No, I am afraid that nothing on David Corwin, b. 1733 survives except that which is to be found in the ETCorwin book or the Salmon papers (of no help concerning his later life). I recall working long on sorting out the families of the Orange County Corwins, and I don't think that much can be done without attacking the entire Orange County Corwin population. Best of luck.
What a bummer, David... I have Hannah Finch and Joseph Corwin in my lineage, through their daughter Sarah Jane married to George Miller. I am looking to reprove Joseph's father, for DAR patriotic service, so was wondering what happened to him. David Corwin, born 1733 Southold, NY, died in Ulster County, NY 1796.

Unless your memory is outstanding... you may not have access to any data. So sorry to hear about your crash. Thanks for the reply.
Hey there. My name is Alyce Corwin. Leo Scott Corwin is my great grandfather as well as Franklin's brother. My father still owns the farm in Sanger,ND that Leo married into over 70years ago. That farm has been in our family over 100years now. Both my grandfather William Woodrow and my father William Jeffery grew up on it. My siblings and I as well. I was wondering what happened to Frank's side of the family. From what my dad tells me Leo was working on the railroad when he met his wife(Mary Harmon) in ND. I knew he was from OH but its very hard to find info on living relatives. Most of my family is scattered now. Only my dad remains on the homestead.

Following up on my posting about DNA testing. I have just made contact with the one other Corwin who has submitted his DNA sample to FTDNA. His sample matched my sample.
Corwin DNA Testing

Several years ago I submitted my Y-Chromosome DNA sample to the FT-DNA system at the 37-marker level, which should give some pretty good matching data. However I've had virtually no 37-marker matches, which indicates that there are no other Corwin's who have submitted DNA samples (and I don't have matches for another surname that might indicate I'm Corwin by name but not by blood).
So, I'm wondering if any of you fine Corwin folks have submitted DNA samples. And I'd like to encourage you to do so if you haven't. It can be a very useful tool for research, it's proven invaluable for my research into another one of my lines.
The website is at www.familytreedna.com
Just food for thought...
Kevin E Corwin
Matthias, John, John, John, John, Hubbard, Jabin, Charles D, Walter F, Walter W, Walter W Jr, Kevin

You give very little information concerning John F. Corwin, that might help identify him, such as names of children, date and place of death, etc. I take it that you have not found him in any census, as a census would at least have given his state of birth.

Birth in 1863 could mean that he was born in 1863 or that the date was calculated and could be off by a year or two. The 1870 census of Lewiston, Niagara County, New York, has a John F. Corwin, 39, with wife Margaret, 39, and five children including John F., age 8. When the family appears in the 1880 census son John F.'s older sister Lillian is still with the family, 21, but older sister Emma, who would be 20, is no longer there nor is John F., who would have been 18.

On the other hand, the 1910 census of Rochester, Ward 2, Monroe County, New York, has a John F. Corwin, 46, with wife Elizabeth, 42, and children John N., 23, Bessie, 20, and apparently granddaughter Ruth N., 11/12.

I don't have any idea whether the John F. of 1910 is the one of 1870 or whether either of them are in your line, but it could be worth exploring.

Linda, I just had to respond to Doug Couch's "attack" on your recent posting. It was one of the most demeaning, sarcastic and rude postings I have ever read! Shame on him! How thoughtful and helpful of you to share what information you had discovered. Doug could have offered suggestions with regards to the response posting of someone's inquiry, instead of his blatant rambling. Also, perhaps he should double check his posting before sending it off (i.e., grammatical errors, extra spaces, incorrect use of ellipses, long-winded sentences, plus short choppy sentences). One more thing, using all caps is the same as shouting. I am sorry that you received such a nasty message. I noticed that he married to a Corwin, not one himself. Take care.

I think it unlikely to the point of impossibility that the line of Barzilla Corwin passed through either Lebanon, Ohio, or Morris County, New Jersey. As you know, my Corwin material was destroyed about three years ago but I had done extensive work on all branches of the Corwins and was pretty certain that he was a son of Asa or Amasa Corwin of Onondaga, New York, as tammyprout59 said in her posting of 22 December 2010. She lists an Amasa Corwin as a descendant, and none of names that she lists are names found in the line of Ichabod Corwin.

