Daniel Corl - Cabarrus County, NC

To anyone interested in a Daniel Corl of Cabarrus or Rowan County North Carolina, who was a teacher in the 1855-1865 time frame --

I just scanned a student's Reward of Merit certificate for an ancestor that identifies Daniel Corl as the teacher. It appears that he filled out the certificate and signed it himself.

The image is posted on the Patterson - Bost - Maguire - Haller Family Tree. Search for Martha Juliann Foil or File. You are welcome to copy it. It is a high resolution photo, so you can magnify the image to see the handwriting and coloring easily.

If anyone can narrow down the date and school of this certificate, I would appreciate it.

Enjoy!

Cheri

Re: Michael Corl (b. 1791) m. Pheby Fridly 1818

I'm trying to figure out a connection to Michael & Phebe (Fridley) Corl buried in Heaton's Point Baptist Cemetery and Solomon & Louisa (Marple) Corl who is buried in Searl's Ridge Cemetery, Selby Twp. Bureau County, IL. He and his wife Louisa are both buried there. Their stones read:

Solomon Corl
died Sept 1, 1852
aged 52ys 11ms 15d

Louisa
wife of Solomon Corl
died Nov 24, 1866
aged 58ys 11ms 11ds

They are buried near Lieurenah (Lorena) Misback who I beleive might be their daughter. Her stone has quite a bit of damage, but from an old photo of her stone it reads:
Lieurenah
wife of Lorenz Misback
died Dec 21, 1863
aged 28ys 17ds

Lorena's marriage certificate is difficult to read but looks like Corl or Cord and the fact that she is buried near Solomon & Louisa Corl seems more than a coincidence. Louisa, Solomon's wife, was a Marple, daughter of David Marple and Margaret Purtlebaugh (who is also buried at Searl's Ridge).

Any information about this Corl family in Bureau County, IL would be appreciated.

dorrie

Hi Rachel, I just caught your message. You're right on both countries. There's a line from Irland, and even a County Corl, somewhere. But I kinda lean to Germany. I found two of my ancestors arrived in Philadelphia in the late 1700s. Conrad, and I think Peter. One settled in Chester County, Pa. and the other went to North Carolina. I can't connect them to me just yet but an educated guess is the one from Chester County, Pa. is an ancestor. I've never came across a Corl from Irland. I'm having trouble with behind my Gr Gr Grandfather, Alfred. I can't find his parents. He married a lady from Annville, Lebanon Co., Pa. then after the Civil War came to Marysville, Perry Co., Pa. where I live. (it's just north of Harrisburg, Pa.)
There is a record of Veterans of the Rev, War with the name Corl in New York, Just do some fishing around in Ancestry, com and you'll find quiet a few Corls

Bil Corl, pugwam@comcast.net, any more questions just email me at my address.

Corl is German from the original Correll (or variations of that spelling). The Corl's came over in the 1730's-1750's primarily from Germany, seeking escape from generations of wars, and land they could own free and clear. Most were pious Lutherans. At first they settled in PA, but as lands became more scarce, they began to immigrate to central North Carolina, Rowan County (which was all of Central NC in those days), landing at Philadelphia, then taking the Wagon Road south to NC.

Re: 1699 North Carolina

The Corl's were some of the Palatine Germans who migrated to America beginning in the 1730's-1750's primarily. Nearly all were pious Lutherans, but tired of constant war and looking to own their own lands free and clear. With the House of Hanover on the British throne, German migration to the British Colonies became a natural thing. The first waves settled in PA and became part of the Pennsylvania Dutch. But as land became more scarce and expensive, later arrivals traveled from Philadelphia taking the wagon road south to central North Carolina, where land was still plentiful and cheaper. The original surname was Correll (or some variation of that) and yet all branches seemed to have changed uniformly to "Corl". An historian of North Carolina commented that until just a couple decades before the Civil War much of central NC near Charlotte had the same dialect and accents as the Pennsylvania Dutch due to the strong German immigration. The Scots-Irish settled at the same time but stuck a little closer to the towns of central NC. The Corl's of NC, like all the Lutherans and German Reformed, tended to be strong Patriots when the War broke out. They had left Europe to escape "royal" meddling.

