Conrad Corbus was not Elizabeth Corbus Fazenbaker's father. It is believed her father was Godfrey Corbus b. about 1740, appears on the 1800 George's Creek, Allegany County, Maryland census. Owned lots 3850 and 3851 at George's Creek. Was living in 1798 when he sold land to Elizabeth Pitser (Pitzer).

The date of his death is unknown to me.

His children were:

Catharine b. 1759 (probable) married Nicholas Holsbery. Died at Licking County, Ohio
Elizabeth B. 1761 (probable) married George Fazenbaker

Richard b. 1767, living in Champaign County, Ohio in 1807 died after 1825

Susannah b. 1767 Lonaconing, married Christopher Miller

Conrad b. 1772 married Fanny Potter, bur. Corbus Cemetery

John Corbus b. 1774-1780, Married Elizabeth Trollinger. Died at Muskingham County, Ohio

Godfrey b. ca 1775, living in Allegany Co. Md 1810

Andrew Godfrey , Married Lydia Mary Taylor, died 1815 at Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio

His wife was Charlotte but she may not be the mother of his children.

Hope this helps.

Karen

Conrad Corbus

I'm looking for information about Conrad Corbus. I recently found his grave and marker in the Corbus Cemetery in Barton Maryland.

His marker states he was born in 1772 and died 1839. His grave is the only Corbus grave marked with a stone.

My family genealogy has an Elizabeth Corbus marrying George Fazenbaker. They settled in the western Maryland area near the town of Barton. He was a Hessian solider during the America Revolution.

We think Elizabeth's fathers name was Conrad but the dates from the stone I found do not match up for him to be her father. Perhaps he also had a son named Conrad?

The Corbus Cemetery is located near the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Barton and it covers about 1 acre. Sadly there are only 4 graves marked with cut marker gravestones. There are several field stone markers present but they don't appear to have any inscriptions. Some other stones may have fallen over and have been covered with vegetation.

We have not been able to locate George or Elizabeth Fazenbaker's grave either. I am presently searching for records of the Corbus Cemetery.

However much to my dismay as a child i never asked the question about ancestry i wish i had. I think this Holland idea may be correct. My father is John Rolland Corbus and he died young.
Dear Nila,
I found a group of Corbus people living in Cornwall in the mid 1600s. They lived in the town of Ludgvan which is very near Carbis Bay. I have been in contact with one of the Cornish Carbis clan (from whom the name Corbus may have come.)
However the name does appear in Switzerland as Corbaz, in the south of France as Corbusier, in Italy as Corbusiero, and so on. Sometimes I wonder if some of the Corbus clan were early disenters called the Cathars or Albgensians. One of their castle/towns was Queribus (now a ruin. The Cathars were wiped out by the Catholic forces of the French king in the 1200s.)Someday we'll find out how, when, and why the family came to Maryland.
To satisfy your curiosity I am 82. How about you?
It is interesting that most of the names of the earlier Corbus men were names most usually used by Protestants.
Burt

Burt,
Thank you for the great information. I decend from Richard's daughter Elizabeth, who married Elijah Legg in Champaign Co OH (1817). On the 1880 census Elizabeth says that her father was born in Holland, so I think there is some credence to the French Huguenot legend.

Do you know what the original French spelling could have been? Corbusse?

I hope you don't mind if I ask you a very personal question. If your father was born in 1875 ... how old are you?

Thanks again for your help.

Sincerely,
Nila

Godfrey Corbus served in the Maryland militia during the Revolutionary War, after the war ended all personnel that served in the Maryland military were granted a plot of land, Godfrey took his family there after the war. Godfrey may have come from Europe with a Brother, but I have not found proof yet.

I am from one of the descendant's of Samuel B Corbus Sr. last child (from a total of several children) that he had (borned1869 in MO. Samuel moved to Michigan with his second wife. Samuel is buried in Saint Louis Michigan. Godfrey Corbus is also buried in Michigan near Coldwater. I do believe that the family traded furs during the winter months, since one of his sons were born in Michigan.
I believe I am also descended from Godfrey Corbus, born about 1744 and living in Allegany County, Maryland in the late 1700s. Iam also descended from Andrew Corbus who came from Maryland to Franklinton, now Columbus, Ohio. He married Lydia Taylor about 1799, was in the Ohio militia in the War of 1812, and died of Typhoid fever about 1815. He and his wife had three children, the two boys were John, born 1808, and Godfrey, born 1810. My ancestor is Godfrey. my great grandfather. The two boys were eventually aprenticed to a hatter and with him moved to Millersburg, Ohio. Godfrey and his family moved on to Illinois, where my father was born in 1875.
My family legend is that the Corbus family were French Huguenots, who came to America via Britain. They may have come via Holland. On the internet I found some Corbuses living in Cornwall about 1640. There are two or three other members of our extended family who have done much work on this project. So far as I know, no one has yet figured out how the Corbus clan reached western Maryland. All known is that the three major branches are from Andrew, who settled in Ohio, Godfrey, who moved to Canada and thence to Detroit and John Samuel, whose son, Samuel, moved to Beaver Falls,PA.
Good Luck, Burt

