I have a James Cornelius who wit a deed in 1804 in Lancaster Dist, SC, then disappears from the record. He is part of a Cornelius family living in the Camp Creek area (lower southwest corner) of modern Lancaster Co. This Cornelius family must be a splinter of the better known Cornelius family of Amelia Co VA, because ot the repeated use of first name ROWLAND Cornelius for sons. Deed abstract below:

10 Feb 1804 John King of Lancaster Dist to Thomas Cauthon, Sr, $50 for 20a on lower Camp Cr. made over to John King from John Hicklin, 6 Feb 1804. Wits Henry Oram, James (x) Cornelius, Joseph Coile (Holcomb, p147).

If you see any connection, please contact me on rbccstrr at aol dot co dot uk (no spaces and at = @)

Jesse Cornelius and "unknown" Marsh were married prior to 1806 - date that I believe daughter Lettice was born (or thereabouts).

I have the same data you cited. James' family seems to disappear after the 1860 census. One reason may be that James served with Union as a part of Kennamers Independent Scouts and Guides (not regular army). By the 1870 census some of his children start appearing with other families- ie, daughter Nancy lving with Anderson family, daughter Rhoda and son James lving together, etc So I suspect that James may have left Alabama for more friendly territory - but I have no proof of such. Son Jesse married in 1865 and disappears until the cemetery record in Tishomingo was found.

All of this is supposition on my part - but it is plausible.

Hi,

Your "Food for Thought" sent me back to my Cornelius files.
Unfortunately, I don't think I have anything that will add to what you probably already have.

There are several MARSH females in Blount County, but I can't tie them to a Jesse CORNELIUS. Any idea when they were married?

I have the same 1850 census receord showing the James Cornelius family in Mardhall County, with Jesse age 10.

The 1860 record has the family (spelled CORNEALIS) in Marshall County, but no Jesse...

I have a note referencing that James purchsed 40.15 acres of land in Marshall County, December 1, 1859 - SESW, Section 11, Township 6 South, Range 3 East.

My records indicate that your Jesse's parents were James and Stacy SIMS, but I don't have any confirmation.

I doubt this helps much, but I'll keep looking.

Thanks for your reply. The James I refer to was a son of Jesse Cornelius and unknown Marsh of Blount County. Jesse had two sons and I believe a daughter that lived in Marshall County - Madison Cornelius and James Cornelius and Manila/Matilda Cornelius Williams (wife of Allen Young Williams.)

James appears in the 1850 & 1860 Marshall County census. He had a son named Jesse in the 1850 census age 10- this is not in agreement with the burial records of 1830 - but sometimes these dates are all over the place. I cannot find him after 1850. A marriage date of 1865 would be when he was 25. Food for thought?
Believe you are correct regarding Ellinder/Ellender. I have an Ellinder Cornelius, born Blount County, Alabama about 1840. Parents are John and Mary Elizabeth Blackwood, married Blount County, Alabama 15 June 1839. Ellinder was the first of 9 children born to John and Mary.

John is the son of Aaron Cornelius who married Ellen Fortner. I believe they may have been married in Tennessee.

Aaron is the son of William Cornelius, patriarch of the Cornelius families of Blount County.

Regarding Ellinder's husband, Jesse, I'm afraid I don't have him in my data. Nearly all of my Cornelius people have roots in Blount County, so if this Jesse has his roots in Marshall County, I may not have come across him in my research.

Hope this helps.

I am trying to identify the following persons buried in Joel Cemetery, Dennis, MS: "Jessie Cornelius -
1830 - 23 Dec 1886" and "Ellender Cornelius - 1 May 1841 -
20 June 1909". Indicates they were husband and wife.

Most Cornelius burials in the Joel Cemetery are children of William John Cornelius and his wives Mary Elizabeth Blackwood and Mary "Polly" Stevenson.

I found a marriage record in Marshall Co., AL showing that
Jess Cornelius married Eliner Cornelius 26 August 1865. Knowing that (William) John Cornelius had a daughter named Ellender in the 1850 Blount Co, AL census - age 10, and the 1860 Blount census - age 21, the thought occured to me this Ellender might be his daughter.

The only Jesse born in the time frame of "1830" I can find was a son of James Cornelius of Marshall Co.

Does anyone have a clue as to who this couple was - ie, parents?

