I'm looking for information on my 4th great grandmother, Minerva Elizabeth Cortright, born March 22, 1879 in New Jersey. She was married to Phillip Addison Wolverton and their children were Tilden (or Tilton) J. Wolverton and Caria (or Carrie) Wolverton. She's being linked to Josephine Wolverton through the census pages for some reason & I can't find any more information than that on her. If anyone has any information and could supply me with it, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

H. Bush Cortright was my Greatgrandfather and lived on Wall St. and ran a fish store downtown around the corner from the American Store. Francis was his brother who was killed in an accident when a train struck his brothers truck . Bush was driving. My mother was raised by Bush and she ofter told me that Bush was one of the founders of the Fire Company. I have more information and get to Belvidere often maybe we could get together then. Louis was a grandson of Bush and I'm not sure who Charles was but I probably have the info in my genealogy data on the family.

Cornelius Cortright/Courtright Confusion!

Cornelius Cortright/Courtright Confusion!

During the late 1700’s and thru the 1850’s, there were at least three people with the name of Cornelius Cortright or Courtright living in the vicinity of the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania. Luzerne County was formed from Northampton County in 1786 with Wilkes-Barre the county seat. There were also two living in the state of New York.

If you browse through the Cortright/Courtright Family Trees posted on Ancestry.com you will find all kinds of combinations of the various people named Cornelius or Catherine Courtright or Cortright. Most are incorrect and are the product of people just stringing names together without any real research. I hope this posting will help those researching their ancestors whose names were Cortright, Courtright, Kortryk or some other variation!

My wife’s family descends from Cornelius Cortright (2) and his wife Catherine Winter. I would be happy to compare notes with anyone who is researching these lines.

Larry M. Hutchinson, Gilbert, AZ
bankhutch2@gmail.com

Cornelius Courtright Esq. 1764-1848

The Cornelius that shows up most often in searches is Cornelius Courtright, Esquire. He was born 7 Mar 1764 in Pike County, in Pennsylvania and married Catherine Kennedy in 1786. He was a large land holder and a Luzerne County official. His name is on many county records and not always, but mostly, with the Esquire or Esq. title behind his name. He died in 1848 and was buried in Wilkes-Barre and later moved to Erie Cemetery in Erie, Pennsylvania. See Find A Grave # 76574275.

Some of his children are: Mary, Benjamin, Catherine, John, Henry, Elizabeth, Hannah, Lucinda, Eleanor, and Milton.

His genealogy was well researched many years ago and it is all laid out in the Abbott book on the Courtright family.

See: COURTRIGHT (KORTRIGHT) FAMILY DESCENDANTS OF
BASTIAN VAN KORTRYK, A Native of Belgium who Emigrated to Holland about 1615" by Abbott, published in 1922.

Cornelius V. Courtright 1776-1836

This Cornelius is often confused with Cornelius Cortright (2) because of his birth date. He was born in New York in 1776 and died 28 Dec 1836 in Tioga County, New York. He married Phoebe Decker and it appears he lived all of his life in New York. He shows up in the 1810, 1820 and 1830 census in Tioga and Cayuga Counties in New York. His genealogy is also contained in the Abbott book above and he is buried in Weltonville Cemetery, Tioga County, New York. See Find A Grave # 82441521.

Some of his children are: Simeon, Samuel and Edmund.

Cornelius Cortright (2) abt 1776-1856

This Cornelius was born about 1776 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania and often shows up in official records with a (2) after his name. His family was in the Wyoming Valley well before the American Revolution but his parents are unknown at this time. He was called “Case” and was a shoemaker. He married Catherine Winter, daughter of Peter Winter, a blacksmith, of Jenkins Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He was a large land holder and had a large family. Cornelius Cortright (2) shows up in Wilkes-Barre Township in the 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840 and 1850 U. S. Census. His burial location is also unknown at this time. His name usually is spelled without the “u” and his descendants generally used the spelling “Cortright”.

His genealogy is much more elusive than the others above. A granddaughter, Katherine Cortright Barton, began the research in the 1940’ and 1950’s mostly for DAR purposes and her work has given us his basic family structure.

The children from this family are: Elizabeth, born 1801, married Jacob Good; Sarah; Mary; Ellen, born abt 1810, married Abraham St. Clair; Margaret, born abt 1811, married George Hoffman; Ira born about 1812, married Margaret Sherry; Butler, born abt 1815, married Elizabeth Siglin; Lyman born 1822, married Anna Siglin; Cornelius born 1823, died in Popular Grove, Illinois in 1857; and Edward Stewart born 1826 in Wilkes-Barre, married Eliza Covey, and died in Butler County, Iowa in 1900.

