Hi Amy, I have lots of information on the Riddle family as well as the Thomas family. Email me at goldenpearlgal@gmail.com and I will send you documents, etc. that I have on both families.
Leathy Corney is buried in the Haneline Cemetery in Piatt County, Illinois. Also buried there is her sister, Mary Ann Riddle Inlow. Both sisters tombstone pictures are also posted on findagrave.com. Three children of Abner Riddle and Sarah Thomas left Ohio to live in Illinois: Jackson Riddle, Lethy Riddle Corney and Mary Ann Riddle Alkire Inlow. Both of these sisters died in 1860; but I have not been able to find out the cause of death. And some of the children of each deceased sister were sent back to Ohio and the census shows them to living with relatives in Madison County, Ohio. I would be interested in the obits you have also on the Corney's. Are you in Ohio? Looking forward to hearing back from you. Ann

I am interested in George Corney who came to New Zealand on the Euphemus in 1857 - for a slightly different reason. He came out on the same ship as some of my family (mis-spelt as Kinyon) and was a contemporary of John and Thomas Kenyon who also came out to New Plymouth from Halifax. I am interested in George Corney because he was a friend of my family and any background of George gives me a clue to the background of my family. I have a bit of information about the Corneys in New Plymouth. Another matter of interest is the Plymouth Company which was set up to send settlers from Plymouth and nearby areas in England - and New Plymouth in New Zealand. There is an unexplained connection between Halifax and the Plymouth Company. Quite a lot of funding and settlers to New Plymouth came from Halifax. Why? What was the connection between Halifax and New Plymouth? Any ideas or wish to communicate plase contact graemekenyon@vodafone.net.nz

Corney & Barrow was founded by Edward Bland Corney who was probably born in Westmoreland, but lived in London. He was joined by his nephew Robert Barrow, and then eventually the company was sold to the Stevens family round about the 1920's.

Sadly, I guess there will be no family discount for the Corney family.

Val Stuart

I am looking for a list of children of Nicholas Corney (Cornery)(b. 1703 d. 1787)- from England - who arrived in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia possibly via Casco Bay, Maine. His wife was Anne.

I suspect that Maritha (Martha) Christina Corney is their daughter, but find no records of her parents. Nicholas and Anne and other Corney children are the only I find listed.

Thanks.

...Matt

Sussex, UK CORNEY + related families

Hello everyone! I am searching for info on the following Sussex families:
Chown, Corney, Butler, Parry - mostly in the Worthing, East Preston,
Steyning area. I am American by birth, though much of my heritage is
English. Several years ago I moved to England (we live in Essex) and
married an Englishman. I have been doing genealogy for a number of years
and now my husband and his family have developed a curiosity for their own
background, and so it begins! Our information is sketchy. Any help or
advise on where to look is very much appreciated. I have some odd notes on
these surnames from BMD online, but don't as yet see how they tie in to our
bunch. I am told the name Chown is Cornish in origin, meaning 'battle
chief' or similar. Here's what I know:
James Chown (d.1946/47) of Worthing married Isobel Annie Corney. She died
age 81 in Feb 1943 when their home at 105 Lyndhurst Rd. was bombed. I got
that by chance from a visit to the Imperial War Museum and looking at the
name Chown under the Civilian War Dead Register. They had a daughter,
Dorothy Adelaide Corney Chown. Likely Corney was one of her given names?
Dorothy had a son, Ronald Wales Chown (b. 7 Feb 1910, Worthing. d. 2001).
No father named on birth certificate. Dorothy subsequently married Ernest
Tapp and they had several sons. Ronald Chown m. Mabel Butler ( 1909-2000)
in East Preston, 1934. I know even less about the Butlers, though the
maiden surname of her mother might have been Parry. A few listings of
Butler in BMD gives location of East Preston, but here again, I don't have
enough info. to connect Mabel to any of them.
I have a new website (see below) with my (mostly) American lines, but have
also included what we have on my husband's. Please check it out. Any help
or suggestions, corrections, etc. very welcome! Thank-you! - Jeanne
jeanne@maineancestry.com
j.martinchown@btinternet.com
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Visit my website www.maineancestry.com

