JAMES CORSON, BORN 1861 SCOTLAND, LIVED IN MONTANA

I am trying to trace James Corson, who was my great-grandfather's brother. He emigrated from Scotland to the United States in the 1880s along with several of his siblings, most of whom settled in Wyoming.

I know that James settled in Montana from an article about John Corson, which mentions his brother "Jim of Montana", and in John's obituary it again mentions brother "James of Bridger, Montana". James is also mentioned as still surviving in another's obituary in 1949, but has passed on in yet another in 1956.

There is a James Corson who died in Billings, Yellowstone, Montana in 1950. He was married to Emma Cameron, and they had children, Agnes, Vera, Charles, William & Robert.

I would love to be able to confirm one way or the other whether or not this is my James Corson, and would be very grateful for any help!

After my uncle, Raymond Naylor, died in the 1st World War, the US Government sent my grandparents a large certificate with the date of death, a thank you for service that kind of thing. This Certificate has been in a frame for years, and after taking the frame apart there was another document underneath from the Warren Company (Bucks Co) with the name of Oscar Corson (a member in good standing). The Warren Company dealt with the "recovery of stolen horses and Property and the detection of thieves".

Thought I post this in case it was the same Oscar Corson. My father was born in 1906, so it was about that same time.

Ray Naylor

As found in the Felcone catalog (I have no interest). I do not know if I can post the link here, but searching Felcone will do the trick.

1820 SLAVE MANUMISSION
35. (SUSSEX COUNTY--SLAVERY). Courson, Isaac V. Document signed, 9 May 1820, manumitting his slave Michael. One page, folio. Light fold marks, else fine. $750
". . . I Isaac V. Courson of the township of Hardwick in the County of Sussex . . . hereby do manumit and set free my Negro man named Michael aged twenty four years . . . who is sound in mind, and bodily capacity to the best of my knowledge. . . ." Witnessed by Job S. Halsted. Slave manumissions are usually found in poor condition as the former slave normally carried the document with him to prove that he was a free man. This one is in lovely condition.

According to VirtualWall.org, Terry Charles Corson was born in Skowhegan, Maine, on 14 Oct 1947: http://www.virtualwall.org/dc/CorsonTC01a.htm

Thus, he most likely descends from the Corson family called "Division I" by the Corson/Colson Family History Association (CCFHA).

More information about this family division can be found on the CCFHA website: http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ccfha/div1.htm

Can you email me?

My family tree is "Foster" and the Hannah you mentioned married Benjamin Foster in 1895 after the death of her first husband Oscar Corson.
Re: CORSON FAMILY FROM KIRKCUDBRIGHT, SCOTLAND

Hi,

The information I have is that William Corson and Agnes McVane married on 11/06/1852 in Balmaghie - I got this detail from the Mormon IGI Family Search website, but have not been able to find any records to confirm this, so I'd be interested to know if you have anything.

My William's parents were not John Corson and Janet Donaldson. For a while, I was convinced that they were, as the date and place of birth matched later Census records for William and his family. However, when I discovered that some of William and Agnes' children settled in Rawlins, Wyoming, USA, I sent a letter to the Rawlins Newspaper which was published and which put me in touch with several descendents. From them, I discovered that William Corson sailed to the USA with his youngest daughter, Agnes Penelope, on the SS Numidian in 1903, and he died in Rawlins, Wyoming in 1911 - I have copies of his obituataries from local newspaper of the time.

So therefore, the William Corson who married Agnes McVane could not have died in Scotland in 1856, as did William Corson born 1833 to John Corson and Janet Donaldson. I have details of his death record from Scotlands People website, which clearly states that William Corson, Farm Servant, Bachelor, died 25/12/1856, and his parents were John Corson and Janet Corson, maiden surname Donaldson.

So my search for my William's parents continues.

