My great great grandmother was Harrieta Amelia Corby born on March 26, 1850 in
Chenango, Broome Co., NY. Her husband, according to family history, was George Standish Downer III,
born in England in 1832. The 1850 Census shows a Harriet A. (less than 1) as the daughter of Ira Corby, Jr. 20 and Clarissa 19 his wife living in Chenango, Broome Co. NY. The same census shows an Ira Corby 49 (probably his father) and his wife Ann 47 with the following children Issac 26, Elizabeth 23, Hannah 17, Elias 14, Helen 12 and Sarah 10. According to family history : " Grandpa Corby was in the Civil War for 3 years, returned and was a blacksmith. During this time his wife was at home with three or four children in or near Binghamton, NY." The 1890 Census lists an Ira Corby, a Union veteran of the Civil War, living in Alexandria, S.D. Family history records Clara Amelia Downer traveling west in a covered wagon from Dixon, IL to Salem, SD in 1886. The family then lived in the vicinity of Alexandria and Mitchell, Hanson and Davidson Co., SD. Clara Amelia Downer worked in a hotel in Mitchell, SD
until she was 19 and met and married Charles Stolts on 27 Nov 1891. In 1893 Charles and Clara returned east to western NY. The rest of the family apparently moved on to Cottonwood, Idaho Co., Idaho and later some to Wyoming. The 1910 Census lists Harriet A. Downer in Cottonwood, ID with the following children: Henry J. age 23 b. IL , Clarence L. age 20 b. SD, Effie E? age 19 b. SD,
and Albert R. age 18 b. SD.
Harrieta Amelia Corby Downer, also according to family history had the following children: 1) Edward Downer, 2) Edwin Downer 3) Bessie Downer 4) Harriot Downer 5) Henry Downer 6) Effie Downer 7) LeRoy Downer 8) Raymond Downer 9) Earl Downer 10) Charles William (Frederick?)