One of the contributors to the problem spoke of an Asa Ichabod Corwin, but Ichabod Corwin (an ancestor of mine) had no name Asa. The name is alien to that branch of the familyl. ETCorwin corresponded extensively with the Lebanon, Ohio, Corwin before publishing "The Corwin Genealogy" in 1870 but knew of no Barzalul under any spelling. It looks to me as though any belief that the Barzilla line came through Morris County, New Jersey, is the consequence of the confusion of Asa Corwin of New York with Ichabod Corwin and then working back on his line. But it is the wrong line.

Anyone interested in working on the theory that Barzilla Corwin was related to the Lebanon, Ohio, Corwins would do well to consult E. T. Corwin's book and to correspond with the Warren County Historical Society. The Corwins were founders of Lebanon, and there is a great deal of material on them in the society's archives.

I think you are making a wise bet. From what I've found, Jesse and Keziah moved from Morris Co., NJ to Washington Co., PA and then on to Kentucky in the early 1790's. I have not followed their children except to know of two sons, Icabod and Matthias. It was written in a genealogy attributed to Eckstein Case that Leonard Eckstein became restless and moved over the mountains to Kentucky with Matthias Corwin. I find it somewhat strange that Matthias Corwin's parents Jesse and Keziah were not mentioned in the writing.
Jesse Corwin's brother John married Jane?-Nancy Jane? aka "Agnes" Shepler. I about fell over when I found Morris Corwin's mother was a Shepler. My gg grandfather's sister Mary Jane, aka "Aunt Polly Corwin" Smock and Morris Corwin were married in 1816 in Brownsville, Fayette Co., PA up the Monongahela river from Belevernon PA where they lived.

I have a lot of Morris and Mary's descendents almost to the present. If you have information on those from Jesse and Keziah or of Mathias or Icabod, I would really like to eschange with you...... Thanks

I was just reading through your information since I now have a copy of the Corwin Family book. The following paragraph caught my eye..
"The family was at page 27B of the 1870 census of Ward 16, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. There the husband appeared as Charles L. [sic], Publisher of paper, born in New York, with wife Anna, 25, born in Michigan, and son Charles 12, born in Michigan. (The 1880 census had said that Charles was born in Illinois, but such discrepancies are not uncommon."
Anna is 25 with a son Charles that is 12. I found her in a census for 1860 for Illinois and she is unmarried and is 14.What I find interesting is where did Anna disappear to - I can't find a death notice or cemetery listing for her and yet Charles shows up later on with a wife named Mabel.
Oh well...the two Corwin families that show up in the DNA listing database - would these be your family?

Re: Daniel CORWIN of New York

Daniel Corwin with wife Ruth is mentioned on page 35 of ETC. Concerning him ETC says only "In 1795, Daniel Corwin and Ruth, his wife, of New-Cornwall, Orange Co., N.Y., sold land in Cayuga Co. to William Corwin In 1801 and 1802 sold land to Barnabas Corwin. Sold land again in 1803 and 1808. In 1808, they were of Milton, Cayuga Co., N. Y. In 1827-35, we find a Daniel Corwin having a son Daniel dealing in land in Cayuga Co. He is said to be of the town of Genoa, formerly Milton. In 1830, Daniel, Jr. buys land of his father."'

ETC listed that Daniel with wife Ruth as a son of his 3 Daniel and Temperance Bailey. It is clear that they had sons Daniel, Henry, and Nathaniel, but Henry and Nathaniel remained on Long Island, and there is no reason to believe that Daniel did not remain there as well.

lSome years ago I worked extensively on all descendants of the immigrant Matthias and found that ETC was often unreliable with respect to those descendants of Matthias's son Theophilus who went up to Orange County. Much of what he stated as fact was actually speculation. My extensive notes were destroyed, but a surviving chart shows that I believed Daniel Corwin whose wife was Ruth to be a son of ETC's 4 Theophilus

I VERY tentatively assigned to 4 Theophllus sons George, Barnabas, Abner, and Daniel . ETC listed instead Mary? David? George? Jonathan? For reasons I no longer know I placed the birth of Theophilus's son Daniel in 1767.

