Core family photos from Columbus Grove, Ohio

I have recently posted about 15 photographs from an old album, most of which were taken in Columbus Grove, Ohio. These are likely from the families of either John and Viletta (Norton) Core, Adam and Agnes (Smith) Gettman, or John and Elizabeth (McDole) Norton, all of whom lived in the Columbus Grove area in the second half of the 19th century.

I suspect that several of the photos of ladies from the 1880s-1890s are daughters of Adam Gettman.

A few may relate to the family of David and Rebecca (Layton) Core, also of Putnam County.

Any help in identifying these photos is greatly appreciated.

http://ferenczifamily.blogspot.com/2011/07/gettman-core-nort...

http://ferenczifamily.blogspot.com/2011/07/gettman-core-nort...

Hi Peter,
Have you got the birth certificate for James Russell Core, born 1899? If not you can see it on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
It is a paying site but you get a lot for the 7 pounds. The birth was in Pettinain where my James Core-brother of your Archibald-lived in his old age in the 1870s.He was in a cottage called Glenboa or Glenbow and his will in 1875 requested his unmarried daughter be allowed to stay on there.Maybe your James was born there.James would have been illegitimate if the surname given was the mother's and the father's name was not listed but occasionally a correction was added later giving the name of the father.Check out RCEs (corrected entries) in the help section. Also have a look for Mum and son in the 1901 census just in case she was using the father's name for the boy-I've seen that in my own tree.
Joan

Thank you Joan. Every bit of information is useful where it may help solve a mystery.
Let me ask for some advise. Further down the line I have a James Russel Core(7)b.30 Jan 1899 to Mary Jane Catherine Core(6),James Russel(5),Archibald(4),David(3),James Cor (2),Thomas(1). The question is, his mother is a Core, no mention of the father. He carries the name Core. How would one find the father or would I assume he is illegitiment. Would original parish records reveal this??

Peter D Core

Hi,
This Lanarkshire Core family is also among my ancestors. The baptismal record for David ,born 1759 in Covington and Thankerton, states his father James Core was a weaver in Braeside (of Waterhill-not 100% clear) in Cov and Tha.The mother -Marion Easton. On the same page there is the baptism of Rachel Core in December 1765 to the same parents.Going back a generation ,Thomas Cor and Rachel Fisher registered the baptism of son James Cor on 4th February 1726.They were living in Cumberland House,Cov and Tha.From the Scotlandspeople site ,David Core and Isabella Martin actually had 11 children-Margaret in 1789,James in 1790,Archibald in 1793,James in 1794,(my own ggggrandfather ),Archie again in 1797,David in 1799,Marion in 1802,Thomas in 1804,Helen in 1806,Isobel in 1808 and Jean in 1813.Isabella Martin's brother Archibald married David's sister Jean Core.Hope this is useful.
Joan

My Grandfather (David Core) being the eldest son was named after his father ie.David Core (who married three times - to a Wood then Dixon and I forget the third name.) His father, ie. my great great Grand Father married Jean Frame. His parents (ie. my great great great Grandparents were David Core (born 1759) and Isabel Martin (born 1768). The last piece of information I have is the names of David Core's parents (ie. my great, great, great, great Grandparents) - James Core and Marian Easton. I have never searched ancestry.com for info on the Core's, but may decide one day to do so, to obtain more info. Unfortunately, I have no pictures of any of the above mentioned (apart from my grandpa). Was James Russel Core one of the sons of David Core and Isabel Martin or David Core and Jean Frame? We were not aware of any Core's in Canada and so assume that your family came to Canada quite some time ago?

The David Core you refer to was my great grandfather and Marion Dixon my great grandmother. My father (Douglas Core) was born in Uddington (near Lanark)to David Core and Marion Watson. It is a bit of a complicated family tree as I believe my great grandfather married 3 times. My father was the only one to have children out of a family of six. Our family immigrated to Canada in 1957 and all of the Core's left in Scotland from that line are deceased. it was therefore interesting to hear that this ancestry is still alive and well in the USA.