Sources for Cornelius Cortright (2) can be found in the following:

The Michael Shoemaker Book, (Shumacher), William T. Blair, International Textbook Press, Scranton, PA, 1924, page 487.

Rev. Horace Edwin Hayden, ed, Wyoming & Lackawanna Valleys, Pennsylvania Genealogies & Family Histories, Vol. I & II (New York, NY, USA: The Lewis Publishing Company, 1906), page 432.

Letters and Family Group Sheets from Mrs. Kathryn M. Cortright Barton 1892-1982 (904 West 1st Street, Waterloo, Iowa) to Faye Cortright Hutchinson, 1971

Another Cornelius Cortright from New York

Also found in the Minisink Valley Reformed Dutch Church records: 1716-1830, New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, page 87, and in the above mentioned Abbott book on the Courtright family, page 48, there is also a Cornelius Cortright and his wife, Hannah Steele. They had children baptized in the church there: Sarah in 1816, Nelly in 1819, Mariah in 1820, Amanda 1823, and Daniel in 1828. There is no genealogy for this couple in the Abbott book and they are mentioned in a type of footnote. There is no evidence that they ever lived in Pennsylvania.
Leslie Norman Cortright was an older brother of Moses Wilson Cortright. They were sons of Levi Cortright, b. 1841 in Wantage NJ. Leslie and Moses were born in Jones Township near Wilcox, Elk, Pa. There were nine children in the family of Levi and his wife, Mary Young. Edna Mae was wife of Moses. Moses was named for Levi's brother, Moses Wilson Cortright, who led the NYC police department around the beginning of the 20th Century and was called, by the NY Times, the 'honest cop.'
Cornelius Cortright born abt 1777 Luzerne County, PA

I am trying to construct the family of Cornelius Cortright born abt 1777 in Luzerne County, PA. He was married to Catherine Winters of Jenkins Township, Luzerne County. His children were Elizabeth 1801-1888 married Jacob Good; Sarah; Mary; Ellen 1810-1849 married St. Clair; Margaret, 1810-1849 married Hoffman, Ira 1812-1883 married Sherry; Butler 1815-1883, married Siglin; Lyman 1822-1867, married Siglin; Cornelius 1823-1857, died in Illinois; and Edward S. 1826-1900 married Covey and died in Iowa. This Cornelius is easily confused with Cornelius Cortright Esq born 1764 and married Catherine Kennedy.. they are not the same man. If anyone has ties to this family…. Please contact me. L.

Hello, my name is Janice L. Cortright now Janice Pitts. The names of Charles/Henrietta Warsko were submitted to the Genealogy Library in Salt Lake City, UT. as part of my family 's four generation sheet. My mother, Dorothy Warsko Cortright, 96 years young, is still alive but does not remember very much. I've tried to jog her memory, because as I have worked on my genealogy over a long period of time, I have more and more question. However, my cousin, John Warsko, who lives in Indiana is the Warsko/Ruhno historian and has loads of information. I do not have his e-mail address with me as I am currently in California visiting my brother. I live in Salem, Oregon now. My e-mail address is Janicepitts2@aol.com I am writing to you on my brother's computer and just by chance looked a little deeper into Ancestry.com than I usually do. I will be here in California until October 6 so you could respond to me here until then if you wish.

I don't have any Finigans or an enda Gunderman in my records. Perhaps try posting on those surname boards.
There were quite a few Gunderman families in the area. Its possible Enda is a grandchild of Samuel's, several generations ahead, from this time period.
Good Luck

Awesome! This has been a dead end for me for awhile. I am a direct descendent of Charles A. Courtright (spelled Cortright now). My granpda who is 90 is Charles Cortright, who is the son of Josepth Cortright and the grandson of Charles A. Courtright. He remembes that his granndpa had a brother named Chauncey, but never knew anymore information other than his name. What is your ancestor line?

What I don't understand is, why does it say that Charles courtright and Chauncy Courtright are the children of B.R. and Susan Gunderman? Perhaps they were adopted?

I would love to talk with you once we can piece together how we are related.

