Is anybody working on this line? I am really interested in the lineage of Florence R. Fry. She was the daughter to Rome Joyce Fry and Amelia Walthart Fry. I am especially interested in the Walthart line which connects to my family in the Grant Co.,WI area.
In the Cortelyou Genealogy book by John Van Zandt Cortleyou it states that Florence is the daughter to an "Amitia".
I believe this is supposed to be Amelia.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Please feel free to email me directly.
Melissa
melissachiatt@yahoo.com

I've been told that in the Cortelyou Genealogy book that "Jane Head Crowley" is mentioned on page 197 & 277. My Great Great-Grandmother was named Jane Head Crowley married to John William Stanley, both of New York. She was the youngest of four children. Their daugher Annie Maria Stanley married James Reynolds Pigman.

If anyone has the names of their parents, date of birth, death, marriage, children's names, where they were born, etc. And a brief explaination how Jane is connected to the Cortelyou's would greatly apprechiated.

Hope this helps.

Ellen

Re: Dwight T. Cortelyou and Florence R. Fry Wisconsin

Florence Fry Cortleyou was my great grandmother. She died in 1898, in Reedsburg WI, aged 28 from TB (consumption). (I am looking for her burial place, I found a lot of Fry's in Grant Co. cemetary, but not her). My grandmother, Edna Mae Cortleyou was only 1 yrs. when her mother died. So there aren't a lot of family stories about her. I do however, have a couple of letters her boyfriend wrote to her, before she married Dwight. Anyway...Florence had a sister, Minnie A. who was born in 1875, and two brothers - Burton born in 1877 and Lewis born in 1879 (all dates are +/- a year). All I know about Amelia (yes, I agree, Amitia is a mis-spelling of Amelia)is that her mother was born in New York, and her father (Mr. Walthart) was born in Switzerland.
That's all I know, hope it helped a bit. I have a great photo of Florence, with her three children, dated 1887. If you know anymore about the Fry's, I would appreciate any info also.
Cheers!
Cindy
Carter,

I guess that would make your father Timothy Ward Cortelyou, born at Vincennes, Ind., on Dec. 27, 1932! And his brothers were Stephen and Michael along with their sister, Sallie Susanne. Is this correct? I put the name as William Ward as that is how it appears in the "book".

Carter,

It is nice to meet a distant cousin! As for Bibles, they are the best source for our ancestor's names. However, going by my own experience, family members change their names at will! This can be very confusing to say the least. The sources referred to in "the book" say that John Van Zandt Cortelyou used information from correspondance and interviews gathered back in 1934. I assume this to mean that he had written letters from either your grandfather of grandmother. It also states that your grandfather was in business with your great grandfather in Oblong, manufacturing and distributing advertising novelties (1940).

Sometimes families don't keep up with each other. This is probably what happened with Harriet Eliza Cortelyou. Her father was William Cortelyou, the grandfather of William Ward. That would make her your great great aunt. I think this is correct!

Please keep in touch and correct me if I am wrong. She, Harriet, died the year your father was born. Any family disputes in yur family? I know that there were in mine! Every now and then that is! I come through the Cropsey's and Barkeloo's that married into the Cortelyou family!

Ellen

Cortelyou/Dorsett

Cristy, I have the following:

Martha Cortelyou (Cornelius, Cornelis, Pieter, Jaques)was born near new Dorp, Staten Island, Aug. 15, 1757; bap. at New Dorp, Oct. 19, 1757; died July 21, 1825; married May 7, 1784 to John Dorsett, who died March 7, 1832, aged 80 years, 1 month,27 days.

This John Dorsett was a son of John Dorset, b.09/29/1708; died 09/29/1765, and Cathrine Hoff, daughter of William Hoff, of Middletown, Manmouth County, NJ. The John Dorset (one "t") last mentioned was son of Joseph Dorset, b.04/21/1681; d.10/12/1741, and Elizabeth Poling, b. 10/25/1679; d.1759. Joseph Dorset was son of James Dorset, first settler of the name, who came from Bermuda to NJ, where he was granted land in 1677. The origin of James Dorset is otherwise unknown. He died prior to 1721. (Genealogy of Dorset(t) Family of Monmouth Co., NJ, in Hist. Gen. Miscellany, Stillwell, vol. III.

Martha Cortelyou Dorsett, "married," took her first communion at New Dorp, May 18, 1788. John and Martha Dorsett appear as sponsors at the bapt. of a number of Martha's nephews and nieces during the period around 1790-1800. John and Martha are buried at New Dorp, where their graves are marked in the cemetery which surrounds the Moravian Church.

Their children are:
1.Catherine, b and bap. 04/10/1785; d.July 28, 1866; m.July 16, 1808, David Prall(spelled Prall, Proll,Prawl Praul).

2.Cornelius Cortelyou, b. 7/28/1787, bap. 8/19/1987.

3.Sarah, b.8/26/1790; bap. 8/29/1790; d. 4/8/1871; m. 3/26/1815, Nathaniel Martin.

4.John, b.9/23/1793; bap. 10/13/1793; m. 10/29/1823 Ellen Conover Cropsey.

5.Peter, b. 8/27/1798; bap. 9/16/1798; m.Eliza Lewis.

6.Ellen (or Eleanor) Maria, b. 7/13/1801; bap. 7/19/1801 as Eleanor Mary; d. 10/27/1882; m. 10/14/1835, Abraham Van Pelt, son of David and Ann Van Pelt.
Cortelyou, Oblong, IL

My father is the first-born son of Ward William and Edith Nelle Morris Cortelyou, of Oblong, Illinois. In a brief phone conversation, he did not recognize the name of Harriet Elize Cortelyou Fisher. Her death pre-dates his birth only by a few years and Oblong was and still is a very small town. This is quite interesting.