I find that I listed the children of Daniel and Ruth Corwin as Silas, Hannah, Daniel, daughter, daughter, Theophilus, John, George. I no longer know what would have given me the existence of children whose names I could not identify, Probably the 1790 and 1800 censuses??

I find that I listed as children of Daniel and Ruth Corwin Silas, Hannah, Daniel, daughter, daughter, Theophilus, John, George. I no longer know why.

Unless you happily come across a document answering your question, I suspect that you will not be able to identify with certainty the parents of your Daniel Corwin, husband of Ruth. I could tell you of a number of descendants of the earliest Theophilus who was not Daniel's parents but not with any certainty of the one who was.

I Am the second Great Granddaughter of Asa Corwin born in Ohio, date unknown. The only factual info I have on him is that he married Nancy P Gillespie on 15 Jun 1820 in Hamilton, Butler, OH and they had my Great Grandfather Asa Corwin in 1832. In 1830 he (Asa Sr) lived in St Clair, Butler, OH, in 1840 he lived in Ross, Butler, OH. Nancy Gillespie Corwin lived with her parents in 1850 (no marital status mentioned). In 1860, she is living with her parents again, her son Asa next door, still no mention of husband Asa. In 1870 she is boarding with a family named Sterret, alone and in 1880 she is boarding with a family named Trembly and is listed as a widow. Since Lebanon is only 20 miles away from Hamilton I was wondering if you had run into any Asa's who could have belonged to that famous Corwin family, or have any knowledge of the Asa Corwin who was married to Nancy and his ancestry. I have searched everywhere and written to as many people as I can think of.

Corwin, Martin Corwin, Daniel Theophilus Corwin, John Corwin, Eliza Jane Corwin, Nicholas Egbert Corwin and Mira Ann Corwin. I also have Daniels father and mother as Daniel Corwin and Ruth but nothing else. I am trying to find a way to trace it back a little farther. When I look as some of the names in ETC book a lot of my familys names are the same. I think that maybe my family is also from the lineage but ?????
Daniels son Albert J Corwin is my 3rd Great-Grandfather.
Maybe some one can help me out.

And I am sorry, too. I should have said that they came in the 1600's, not the 1800s. In order not to fill up rootsweb with correspondence i suggest that after this message we switch to email. I am at d.a.macd@comcast.net

Your earlier message sent me to the library for a quick and dirty search. The Paul C. Corwin of Aliceville, Piekcne County, Alabama turns up in the 1820 census as a son of Paul C. Corwin, 45, born in Illinois, both parents born in New York, married to Mabel E. Corwin, 28, born in Alabama, both parents born in Alabama, with children Mary F,, 4 years 10 months, born in Alabama, and Paul C. Corwin, Jr., 2 years 9 months, born in Alabama.

I did not find the family in the 1910 or 1900 censuses. The 1890 census was destroyed.

The only Paul Corwin of the right age in the 1880 census was at Enumeration District 241, page 412D, of the census of Hudson, St. Croix County, Wisconsin. He was Paul, 4, born in Illinois, in the family of Charles Corwin, 39, born in New York, Congregational Clergyman, father born in Connecticut, mother born inNew York. Wife Annie Corwin, 34, was born in Michigan, as were both parents. Children: Charles, 12, Ellen 9, Paul 4, all born in Illinois, unnamed infant, 4 months, place of birth not noted.

The family was at page 27B of the 1870 census of Ward 16, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. There the husband appeared as Charles L. [sic], Publisher of paper, born in New York, with wif eAnna, 25, born in Michigan, and son Charles 12, born in Michigan. (The 1880 census had said that Charles was born in Illinois, but such discrepancies are not uncommon.

The only plausible family in the 1860 census was at page 147 of the census of the Town of Wallkill, Orange County, New York. All were born in New York. Father, William C. Corwin, 49, farmer; mother, Lydia A.(Smith) Corwin, 48; Children: Charles E. [sic] 19, farm laborer; SArah A. 18; Clarissa, 15; in household, Mary E. Mapes, 24; Harrison C. Mapes, 1; James Morrissey, 24, farm laborer. (According to ETE, page 26, Charles E. was born on 22 December 1839.