My William and Agnes McVane had 10 children:
Jane (born 1852, who possibly emigrated to Australia)
Peter (born c1854, who went to USA)
William (born 1857, moved to England and is my great-grandfather)
Grace (born 1859, married Adam Robertson, and moved to USA - I am in touch with her descendans)
James (born c1861, also to USA)
Andrew (born 1864, also to USA)
John (born 1867, also to USA - am in touch with his descendants, also)
David (born 1869, also to USA)
Agnes (born 1873, known by her middle name Penelope, also to USA)
Robert (born and sadly died 1875)

Nearly all the information I have has been obtained from Scotlands People, which is an excellent website, although as it is pay-as-you-go, it can become expensive (but worth every penny!)

My full tree is on Genes Reunited. My line of descent is William Corson junior (born 1857, died 1932) married Elizabeth Ritchie. They had four children, the youngest was Agnes Grace. Agnes married James Reid Anderson, and their eldest son was my father, John McVane Anderson. (I may have already told you this, not sure - should have printed out details of this thread!)

Hope that all makes sense, and I'd be grateful of any information regarding the marriage of William and Agnes McVane. My email address is jan.saunders1@virgin.net, which may be easier than continuing on this thread?

Thanks for your help,

Cheers, Jan.

Hi, THX for your reply.

My immediate family is from close to the town of Dumfries but in my research i got back to late 1200's from pretty much south of Edinburgh centering on the whole of the Dumfriesshire region.

As well i have about 9 Corson family charts worldwide, 3 or 4 in Scotland at this point.

Regarding your reply my research does shows that John and Janet's son william did marry Agnes McVane But they had a son William who may have not married, he was born in 1857.

As well Johns brother James had a son, william who did not marry, he was born in 1862...Can you remember where you got your info regarding the above?

ALSO Do you have dates for "William and Agnes + daughter Jane" as i have a willam and Agnes but their line is incomplete , Only 3 children currently.

Hi JCorsonNZ - thanks for your help, unfortunately the William Corson born to John Corson and Janet Donaldson is not my William - I discovered that one a while ago, and thought it was the right one, but then found that John Corson and Janet Donaldson's William Corson died a bachelor aged 21 in 1856 - I was really disappointed when I discovered that! I'm also still trying to find out anything I can about William and Agnes' daughter, Jane, who apparently emigrated to Australia! Where do your Corson ancestors comes from? Cheers, Jan.

Hello Jan,
I am happy to discover that the Wyoming Corsons belonged to one of the Scottish Corson families. Have you read about them in Orville Corson's 1939 book, _Three Hundred Years with the Corson Families in America_? If not, I can send you the information.

The Corson/Colson Family History Association (CCFHA) is working on a book about all known Corson / Courson / Coursen (and other variant surname) families in the world, which will serve as an update to Orville Corson's book. To date, we don't have much information about Scottish Corson immigrants to the US. Would you be willing to share your information about William Corson, Jr., and his siblings and descendants for inclusion in the publication?

Sincerely,
Michael Corson
misccorson@yahoo.com

Hi, I am trying to find out more information about William Corson, born c1827-1833 in Parton, Kirkcudbright, Scotland.
He married Agnes McVane in c1852 in Balmaghie, Kirkcudbright, and had at least several children, one of whom, William, who was my 2xgreat-grandfather. Several other children (inc. John, Andrew, David, Peter and Agnes) emigrated to the Wyoming area of the USA, another daughter, Mary, possible emigrated to Australia. William himself went to the USA after Agnes died in 1903, and stayed there until his own death in 1911. Any information regarding William's parents would be brilliant? I have lots of information regarding William junior and his brothers and sisters if anyone has them in their family tree. Cheers, Jan.

Interesting that you are from PA. I was born in Pittsburgh.
No, the only other engraved stone is Sadie Leavitt. It is a very old typical New England type cemetery, with 15 - 20 unmarked stones. The unusual feature is to find such 'modern' engraved stones there. As you probably know, many graves in colonial times were marked with simple flat stones placed vertically at the head of graves. We have researched the deeds to the land back to the 1880's and found no clues as to the connection to the Corson or Leavitt families.

My father was the son of Clyde Coarson. The info you have sounds very familiar. Everyone from this generation is deceased. I am interested in the ancestry. Any info you have would be appreciated. Thank you
Trudy Coarson Huseman
Dixon, Il.
