I just recently received the obit for Robert Westfall Higgins who died January 1981 in Albuquerque NM. The obit does NOT mention where is was buried.

I had info prior to receiving the obit I had info that he had been married 3 times:
1) Bertie Ann Worth married 1933, Divorced 1935 no children
2) Hilda Irene Rhodes married 10/14/1940 ....divorced. They had 2 children Alexander Robert and Mary Lou
3) Betty Hogue (or Hoage)...they had a daughter Robert Lou.

In the obit for Robert it lists his children. 7 daughters, which makes it hard to know who exactly belonged to which marriage...or if the girls were from a wife's previous marriage. 2 Sons.

He was survived by his wife Betty Higgins.....Hogue (or Hoage)

Children:
1) Wanda Dunlap of Albuquerque
2) Betty Houston of Edgewood
3) Pamela Bakke of Albuquerque
4) Cathy Smith of Albuquerque
5) Michelle Cordova of Edgewood
6) Roberta Higgins of Albquerque....(mother Betty Hogue)
7) Peggy Hogue of Virginia ...daughter from Betty's previous marriage????
8) James Hogue...son from Betty's previous marriage??...Hazelton, PA
9) David Hill...How does Hill fit in??? Albuquere

The info I had prior said there were 2 children from the marriage to Hilda Irene Rhodes...Alexander Robert and Mary Lou, but neither of these names were listed in the obit.

It would be so nice to know how all of the children mentioned in Robert's obit fit into his marriages.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated,
Anna

I found my sister Shirley a few years back. She lives in Durango, CO. and we do not have a relationship, per her choosing.Last I knew she was very ill. She has a son name Victor. She also, has a daughter named Teresa. Have spoken with her a few times. But, have given up hope of getting to know her. Still, don't know any of my other Bio-family. I found out my brother was killed in an accident and that was a sadness for me to hear. He was all I ever had. His family chose not to meet with me as well. I don't know if this is the same family we are speaking of. Would like to know more about you. Thank you for your reply. Connie

Thier sponsors were Hermenegildo Cordova and Helena Gallegos

27 February 1901: Henrique Medina of Walsenburg married Felicitas Cordova of Walsenburg. They were the children of Juan M. Medina and Antonia Sandoval and Miguel Cordova and Rafaela Medina. Their sponsors were Celso Cordova and Maria de Jesus Sandoval and the following children are listed:

* Maria de Jesus - 2 June 1901 - 30 June 1901
Celso Cordova and Rafaela Medina
(married Emilio Sierra - 8 October 1928)
* Miguel - 5 May 1904 - 7 May 1904
Victorino Trujillo and Gabina Roibal
(married Rebecca Gonzalez - 18 January 1926)
* Maria Usia - 11 June 1906 - 24 June 1906
Manuel Lucrecio Cordova and Cecilia Romero
* Herminia - 17 January 1912 - 11 February 1912 (Lester)
Julio Martinez and Maria Guadalupe Martinez
* Alcaria - 18 March 1913 - 4 May 1913
Miguel Rampa and Juana Martinez

24 August 1901: Celso Cordova of Santa Clara married Emilia Jaquez of Santa Clara. They were the children of Jose Miguel Cordova and Rafaela Medina and Juana Fresquez (mother). Their sponsors were Elfido Zamora and Adelaida Sandoval

I cannot guarentee that this is all the information available on these families. I always like to verify information I receive from other sources. So, again, you can find this information in the St Mary's Church records. I hope this is helpful and leads you to the answers you seek.

As far as the origin of your Cordova ancestors, you will find few Cordovas south of Santa Fe before 1850. My Cordova ancestors can be traced back to Truchas and Cordova, New Mexico, which is near Espanola. They came to New Mexico around 1712. Good Luck with your research.

Doug Cordova

Just looking through the message board and ran across this message. This is a stab in the dark but I have Montoya and de la Cruz Lopez that run in my Cordova family. The Montoya's are from Las Truchas NM and the de la Cruz Lopez did move there also. I am having a hard time finding much on these families. I have Maria Teofila Lopez, mother Maria Guadalupe Cordova and father Jose de la Cruz Lopez, married Octaviano Montoya. Also, a Maria Nieves Lopez, related to Teofila, married a Juan Agustin Montoya (brother of Octaviano and grandfather by same name).

Was Albert the son of George Cordova and Tiburcia Rascon. His birth date matches a record I have in the Cordova family tree. If so, I have a couple of hundred names of his ancestors to share with you.

My wife is descended from Cristobal Cordova who is the progenitor of many Cordovas from El Paso and Southern New Mexico. Ancestors of Cristobal's wife, Feliciana Orcasitas have been in New Mexico since 1600. There are also a couple of scandalous issues back in the 1600s that are interesting.

Regards, Dave Nelson, Folsom, CA

I have extensive records of Cordovas from El Paso, TX, and southern New Mexico. My wife's Cordova ancestors start with Cristobal Maria Cordova, who came over from Spain, probably around 1775. He was the Teniente at El Carrizal near El Paso.

I have 327 names on the list of his descendants. Most live in New Mexico, Texas, Arizona and California. So far I have found no connection between Cristobal and the Cordovas from Northern New Mexico.

Contact me if you have any questions. Dave Nelson, Folsom, CA.

Do you have a marriage place for them? I only have that she was about 14 and it happened around 1863. I do not know where either one of them were at in 1860. There is a family tale that either her (Altagracia) or Ascencion Garcia, ("Chris'" wife) was adopted by a white woman and raised by her, so their name (whichever one it was) might not be correct. The story is that during the war they were captured by the Indians, or they were Indian, but after the war the children were taken away from the Indians, so she was either Indian or not, but given to this white woman to raise. Have you heard any rumours about Altagracia or Ascencion like that? I am unsure which one the story was about.

