Before you post make sure your information is creditable. Unless you have documentation to prove what you are posting keep it to yourself. There are so many errors with the Martin Corum Family in TN that I had to go to the library to clarify the information so much was false I deleted y orum tree and started all over again. Dont post unless you can back up your findings example census, marriage license, etc.

Where are your Corums from? There seem to be two distinctly separate groups of Coram/Corum's. One from the northern half of the US, and the other the southern half. My line comes from the southern half--Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri. I have no familiarity at all with the northern group. My Tennessee Corams are ALL from the eastern part of the state, mostly around Knox and Grainger Counties. My original Silas Coram/Corum (it was spelled both ways until well into the 1850's) moved into Kentucky in 1829-1830 and settled down. It's a big joke in our family that there are only 3 known north-of-the-Ohio-River-born Corams in existence--me (Dayton, OH), my cousin Marge (born in Chicago), and my cousin Henry (born in Detroit), and that because of that, the 3 of us should be kicked out of our southern family...!
Do you have anymore information on James Sr? I have seen many Corums named James in Loudoun and want to narrow him down. Do you know his birthdate or parents names? I have many Corum branches in my family in Loudoun, Fairfax, Prince William and Fauquier and am trying to connect them all.

Memorial to Judge William G. Corum, 1924

The original of the following transcribed memorial to Judge William G. Corum was found in the loose Chancery Court documents held by the Grainger County Archives in Rutledge, Tennessee:

IN THE MATTER OF THE DEATH OF JUDGE W. G. CORUM, A MEMBER OF THIS BAR AND THE CLERK & MASTER OF THIS COURT.

TO HONORABLE E. R. TAYLOR, CHANCELLOR:

Your committee heretofore appointed to draft and present to the court a suitable memorial in respect of Judge W. G. Corum, a member of this bar and at the time of his death the Clerk & Master of this court, beg to report the following:

W. G. Corum was born in Grainger County Jan. 29th, 1869. He was married to Miss Margaret Chesher Dec. 29th, 1889, and died Dec. 10th, 1924, at the Knoxville General Hospital, where he had gone for treatment. There was born to him and his wife, who survives him, the following children:

Edna, who married Johnson Shaver, now residing in Alabama; Dessie, who married Hugh Waller; Maude, who married C. B. Cabbage; Robert, Ramon and Curtis, all of whom live at Rutledge. Fred, the oldest son, died about three years ago and is buried at Rutledge.

Judge Corum, as he was generally known to the public and to his friends and associates, was born and lived his life in Grainger County, and in the earth of that county his remains rest. He was active in its affairs and was honored by its people many times. As a young man he taught school. Later he was elected to the office of Justice of the Peace. Still later he became Deputy Clerk & Master of this court and afterwards Clerk & Master, which position he resigned to become a candidate for and was elected County Judge in 1904, as the date is recalled, to fill out the remaining six years of the term, and later, in 1910, was elected for the full term of eight years. He was not a candidate for re-election. He had studied law and been admitted to the bar during the time that Judge W. R. Hicks was the presiding Judge of the Circuit Court of this county and after his term of office resumed the practice of law.

Upon the death of Mr. W. T. Phillips, the incumbent, he was appointed Clerk & Master of this court by Hon. M. H. Gamble, the then Chancellor, which position he was holding at the time of his death. In addition to the foregoing Judge Corum had twice been a member of the Pike Commission for Grainger County and without stepping aside from the cold facts it is to be said of him that he, perhaps, more than any one, was responsible for the building of the excellent pikes, especially the valley pike from near Tate Station to the Grainger and Knox County line. Stated differently, Judge Corum was a progressive man with broad vision.

As a lawyer Judge Corum was well read—more so than was generally understood—in his profession. He had a working knowledge of almost every branch of the law. His most remarkable trait, not only in his profession, but in his relations with other men, was his clarity of expression. He made use of the pure Anglo-Saxon tongue with its direct appeal and simple words. He could express himself in such plain and simple language and so clearly that not only the learned Judge on the Bench but the most uneducated person who heard him easily understood. He could state his contention on any proposition of law or fact so that those hearing him could easily understand.

It was rarely ever in his later years, due to his state of health, that he made an argument in court; but when he did, as the members of the bar here know, his lucidity and clearness was remarkable. Among the profession it is considered as the first and highest trait of a lawyer to be able to do this. He was essentially suited to the practice in courts of Chancery. And in the dignity of that court, where justice, pure logic and reason alone reign, he was in his element.