CORNEY FROM GRINDON, NR STOCKTON-ON TEES

Hi all
I'm hoping someone may be able to help with a brick wall
Martha CORNEY was bap. 22/1/1787 at Grindon,nr Stockton-on Tees. She married a Richard PRESTON 20/7/1807 in Durham. Martha's parents were Robert and Mary and that is all I know about them. They had 3 other children apart from Martha, Elizabeth (bap 26/10/1780 ), Mary (bap 16/2/1784 ) and Jane (bap28/3/1790 ) All these were also baptised at Grindon.
I've found 3 possible Robert Corney's in the IGI who might fit the father of Martha. One was bap. in Sunderland 27/12/1761 to Robert and Margaret and the other in Kirkleatham, N.Yorks. 22/9/1758 to Robert. The last was bap. 31/7/1752 in Easington, N.Yorks.
The only Robert Corney I have found on the IGI who married a Mary did so in London in Mar 1775 and it seems a bit unlikely a London couple would move to a small northern hamlet.
Does anyone have any information on this family?
Cheers
Phil
Corney family

Hello, Ive always been interested in the history of my last name as it is an unusual one and have never met another corney in person that is not in my direct family so it would seem it is also quite rare. I have been told that most Corney's are related. I have heard of a few possibilities or origin but can't tell which one is the right one. I am daughter of hillary corney, who was son of Arthur Corney. I do not know of any other corney beyond that point. We live in england. At the moment I belive it came from Ireland from the name O Cearnaigh from the word cearnach which means victorious. Apprantly many moved to north amaerica and australia.

I am currently compiling all the descendants of George's granddaughter Clara Amelia Idalia Corney, known as Ida (her father was Samuel Corney).

I am compiling a One Name Study for the surname CORNEY in New Zealand - so if that's your name or the name of one of your ancestors I want to hear from you. I have an extensive database covering almost all CORNEY's in NZ, past and current.

Most of the kiwi CORNEYs are descendants of George, Joah (Joe) and Jermemiah CORNEY - 3 sons of George CORNEy & Harriet TYAS of Halifax, Yorkshire, England. These 3 brothers all emigrated to NZ in the late 1850's.

Glad to share what info I have with anyone interested
Look forward to hearing from you

Sharyn

I have lots of information on the Riddle family. Lethy Riddle Corney was a sister to my gr gr grandmother, Mariah Riddle Robison. John W. Corney is shown in census as in the household of his first cousin under Henry Bower and wife Leathy Robison Bower of Pleasant Twp, Madison Co., Ohio; he had been sent back to Ohio after the death of his mother, Lethy. I think one of John's brothers was also sent back to Ohio at the same time. I found John Corney living around Marysville, Ohio. I think he married an "Ella". Ann

Hello

There are many Corney's in the IGI from before the 1600s. Some large groups are in Yorkshire, Lancashire, Durham, East Anglia, the West Country, and the South East including London.

They could have come to England from Ireland in pre-medieval times, or later, during the potato famine. They could also have come from France, notably Brittany.

If you have anyone in your family with the name Corney who was alive in 1901, I'd be happy to look them up for you in the censuses and hopefully put you in touch with others researching the Corney family from the same area.

Regards, Val

Sussex Corney family: Beyond Thomas

Hello,

A little while ago, we (Lorna, Chris and myself) discovered some more about Thomas Corney b.1665. This came about after a failed search in the Isle of Wight online records followed by a decision to leave the Corney family history for a year.

So, early this year we pored over the evidence again. To cut a long story short, the IGI still indicated a connection with the Isle of Wight, so we decided to take a punt on the Will of James Corney b.c.1623, who was the founding father of the IOW Corney family.

And, eureka…..

Our Thomas Corney’s Will dated 1728 mentioned his sister Elizabeth, married to William Mears
The IOW James’s Will of 1710 mentioned his daughter Elizabeth, wife of William Meares.

John Corney b.1713, the founder of the English Corney line, was therefore the nephew of Thomas, and brother to the James who married Dinah Bridger. James Corney who married Joan Haine, was another James altogether, and was the son of Thomas Corney. I have set out our findings in an article to be published in the Sussex FHG magazine.

It is ironic that after all our painstaking work, it took a leap of faith to send for James Corney's Will. In hindsight it seems obvious we were related to the Corney's along the coast...

Since early this year, we have been trying to find the origins of James (IOW) but with no success. We are going public anyway with the publication of the article; I am hoping that, with a bit of brainstorming, we might solve this brickwall too. I have a transcription of James's Will, and would be happy to send it as an attachment, my email is vj dot stuart at sky dot com.

Val Stuart
