I recently obtained a copy of part of my family tree which places Robert Cormier at the top (early 1600's). I just learned that his parents are Abraham Cormier (1590 - 1628) and Catherine (leMoyne) Cormier. My ancestry.com membership is close to expiring, but my email is shaunc187@suddenlink.net if I can be of any assistance.

Sincerely, Shaun Cormie

PETER DORIC son of Louis Cormier and Flore Alaire is my great grandfather- his daughter BLANCHE is my grandmother. Information for Peter's ancesters has been plentiful due to all the hard work of the many Cormier researchers. However, I can't seem to fill in the details for PETER, his wife EXILIA BISSONNETTE, and his daughter EXILIA. I am trying to understand why I can't find them in the 1930 census. I am looking for daughter EXILIA after she got out of high school. I found city directory information for PETER up to 1947 and mother EXILIA up to 1951 but no info about death. Can anyone help?
Sandra

My mother's parents were Margaret Ann Bruce and John Duffy. She passed away on November 30, 2011 at the age of 91. I recorded all the stories that she told me. She remembered her grandfather, Julien. She also told me that her mother spoke French and that when her relatives came to visit, her dad would leave the house and not permit her to speak French. John Duffy was French. He is quoted in an newspaper article: Came from a family of 11 children.father was French while his mother was Scottish. When they met he could only speak French and she could only speak Gaelic. They had to learn English to court together.)but that is another story.)
Julien Bruce's, name is recorded in the church records as: Bousse; Broissard;Brussard;Brougais: The given names are repeated through the generations. John Bruce,1837, Julien's 1852, brother and Joseph born 1842, all had children named John Henry, Augustine (female) Flora and the names carried on through the generations. I have an uncle Julien, uncle John, ...I have done the Bruce family but got stuck, like many others on the Duffy side. Thanks for the info on Julie Bourgeois.

Julien's parents are Jean and JULIE (Bourgeois)!

Here follows what I wrote about this couple on the Bourgeois Genforum, from what I have personally researched, when someone asked me the question of where I got Julie's birth since it was not in the record of her baptism:

I got the information on Julie's birth from the fact that a census was taken by the new seigneur, Sir Isaac Coffin in 1806 of the Acadian families who migrated to the Magdalen Islands from Miquelon. In that year, the family of Joseph Bourgeois was actually living somewhere between Etang-du-Nord and Cap-aux-Meules, both villages (on the middle island of the Magdalens chain) and which were part of the mother parish of Havre-Aubert (the only parish in existence there until 1819!). After that year, they came under the ministry of the parish of Ste-Madeleine at Havre-aux-Maisons.

The Havre-Aubert pastors ministered to the entire Islands' residents in several different localities including, Havre-aux-Maisons, Cap-aux-Meules, Etang-du-Nord, Basssin, Grosse-Ile and Entry Island, all while keeping one register at Havre-Aubert for the entire population!

Sometimes, it will give the place of residence but for the majority of acts found therein, it simply says "of these islands" or "of this parish". So, as you can see, I did not rely on just the parish registers for my sources of information, but also on census records and histories of the Islands, as well as other clues found in all the parish registers (baptisms, marriages and deaths) for my conclusions.

While Julie's baptismal record does NOT mention where they lived (or where she was born), this alternate census record does (it can be found in Paul Hubert's volume, Les Iles-de-la-Madeleine et les Madelinots, in one of the appendices at the end of the book)! Living that far away from the church explains the gap between her birth in May of 1812 and her baptism a year later in October of 1813, and why she was baptized at home by a layperson, in case they never made it to the church for the full baptism ceremony. In those years children were born at home, not in the church building. To reiterate my findings, her father's family was censused at Etang-du-Nord in 1831, so I presume I am correct that they actually lived in this locality.

And... if I remember correctly, another reason why Julie wasn't baptized till the following year was because the pastor was absent from Havre-Aubert at the time she was born. Father Jean-Baptiste Allain, the pastor of Havre-Aubert, was in Quebec City asking the bishop to provide for the physical needs of the parish (a rectory, vestments, etc), and where he died unexpectedly in June of 1812.

