Hi There,
I think your grandmother might be the sister of my great grandfather Alfred Le Goubin. On the 1891 census they are both listed. Their parents are Louis Charles Le Goubin and Emily Matilda Ennis. My mother's mother was Erica Violet Le Goubin. Look forward to hearing from you, Cerian

I am looking for the family of my great grandmother Sarah Ellen Cordial. She was born in 1853 in Tennessee as was both of her parents. She married John Wesley Beaittie. I can't seem to find anything about her family. I believe she had older brothers. The rumor in the family is that she would go between families in the area with current news of the Civil War when she was about 12 years of age. I would appreciate any help.
Thank You.
Bev

Mary Ellen Cordial (b. 1859, New York)

Looking for information about Mary Ellen Cordial, b. 1859 in NY, married Charles Bullock in the late 1870s, mother of Jane (b. 1879), Annie (b. 1881) and James (b.& d. 1888). This family lived in Williamsburgh, Brooklyn/Kings Co., NY. At the time of her death in 1889, Mary had been "a resident of the city" for 14 years. I suspect she might be one of the Westchester Co./New Rochelle Cordials, but the census records don't seem to match up. Any information would be appreciated! Please post a reply or email kpowersv(at)yahoo.com with CORDIAL in the subject line.

Thanks,
KPV

I think her parents were James and Martha Cordial and she was born in London. from the census I see she had 2 sisters mary and Cecilia/cecille or even genella and 1 brother James. cecille was born in India so would fit in with your story. Please get in touch if you think we do share a common link.Pam

Hi Violet,

I have some info that may relate to your Cordials. You may already have it, but here goes ...

In the 1891 Census, there is a 20-year-old James Cordial from St Heliers, Jersey, stationed at the District Royal Artillery Barracks at the Woolwich Dockyard. He is an Acting Bombardier with the Royal Artillery. Coincidentally, my great-grandfather (also James Cordial) was staying in another barracks at the same dockyard!

In the 1891 census for St. Heliers, Mary Ann Cordial is listed as head of the family (herself, William, age 6, born in St. Heliers and John, age 3, born in Dover, Kent). The house was at 49 Aquila Rd. However, she was listed as being 33 and a widow, so maybe she is not your Mary Ann? However, maybe the census taker just assumed a woman with children was a widow, since it looks like James was alive and well at the Woolwich Dockyards!

In the 1901 census, for East Ham, Essex, there is a family of Cordials living at 3 St. Martin's Ave.

Head: James Coridal, age 30, Segeant of the Royal Artillery, born Pembroke, Wales
Wife: Martha, age 32, born in Kent
Son: John, age 2, born in Essex
Daughter: Dorothy, age 2, born in Essex
Son: Wineford, age 3 months, born in Essex
Niece: Mary Vigo, age 13, born in Middlesex

I don't know if any of this helps. Good luck with your research!

Beth

Hi Judith,I'm so sorry not to have got back to you ,I did receive your mail but have not had chance to reply as my Aunt was very ill and passed away on 5th of February, she was the last of the previous generation of Cordials in my family and will be sadly missed.
Anyway I'm trying to get back on track now and have been trying to find more info on your John Cordial.I can't seem to find anything apart from the J.C.born in Ireland about that time.I have sent for the birth certificate but I don't know how we can be certain it is him,do you have anything else that may be a clue to his ancestry? I am going to London later in the year so maybe I can tie him in somehow with records up there or if there are siblings of the one born in Ireland maybe find out a bit more about him. It's such a shame he wasn't in the services himself as both Beth and I know ,these records hold so much information that you can be 99% certain that you have the right person.
Bye for now
Violet

Hi to all you Cordials you out there,
After researching the family name for the last three years I have decided that as it is such an unusual surname I am going to start a one name study in the New Year ( not for financial gain )but to find out just how there came to be to so many of us and why there are so many derivitives .The name originally came from France and most families moved to Ireland or Scotland. This puzzles me as there is no Heogonot connection.I would love to hear from anyone who would like to contribute information but this must be backed up by BMD certificates,Baptism or at the very least Census Info which can be verified.I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards
Violet

Hi Beth,Thanks for your reply (the only one up to now)! Great to hear from you again ,I would love any info you have.I know its' going to be quite a task but being in the U.K. its' not too difficult to get to records as you know.I am hoping to go back to Jersey in the New Year as something very odd has cropped up with my Cordials.I'm also off to Ireland at Easter with my sister for two weeks so if you want any look ups I'd be happy to oblige.I will mail you as soon as I get some spare time and tell you about my Cordial mystery.Have you looked on ancestry lately? An entry has cropped up in the 1871 Census for yet another James Cordial based at Gunwharf Portsmouth and married to Jane who was born in Jersey C.I.I've looked at the original document and it is definatley transcribed o.k.So where on earth has he come from?Anyway ,Have a lovely Christmas and a Happy New Year!
God Bless
Violet

Hi Beth, Hope you had a good Christmas.I've just come across something which might interest you.I was looking at a site the other day (still searching for my Grandfather!) and I found a James Cordial ,born Limerick 1824.It would seem that his Father was in the Army too as the listing is of Army births! he is in vol.32 page 26 (AB 91) Army Births and Deaths.I don't know if this would be at Kew or Islington but I can find out for you.I'm sure he must be your James as he is the only one I have come across that was born in Limerick.
No luck yet on St George I'll keep searching.Let me know if you want me to do anything (I'm as excited as I know you will be when you read this!
God Bless
Violet.