The family of William Corwin appears at page 225 of E. T. Corwin's standard 1870 genealogy of the family. He was born in New YOrk 19 February 1811, son of Benjamin Corwin, mother not known to ETC. Wife Lydia A., born 22 December 1831. Children: Ira M., Mary E., Charles E., Sarah A., Benjamin, Clarissa.

E. T. Corwin carries the line of William Corwin back to the immigrant. I checked the line out some years ago, and it is accurate (although ETC's lies were not always accurate) from the immigrant Matthias down to William. His tracing of the line back beyond Matthias, however, is entirely incorrect.

Of the line I know no more than what I have just given you from the censuses or than can be found in ETC's book.. The records of my own search of Matthias Corwin's descendants were destroyed.

When I "googled" Charlton Corwin, your post appeared. I was trying to find information on a sister (Deborah Orton) of my gg grandfather Lyman Osgood Orton. Deborah married Rev. Jason Corwin and they had a son Charlton Corwin of Jefferson, MO. (This according to Thomas Orton of Windsor, CT Genealogy.)

I also found accounts of Charlton Warren Corwin's heroic activities in WW II, and noticed he was from MO. Am I correct in thinking that he descends from Rev. Jason Corwin and Deborah Orton? She was b. 1802, Hamilton, Madison Co. NY, the dau. of Thomas and Beulah Rockwood Orton.

You have given very little useful information on Paul Charlton Corwin, and that is contradictory. A man bon in 1876 was not born in 1840.
If your question concerns Paul C. Corwin who was listed as 45 in the 1920 census of Aliceville, Pickens County, Alabama, I believe that I can give you information that will carry the line back to Matthias Corwin, who came to America in the 1830's.

Betsey Drake and William Corwin

I am looking for William Corwin who married Betsey Drake, sister of Francis Drake of Lansing who married Anna Corwin in Orange Co., NY. Betsey would have been born between 1760 and 1770. William and Betsey Corwin were reported to have lived in Ohio. I have found a William Corwin living in Kingsville, Ashtabula Co., Ohio in 1820 and 1830. He is living next to Seth W. Watson who married Betsey Ann Drake, daughter of Curtis Drake and Jemima Payne. Curtis Drake was also a brother to Francis Drake of Lansing and Betsey Drake Corwin. Trying to find out if this is the correct Wiliam Corwin. Francis, Curtis and Betsey were children of Francis Drake of Orange County, New York who died in 1798.

Theophilus and Simon Corwin

Among the "unknown" Corwins listed at

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~riss/ny/so...

is Simon Corwin, born Abt. 1715 in Southold, Long Island, New York. He married Mary Parr39,40 May 27, 1739 in Southold, Long Island, New York41; born Abt. 1715 in Southold, Long Island, New York.

He wold be a son of Theophilus2, Matthia1. ETCorwin's book is not reliable here. He listed only wife Hannah Ramsey and children Timothy, John, Samuel, Theophilus. Samuel Curwen, who visited the family in 1755 and interviewed, among others, ETC's 2 Matthias (1676 - 1755+), wrote a genealogical chart listing Theophilus's sons as John, Theophilus, Samuel, Simon, David, Jonathan, and Timothy. He always listed sons in order of birth. the will of Symon Ramsey of Southold, 29 March 1719 named among others daughter Mary, wife of Daniel Coirwin, and Hannah, wife of Theophilus Corwin. John, Theophilus, Samuel were Corwin names; Simon the first Ramsey name. It appears that Theophilus had married twice, first an unknown wife by whom he had the first three sons, then Simon, the first son bearing a Ramsey name.

Perhaps I should have mentioned in my preceding essay on Daniel Corwin that the identity of his first wife is settled by the will of Symon Ramsey of Southold, dated 29 March 1719, in which he refers makes bequests to son Symon, daughter Rachel (under age) and then leaves two cows to each of "... Mary, wife of Daniel Corwin, and to Hannah, wife of Theophilus Corwin."