His replacement, a Father Dufresne, who was en route to the Islands in November of that year (1812) was actually shipwrecked and drowned before he got there. So the parishioners there went without a priest until the following spring. Thus the laypersons' baptisms by necessity. Often these were done by Louise Dugas, the most prominent Magdalen Islands midwife, and my direct ancestor, or by one of the appointed "anciens" in the parish.

Finally, Father Beaubien, who arrived in the spring of 1813, ended up baptizing Julie with the full ceremonies. Like I said, one has to consult the histories of the Islands for the fuller picture. This info came from books by Sister Rose-Delima Gaudet, CND and Chantal Naud.

As for Julie's marriage record, you will not find it! She married about 1833 or 1834, and at that time a second parish had opened at Havre-aux-Maisons to serve the inhabitants of that village and the Etang-du-Nord and Cap-aux-Meules' parishioners as it was closer to them than Havre-Aubert (please consult a map of the Islands to see my point here).

The parish registers of Havre-aux-Maison from September 1831 to December 1839 are lost, and unfortunately, because they would undoubtedly have contained your Julie's marriage to Jean Broussais [Brousset]. That they married at that time is the closest I can estimate to set forth the act of baptism for their daughter Henriette Brousset in September of 1835.

If you ever studied the islands' parish histories and/or history of the clergy assigned there, you will understand that the parishes there were often placed back and forth under different parish jurisdictions and pastoral responsibilities. The Etang-du-Nord area came under Havre-Aubert, then went to Havre-aux-Maisons, then back to Havre-Aubert, until they built their own chapel in 1839, a mission chapel served by Havre-Aubert. It became its own parish only in 1875.

I believe that Jean and Julie lived at Etang-du-Nord, which accounts again for the gap of time between Henriette's birth and baptism, plus it would seem logical that she settled or even lived with her parents' family, as Jean had no family at the Magdalens, would it not?

After Henriette's birth, Jean and Julie moved to Ile St-Pierre (BEFORE going to the Codroy Valley of Newfoundland), where we find the births of more of their children: Jean-Henri in 1838; Sidonie-Marie in 1840; Julie in 1843; an unnamed male child born and died there in 1845 and Marie-Rose in 1846. Jean and Julie only went to Codroy after that date, where Julien, Joseph, Augustina & Flora were born. To date, I have found nothing more concerning Henriette, and I presume she died unmarried, possibly even young in Codroy. I do not believe she was the Henriette LeBlanc you found who later married a Bourgeois. If anything, that Henriette could be Henriette Doucet, the widow of Gabriel LeBlanc of Cheticamp.

As for Jean BRUCE being "Scottish", I have information from another descendant that he was born in St. Malo, France. So is he Scottish or really French? I think possibly the latter as he married a French Acadian, and obviously knew enough French to make his livelihood at St-Pierre before going to Newfoundland. Because Newfoundland was predominantly English and Scottish, he perhaps changed his French surname (Brousset or Broussais) to simply John Henry "Bruce" to fit in with the rest of the Anglo population there.

Dennis Boudreau (Magdalen Islands genealogist)

Pierre Cormier's Identity Discovered!

Hello All,

There has been a breakthrough in the positive identification of Pierre Cormier, the husband of Isabelle Chiasson, which has only come to light this past month. If you will remember, our ancestor Pierre Cormier could not have been the son of Marguerite Cyr and her husband, as this Pierre died in Québec City in 1757 (according to the Notre-Dame Church parish registers).

At the end of January, a document that was located in the Archives of France was sent to the Centre d’études acadiennes in Moncton by a professor from the United States. It turned out to be a sort of census listing of Acadians living at Ile St-Jean (PEI) and the Magdalen Islands (QC) dated September of 1763.

In that document, living at Tracadie, PEI were the newly-wed couple, Isabelle Chiasson and her husband, Pierre (not listed as Cormier) but as Manon. No children were born to the couple yet as none were listed. Their son, Nicolas, ancestor of a branch of the Cormiers at the Magdalen Islands was only to be born the following year at Ile St-Jean on 4 Apr 1764.

According to Stephen White, nor could he have been the Pierre Cormier, son of Marie-Anne Cyr, who was with his brother Jean-François at Fort Beausejour (in August of 1763), a month before this newly-discovered document was created. Nor could have been the Pierre, son of François Cormier and Anne Cyr, who all together were deported to Georgia in 1755. Nor is there a hint that he might have been related to them anywhere through examination of godparents.

