briefly Curate of Snave Church in Kent, but dismissed after it was discovered one of his references for the position had been forged. Joined forces of Prince Charles Edward Stuart on their arrival in Manchester in 1745. Appointed Chaplain of the Jacobite Manchester Regiment recruited there. Also acted as Regimental Quartermaster. Alledgedly prommissed Bishopric of Carlisle by Prince Charles. During the retreat north, the Manchester Regiment was part of a small force left behind to garrison Carlisle as a future foothold in England. Thomas stayed with the regiment, and was taken prisoner when the Jacobite forces surrendered to the Duke of Cumberland. The Officers and non-commissioned officers of the Manchester Regiment were all tried for treason, and most, along with Thomas, were executed, he at Carlisle. He made at least two attempts to escape, and made a final plea to the government, offering to act as a priest, at sea, in the Royal Navy, in exchange for his life. The government, who were having massive problems finding clergymen who would volunteer for service at sea, asked the Archbishop of Canterbury for his advice on Thomas' plea. His earlier problems in Snave counted against him, and he was duly hung, drawn and quartered with his comrades. He was recorded as having had a fine speaking voice, and his speech at execution can be seen on line.
See Oxford DNB, Prisoners of the 45 (Seton & Arnot), The Jacobite Army in England (Frank Maclynn), Culloden (John Prebble), Jacobitism aand the English People (Paul Monod). His last speech is in 'The Lyon in Mourning'(amongst many other places). Hope this helps
Geoff

I am looking for descendants of my three great aunts, all with the maiden name of Coppock.

1. Jane Hannah Coppock married William Thomas Lacey in London in 1889

2. Alice Maud Coppock married either Ernest Walter Jones or John William Roberts in 1893

3. Flora Emily Coppock married James Lacey in London in 1903

I am the granddaughter of their sister, Lillian Susan Dinger nee Coppock, who married Alfred Vinzenz Dinger in 1888. They migrated to Australia in 1911. I would love to find out more out these three ladies and their descendants.

There was a William Coppock in West Lafayette, IN, 1900's era, he may even be buried there. I have Coppock's in my family, they were all there together, but cannot find a connection (perhaps an Uncle or step brother) in our family book there are pictures of Irene Coppock, don't know how she is connected to my Coppock's but pretty sure she is, hope this helps. I know I have William's Will here in my large room of research, however cannot locate it at this time.
Kim

Joseph Coppock bn. 1774 in PA in Jefferson Co., TN in 1803

This is a re-posting of Joseph Coppock of PA and TN.
I'm interested in information on a Joseph Coppock that was born in Pennsylvania ca. 1774, moved to Jefferson Co., TN and married a Lucinda (Lucy) Bingham in 1803. I have seen data that shows that this Joseph and Lucy had ten children and lists the exact birth dates for these children. Does anyone know where these exact dates came from? I have looked at Quaker records and they were not listed there. This family had nine females and one male from 1804 to 1823. There is also another list that shows these same ten children along with an eleventh child. This particular list shows two girls, Lucy and Nancy, being born a few months apart in 1811. The Nancy Coppock is also listed by other researchers as being a child of Joseph's brother Jacob Coppock (which I think is correct). Does anyone have more information on this Nancy Coppock that was born in 1811 in Tennessee? Thanks. Dale
Hello David,

I was certainly delighted to hear from you! Thank you so much for your quick reply to my message.

From what you said, it sounds like we are connected. I tried to get a copy of the original written certificate of Henry and Jane's marriage, but the people at the guildhall in London told me I had to go there in person. As much as I would love, it's beyond my means at the moment! A kind lady contacted me and copied part of the certificate for me, so that I could at least see their signatures and the correct spelling of Jane's middle name.

In the next few days, I will contact you again and e-mail some photos I have of my grandmother's family. I look forward to finding out more, and I'm grateful for any help you can give me.

Many thanks,
Glenyse

I am contacting a couple of fellow researchers who are doing the same tree and think yours links in.
Fairly certain Henry who married Sarah Thomas is the son of John Thomas Coppock and Elizabeth Miller (married 1803 Christchurch Newgate London. There lots of Australian Ancesters of this couple.
He appears to be the one in 1841 census Henry Coppock Cordwainer with the above parents.
Henry Coppock and Jane Hart Wright

I am interested in hearing from people in England who may have done the family tree of the Coppock family in London. My great-grandfather, Henry Coppock (parents Henry Coppock and Sarah Thomas), was born in London circa 1846. He married Jane Hart Wright on September 4th, 1865 at St. Leonards, Shoreditch. Their second child, Lillian Susan Coppock, was my grandmother. Also, I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has knowledge of Jane Hart Wright's family. All I know is her father's name was John, and it seems that Hart was her middle name, not part of her surname. I'd be very grateful if anyone can give me some information, particularly about Jane as I seem to have hit a brick wall in my research. Thank you!

I am a descendent of Aaron Coppock through Sarah Coppock Frazier. I noted in the will that it is questionned if one of the witnesses was Samuel Littler or Samuel Lighter. I am also the descendent of a Samuel Littler who lived in Nottingham, PA, dying in 1727, one year after Aaron Coppock. These two families seemed to have become reacquainted 150 years later when my gggrandmother married my gggrandfather.
