Re: CORP FAMILY

Hello. I am new to this board. I descend from the Chief Ance (Anse)/Ambrose Corp line.

There are hand written letters from David Corp located in the Burton Memorial Collection of the Detroit Public Library located on Woodward Avenue in Detroit, Michigan, USA. When I went and read them I had to make an appointment. Quite easy and I'm glad I did.

CORP
This interesting surname is of Old French origin, introduced into England after the Conquest of 1066. The derivation is from the Old French "corp" (Old Norse "korpr"), raven, and would have been given as a nickname to someone with black shiny hair. This is an example of that sizeable group of early European surnames that were gradually created from the habitual use of nicknames. The nicknames were given in the first instance with reference to a variety of characteristics, such as physical attributes or peculiarities, mental and moral characteristics, including supposed resemblance to an animal's or bird's appearance or disposition, or to habits of dress and occupation. The surname was first recorded in the latter half of the 12th Century (see below) and can also be found as Corp; William le Corp is noted in the Cartulary of Oseney Abbey, Oxfordshire (1231). Recordings of the surname from London Church Registers include; the christening of Henry, son of Henry and Elizabeth Corpe, on January 20th 1647 at St. Dunstan's, Stepney; and the marriage of Thomas Corpe and Susan Holland on September 28th 1648 at the same place. The Coat of Arms most associated with the family is a silver shield with three stumps of trees couped and eradicated green, the Crest being a yew tree proper. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Walter le Corp, which was dated 1177, in the "Pipe Rolls of Yorkshire", during the reign of King Henry 11, known as "The Builder of Churches", 1154 - 1189. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Read more: http://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Corp#ixzz11OmXaeol

Daniel W. Corp and Patience Berdina Underwood were my great
great grandparents. Patience Berdina is the daughter of
Melissa Boone. She was a distant relative of Squire Boone
(Daniel Boone's father). Daniel and Patience had my great
grandfather (Henry Stewart Corp). Henry had 6 sons, 2 by
Emma Cloud and 4 by Margaret Pence. My grandfather was
Lloyd Lee Corp (m: Emma). My father was Wilber Lee Corp.
My name is Lee Ann (Corp)Nelson. I live in Tacoma, WA.
I have information on the Corp/Corpe family that dates back
to the 1500's. Daniel's father was Caleb Corp. If you would like more information look up the Corp/Schibig/Nelson
family tree on Ancestry.com. Thanks!!!

My theory is that Robert's wife Ann (Nee North)died in 1855 and he remarried a Charlotte Wason in 1859 and that Charlotte brought 2 children into the marriage called George Christopher Wason (born ca1857) and Eliza Ann Wason (born ca1858) . These children assumed the surname Corp after Charlotte's marriage. There were 5 more children born to Robert and Charlotte and Robert was 80 when the last was born.
Charlotte was considerably younger than Robert. Any comments appreciated.

Alex Wood
alexwood625@btinternet.com

Hi there Neil,

I'm very sorry i have not managed to get back to you sooner, unfortunately farming does not leave you much time for any thing else! I would be very grateful if you may still be able to offer any assistance in the Corp/Corpe family tree. As far as i can work out My grandfather-Warfield Thomas G Corpes' father is (George William Corpe). The story within the family has him as being kicked out when very young! We have no personal information past this apart from his father was called Sam. We think we have found the missing link with a Samuel Warfield Corpe as being his father. In the records there is indication of a William/George corpe as being his son, so we have asssumed this link especially with Warfield being his middle name and my grandfathers first name. This tree line then follows back to a Robert Corp born in 1970 England.

I hope all the above makes some sence? Robert Corpe is as far as we can go. Our line from Robert is through his son William Corpe born 1801, then his son Frederick Corpe born 1823 Somerset and his son which is our Samuel born 1856 somerset. All of these Corp's seem to be around the Glastonbury/ west pennard and Baltonsborough area. My grandfather farmed at Baltonsborough and my father at Barton St David before we moved to Chilthorne Domer, where we farm now....so i can only assume we must have a connection somewhere a long the line!

Well that's all i know, it would be good to catch up if it's an option but otherwise any information would be very much appeciated,

Many Thanks

Jon.

Hi Neal,

Have only just come across your post. My Name is Jonathan Corpe and we have just started to try and chase our family back. We always had a dead end with my farthers grand farther Samuel Warfield Corp as we had no link from him. After the last week we have linked ourselves back to Robert Corp B:1760. It seems all our relitves come from the West Pennard area with my grand parents living Baltonsborough.

I see you mentioned in a post that your relatives come from the same area, do you tie into Robert Corp 1760? You also say you live near West Pennard, we are also not far...just near Yeovil.

Would be grateful for any information you have

Many Thanks

Jon.

Hello. Came across your 2008 posting. My grandfather George Corp ran away from Shepton Mallet in Somerset to London probably around 1880 or so. I know he was 11 yrs old at the time. He died in the late 1950's just before his 90th birthday. His parents were George and Fanny Corp I believe. His son Frank was my father. My family emigrated to the US in 1962. There is also a Corp connection to Stoke Fleming in southern England. There is a small ancient church there with a tomb in the floor of John Corp and his granddaughter Eleanore (dated 1354). From what I've been able to discover, the Corp family owned quite a bit of land around the Devon area and in the 1400's sold some to the City of Dartmouth. There are a few Corp artifacts in the Dartmouth Museum.