Those of us familiar with Acadian nicknames know that “Manon or Nanon” is a nickname for a woman named “Anne or Marie-Anne”, so thus, Pierre would be known as “Pierre à Anne dit Manon”. The only Pierre then who fits this description is Pierre-Poncy Cormier, born and baptized at Beaubassin on 4/5 Dec 1741, the son of Germain Cormier and Anne Gaudet. This couple had removed to Ile St-Jean, where Germain Cormier died when Pierre was about 4 years old, and where his widow remarried Jean Bernard. Because his father had died, this document links him to his mother, Anne Gaudet, and he became known as Pierre à Manon, or as the document clearly states “Pierre Manon & his wife Isabelle Chiasson”. Plus, Pierre’s age in 1763 would make him 22 years old, just right for being eligible for marriage. Additionally, Anne Gaudet’s sister was Marie Gaudet, the second wife of Charlemagne Deveau, also mentioned in this document as living at Port Lajoie (Charlottetown). Another sister was Jeanne Gaudet married to Pierre Poirier living at St. Peter’s, PEI. As Steve explains, “either of these two aunts could have taken him in after his mother’s death, and which would explain how he made Isabelle Chiasson’s acquaintance and married her.”

Thus using all this circumstantial evidence, and being the only Pierre Cormier who fits by process of elimination, our ancestor then is truly Pierre-Poncy Cormier, the son of Germain Cormier (s/o Germain & Marie LeBlanc) and Anne Gaudet (d/o Guillaume & Marie Boudrot).

Dennis Boudreau

Hello,

I am also researching Sevigne Cormier (Unsure of the proper spelling). Our family records indicate that he was the child of Paul Cormier and Philomene Benoit, although I do not have dates for his parents. I have that his son was Alexon, who was my grandfather's father.
Would you be willing to share your tree/photos?

Good Luck!

Cathy

I'm trying to connect the dots for a relative on my maternal grandfather's side of the family. I'm looking for info regarding Sevigne / Sevenya / Sevenier Cormier's parents. He lived in Vermillion, LA from January 21, 1877 to December 1967. Family records state that his parents were named Paul Cormier and Philomene Benoit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. My grandfather is 90 and he's quite interested about our Cajun/Acadian lineage!

Thanks,

Cathy

Re: Cormier surname meaning?

Cormier is a French topographic name for someone who lived near a sorb (apple) or other service tree. It comes from corme, the name of the fruit for which the tree was cultivated, apparently of French origin. This is from Dictionary of Surnames by Hanks & Hodges, Oxford Press, 1994. I have heard the stories of Saint-Aubin-Du-Cormier, but have not seen it documented. There are discrepancies between versions, suggesting it's a myth, but it's close (130 miles) to La Rochelle, from which Robert Cormier first set off to America in 1644, so perhaps there's a link.

Hi Paul,

I stumbled across your notes on Pierre Cormier m. Marie-Anne Cyr. I've been working on this line for a number of years, and now I'm back after hiatus. We're preparing for a trip to Trois-Rivieres (Canada) where the family lived after leaving Acadia. Our line eventually ended in Green Bay, WI. Do you know anything of the churches in the area, cemeteries, etc? I have that they were buried / lived in St. Gregoire, County Nicolet, QC, Canada. I'm assuming that's Trois-Riviera, not Montreal (there's another St. Gregoire there). Thanks for help.
Gail Walraven

What information do you have? There is an Albert Cormier in my husband's family tree. His grandfather had a brother Albert. He was born on 21 Feb 1881 and died 10 Mar 1960 in Canada. His wife's name was Bertha. Where was your father born? You should really try to get a look at his birth certificate. This would list his parents names and get you started. Sometimes just one extra piece of information can really make a difference on your search. Let me know if you have any more information, no matter how insignificant you think it is, it could help determine which Albert Cormier is your family.

Theresa Cormier

David Cormier is my great-grandfather. I have his line done back to Robert Cormier. Many genealogies have his wife Susan Bastarache as the daughter of Moise Bastarache and Marguerite Allain. I have recently discovered that this is incorrect and that Susanne's parents are Pierre Bastarache and Marie Allain. I also have a picture of Susanne if you'd like a copy. you can contact me at paul@allain.com
