My ex-husbands grandmother was Eugene Cortez married name Gene Abaya, her sister was Catalina Cortez and had a brother named Manuel Cortez from Miami,Gila,Arizona. Her father's name was Pete Cortez. Gene and her sister pasted away here in Fresno, CA. I'm not sure you are from the same family. She had mentioned that her mother pasted away when she was very small and went to the mission alot when she was growing up. You reach me at hillefresno@aol.com.

Cortez, Francis "Tony"

I CORTEZ-Francis "Tony" Cortez, Monrovia resident and former long time Azusa resident, passed away on June 20, 2006 at the age of 81. Tony served in the US Navy during WWII (1941-1946) and was a member of the famed Navy Green Dragons. He was a loving, giving, hard working father who will be dearly missed. Preceded in death by daughters, Barbara and Linda and his brother, Charles, he is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, Cecelia; sons, Francis A. Jr., Kelly, Ephren and Robert Cortez; daughters, Shirley Corrales, Jeanette Sheets, and Francie Cortez; brothers, John and Richard Cortez; sisters, Rita Moulton and Betty Rodriguez; 13 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren as well as Foxy. A visitation will be Thursday, June 29th, from 6pm to 9pm with a memorial service at 7:00pm both at White's Funeral Home. The Funeral Liturgy (Mass) will be at 10:00am Friday, June 30th, at Immaculate Conception Church, 740 S. Shamrock, Monrovia. The Rite o f Committal will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Covina. White's Funeral Home, Azusa (626-334-2921) assisting the family.

Antonio "Tony" Cortez, 78, of Othello, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at the SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation Center in Moses Lake with his children at his side.

Tony was born on Nov. 15, 1929, in La Grulla, Texas, to Pedro and Corina (Garcia) Cortez. He married his childhood sweetheart Julia Ybarra in La Grulla on June 23, 1946. The family settled in Othello in 1962 where he went to work as a fertilizer applicator truck driver for PJ Taggares. When Wilbur Ellis purchased the fertilizer operation Tony stayed on with them. He retired once when he was 65 but they called him back and he stayed until 2002.

Tony's passion was his family. He loved the weekend Barbecues, family gatherings of any type, Ranchero music, and especially dancing, sometimes traveling to Sunnyside on a Saturday to go dancing with Julia. He enjoyed traveling with Julia, summer trips to Texas to see their family and the trips to Hawaii. In later years Tony's passion was caring for Julia.

He will be remembered as an honest, loving and giving man. His vegetable garden often fed the neighbors and friends who stopped by to visit. In fact no guest of his house went unfed or left without something for the trip home. Even when he was in the hospital Tony instructed his daughter Velma to put together five fruit baskets for specific people, one in particular, for a man he had never met, but who had trimmed Tony's apple tree when he was unable to do so. Tony made friends easily and was well respected by those who new him. He was "the best."

Tony was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Julia, a son Rosendo, his great-grandson Michael DeLeon Jr., a sister and four brothers.

He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law Efrain (Blanca) Cortez of Mission, Texas, and Leo (Dalia) Cortez of Moses Lake, his daughters and sons-in-law Alicia Enriquez of Hermiston, Ore., Emma (Johnny) Dick of Pasco, Nellie Cortez of Kennewick, Marie Esmeralda (Sheldon) Hitchcock of Moses Lake and Velma (Joe) McKerlie of Othello, three brothers, Hernan of Sunnyside, Ponciano of La Grulla, Texas, and Olegario of Pine Bluff, Ar., 24 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.

A time for final visitation has been set aside at Stevens Funeral Chapel in Othello, on Wednesday, Jan. 16, beginning at 3 p.m. and continuing until 7:30 p.m., with the rosary being prayed at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Jan. 17, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Othello, with burial to follow at Bess Hampton Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to thank the staff at Kadlac Medical Center of Richland and SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation Center of Moses Lake for their tender loving care of their father.

Cortez Solorio family.... I have family in all the places you mentioned and a priest ancestor. You can contact me at 616 531 3475.. My Uncle Louis Sanchez is still alive he is 95. He counded Mission VIejo and EL Toro California.. We have 500 family members living in that area. I have probably met only a few members from your the Solorio side of the family. My family also lived in Alice, Texas, where I was born in 1946. Back then my parents owned a store on the corner of Johnson and Escobar and moved to Corpus Christi, Texas. Most of the family remains there, but others moved to Arizona, Utah and Nevada. The names you mentioned are not familiar in our family. It's possible that we could be related some way or another, since I don't think Cortez was that big in Alice, Texas.

He was originally from Purepero, Michoacan in Mexico and left when my father was 3 years old. He was aproximately 38. I found them in the 1930 census for el paso Texas. Were they much older at the time when she was adopted? Vincente was born abt. 1874. let me know if this is them and i will send the rest of the info to you

I know of Pedro(pete)& Trinidad.But their last name was Calzada of Thomas Calzada. I do know that Pedro and Trinidad were from Thomas's first marriage. Thomas remarried. I'm not sure when but sometime after 1921...Trinidade died from a drowning accident sometime around 1935-36. My name is Kim Calzada, daughter in-law of Pedro and wife to Pedro's youngest son Angel Calzada.