As an official Judge Corum left an honorable record. Being a man of high moral courage he was not susceptible to flattery nor could he be swayed by any question of expediency. As Deputy Clerk & Master, County Judge and Clerk & Master he was remarkable. He followed his conception of right and duty regardless. When last appointed he followed Hon. W. T. Phillips as Clerk & Master of this court. It was rare, indeed, to find in office as capable a man as Mr. Phillips. Yet it was said of Judge Corum that he was the equal as Clerk & Master of Mr. Phillips and even those who opposed him politically conceded that he was an official of the highest type. It is said of him that during his last term that only upon one occasion was a report made by him excepted to and that only pro forma. His reports were remarkable for their clearness and there never was a report made but what was approved by the Chancellor. He kept in close touch with the files in his office. His records were beautifully gotten up; in short if one searched for a fault during the administration of his office it would be almost impossible to find it.

As a man Judge Corum’s life was beautiful. He was a consistent member of the Baptist Church at Rutledge and lived up to his vows. He was a reticent man, not given to talking much, yet he loved with a deep and tender love his family and enjoyed nothing more than to be gathered with his wife and children around the family fireside. During the years preceding his death he suffered. The disease which brought about his death was making inroads, bringing in its train suffering, both mental and physical. Judge Corum made no complaint. He bore his sufferings in silence. He looked death squarely in the face without trembling and faced without faltering the future, secure in his belief that there was another and better land and with a God whom he worshiped as its Supreme Ruler. He was a mason; had been Master of his Lodge two or more times. He believed in the immortality of the soul and of a life hereafter. He accepted and relied without question upon the certainty that if a man die he would live again.

With this preamble we submit to the court:
1.	That in the death of Judge W. G. Corum, Grainger County has lost one of its most upright and progressive citizens, his wife a devoted husband and his children a loving and tender father.
2.	That the Chancery Court of Grainger County has lost perhaps its ablest and best official.
3.	That the bar of Grainger County has lost one of its strongest members.

And in loving recollection of his many good qualities, his patience, integrity and forbearance your committee presents the above and asks that it be entered upon the minutes of the court as a perpetual memorial to his earthly activities.

Respectfully submitted,
W. N. Hickey
A. C. Samsel
J. G. Waller

Committee.
James Thomas Corum, possible grandson of Lemuel Corum

I have received copies of the estate settlement for Lemuel Corum of Lauderdale Co, AL. I have been trying to place my missing James Thomas Corum in a family, and based on the following I think I now have a home for him.

Court document dtd 29 March 1893 lists the following heirs:
Thornton Corum
Charlotte Corum
Susan Corum
James Corum
Louisa Barnett
B. F. Corum
Mint Corum
J. T. Corum
Mary Corum
Ed Howell - heir of Catharine Howell

Following is the list of people cited in the final settlement dtd 1899: (I am adding info in prens)
Jane Corum (Widow)
Thornton Corum (s/o Lemuel)
Charlotte Coroum (d/o Lemuel)
Susan King (d/o Lemuel)
James Corum (s/o Lemuel)
Louisa Barnett (d/o Lemuel)
B. F. Corum (s/o Lemuel)
Mint Corum (s/0 Lemuel)
J. T. Corum (I believe this to be the son of John Turner and therefore a grandson of Lemuel)
Mary Corum (d/o Lemuel)
Ed. Howell (husband or relative of Nancy Catherine Elizabeth Corum)
Henry Corum (listed as the brother of Wm Howell in attached note)
George Barnett - See Louisa Barnett
Catherine Barnett
James Barnett
Lemuel Barnett
Charity Ida Barnett

With the above names all children of Lemuel can be accounted for, except George Corum (must have died as a child) and John Turner who died at the battle of Shiloh.

I have the death certificate of my husband's great grandfather one James Thomas Corum. No parents are listed, but it does list his birth as: 27 Feb 1863, Lauderdale Co., AL. If one does a search of the 1870 Lauderdale census, when my James Thomas would have been seven years old, the only male meeting these facts is a James T or F Corum listed in the household of Lemuel Corum with his mother listed as Mishaniah Corum. I believe her to be the widow of the John Turner who was killed at the battle of Shiloh. Most people see this census and cite her son to be James F, but if one looks closely at the census, then it appears to me to be a line on paper or on the lens of the camera, and in fact it is James T. not James F.