Trying to find the name of Rebecca CORDIAL/CORDELs husband. He probably died before 1850 since Rebecca is found living in household with John & Serena (Cordial) HOLLAND.
Rebecca born abt 1805 in SC, died in Roane Co.,TN. Her husband possibly born &/or died in SC or GA.
Serena/Surena is the only child I have for Rebecca. She was born abt 1826 in GA. Probably others.
Have found the surname spelled CORDIAL, CORDEL, CORDELL, and CORDALL
If you have information, please contact me.

Hello Violet!

ANOTHER James Cordial? Boy, these fellows got around, didn't they! I hope to write up my information over the Christmas holidays and will send it on to you.

If you are going to Ireland, I would love to find out about any records for James Cordial Sr., born in 1824, Limerick, in County Limerick. His attestation papers say he was born in the parish of Saint George, but for the life of me, I can't find a St. George, Limerick in the civil or Catholic parish system.

If you could find a record number it would be greatly appreciated. Please don't feel you need to spend money on copying and postage. You were an angel to do that last time, but I certainly wouldn't want you to make a habit of it :)

Wishing you and your family all the best this Christmas and happy new year!

God bless,

Beth

Hi Beth,Does the name Henry Cordial mean anything to you? He came from Longford Ireland and joined the British Army (44th Foot)in 1817.He has not come up in any other records as far as I can see. Also ,do you know why all the Irish Cordials I have come accross hail from Granard/Longford?
Regards
Violet

Hi Violet!

I haven't run across Henry yet, but will keep an eye out for him. I know what you mean about the Granard/Longford thing ... that's one of the only places where there seems to be a "cluster" of Cordials, isn't it. I think my James' have a connection there too. James Courts was given a book of Irish music inscribed "from the Earl of Granard". (Can't remember the gentleman's name right now.)

Now, James Courts was born in England but he enlisted in Mullingar. So the family must have moved back to Ireland after James Sr. retired from the Army. I'm wondering if my Cordials are part of the Granard bunch, even though James Sr. was born in Limerick.

Sigh! I wonder if our ancestors ever imagined the puzzles they would leave for us?! :)

All the best!

Beth

Hello Vi,

Don't worry about the extra message... I do it all the time :) I have not run across Peter Cordial yet but will let you know if I find out anything.

I'm not really familiar with the records at Kew. What I'd like, if possible, is a copy of each man's service record. Even if you could just get me the document numbers I could send away for them myself. ANY information would be valuable and I am most grateful that you're willing to help me!

This is what I know about each man, which I hope will help you locate the records. Both served in regimental bands.

JAMES CORDIAL
- born in Ireland
- served in the Crimea and the Indian Mutiny. He was a bugle-major with the second battalion, Rifle Brigade. He may have been acting Bandmaster (Sergeant-Major) later in life.

JAMES COURTS CORDIAL (MAY BE LISTED AS "CORDEAL")
- son of James Cordial
- born in England?
- served with the first battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers (Regimental number: 0300).
- awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal on November 15, 1898. He is listed as a Drummer-Sergeant at the time. (I'd love to know ANY details about how he earned this medal!!!)
-served with Kitchener at Khartoum and in the Boer War.

I hope this information helps. Thanks again for offering to help! Please let me know if there's anything I can look up for you on the Canadian side :)

Beth

Hi Beth, Thanks for the info.I did have some of it already but until last week I only had what was on the censuses and a bit about my Grandfather (John Francis) that I found when I was in Jersey.Still no Birth record! I went to Kew last Friday to see if I could find him in the Royal Navy records but no luck. While Iwas there I looked up Army records and wow! I found James snrs' records then James jnr.James snr joined the Royal Artillery on14th May 1860 aged 28 years. He was a miner before that.1860-1862 he served at home (England) 1862-1865 he was in India 1865-1882 he served at home which had changed to Jersey. He married Mary Ann Chard in Jersey in1870 .James jnr was then born in Wales1871.He joined the Royal Garrison Artillery (Jersey) aged 14 yrs 2months.in 1885 (the year William was born) He married Minnie Martha Baker on30th may 1893.Served all his time in U.K.and was discharged 13th August 1897.I think he and Martha had 4 children (not 100%sure yet) John James & Dorothy (twins ) born1899 Winefred born 1901 & James (how unusual!) born1902.They lived in East Ham and I don't think they ever returned to Jersey as I believe James jnr died here in 1910 .James snr also died over here in 1900.
Oh ,I nearly forgot! You asked about Irish Cordials, well underneath James snrs' records were a William Cordials'.He came from Longford (don't know where that is )but he was Roman Catholic and his fathers' name was Patrick.Sounds a bit Irish to me! I have copies of his papers if
you want more info on him.
regards
Violet.

Hi Beth,I have some info on Irish Cordials. It's not much but it may help.
James Cordial Born about 1792-Ireland
Married about1813 Ireland
Wifes' name Bridget Stewart
Born about1792
Married about1813
They had one child named James Cordial born 1814 in Longford Ireland (now I know where Longford is). This James married Catherine Stewart on the 14th September in Dundee Angus Scotland.Catherine was also born in Ireland in County Tyrone in 1813.She died in Dundee on 4th september 1863.I do not know if they had any children .Her parents were William Stewart and Bridget Conway.
I have also found an Edward Cordial born 1811 in Ireland
living in Durham England aged 70 in the 1881 British Census. There are also 2 Cordials listed on Ellis Island, Patrick from Roscrea arrived in 1900 aged 23 and Timothy also from Roscrea arrived in 1899 .John James (James jnrs' son)also arrived there in 1920.So it looks like I may have some American cousins.
Regards ,Vi
