Brick wall with John. John Cordell was born in 1810 in Brunswick, VA. His wife was Angeline Cox <?> born abt 1815 in Wake County, NC. John and Angeline had the following children: Margaret b abt 1834, Henry b abt 1837, Lewisa b abt 1840, Columbus b abt 1841 and finally Mary Jane b. abt 1850. Mary Jane is my direct line.

Rev'd John Cordell appears to have served in the Revolutionary Army as a Captain as well as a Chaplain. The muster rolls record him as apptd. Chaplain, nth Va. Reg., Feb. 15, 1777. The Auditor of Va. certified, 1843, ''la' ^e nad settled his accounts with Va., Apr. 4, 1783, for services ending Jan. I, 1779. Jan. 30, 1837, his heirs rec'd 6000 a. land for 3 years service. (Rep. 1063, 27th Cong., 2d Sess.) Va. State Doc., No. 31, 1835, says, he was Captain from Jan. I, 1777 to Jan. I, 1779, and Chaplain to Feb. 10, 1781. He then rec'd j£4,ooo advanced to him for the use of the Army. "He served upwards ol 4 years and is entitled to bounty land for a service of 3 years as Chaplain." Rep. No. 457, 28lh Cong., I Sess., says, "he was taken prisoner at Brandywine, and kept in captivity till the beginning of 1797, when he became a Supernumerary Officer," and as such his heirs rec'd bounty. Gen'l Dan'l Morgan certified, 1792, that Jno. Cordell was Chaplain to his Reg., Jan. 1,1777, and so did Chief Justice Marshall."

Ok my name is Shelia Lynn Bohannon Selby. I was born in Crossville Tenn. My dad was Albert Thomas Cordell, he died when I was 7, so I didn't know him. But I did meet my grandma Macill in 1980 where she lived i was 18 at the time, but didn't get to see much of her, she died in April of 1982.

Trying to locate a family member of Ralph Durward Cordell from Hartwell, GA. 07/07/1935 - 01/15/67. He was a Major in the Army in Vietnam when killed there.

Am doing some military research on this man and trying to find out where he is buried, some bio background, etc.

The two Cordell brothers came from England, they settled in a few states before they arrived in GA. Their names where John Cordell and I think James Cordell. James settled in Elberton Ga, John settled in Hartwell Ga. The Amos Cordell branch is from James. Fannie Lee Craft Cordell has stated her decendants came from Scotland. The name Cordell means "little Cord maker" in English.

I am a descendant of the Benjamin Cordle/Cordell who married Sarah Humphery and had son - Eli Nathan Cordle (1795-1840) who married Sarah Jennings (1793-1886) and had son - William Sanford Cordle (1827-1900) who married Louisa Brummitt (1840-1915) and lived in Cainsville, MO. They had son Caleb Burton Cordle (1872-1951) who married Charlottie Guritt Baker (1879-1968) and had my Grandmother, Inez Vivian Cordle Carlisle (1904-1989). Given the name, George Edward, your line must emanate from the George Edward Cordell, son of John Cordell, the emigrant, from ?, and his wife, Elizabeth Edwards.

if you have not already seen the Humphreys book (can't recall the title but it is something like CORDELL: A Family history?), pub'd in 1940, in Arkansas, try to find a copy. I believe it will help you with your line.

I am not personally researching this line, but I am researching Cordells. In fact, the name Kinkead (and many variants) shows up in the Cordell line, in St. Louis Co., MO. A Cordell daughter there, married a Kinkead son there.

If you are looking for other leads, this might prove to be3 useful. The MO Hist Society, ash the Cordell family (my line's) papers. In them, I ahve read about the Kinkead - Cordell connection.

I believe that line of Kinkeads may have come up from Arkansas to St. Louis Co in the early 1800s, but this is not something I am sure of, or could prove. Pitzkin's 1868 (?) map of the county shows Kinkead land near the Cordells.

Hope this helps.

PS My uncle, Dick Stubblefield, lived in Avondale, CO, but I believe he was born in Texas, and came from a big Stubllefield family. I have also seen the name 'Stubblefield' in old VA records, quite often.

Fanny Ellen Cordell's birth record appears on FreeBMD as having been registered in the Caistor, Lincolnshire district of England in 1863. If you think that a birth certificate of her could help you, you could order it through the UK GRO: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/order_certificates/obtain_...

If you want a marriage certificate of her parents, it is listed as a marriage between Robert Cordall and Jane Stephenson in the Louth, Lincolnshire district in 1837. You can also order a copy of the marriage certificate through the UK GRO.