Johan Peter Corl (b 1734 Germany) migrated to NC, via Philadelphia in 1751 at age 17. His father, Peter M Corl, had already migrated first to PA then south to NC before Johan Peter arrived. Johan Peter purchased 150 Acres in Second Dutch Creek, (about 5 miles east of modern China Grove, NC) in Rowan County, in 1778, probably near Shupings Mill or Lower Stone Church. He served in the Rowan County Militia and a record says he kept guard in the jail, Aug. 22, 1778. He married Anna Eva Troutman (b. 26 Aug, 1746, Gross Germany; d. 1842, Rowan County, NC).

Peter and Anna Eva Troutmann's children:
Catherine (Jacob Boger)
Peter Jr.
Jacob
Daniel (b. 28 Mar., 1783, Salisbury, NC)
Sally (Nicholas Cress)
Moses
Elizabeth
Mary (Thomas Goodman)

Daniel Corl's had many children, including a son, David (b. 20 Feb. 1813).

David had 7 children, including a son, James T (Thomas?) Corl (b. 1860, Concord, NC) who moved to MO, and eventually to Texas. The rest of Johan Peter Corl's descendants mostly stayed in North Carolina through the middle of the 20th Century.

My brother submitted DNA to the FAmily Tree DNA project for the Curl lines, but we did not match anyone there. A while ago I had my brother join the Correll project and found we had one match, one marker away. We are haplotype R1a and descend from the Leonard Corl line of Pavia Bedford Co. You mentioned there was someone else who joined from the Leonard Corl line? Do you remember who that might have been?

Many thanks, Suzanne Currell

Hendrick Corl

I'm looking for information on the ancestors of Hendrick Corl, probably born in or around Schenectady, NY around or before 1735. All I know about him is that he was married to Maria Olin.

Hendrick and Maria had a son John Corl (b. 1757, d. 1842 in Schenectady). He married Susanna Van Vorst

John and Susanna had a son John Baptist Corl (b. 1792 in Schenectady, NY, d. 1853 in Ellicott, NY). He married Cornelia Van Vleck.

John Baptist and Cornelia had a daughter, Melissa Corl (b. 1830 in Edinburgh, NY, and d. 1915 in Erie County, PA). She married Judson W. Stowe. Melissa and Judson are my Great Great Grandparents.

I have not been able to find out who Hendrick's parents are. I can't even trace the family out of the US. I suspect that the family is of Dutch origin, because Hendrick is a Dutch name, and the Schnectady/Albany area was settled by many Dutch immigrants. It's possible that the name was once spelled "Korl", since the Dutch prefer "K" to "C" in most words.

If anyone has information, please respond. Thanks.

Eric Hatch

I've done some snooping around and found a Conrad Corl in the 1700s that settled in Chester County, Pa. just outside Philadelphia. Then there was another Corl, first name escapes me but he settled in Rowan County, NC, Raleigh area. There were some Corl women that debarked from ships in Phila., My line came from Lebanon County, Pa. namely Annville, My gr gr grandfather was Alfred and he moved after the Civil War to Marysville, Perry County, Pa. just north of Harrisburg. His kids scattered around the Harrisburg area where the jobs were found. I've done quite a bit of researching here in Perry County,as well as Dauphin County. I found other Corls I have no idea where they came from but the names are sonomous with the Lebanon Corls. I have to get off my but and go to Lebanon County Historical Society to continue earlier that Alfred. He was born in 1833 in Lebanon.
Bill Corl

Ralph Elingsworth is my grandfather. His father was Benjamin Franklin Corl, my great grandfather. My grandfather had siblings named Walter (who passed when he was a child), Luther, and Beatrice (and perhaps another sister who had passed when she was really young). So, I think that our Corl's (although probably related further back) are not the same direct line. I have no dates for these people, but can say that I would imagine my Grandfather Ralph was born sometime in the late 1890's as his wife Adelaide (Leque) was born with in that time frame. For some reason, all the other PA Corl's seem to lead to another family, so I am still wondering where we come from! Any help would be great!

