You start with what you know and go to what you don't know. Start with your birth certificate. You can't prove who your parents are without it. Get your parents' birth certificates, Bible records, obituaries, death certificates, etc. to find out who your grandparents were. Ask elderly family members what they know about your great grandparents. Google your great grand parents with their names in quotation marks, such as "Ulysses Simpson Cornwell" and open the results. Contact others who have information on your line in this way.
Write to me directly at LaCornwell@aol.com and I'll get you started.

Here is my take on these entries from Muhlenberg Co, KY. I believe that all the Cornwells mentioned in the entries are descendents of "Saint" Peter Cornwell who married Sarah Ann Bolling. Peter was born in Prince William Co, VA and ended up in Fauquier Co, VA. I believe that Simon, Jarvis and John Cornwell mentioned in the above entries are all sons of this Peter.

Simon--He is only mentioned here through an assignee. I believe he was still living in Fauquier Co, VA at the time. It appears that in 1805 he moved to Jefferson Co, KY.

John--The last time I found him in Fauquier Co, VA was in 1784. He was in Muhlenburg Co, KY by 1799.

Jarvis--Had moved from Fauquier Co, VA to Spartanburg Co, SC in 1792. He was living in Muhlenburg Co, KY by the 1800 census. He may have moved as early as 1794 when 458 acres of land were sold to Baylis Earle "where Jarvis lives." I believe that the following are children of Jarvis:

Frankey Cornwell who married Samuel Grigsby is listed as a daughter of Jarvis Cornwell when she married in Spartanburg Co, SC in 1786.

Elisha Cornwell--He is listed in Fauquier Co, VA records as early as 1785.

Nancy Cornwell

Willis Cornwell--Speculate he is son of Jarvis based on his pproximity to Elisha Cornwell and Samuel Grigsby.

Dempsey Cornwell--Speculate he is son of Jarvis based on his pproximity to Elisha Cornwell and Samuel Grigsby.

I welcome any thoughts or speculation on any of these individuals.

OK. I think Bathshaba Cornwell is the wife of Elisha Cornwell. Elisha had claimed a right to this same land 22 March 1802. I have his wife down as Phoebe--also called "Shabby." I'll bet Shabby was short for Bathshaba. She married first to John McGuyre (who was deceased by March 1801). He died in Spartanburg Co, SC where Elisha had been living. She was married to Elisha by April 11, 1801 when an entry about the Will of John McGuyre says:

The Executors of John McGuyre met according to appointment & the will of said McGuyre was confirmed. Pheby Mcguyre otherwise Cornwil did not appear & was adjudged to pay all extraordinary costs together with the sheriff's fees.

She didn't appear because she had moved from Spartanburg Co, SC, to Muhlenberg Co, KY!

I would suggest that you check with any genealogy libraries that are in Connecticut to see what resources may be available for the time. You might see if there are personal property tax records. That would be another good source to document where they were living. Best wishes on your search.
In the 1810 census is the family of Elihu Cornwell in Mongomery Co, twp of Mayfield. I am tryng to determine if that is MY Elihu Cornwell who was born in Middletown CT. does anyone know of any other records that I might check for that time to see if they lived there or were just passing thru. I have been trying to find a marriage record for them for years. and wonder if they married there. he married Phebe Dowd daughter of Richard Dowd and Rebecca Savage.. One child Chauncey Connecticutt was born in Erie Co NY perlater census records. He was born in 1812. This suggests (if this is the correct family) that they were moving thru. The family moved back to Middletown by 1820. any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I have always wondered about this Cornwell family in Frederick County, VA. I know some of them went on to Barbour county, WV. I have this William as the father of John Cornwell who married Frances Cline. Is this correct?

I would love to find descendants of this William and the William Cornwell whose sons, John and James, married Shacklefords, who would be willing to participate in the Cornwell DNA Study.

Thanks for posting the information.

Take care
Scott

I have a John Cornwell m. Fanny Kline September 4, 1824, Minister John Allemong. Source: Marriage Register No. 1 Frederick County, VA.

I do not know if this John Cornwell is the son of William Cornwell. I would note, however, that the date of John's marriage fits nicely with being William's son (William married in 1804.)

I am very interested in Frederick County Cornwells because Peter Wolfe married Anne Cornwell in Frederick County July 28, 1777, Bond Jeremiah Garner. Peter Wolfe is the ancestor of many of Orange County Indiana Wolfes who married Cornwells closely related to my Cornwells.

Frederick County is also interesting to me because the county courthouse in Winchester is about 13 miles from the home of Revolutionary War Parson Charles Mynn Thruston, who I believe may have been related to my Elizabeth Thornton who married Charles Cornwell.

I drove to the Frederick County Courthouse yesterday (that is where I found William's will) and plan to return next week since I did not have enough time to look at everything related to my search. So, hopefully, I will have more to post in the future.