In the estate settlement there is a signature in two places of a J. T. Corum. I know that John Turner has died, and any child of his would be entitled to a child's portion of the estate. James Thomas Corum ran for public office in Madison County, Alabama, and the court papers dtd 1932 list him as J. T. Corum. Also looking at the writting, there is an "F" written in the name Benj. Frank,(s/o Lemuel) and there is definitely a defference between the "F". in Benj. Frank. name and the "T" written in the J. T. listed

If someone can prove other words, I am claiming my husband's g grandfather to be a grandson of Lemuel Corum and I am citing the estate settlement as the paper trail!

Please let me know if anyone who descends from this Lemuel Corum of Lauderdale County can tell me if I am on the right or wrong trail.

Thanks

Nelindra Ann Corum
wife of Johnny Corum
NKCorum@aol.com

I was born and raised in Tampa, but many of my "met one time" relatives were from Madisonville Kentucky. I am trying to do a family tree and cannot find how they are related or where any of them are today.
The older 2 Corums (most likely no longer with us) were a DR. Corum and Ashby Corum (who owned a dairy). He was my father's uncle. Ashby's son was William and his daughter was called "Libby", possibly a nick name. I have picture of ayoung girl as a flower girl in 1956 named Vicki Lynn Corum. She would be about my age. I would love to find any information connecting these to my family and purhaps finding them. My father was George Roger Corum, His father was Harrison Lee Corum (married twice, my grandmother was Cora Magnolia (Nora) Stallsworth Corum. My grandfather, Harrison was born out of wedlock to Susan (who later married a Wilson). Harrison was raised by his grandparents Richard and Mary.
Love to hear more information....
THANKS'
Patricia Gail Corum Johnson
pjohnsoneds@charter.net

I, too, would love to find out about my Native American heritage. I was told all my life my grandmother on the Corum side was Cherokee that escaped the "trail of tears". I have yet to find any indication especially since I seemed to have traced my fathers parents back to Virginia and England. Quite confussed.... My father is no longer living, so I am having a hard time finding any helpful information. I just began searching about 6 months ago.
My grandfather/grandmother wast Harrison Lee Corum and Cora Magnolia (Nola) Stallsworth. Her parents were Junway's. It would be great to make that native american connection. THANKS for any information.
Patricia Gail Corum Johnson
Pjohnsoneds@charter.net

I have done my mitochondrial DNA, Haplogroup F, which goes through Davey Ann Corum, of Kentucky, dtr of David Henry Corum and Joanne Lewis, mid 1850's in Kentucky. So, maybe that helps, but only for the Corums from Joanne Lewis (as this is mitochondrial DNA only).

I have just started to trace my Corum roots and also have been told there is an American Indian connection. My grandfather was born in Obion, TN and my father was born in Missouri. I am unclear of the tribe but think I was told it was either Cree or Creek. Have you had any luck with your research?

Hi Ellen!

I sort of don't think that your Mary Ann and mine are the same person. My Mary Ann was born in Livingston Co., Kentucky (in the far southwest corner of Kentucky), and she married a Hinson Koon. That was her ONLY marriage, and after her husband died, she lived with one of her sons until she died. My e-mail address is: kayco@erinet.com. If you'd like, please send me your e-mail address, and I can send my Coram information to you. Hope to hear from you soon! :-) Kay Coram

I just found the post where you mentioned a GEDCOM of the Corum line. My husband's gg-grandmother was Mary Ann Corum of Grainger Co., TN, b. abt. 1817, who married Thomas Smith. With the Smiths in my own line, I usually just give up (because there are so many it just seems impossible to find a link), so I was delighted to make the link to Mary Ann's maiden name. I would appreciate anything you could share about this family, and I would be more than happy to share anything I have on Mary Ann's descendents if you are interested.

Thank you,

Ellen Stockstill

I have 2 Moran Corum ancestors, I don't know if they are related to each other. They live a few houses from each other in 1870 Prince William Co. They are older than your 1899, but they could still be related to your Moran. Most of my Corums are from Aldie too. Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Aldie, Loudoun is where I have linked some to.

His first marriage was to Ellen Herndon, don't remember if his second was to a Margie, or his second to Ginny. It may be that his second was to Ginny and third to Margie. Then his fourth was to Malissa Sowders and Malissa was killed with him.