They have really messed his name up on his funeral notice, but here it is if you would like it.

Mr. Crencio "Chris" Cordova
September 20 1889 - March 18, 1962
Durango, Colorado - Greenmount Cemetery

Bearers
Benito Archuleta
Joe B.
I am glad that you re-posted the original message.. I couldn't seem to find it in the message boards. I have no clue why I made a new thread for my reply. The Bersabe in my tree was born in around 1870 as well and the siblings I have for her are Melton, Casmira, Jose, Crescencio and Elijio... I'm sure I am missing some. It definetly looks like the same family from a glance.
Gloria, would you mind telling me what the note was that you had connected to the parents of Crescencio? I have not found much information on them, just the 1870, 1880 and 1900 census' and what information I could get from those. Thanks!
Over the years I have created a large CORDOVA database. I checked for your Crescencio and found a note related to the parents of your Crescencio.

Perhaps you know the person who posted this note but if not you may want to connect with her because she certainly seems to be related to your ancestor on the CORDOVA side.

Please reconnect with me as you learn more because I am always interested in expanding what I know in my CORDOVA database. I love connecting researchers.

SOURCE: Cordovas in NM
Posted by: Kathi kazamhsd@@earthlink.net
Date: June 25, 2000 at 23:56:01
I am looking for connections to Cordovas in NM, specifically in the Cabezon and Casa de Salazar area. Senona Cordova b. 1907, dau. of Bersabe Cordova and Telesfor Lobato, her parents were Maria Altagracia Mestas and Marcelino Cordova. She was born in the 1870's. Bersabe Cordova was married to Nicolas Mestas of Cabezon, she was widowed in 1890-91. I know Bersabe Cordova had sisters--Trinidad, Casimira, brothers---Meliton, Jose, Crecencio, Eligio. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I was born and raised in Trinidad, Las Animas County, Colorado and have lived in northern NM since 1969. My ancestors in Colorado have been there over 150 years; they came from NM to CO

Gloria Cordova
Patricio Cordova - Walsenburg, Huerfano, CO & Denver, CO

Hello fellow Cordovas,

I’m hoping someone can help me locate the family of my great-grandfather, Patricio Cordova. Between Apr 1881 – 1899, there is not one record of him on Ancestry that I can find. I apologize now for this long post but perhaps it will help another person in their research. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

He was born on March 17, 1881 {IGI record states “of, Walsenburg, Huerfano County, CO”} and baptized on March 27, 1881, in Walsenburg, Huerfano County, CO [IGI record]

Patricio pops back up on the radar when he married Maria Guadalupe Cruz, daughter of P. Santiago Cruz & Maria Rejopia {unknown}, on April 21, 1900 in North Veta, Huerfano, CO.

On June 29, 1900, the US census recorded Patricio & Lupe living in Walsenburg. Both Patricio’s parents were listed as being born in New Mexico. Living next door is Leandro & Cecilla (Romero) Cordova and their five children. I thought his could be his parents but Patricio is not listed living with them in the 1885 Colorado census and the five children living out of the 13 Leandro & Cecilla had are listed on the census. A few houses down on the other side is the Gavino & Sofia (Vigil) Cordova family.

In the 1910 census, Patricio & Lupe are living in St. Mary’s, Huerfano, CO with their son Gaspar (age 1) & daughter Teresina (6 months). Patricio is a farm hand and his parents are listed as born in Colorado. Right next door is Abel & Henia Cordova and their four children. Abel is a farmer and the son of Teofilo & Maria Andrella (Vigil) Cordova.

On April 26, 1914, Patricio married Marie “Mary” Ygnacia Gonzalez, in Walsenburg. I have found no record of Lupe being alive or dead after the 1910 census.

On Patricio’s May 1919 WWI registration card, He is living on W. Sixth St. in Walsenburg. Patricio was employed by the Colorado Fuel & Iron Company and worked in the mines.

On the 1920 census, Patricio and Mary were living on West Fourth Street in Walsenburg with two sons, Gasper and Ernesto (6 months old, listed as Seberiano though), and niece, Lucia Chavez. Patricio is a driver for the coal mine and list his father was born in Colorado and his mother was born in New Mexico.

Between 1920 and 1929, Patricio and Mary had four more children: Louis (1923), Patricio Jr. (1924), Margaret (1925), & Abel (1926). Patricio Jr. died 9 months later of Pneumonia and was buried at St. Mary’s South Cemetery. Abel died before 1930 and his resting place is unknown. The family moved to Denver, CO shortly after.

In 1930, Patricio, Mary, Ernesto, Louis, and Margaret are living on Curtis Ave in Denver with Gasper & his family. Patricio is a laborer in a mattress factory. Both of his parent birth place is listed as U.S. but no one else on the census is. When I asked my Grandmother, Margaret, about this new lead, she said that her Dad told her that his family came over from Spain.

Patricio is listed as living at 2752 Curtis St. in Denver with Mary in the 1937 Denver Directory. Minnie Cordova lives at this address as well.

Patricio died around 1937 – 1941 in Denver. My grandmother said that her father was buried in Denver but cannot pin point the specific year. The 1941 Denver Directory, Mary is listed as the widow of Patrick living at 506 29th Street with Louis and Margaret. Both Mary and Margaret work at the American Spring Cushion Mfg. Company. Before 1945, the remaining Cordova family (Mary, Ernest, Louis, Margaret, Gasper’s family) moved to Los Angeles, California.

This is the biggest brick wall I have and would love any information. I have tried every resource I can locate.I have not found one good lead on the Cordova emigration from Spain to Colorado and I am half tempted to hop on a plane to Colorado or even to Salt Lake City, Utah.

Have a wonderful holiday weekend!