Ellen,

You are correct in identifying my father, uncles and aunt. Steven was deceased in 1987 in (Waterloo?) Iowa while living in Bloomington, IL and is buried in the cemetery of a Roman Catholic parish in Oblong.

I too thought my grandfather's name was William Ward, but my notes from the family bible indicate Ward William, and are in the hand of my grandmother, Edith Nelle Morris.

I am very curious about Harriet Elize Cortelyou Fisher. Is it possible that she comes from a separate branch of the family and never realized she had kinsfolk living in the same small town? My grandfather's "Cortelyou Machine Shop" was a fairly substantial concern, particularly involved in the oil drilling business of the area.

Carter

Received this info regarding Harriet Eliza Cortelyou Fisher:

Harriet Eliza was Joseph Fisher's second wife when she married him on May 1, 1904 and they had no children. I believe that he had a son by his first marriage named Oren and there may have been other children. Oren lived in Oblong, was a bachelor and was quite short. Maybe even less than 5 ft. in height.

The irony of this reference to Joseph Fisher's son Oren is that the Cortelyous of Oblong are tall people. The shortest of my father's generation was 6' 3" or thereabouts.

Replying to George Myers re: George B.Cortelyou. Let me first say that I am working from incomplete notes, as my files are in storage. The link in question is with George B. Cortelyou's mother, Rose Seery, who had a sister Ellen Seery. Ellen Seery was married to Peter A. Myers of New York and they were the parents of Joseph Myers, the grandfather of the George Myers who posted this message. George is my second cousin once removed. I have much I can share on this family, and shall retrieve my files from storage in few days.

Re: Cortelyou of Staten Island

I'm not sure if any of this will help you, but here's some information related to the Cortelyou family...

I'm a Van Pelt...the Van Pelt, Cortelyou, and Prall families seem to be connected by Staten Island geography and several intermarriages. Here's a marriage that I know something about...

Sarah Lawrence (1754-1829), married Peter Van Pelt (1749-1791) on June 19, 1771.
After Peter Van Pelt died, Sarah Lawrence married Peter Cortelyou (?-1820).

Sarah Lawrence's son, Richard Lawrence Van Pelt, married Elizabeth Daniels. After Richard's death, she married David Prall. David Prall might have had a father and a brother named Peter Prall. David Prall had a son named Peter Prall that married Betsey Butler (a daughter or niece of James Butler?).

Peter Van Pelt's sister, Barbara Van Pelt (1748-1847) married John Mersereau. They had three children (David, Israel P., and Peter). John Mersereau remarried the daughter of Abraham Prall, Mary Prall.

My cousin forwarded me some information on the Nyssen/Denise line so I was trying to find out more on the wives' families. I have another Polhamus (Elizabeth, the second wife of Denyse)I do not have a birth/death date for her and it looks like they did not have children. So, my lines have married into each other a few times, it looks like. Please E-Mail me at jerisetzer@hotmail.com if you would like more info!
Trying to get info on a Joseph Cortelyou, born in Brooklyn in the late 1800's... lived for many years in our Victorian house in Haworth, NJ (Bergen County). Appparently he built a "Cortelyou car" in Brooklyn at the turn of the century (according to the Cortelyou history book)...has anybody ever heard anything about this car? Thanks, Beth P.

Stereo Pair Photograph

There is also a stereo pair photograph of George B. Cortelyou available from the National Archives. I've recently admonished them for having a picture of stock yards instead of the Lions in deep snow 1948 of the NY Public Library as there NAIL Nat. Archives Information Locator needs a little work. I am currently investigating the Moore-Jackson Cemetery in Woodside Queens, NY. The lot was found to be a cemetery by WPA workers and the broken stones restood, not necessarily in the right locations. Some other pieces have been found buried underground, standind apparently where they where broken off. The Queens Historical Association now owns the lot and would like to restore it as a park, it is currently a pretty garden maintained by local a local resident. Mr. George B. Cortelyou was an expert in shorthand and taught for awhile in NYC and he would be interested in this work. They're trying to geyt Queens native Donald Trump to donate to help the three remaining out of 27 or 28 family cemeteries in left in Queens, though some may me under parking lots.

Thank you very much. I am still not sure if indirectly through marriage there is another connection. I have looked all over the Net at George B. Cortelyou and have no idea how this family legend started so I'll have to wait for other information. My father George was the youngest of eleven his mother Margaret (nee Gregory) and his father Joseph related a story of being somehow related to the school teacher later COnED CEO George B. Cortelyou. Recent researchers are appalled that no one has read his letters as additional insight into the Spanish American War, they are there on record for someone to research, after all he was once Charman of the Republican Party! Unfortunately, history has hidden him having the tragic responsibility of telling Pres. McKinley's wife the news of the attempt on his life in Buffalo, NY a place I once lived and studied.
Please, if you can tell me who my relations are, I think there is a Peter Myers in there, and I'm pretty convinced now that most Myers come from England as some credit card companies have insisted when propositioning me for my business. Please tell me who you are if you would I would like to know another Myers, not Meyers, without having to move to Ohio where the most of us or them live. Thank you.

George B. Cortelyou, "US cabinet minister and public utility director" held many posts from secretary to Grover Cleveland and William McKinley to three cabinet posts with Teddy Roosevelt, including 44th Secretary of the Treasury. He had a summer house in Huntington, NY where I believe he passed away in 1940 and is buried there. I would like additional geneological information if any one knows. According to my family, he was married to a relation of mine Rose or Rosalie Myers from Brooklyn, where his family was also. Due to the politcs of two party system and the turmoil of the times, the family never spoke. Thank you in advance.