Have you looked at the McDonald family of Lancaster Co, SC. near the Kershaw Co line? These McDonalds were neighbors of a Cornelius family on the Cedar, Dry and Rocky Creek area in the Revolutionary era and later. I believe they intermarried, though no proof as yet. What line does your Thomas Cornelius go back to?
Sorry it took so long to respond. I had a death in the family and my research kind of got sidetracked. Ira E. Cornelius, son of Roland, was the brother of Absolom Cornelius. T.J. Cornelius was the son of Absolom. Absolom, Ira E., and T.J. all lived in Madison Co., Alabama prior to moving to Talladega in the mid 1830's. Ira remained in Talladega Co. when Absolom and T.J. left for Texas in 1838.
Thank you for the information you posted. There seems to be alot of information about the Champion Cornelius family in northern Alabama, a seperate family, and almost none for the Roland/Absolom Cornelius family. I am most grateful for any information I may receive.
ORANGEVILLE BANNER FOR THE YEAR 1931,

June 4,
p.3:
William Cornelius -
In the death on Sunday, May 24th,
of William Cornelius, the township of East Garafraxa lost one of its oldest citizens and man who was held in genuine regard by the community in which he had resided for sixty-five years. Although in his 91st year,
Mr. Cornelius had scarcely known what it meant to be ill. Possessed of a sound, health body he had always enjoyed the best of health. a year ago he went about his farm and engaged in his favorite pastime, gardening, much as he had bee accustomed to do for many years. Until early in February last he went to the barn every day and was able to be up and about the house almost to the last.
The late Mr. Cornelius, who was descended from an old English family,
was born at Casa Blanca, Brazil,
on January 24th, 1841.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Cornelius,
who engaged with and English mining company at the time of their marriage and took the long voyage from England to South America as their honeymoon trip.
Seven years later the family returned to England, making the voyage in fourteen weeks in one for the sailing vessels that were in general use prior to the coming of the steamship. When eleven year of age the subject of our sketch came to Canada with his parents,
the family first settling in Hamilton,
later near Cayuga and finally moving to Dungannon in Huron County.
At thirteen young Cornelius made his first venture on his own account, engaging with a farmer near Cayuga for the munificent wage of 75 cents a month and his board and clothing. His employer, by the way , was Mr. Culp, father of Dr. Harry Culp, now living in Toronto.
In 1865, Cornelius drove a yoke of oxen, a cow and a few belongings 100 miles over rude roads from Dungannon to lot 13, con 16, East Garafraxa, where he settled and in time became on of the prosperous farmers of the township. From the first he kept a well=modeled farmstead in view as his goal and the arrangement and attractive appearance of the buildings, garden and other surroundings at the present time shows the good judgment with which h e planned. Shortly after settling in East Garafraxa
he married Miss Hannah Lathwell, of Orangeville,
who predeceased her husband about seven years ago.
He is survived by a family of four sons and four daughters, namely ex-Warden, Jno. a. Cornelius, East Garafraxa, William, on the homestead, Fred, Orangeville, Joseph, East Garafraxa, Mrs. w.A. Dynes, Amaranth, Mrs. Geo. Lightle, Mrs. R.G. Thompson and Mrs. Albert Reid, East Garafraxa. He is also survived by one brother James Cornelius, Lucknow, and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Burns, Holmfield, Man.
The late Mr. Cornelius was a man who accepted the good and ill that comes in life with equanimity and good nature. He was deeply attached to his home and family and took a keen interest in his church and its welfare.
As a neighbor he was held in the highest regard for his honesty, consistency of purpose and readiness to help those about him. Keenly interested in schools and the education of the young, he gave good service as a school trustee. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and was an elder in the Waldemar church for many years. In politics he was a consistent supporter of the conservative party, but tolerant in his attitude toward those who differed from him on question of church or state.

The funeral, which was largely attended, was held from his late residence to Greenwood cemetery on Tuesday afternoon May 26th,. service was held at the house by Rev. W.W. McRae, of Orangeville, assisted by Revs. F.J. Dunlop, Laurel, and Revs. Dinnick and Harris, of Orangeville. The pallbearers were Messrs. Geo. Gamble, W.A. Donaldson, James Hunter, John Burk, Alex. Burk and Arch. McKitrick.
Many beautiful flowers bore mute testimony to the worth of the departed man and the sorrow of friends and neighbors. These included: Gates Ajar, the family; anchor, grandchildren; basket, great grandchildren; wreath, Lathwell nieces; sprays, Mrs. Will Johnston and Mrs. Mauthie, nieces; bouquet of tulips, Mr. F.C. Roffe; spray, Waldemar Presbyterian Church; spray, Laurel United church. The flowerbearers were Arthur Lightle, Edward Lightle, Alvin Cornelius, Harvel Dynes, Willie Reid, Elmer Dynes Myrrl Cornelius and Arthur Cornelius, all grandsons.

Some of the friends present from a distance were: Mr. James Cornelius and Mr. and Mrs. Amos Cornelius, Lucknow; Mr. F.C.
Clara S Cornelius Sharp Nicholas J Cornelius Caroline M nee? Cornelius

I received an incorrect death certificate and would like to get it to the proper family. I've done a bit of research on the family in the hopes that someone would recognize his or her ancester.
Clara S Cornelius (born about 1859 in NY, died Jan 17 1900 in NY, NY) was a black female, born to Nicholas J. and Caroline M. Cornelius. Nicholas (b. about 1836 in MD, parents also born in MD, died poss. Oct 1890) was a basketmaker in 1870. Civil War pension papers index has him serving in K31 USC Inf with an alias of John Johnson. Caroline M was born about 1838 in NY. Her parents were also born in NY. In 1880 she worked as a laundress, Nicholas as a laborer. Clara lived with them and worked as a servant. It appears that Clara married John T. Sharp. He lived at 266 or 267 7th Avenue, where Clara died. He was listed as single. Nicholas and Caroline (and Clara in 1880) lived on Minetta Avenue near 6th Avenue or closeby in 1870 and 1880.
If these people are your relatives, please respond. I will mail you the death certificate.