The Corl side I'm related to originated from Centre County, as far as I have been told. What is funny is I married a guy from Harrisburg, who had a 3rd grade teacher named Corl..lol, wonder if we were related.
Thanks Bill
Cheryll

The past querys have no dates so the info is confusing
Bill Corl
pugwam@comcast.net

Ralph, Harry & G. Donald were all from Ardara, PA, which is in Western PA. Check my tree, and you can find info there. How are they connected to your family? I've been trying to figure out where the line goes, and if we are related to the Corl's in Harrisburg area.
Cheryll

Ralph was born somewhere in Western PA. I am part of the Corl's that moved to Lancaster... so that's where the Ralph line went. I dont have much information on the line prior to Ralph's parents, my great grandparents, and my cousins and I are still trying to search to see what country they came over from.

Hi Rachael
Where is Ralph from? There are three or more lines you can follow in Pa. I got back as far as 1790 and found Conrad and I think Phillip Corl. One settled in Chester county, Pa. and the other went south to Rowan County, NC. From Chester County, the Corls went to Lancaster and Lebanon County, Pa. Mine came from Lebanon. They went on farther west and helped settle the West.
I live outside Harrisburg Pa. and found my ancestors nearby.
Bill Corl

Amanda,

I believe this is the correct line you are looking for:

David Corl, father of M.J., b 20 February 1813 d 29 July 1871 bu Lowerstone UCC married
4 April 1844 Juliann Barnhardt b 12 February 1823 d 17 June 1883 buried Lowerstone UCC, daughter of George Bernhardt and Martha Reed.
Children: (census)
George Franklin Columbus b c 1846
Martha J b c 1851
Marshall J. Butler b c1855 - "MJ Corl"
Albert M b c 1858
M. M. b 1860 (1860 census this could be James)
James b 1860 – later moved to Houston, TX
Wm b c 1863
Laura b c 1865
Records show David Corl as owning 5 slaves.

MJ Corl is my g-grandfather. Seems "M.M." on the church records is James. Not unusual for people to go by two different names in that time/place. Juliann is another example. In a court document in Cabbarrus county NC, July 1878 she is listed as Julia A Corl. Another poster contributed this about James Corl:

James T(probably "Y" as you indicate?) Corl married Martha "Mattie" Whaley in Lawrence County, Missouri
March 9, 1892.

They are listed on the Jasper County, Missouri 1900 Census as follows:

Corl James born Apr 1860 North Carolina (Both parents also North Carolina) - see above
Mattie (wife) born Aug 1868 Mo
Arthur (son) born Apr 1893
Mary (dau) born Mar 1896
Julia (dau) born 1897
Harold (son) born 1899

Handwriting on this census is very difficult to read and the children
identified as Julia and Harold are just a "best guess" as to what is
written.

A daughter Loula Mae was also born to this family.

The family later moved to Houston, Texas. Martha "Mattie" Whaley Corl was
still living as of July 1942.

Texas birth records-on line, show Loula Mae Corl married Henry Phillip Myers
and had a son born 1947.

- - -
David Corl
Daniel Corl
Johan Peter Corl (b.
Re: Alfred Corl

I have some pension material on soldiers from Co. C, 208th PA. In one for Private Patrick Feeney, there's an affidavit from Albert Corl that says he was 2nd lieutenant commanding Co. C at the time of Feeney's injury on April 2nd in front of Petersburg. As I'm sure you know, Captain Dalien had been assigned to the brigade staff as an engineer and was mortally wounded in the battle of Ft. Stedman. Lt. Wm. C.J. Smith of Company C was an aide-de-camp before Petersburg. I assume their absence is why command devolved on 2nd Lt. Corl.

I am working on a book based on the letters of my great grandfather, John Given, Jr., who became a civilian clerk in the Army of the Potomac after three years with the 25th Indiana. Company C of the 208th plays a small role in the book. My ggrandfather was with the 1st Brigade, Third Division, 9th A.C. as a clerk to Captain Batty, the brigade's AQM.