Are you any relation to a Bertha Crockett who lived in Orange County Indiana? I believe she was in a nursing home in Paoli if I remember correctly. When we visited her several years ago she was 102 years old and she remembered David Burtt, son of Rachel and Asa Burtt. Also, will look up info on the Burtts. Asa and Amassa were not twins. They were from Caroline County Maryland and also lived in Queen Anne county. They lived on the Choptank river. (Our Andrew Hynes, father of Rachel Hynes Burtt, was from Fredrick County Maryland.) Asa was born October 22, 1772 and died September 9, 1828. Amassa was a twin but his twin was Maacah who died September 17, 1833. Amassa was born January 17, 1775 and died December 19, 1853. Don't know if Maacah was a boy or a girl. Another set of twins were Rachel and John Burtt born August 5, 1777. Parents of Asa and Amassa and the rest were William Burtt and Elizabeth Swift. Other names were Swift, Countiss, Liter (Lighter).

It is important to correct potentially misleading information and I thank you for your reply!

I have been very curious about the Burtts and their connection with the Cornwells, especially since both families can be found in the same location, first in Kentucky, then in Indiana.

I believe the Burtts were from Frederick County, Va - Is that correct? I have been driving to Frederick County Va (I live in Washington DC) for the past few weeks to find information about the Wolfes and Cornwells. I could look for information for you, also, if you would like.

What other surnames were the Burrts associated with? Were these two men twins? Is that why their names were spelled so similarly? Do you have any other information about them or interesting facts you would be willing to share?

Thank you!

I also wanted to ask you about the spelling of the name Hynes. Old documents are notorious for incorrect/phonetic spellings. Do you know whether Hynes was also spelled in other ways, such as Hanes, Haynes, Haines, Hines, etc.? I assume the pronunciation of Hynes is "Hines." Is that correct?

Thanks.

Hi, Thank you for the information. My husband is the Crockett and his ancestors started out in Kittery Maine in 1640 but none of them ever migrated to Indiana. I am the daughter of Rullus Williams and Ruby Nicholson, and the granddaughter of Alice Cornwell, Albert Williams, Benjamin Nicholson and Telulah Simpson. If you live in the Orange County/Washington County area, you may know one of these families as they lived just north of Campbellsburg and like your family, their ancestors settled there in the early 1800s.

I believe there is quite a bit of information in Frederick County, Virginia about the Countiss family, who you also mentioned. Next time I drive out there, I will keep your family names in mind and hopefully, come up with something for you. Thanks again!
Comment About John Wolfe/Charles Mynn Thruston Conveyance

Contrast the Redman/Thruston conveyance to the John and Elizabeth Wolfe deed to Charles Mynn Thruston. The Wolfe conveyance was for a fee simple, an absolute transfer of property. This means that John Wolfe (grand-son of Peter Wolfe) received this property from Peter Wolfe as a gift sometime before Peter Wolfe died.

We know that John Wolfe did not inherit this land from one of Peter's legatees under the will because the deed says that the land conveyed does not include the estates and inheritances of Sarah Redman, Henry and Ann Hampton, John and Rebecca Nichols, and Elizabeth Cornwell, all of whom are clearly still alive.

And since the deed specifically states that the land is part of the original Peter Wolfe 1734 land grant, a gift is the only way that John Wolfe could have possession of this land (absent an unlikely inheritance from his deceased father). No, I think that the totality of the picture indicates that Peter gave John this land when John's father died to make sure that John had resources that a father might have been able to provide.

Comment About Peter Wolfe's Will and Redman's Deed to Charles Mynn Thruston

What is interesting about the Peter Wolfe will is that he left a life estate to his daughter Sarah Redman for her natural life and only her natural life. This meant that at the death of Sarah, the property went to John Wolfe, Peter’s grandson, even if Henry was still living, because under the terms of the will, John Wolfe held the remainder of the life estate. On the other hand, Peter Wolfe left a life estate to his other two daughters for the duration of their lives and also their husbands’ lives.

Any legatee holding a life estate can convey only that which they actually own. So the deed from Henry and Sarah Redman to Charles Mynn Thruston was for a life estate only and that life estate ceased at the death of Sarah Redman. Further, the Redman/Thruston deed conveyed the life estate - subject to the yearly rent of ten shillings currency payable to the use of Betsey Cornwell during her minority. This meant that Charles Mynn Thruston was responsible for providing ten shillings annually to Betsey Cornwell until she came of age (or until Sarah Redman died, whichever came first).

I do not know how many life estates were the subject of purchase in Virginia. However, I would think that buying a life estate in Colonial Virginia was a rather risky proposition, especially since women had an astonishingly high mortality rate and when Sarah died, Charles Mynn Thruston would no longer have any benefit of the property. Even if Sarah died within a few days (or hours) of Thruston’s purchase, all of Thruston’s investment would have been lost, John Wolfe would have assumed ownership of the property, and Charles Mynn Thruston would have had no legal recourse in the matter.

This makes me wonder if perhaps the totality of the Redman/Thruston deed portrays a rather closer relationship between the Thrustons, Wolfes, and Cornwells than previously thought. I think this is especially interesting for those of us in the Charles Cornwell/Elizabeth Thornton search. Any thoughts?