Regards
Jason Stoops

My line is Jason Stoops/Debra Stoops (nee Cortright)/Charles Cortright / Joe Courtright / Charles A.
E. J. Cortright, wife Margaret of Illinois and Iowa 1800s

I am placing the same query I placed almost 3 years ago with no responses; hoping this one will bring some answers, since the question still is: How is E.J. Cortright a brother in law to Henry Adam Hoffman (1846-1931) born in York County, PA to Levi Hoffman and Catharine Berkheimer.
The Civil War pension papers I am working with has a deposition from: E.J. Cortright, age 29, of New Hartford, Butler, Iowa who is a brother in law to Henry Adam Hoffman. I have tracked E.J. to find that he is Edward James Cortright, born Illinois; married to a Margaret E. (---) born Illinois, (1860-1937). The date of the deposition is 12 June 1886, New Hartford, Butler, Iowa.
I do not have a Margaret Hoffman on my database and cannot locate one - can anyone be of help in solving this mystery? I have no idea at this point how E.J. can be a brother in law to Henry Adam Hoffman.... the Cortrights are buried in OakHill Cemetery, Butler, Iowa... Henry Adam is also buried here.

Found George and Cassie Porter under "Portes" in 1920/1930 CA census and a Chris Courtright is boarder with them. Wondering who he/she may be? Son Samuel Porter lived with Uncle Francis Courtright in 1920 in ID. But we have no Chris in our family line.

still seeking Jackson Courtright dob: abt 1828 maybe Indiana

This is my GGGrandfather, Jackson married widow Mary Jane Strong Gray in 1865, MO. Her two kids, John and Rebecca remained with them for several years. Then Francis Marion (or Frank) was born 1866 and Cassie Ellen born in Maries Co., 1869. Major T. may have been born in MO or Iowa. Two girls, Laura Bell and Ida May are born later in Iowa. A son attributed to them is Thomas Meril, born in Harrison (wherever that is) this child may have died in NE...but he is never mentioned in our family history. Family continued to travel, went to ID and some stayed. Jackson & Mary Jane went on to California. Some of the kids eventually moved their families to CA. My family visited CA but always returned to ID. We are trying to locate from who and where Jackson originated from. Some evidence he may be connected to Noah Courtwright of MO and Martin Courwright. Have plenty census info from 1870's on. Need family in Humbodlt, Co. (Arcata) CA area to confirm relations. Cassie married George Porter. Clifford Hill and Frederick Haley were spouses of Ida May and Laura Bell. If anyone is familiar with the names of these cousins please respond! Thank you.
Moses Cortright

Denise

My Cortrights are on my mothers side. The earliest that I know of (verbal from my mother) is Moses. I was told that he operated the Riverton Hotel just across the Delaware river from Belvidere NJ. His son Henry Bush Cortright was my GGgrandfather, He was born in 1859, I believe in Northampton Co. PA. This is the county that the Riverton Hotel is in. This is only a guess, I don't have H.B. Cortrights actually place of birth. He died in 1933 and is buried in the town cemetary in Belvidere NJ along with many more Cortrights.

Hope this connects with your Cortrights.

Lou Caudill

Cortright family of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania

Thankyou for your reply. I am indeed seeking
information on Cortright"s within the NJ, NY
and PA area. My father's side of the family
is proving a challenge, as information is seemingly scarce. I never knew my grandfather or great-grandfather, as my grandfather grandmother separated when my father was 16 yrs. of age. (Long story)
These are the "CORTRIGHT'S" I seek info
about.
1. JESSIE CORTRIGHT m. MARGARET SMITH
(My great-grandfather grandmother)
2. HAROLD DURWOOD CORTRIGHT m. ALICE RUTH
ACTON (My grandfather grandmother)
I recently received a copy of HAROLD'S original social security application. He
listed his address (1936) in BELLEVILLE, NJ.
His employment was listed in HARRISON, NJ
My father: ROBERT WILLIAM CORTRIGHT was born
in BELLEVILLE, NJ, and spent most of his childhood in PORT JERVIS, NY. JESSIE and
HAROLD are my puzzle. There were a great
many CORTRIGHT'S resided in the Tri-state area. I was born in PORT JERVIS, NY, and
grew up in MILFORD, PA. Do you by chance have any WOOD'S, or STARK'S within your
family? I seemingly have CORTRIGHT'S on
both my mother and father's sides of the family, with none connecting thus far. The name WILSON is also a 1800's branch on my
father's side. My E-Mail add. is:
stillwtr@digitalusa.net
Thanx again