If you have any more info on your gggrandfather's experience at Ft. Stedman or in the events of early April, I'd be very interested in learning about it. Do you have his complete service records? Did he have a pension? Was there a widow's pension? I have gotten records of other pertinent men, but his name didn't come up for me until I was going through Private Feeney's file. Also: was Alfred Corl Irish, or at least Irish American?

I'd very much appreciate any help.

Best,
Emily

Mary Scouten married Fred Corl. I need to find a family member who can verify some information for me. Ruth Scouten Baker was my Grandmother; Mary, her sister. Mary Scouten, Edward, Charles, Ruth, Harry, Mabel, and maybe other siblings were placed in the Cortland Children's Home in 1910. Phyllis Perry has this info on original documentation. I cannot seem to get in touch with her. Please let me know if anyone knows how. I lost contact with her in 2001. Benjamin was Mary's father, and Phyllis says that Mabel Scouten is the mother's name, but Viola Chapin is the mother listed on my grandmother's SS app. Mary and others were born on the Onondaga Reservation. They left it sometime between 1901 and 1904. Grandma Ruth was born in Truxton in 1904. In 1910 they were all placed in this home. I think that it is possble that Mabel could have been the original mother's name, and maybe she was the one placed in the County Farm in 1910, severely ill. Maybe Benjamin married Viola after that, and then he also married Nellie Millard Henry in 1922. He died in a Nursing Home in Cortland, she died in 1929. There was also Benjamin R. and Harvey both born in the late 1880's. Please help, if you can.

I have found 1920 censes for Texas with all info on my great grandfather and grandmother and their children. It shows my great grandfather was 59. I can't find anything on my greatgrandfather except that he was born in NC and so was his father and mother. Any idea where to go from here. Unless I find some record of my great grandparents marriage, I have no idea how to find my great grandmothers maiden name.
Thanks for any help given.

Am looking for CORL family members linked to Uriah R. Corl (descended from Peter and Elizabeth 1700s) from 1850s PA census data. Wife was Mary Jane Shirey, children were Samuel Shirey Corl, Jr., Henry R., William N., Amanda E., Jennie S., Maria S., Robert M., Della, and Uriah R. Jr.(all buried in Mogadore, OH). Two graves for Uriah and Mary Jane - one in Shippensburg, PA (shared with Uriah R., Jr.) and one in Mogadore. Have pics of all tombstones and am eager to verify tree but cannot prove all data. Reply to thedaileys@erols.com please. Thank you.

Re: Michael Corl (b. 1791) m. Pheby Fridly 1818

Hello Cousin. This is the information I have. I'm also trying to find out Michael's parents and antecedants. I know this must be someplace because my grandmother, Nellie L. Corl (G.W. Corl's daughter who married Merton Chase -- my father was Cecil Corl Chase who died 1954) was a D.A.R. so presumably she was able to provide them with a pedigree dating to a relative in the Revolutionary War. Anyhow, here's the info -- "Walnut Jan 1st 1910 at Walnut Bureau Co. Ills. written by G.W. Corl of the 3rd generation so far as my knowledge goes -- my grandfather Corl came from Germany sometime in 1770. I never heard much about him. Apparently born about 1730." This document indicates that this info is from a book "The True Story of the Galveston Flood as Told By the Survivors." I have all Michael's children's names, most dates of birth and death and war records. I have all G.W.'s children's names and dates of birth. I also have some miscellaneous info about some other relatives (Mariah's husband, P.M. Moodie was in the Civil War. They married 1860 -- you probably already knew this): Oliver Kimmell, George Willie Dennis Hummell, William Hummell, Joseph Robinson and Harry Strawn. Send me your e-mail address if you want to share more info. Thanks. I'm at DUCorpsTx@netscape.net

Corl DNA matching

My father submitted DNA for comparison to other Corl/Correll submitters in hopes of other researchers who appear to be related. If you're interested in participating, go to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~allcorrell/

My tree goes back to Samuel Corl (abt 1800-1883 and lived in Lancaster, PA and then Portage Co, OH). I know that someone from the Leonard Corl line (1755-1847and lived in Pavia, PA) also submitted, as well as many others.

Would be great if several others would submit DNA.