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nynassau/wills1.html

Daniel Corwin, son of Theophilus

Readers of E. T. Corwin’s genealogy will rightly have been confused by his treatment of 1 Daniel Corwin, son of Theophilus. ETC’s 1 Daniel and 2 Daniel were largely the same person, and his 3 Daniel was that person’s son. The following recapitulates the result of extensive research conducted some years ago. Unfortunately, although the conclusions have been preserved, the extensive citations to sources were destroyed in a computer crash. No doubt the Salmon Records, of which ETC was unaware, provided much of the information. They were published in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, vols. 47, 48, 49.

The following will merely outline what ETC said concerning wives and children and then state what is believed to be the correct information.

According to ETC 1 Daniel married Mary Ramsay. They had children Daniel? Henry? Simeon? According to him 2 Daniel married (1) ___ and (2) Elizabeth Cleaves. They had children Nathan, Pelatiah, Mary, Michal, Lucas, Jedediah, Silas, John, Daniel, Edward? and another who married an Armstrong.

1 and 2 Daniel Corwin married (1) Mary Ramsay and (2) in January 1722/3 Elizabeth Cleaves who died on 30 March 1774. Daniel Corwin died on 7 September 1747, leaving a will.

The children by (1) Mary Ramsay were (using ETC’s numbering) and an estimated sequence:

4 Mary, b. c. 1704, who married James Terry on 10 December 1724
--Daniel (unknown to ETC), b. c. 1708, who died on 14 December 1716
1 Edward, b. c. 1710, who married Johanna Corwin on 29 January 1729/30 and died on 16 March 1732/3
--Mehitabel (unknown to ETC), b. c. 1712, who married John Armstrong and died 7 May 1739
1 Nathan, b. c. 1716, who married on 11 February 1736 Phebe Howell
1 Peltiah, b. c. 1717, who married on 27 November 1735 Bezela Osman
-- Daughter (unknown to ETC), b. c.1721, d. 1 September 1735
1 Michel, b. ???, who married ____ Sweezy

The children by (2) Elizabeth Cleaves

3 Daniel, b. c. 1725, who married c. 1745 Temperance Bailey
2 Jedediah, b. c. 1728, who married on 23 November 1752 Abiah Sweezy and died 7 May 1799
1 Silas, b. c. 1729, who married Elizabeth Hallock and died on 1 March 1806. She was born in September 1731 and died on 12 February 1831, aged 100.
6 John, b. c 1732, who married (1) on18 November 1756 Jane Elizabeth Wells, who had been born on 18 June 1735. He died on 8 November 1815 and she on 13 April 1799. He married (2) on 13 August 1799 Anna Wells, b. c. 1749, who died on 21 August 1821.

3 Daniel Corwin, son of 1 and 2 Daniel and Elizabeth Cleaves, and Temperance Bailey had:

7 Daniel, b. c. 1750, concerning whom no more is known. ETC assigned him the wrong parentage.
6 Henry, b. 10 January 1752, who married on 11 November 1773 Bethia Reeve, b. 10 September 1744, died 1 September 1832.
--Betsey (not known to ETC), b. c. 1754, who married on 30 November 1774 Nathaniel Petty, b. 20 August 1753
2-1/2 Phebe, b. c. 1755, who married on 1 February 1778 Thomas Jennings
1 Mahala, b. c.1757, who married James Mills
2 Elsie, b. c. 1758, who married on 30 April 1781 Silas Corwin, son of Silas Corwin and Elizabeth Hallock. He had been born c. 1755 and died c. 1836.
-- Mary (not known to ETC as a daughter but mentioned in a note on page 151), b. c. 1762, who married Benjamin L’Hommedieu.
1 Temperance, b. c. 1764, concerning whom no more is known.
2 Lucinda, b. c. 1766, who married John Osborn.
1 Dilly, b. c. 1768, who married Zadok Eldridge.
1 Ruth, b. c. 1770, who married 1 July 1789 Jonas Winters.
5 Nathaniel, b. c. 1775, who married Rejoice Culver.
In my listings of Corwins in the S.W. PA area there is one Charles Corwin b. 1865 son of William Corwin and Mary Ann Armstrong and grandson of Morris Corwin and Mary Jane Smock. I don't know if your Charles is the same as mine as I have no info on who the above Charles married and any children he may have had, however, Pittsburgh is reasonably close to Belle Vernon where Morris and Mary lived. If you find Charles' father was a William Corwin, we probably have a match. Good luck in your search!