On the 1880 Champaign Co OH census, Richard Corbus' daughter Elizabeth Corbus Legg Lough says that her father was born in Holland and her mother in New Jersey.

So it's possible that the name is Dutch. Perhaps the Corbus family immigrated to Holland from somewhere else, though, like Germany or France.

Samuel Britton Corbus is a descendant of Godfrey Corbus who settled in Detroit from western Maryland by way of Canada in the early 1800s. Godfrey is believed to be one of the brothers of my ancestor, Andrew Corbus, who left Maryland for the region of Columbus, Ohio. He and his wife died of typhoid fever in 1815. They left a daughter and two sons named John and Godfrey who was my great grandfather. There was one other brother, Samuel who died in Zanesville, OH. His son, John Samuel Corbus, moved to Beaver Falls PA. and has many descendants.

Could someone post the names of the known children of Godfrey Corbus and his wife Charlotte & Sarah. Godfrey was living on George's Creek in Allegany County, Maryland in 1800. A close neighbor was the Nicholas Holsberry family. Sometime ago I came across a researcher who believed Nicholas Holsberry's wife was Catharine Corbus.

I am trying to verify or eliminate this possibility.

Karen

Would like names of known children of Godfrey Corbus and wife Charlotte. How many?

Trying to verify or eliminate the possibility that the wife of Nicholas Holsberry who was living three families away from Godfrey in 1800 was Catharine Corbus.

Nicholas and Catharine and family settled in Licking County, Ohio about 1820. Had among others, John and Conrad and daughters, Elizabeth and Susannah. Naming pattern here?

Karen

To all Corbus researchers -in an e-mail posted to the
AMREV-HESSIANS-L@rootsweb.com mail list on
Oct.18, 2001 by Mr. Walt Warnick, he writes:

"In 1995 I published the second edition of my book
entitled "Warnick Families of Western Maryland", which
has 536 pages. It is about Joseph Warnick and his
descendants.
Another near neighbor with George Fazenbaker and
Joseph Warnick was the family of CONRAD CORBUS.
The Fazenbaker's and the Corbus's were especially close.
I have not been able to find anything about the origins
of Conrad Corbus." --

In another e-mail it was mentioned that the Hessian soldier
Georg Fazenbaker (Fessenbecker) married Elizabeth who
could have been a daughter of Conrad Corbus. This is
not confirmed.

Personally, I am researching Hessian soldiers of the
American Revolution and am primarily interested in the
Hessian Vesenbecker/Fessenbecker, but knowing too
well how those Hessian soldiers stuck together after
they left the service for whatever reason, I would like to
find out who this Conrad Corbus was. Another Hessian?
Any help is very much appreciated.
John Merz, http://www.cgocable.net/~hessian

I have been searching for Marie Ann Corbies. I now have reason to believe Corbies was her prior marriage. She married Henry Steiner in 1841 in Alabama. Henry had just arrived in America from France. He was born in 1811 and it looks like Marie was born in 1798. She was likely married to a Corbies/CORBUS prior to her marriage to Steiner. Does any one have one of their Corbus married to a Marie or Marie Ann. I am not sure where she was even from she passed away in 1847.

Please stay in touch with me .Godfrey and Joesph, etc. are buried at Girard. James is buried over at Quincy. I grew up there and my gggrandma was Eliza Corbus Kingston(David). I may still have a old picture of them. I have just started sorting on that side of my family. I would love to hear from any relatives that might help me tie this side together.Madge Tappenden Ladd

Thanks for your reply. Dick Heller is a third cousin of mine. We have been in contact for several years. I have also swapped information from Ben Thompson -
74167.1757. He is a descendant of Godfrey Corbus, the eldest of the 3 (or 4) original brothers. Godfrey left Maryland to go to Canada and thence Detroit about 1800. Ben has done extensive research on that branch of the family. Dick and I are descendants of Godfrey's brother, Andrew.
Burt Corbus