Re: Cornelius Immigration Patterns

Tillmon was the son of Moses Cornelius and grandson of William Cornelius who died in Blount Co., AL in 1842, but after that, the names are incorrect. William Cornelius, who served in the Rev. War., which is my proven ancestor for SAR, was born sometime between 1750-1760. The birth date of Feb. 15, 1754 belongs to another William Cornelius from Pennsylvania, not the one who died in Blount Co. His wife Lettice's maiden name has never been proven.

The father of William Cornelius, RWS, who died in 1842, was Moses Cornelius of Pittsylvania Co., VA. His mother was Ann(e) Dodson, d/o Fortunatus Dodson and Alice Goad of Richmond County, Virginia. When Moses died sometime between June 25, 1768 and September 1773 in Pittsylvania Co., VA, Ann(e) remarried to George Phillips, hence the "Anne Phillips" found in the old Cornelius Family Bible. The Moses name in this family has been handed down for generations.

It is believed that this Cornelius family may be related to the Rowland/Roland Cornelius family of early Virginia, but documented proof of who the father of Moses Cornelius has not been established, or at least as far as I know.

Hope this helps some.

Ira Ellis Cornelius is my 3rd great grandfather. I've no idea where I found this information but it may help lead you to info that could verify if it is accurate.

Birth: 14 Apr 1786 Spartanburg Cty, SC
Death 26 Mar 1862 NcNairy Cty, TN
Buried: Old McClure Cemetery, 6 mi. NE of Corinth, MS

I cousin that found me via rootsweb many years ago sent me a transcript of Ira's will. If interested I can email it to you. These are a few other notes I have on Ira (my line is through Lorenzo):
11/2002 http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&... Debra O'Neill at pommemom@yahoo.com
He received "land on which he now lives," as a gift from his father.
Perhaps married Dorothy in Illinois, because one of their children was born there.
According to estate records, Dorothy died, but the date and place of death are not known. Ira married wife #2 Nancy in 1817.
1860 Census of Tishomingo Co., MS: Ira E. aged 74, and Nancy ages 69.
The Will of Ira E.
I am looking for information about the parents and siblings on David Cornelius, who resided in the Toms River area of Monmouth County, NJ, and died in 1806, leaving his widow Sarah and three children, all born around 1800: Allen, Rebecca, and Hyram (Hiram).
In 1806, Sarah married Joshua Ferguson (Forgeson?)with whom she had two boys: Joshua Ferguson (Furgison) and
Charles Parker Ferguson.
In the 1820s, apparently after the death of Joshua Ferguson, she traveled with a caravan led by Rev.
I haven't been able to find an Isaac R. Cornelius yet, I did check to see if I could find one listed under Alabama Civil War Soldiers, several were listed but not with the initial "R." I couldn't find one in any of my files either, but then I don't have a middle initial for most of them. I'll keep looking.

Sherry Cornelius

I don't know if the Isaac I have a photo of in his Civil War uniform could be the same as yours or not, I have a feeling he descends from the PA line of Corneliuses, but can't be for certain. Do you have any idea where Isaac R. Cornelius was born, was it in Alabama?

I'll check a couple of my databases to see if I can find anything on an Isaac R. Cornelius, many of those who were in Alabama connect to the Rev War soldier William Cornelius.

Sherry Cornelius

The William Cornelius you referred to was born 15 February 1754 (Source: St. Thomas Parish), he was a son of John Cornelius and Eleanor Little, John and Eleanor married 27 December 1751 in the Episcopal Parish of St. Thomas, Baltimore County, Maryland.

Do you have any idea when your Cornelius family came to Ohio? I'm certain they're not descendants from our line of Corneliuses who were in Muskingum County, but they could be related to the Corneliuses who were in Butler County or one of the other nearby counties.

If you could e-mail me privately at sherry_cornelius@yahoo.com I'll check ad see what I have in my files, although I don't recognize the Leon names or the others.

FYI: http://www.royalblood.co.uk/D439/I439996.html

I don't know how accurate the entire content of this site is. This entry begins with Tillmon, son of Moses, grandson of William. I've found a few glitches in the overall record. The founding ancestor is Rowland, from the Netherlands, it says. Rowland identified himself as a "Dutchman". Of course, this could be similar to the case of the Pennsylvania "Dutch", who were not Dutch but "Deutsch", that is, German.