Regardless of where the Core family originated, they were living in Virginia in the 18th century, a time when there were many instances of people being captured by Indians and later released. So I'm yet not going to dismiss the possibility entirely. Frankly I had always discounted the story until I read this thread and realized that perhaps it might go back farther than our Granny's imagination. ;o)
Re: Core descendants of Native Americans?

I ran across this thread while searching for info on our Core/Bleeks family from Defiance County and Crawford County Ohio.

Years ago my mother-in-law told me that her mother and grandmother said there was Indian or Gypsy blood in their Core family. The way it was related to me was that one of the ancestors married a gypsy or Indian, and the rest of the family was none too happy about it. The implication was that this happened sometime in the mid to late 19th century.

We all know that there are lots of family stories that are nothing more than tall tales, but there are also plenty that have a little tiny nugget of truth in them. After seeing this thread, I'm beginning to wonder if latter might be the case.

Since our story was passed on through several generations, it's entirely possible that the story changed over the years. Instead of this happening in the 1800's, it could have actually been in the 1700's, and instead of an ancestor marrying a Native American, an ancestor could have been held captive.

Our descendency is from Jacob Core (b 1772 Virginia, d 1850 Ohio) and his wife Mary_______, John (b 1802 Virginia, d 1859 Ohio)and his wife Rebecca Doney, Jacob Core (b 1829 Ohio, d 1890 Ohio)and his wife Mary Jane Bleeks, and Charles Sumner Core, b 1856 Ohio, d 1933 Indiana)and his wife Louella Smith.

As this is a relatively old thread, I am wondering if in recent anything has been discovered that might shed some light on the possibility of Native American ancestors in the Core family.

Frank Timperley CORE was from Manchester England.
He served in the British army, in Curragh in Ireland, in England and in India. He was discharged as unfit for service because of a recurring knee injury, caused by being kicked by a horse. He was on a posting to India when his wife in England became pregnant with Madeline and that maybe accounts for why Madeline was adopted. He also had a daughter Marion.

The Italian surname "Core"

Is anyone researching the Italian surname "Core"?

I see many posts for the English surname, but none for the Italian. I believe the Italian "Core" is a spelling variant of "Cuore," which means "heart."

My great grandmother's surname was Core, and she was from the town of Controguerra, in Abbruzzi. I know she had a father named Sabatino, but I have not had any luck finding information beyond that.

Any help/knowledge/connections are welcome and appreciated!

John William Core - 1815 in Mo. Terr. that became Ark.

I have the Core family of Arkansas and California back to 1815. Came here from Mississippi. I believe John Wm.'s ancestors came from Germany to Penn. then to North Carolina where John Wm. was born in 1787. Then John Wm. left No. Car. and traveled through Georgia and to Miss. and Arkansas. I am looking for a connection in any of these states to a John Wm. Core born 1787 in No. Car. married to a Hannah (last name unknown) born in Georgia in 1800. I can prove that in Jan 1815 they were in Lawrence County in the Missouri Terr. (that became Lawrence County, Ark in 1919). Can't find them in Miss, Ga. or No. Car. Possible John Wm. Core left No. Car. because of a fight with his father.

The Pine Bluff library has an obituary project that allows you to go in and research names. They have all the Cores in one section, etc. If you Google the Pine Bluff library they have info on obtaining obituaries. Jesse Core III died in New Orleans and is buried in Pine Bluff with other members of the family. His father was Jesse Rozelle Core Jr. His grandfather was Jesse Rozelle Core who died in 1937. Its a very interesting family.

And we have not been able to find any information on his Mother and her family. We always were told her name was Anna Maria Hughes, married to Michael Core, but on the census she is listed as Persis Ann but all the other information is correct. Does this fit with your Catherine? There is a Catherine listed as one of her children. There were 9 siblings, I believe. Lewis A., Elizabeth, Christian, Jerusha, Sarah, Catherine, Nathaniel, Andrew S., and William Core.
